The Jaguar XJ is a series of mid-size/full-size luxury cars produced by British automobile manufacturer Jaguar Cars (becoming Jaguar Land Rover in 2013) from 1968 to 2019. It was produced across five basic platform generations (debuting in 1968, 1986, 1994, 2003, and 2009) with various updated derivatives of each. From 1970, it was Jaguar's flagship four-door model. The original model was the last Jaguar saloon to have been designed under the leadership of Sir William Lyons, the company's founder, and the model has been featured in countless media and high-profile appearances.

Series 1, 2, and 3 (1968–1992)

Overview

The first generation Jaguar XJ was produced for a total period of 24 years, with two major facelifts – in 1973 and in 1979, with a raised front bumper and less tall grilles.

For four years, the 1968 introduced XJ was always a four-door, straight-six saloon on a 2.76 m (108.75 in) wheelbase. In 1972, a more spacious, 4-inch (10 cm) longer wheelbase (LWB) option, and a 5.3 litre V12 engine were added. On the XJ series II (from 1973), the standard wheelbase (SWB) saloons were cancelled in 1974 – but a SWB two-door (series II only) coupé was sold from 1975–1978.

The 1979 series III saloons received a redesigned greenhouse (upper body) and bumpers. The 6-cylinder series III models were replaced by the second generation Jaguar XJ in 1987, but the V12 models not until 1992.

Common 1983 Jaguar Xj6 problems

The 1983 Jaguar XJ6 is known for several common problems based on complaints from owners of this car. These issues include fuel leaks, engine, transmission, and rear end leaks, rubber suspension components rotted by oil, windshield wipers not parking, driver's seat not adjusting, minor electrical problems, and rust issues.

One of the most common issues is a fuel cross-over valve leak, which can cause a strong gasoline smell while the car is running. This leak can lead to unknown remaining fuel leaks, making the car smell like gasoline even when it's not running.

The car's engine, transmission, and rear end also have leaks, which can be a significant problem for owners. These leaks can lead to low reliability and require frequent maintenance and repairs.

Rubber suspension components can rot due to oil exposure, leading to a decrease in ride comfort and handling. This issue is common in older Jaguar models and can be challenging to fix due to the rarity and expense of replacement parts.

The windshield wipers on the 1983 Jaguar XJ6 may not park correctly, which can be a minor inconvenience but can also lead to damage to the wipers and the windshield if left unaddressed. Some owners have reported ordering a park switch to fix this issue.

The driver's seat in the 1983 Jaguar XJ6 may not adjust, which can be a significant problem for drivers who need to adjust their seat for comfort or safety. In some cases, the seat may be stuck in a high or mid-forward position, making it difficult to drive the car.

Minor electrical problems are also common in the 1983 Jaguar XJ6. Some owners have reported issues with dome lights not working, even after replacing the switch, fuse, and bulbs. This issue may be caused by a break in power somewhere between the fuse box and the switch.

Rust is also a significant problem for the 1983 Jaguar XJ6. Some owners have reported small rust bubbles appearing just below the windshield spars, a typical location for rust issues in this car. The driver's floor pan may also be rusty, which can be a significant safety issue.

In summary, the 1983 Jaguar XJ6 is known for several common problems, including fuel leaks, engine, transmission, and rear end leaks, rubber suspension components rotted by oil, windshield wipers not parking, driver's seat not adjusting, minor electrical problems, and rust issues. These problems can lead to low reliability and require frequent maintenance and repairs, making owning a 1983 Jaguar XJ6 a challenging experience for some owners.
