The Jaguar XJ is a series of mid-size/full-size luxury cars produced by British automobile manufacturer Jaguar Cars (becoming Jaguar Land Rover in 2013) from 1968 to 2019. It was produced across five basic platform generations (debuting in 1968, 1986, 1994, 2003, and 2009) with various updated derivatives of each. From 1970, it was Jaguar's flagship four-door model. The original model was the last Jaguar saloon to have been designed under the leadership of Sir William Lyons, the company's founder, and the model has been featured in countless media and high-profile appearances.

Series 1, 2, and 3 (1968–1992)

Overview

The first generation Jaguar XJ was produced for a total period of 24 years, with two major facelifts – in 1973 and in 1979, with a raised front bumper and less tall grilles.

For four years, the 1968 introduced XJ was always a four-door, straight-six saloon on a 2.76 m (108.75 in) wheelbase. In 1972, a more spacious, 4-inch (10 cm) longer wheelbase (LWB) option, and a 5.3 litre V12 engine were added. On the XJ series II (from 1973), the standard wheelbase (SWB) saloons were cancelled in 1974 – but a SWB two-door (series II only) coupé was sold from 1975–1978.

The 1979 series III saloons received a redesigned greenhouse (upper body) and bumpers. The 6-cylinder series III models were replaced by the second generation Jaguar XJ in 1987, but the V12 models not until 1992.

Common 1985 Jaguar Xj6 problems

The 1985 Jaguar XJ6 is a classic car that has been praised for its smooth and quiet performance, as well as its comfort and reliability. However, there are some common problems that owners have reported over the years.

One of the most common problems with the 1985 Jaguar XJ6 is engine oil consumption. The engine may start to use oil after a certain number of miles, which can lead to a decrease in performance and potential engine damage if not addressed. In some cases, a rebuild of the engine may be necessary to correct this issue.

Another common problem is rusting of the gas tanks. This can occur due to the age of the car and the materials used in the tanks. In some cases, the tanks may need to be removed, refinished, and fitted with new sending units to correct this issue.

The door window switches may also fail and need to be taken apart and cleaned to work properly again. This can be a simple fix, but it may require some knowledge of electronics to complete.

The A/C compressor may also need to be replaced with a later type to improve performance and reduce weight. This can be a more complex repair, but it can greatly improve the comfort and reliability of the car.

In addition to these specific issues, the 1985 Jaguar XJ6 is known for its complexity and potential for critical rust. This can make it tricky and relatively expensive to restore, and it can be difficult to convince potential buyers that the car will stay fixed.

Overall, the 1985 Jaguar XJ6 is a classic car that can provide a smooth and quiet driving experience, but it may require some maintenance and repairs to keep it running properly.

What problems did the Jaguar XJ have?

Water pumps on 5.0 V8 and 3.0 Supercharged XJ models are prone to failure, sometimes they can fail in less than 20,000 miles. This is because coolant gets inside the bearing housing corroding the water pump bearing.

How big is a 1985 Jaguar XJ6?

The height, measured from the ground to the top of the car, is 1377 mm across all variants. The width is 1770 mm across all variants. The length is 4959 mm across all variants.

What engine is in Jaguar XJ6?

The XJ6, using the 2.8-litre (2,792 cc (170.4 cu in)) and 4.2-litre (4,235 cc (258.4 cu in)) straight-six cylinder versions of Jaguar's renowned XK engine, replaced most of Jaguar's saloons – which, in the 1960s, had expanded to four separate ranges.

What is the best Jaguar XJ engine?

By far the most popular engine choice is the twin-turbocharged, 3.0-litre V6 diesel – found in various Jaguar Land Rover products – and this 300hp engine is superbly refined and near silent at cruising speeds.
