2015 Toyota Avalon hybrid problems
The Toyota Avalon (Japanese: トヨタ・アバロン, Hepburn: Toyota Abaron) is a full-size sedan produced by Toyota. It is Toyota's largest front-wheel drive sedan and serves as its flagship sedan in the United States, Canada, China and the Middle East. It was also produced in Australia from April 2000 until June 2005, when it was replaced in November 2006 by the Aurion. The first production Avalon rolled off the TMMK assembly line in Georgetown, Kentucky, in September 1994, and subsequent generations have all been manufactured at the Kentucky location to date.
Toyota marketed the Avalon as a replacement for the Cressida, a model discontinued for the American market in 1992. While the Cressida was an upper-level mid-size rear-wheel drive car with a straight-six engine, the Avalon is front-wheel drive, powered by a V6 engine. In recent years, there has been considerable overlapping with its platform mates, the Camry V6 and the Lexus ES, although the third-generation and subsequent Avalon was distinguished by offering extra legroom due to its extended-length chassis. From 2013, the Lexus ES was moved to the extended platform to match the Avalon.
As of 2013, the Avalon was sold in the United States, Canada, China, South Korea and the Middle East. It was discontinued in the United States in 2022.
Avalon is a legendary island featured in the Arthurian legend, fitting it in with Toyota's tradition of naming their sedans the word for "crown" in various languages (Crown, Corona, Camry, Corolla), types of crowns (Tiara), or other things associated with royalty (Scepter).

Common 2015 Toyota Avalon hybrid problems
The Toyota Avalon Hybrid 2015 has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners.
One of the issues is the Rear Window Sunshade Failing and Making a Grinding Noise. This problem has been reported by several owners, and it seems to occur when the sunshade is in use. The sunshade can fail to operate correctly and make a grinding noise, which can be quite annoying and may indicate a more significant issue with the sunshade mechanism.
Another problem reported by some owners is the Automatic Transmission May Not Shift Correctly at High Mileages. This issue can be a significant concern for those who have owned the car for a long time and have put many miles on it. The transmission may not shift smoothly or correctly, which can lead to a less enjoyable driving experience and potentially more severe problems if left unaddressed.
Additionally, some owners have reported issues with the battery.
There have also been some complaints about the Bluetooth Connectivity not Working Properly. This issue can be frustrating for those who rely on their car's Bluetooth system to connect their phone and play music or make hands-free calls.
Finally, some owners have reported a Musty Odor Coming from the Vents. This issue can be a significant concern for those who are sensitive to smells or have allergies.
It is important to note that not all 2015 Toyota Avalon Hybrid owners have experienced these issues, and many have reported having a positive experience with the car. However, these are some of the common problems reported by owners, and potential buyers should be aware of them before making a purchase decision.

TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-29
- VIN: 4T1BK1EB2FU
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: I have tire size P225 / 45 R 18. Michelin Primacy mxm4. The compalint tire exploded at 65 MPH (the speed limit). The falure caused the car to swerve into the next lane which was occupied by another car at the time. My safety was at risk when I momemtarily lost control of the vehicle and others were at risk when I enetred an occupied lane. Problem was inspected and confirmed by Mavis (formerly NTB) in Keller TX. The only warning was that a couple of weeks prior to the incident while rotating my tires the Mavis location found a bubble in the sidewall of another tire (not the one that exploded) that was in the same lot as the one that exploded. It was replaced under the warranty. I now beleive that the entire lot of tires are defective and have asked for a completely new set of tires.
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-17
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 4T1BK1EB6FU
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: The contact owns a 2015 Toyota Avalon. The contact stated while pulling into a parking space, the vehicle accelerated unintendedly, drove over the curb, and crashed into bushes. The air bags did not deploy. The contact did not sustain any injuries. There was no police report filed. The contact was able to drive the vehicle to the residence. The vehicle was then taken to the dealer, where she informed that the VIN was not included in a recall related to the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 109,400.
SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-04-17
- VIN: 4T1BK1EB4FU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: While driving the pre-collision system (PCS) turns on unexpectedly, without any warning lights or sounds, and applies the brakes. This happens when I am driving in traffic with plenty of space between the car in front of me. I typically drive between 3-6 seconds behind the car in front of me to allow for at least 300 feet in space when driving at highway speeds. Despite leaving plenty of room for cars in front of me, on multiple occasions the car has started braking abruptly while going anywhere between 50, 40, 30, or 20 miles per hour. This can be verified for inspection upon request. Despite there being a recall for my specific year, make, and model car (2015 Toyota Avalon) for this exact issue my VIN number is not covered. Toyota is requiring me to pay out of pocket for them to 1) determine if its malfunctioning and 2) replace the system, which is a huge conflict of interest. Even though the Driver's Manual says that I can disable the PCS by clicking on the PCS on/off button within the driver's glovebox, there is no such button, only a blank button cover. Not having the ability to disable the PCS system, or worse, allowing it to continue braking while I'm driving is a serious hazard. The car can start braking while I am accelerating to merge onto expressway on-ramps, or while changing lanes at the same speed of traffic. The car can also unexpectedly brake while cars are traveling too close behind me. I want to know why my VIN was not included in the initial recall and why I now have to pay to have it looked at or repaired when its clearly malfunctioning and can't be turned off as the Driver's Manual says it can. I should not have to pay $175 an hour for several hours for a Toyota dealership to diagnosis it and then another $175 an hour for 2.5 hours for them to install the fix and whatever the new component costs. I recently bought this car at 35,500 miles and the issue immediately started occurring just as the warranty expired at 36,000 miles.
AIR BAGS,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-12-24
- VIN: 4T1BK1EB9FU
- Components: AIR BAGS,SERVICE BRAKES

The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the brake pedal was depressed; however, the vehicle failed to stop immediately and made an abnormal sound. Additionally, the air bag warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 39,000.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-12-14
- VIN: 4T1BK1EB8FU
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Front windshield seems to be failing. Glass along perimeter where Windshields sits / mounts onto the body of the car its failing. The glass seems to be delaminating in various spots along the entire perimeter. Please review photos. I have contacted Toyota Corporate about this and they could not careless. Their response for me was to go pound sand.
STRUCTURE PROBLEM

- VIN: 4T1BD1EB5FU
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: The body of the car, clunks when making a right or left turn while leaving the road and entering a slightly raised or lowered entry. A very clear clunk sound occcurs emanating from the overhead, just behind the driver's seat. It doesn't happen every time, but is increasing in frequency. I don't know if this is or will be a safety risk. This has not been witnessed or confirmed by Toyota and cannot be verified by inspection because it is inaccessible, behind the overhead. It first occurred and was reported around the 50,000mi servicing.
TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-10-25
- VIN: 4T1BK1EB5FU
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: Tire Size 225/45 R 18. The tire had slightly over 3,000 miles on it. 1. Rear driver side tire that is in my possession and available for inspection, but is in 2 parts. 2. My wife and I traveled from Brandon, MS to Birmingham, Al for a medical appointment early the next day. In Tuscaloosa, Al driving in right hand lane approximately 60 MPH the handling became rough, the tire blew out, causing loss of control and throwing the vehicle in center lane, fortunately no other vehicle was there, I regained control and moved to side of road without out any physical injury. 3. After attempting to change the tire, a wrecker had to be called and towed to the only tire store open, Firestone. The technician removed the tire and said the tire separated and was replaced with a new tire. 4. Upon returning home, the tire was taken to my dealer who inspected the tire, said it was too torn up (2 pieces) to tell if it was structural failure and Continental would not do anything. He said if tires fail it is in 1st 1,000 miles and something must have been hit. I advise that nothing was hit, that Continental needed to know about the tire. He offered no further assistance. 5. Tuscaloosa & Birmingham are roughly 50 miles apart, a little prior to reaching Tuscaloosa, the low tire sensor came on, which it will do occasionally, did not notice any change in how the vehicle handled and planned to have it checked out at a Continental dealer in Birmingham the next day.
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-10-01
- VIN: 4T1BK1EB6FU
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: The steering tilt lock mechanism is failing. Vibrates loose while driving. It is a non-wear item. Toyota had to recall 2009-2012 models of Avalon for the same problem. My vehicle is a 2015 and is out of warranty and only has 50,000 miles. I did have a service center check it and they confirmed the problem. You can repair this non-wear item you must replace the complete steering column assembly. With parts and labor the cost is @ $1500. Whatever they did to redesign the mechanism since the 2012 model year to fix the problem was not effective. Toyota responded to my letter and declined to take any responsibility.

I've only had the car for 4 weeks, but I already love how comfortable and economical it is. I've owned an Avalon for 17 years, and it seems like this one will be just as reliable, but with more comfort features and better fuel efficiency.

Hi there! I noticed that you recently purchased a car that was listed as 'used' with only 77 miles on the odometer. According to the Carfax report, the car had been at a Toyota dealer for 13 months before being sold at auction to another Toyota dealer near you. The great news is that the car still has the balance of the factory warranty, with 33 months remaining out of the original 36. Enjoy your new ride!

It's great to have a hybrid full-size sedan! Although the gas mileage isn't quite as good as a hybrid Camry or a Prius, it's still impressive for a car of this size. I've test driven a hybrid Camry and I can confidently say that the Avalon's performance is much better. In terms of appearance, it's essentially the same car as the Lexus ES with a different hood ornament. Overall, I'm very satisfied!

I recently had an issue with my 2016 Ford Edge Sport AWD with 137,000 miles on it, but I was able to find a great solution! After a quick Google search, I came across a Hybrid Avalon that was priced much lower than I expected. I test drove it the same day and brought it home for my spouse's approval. Within a couple of days, I was able to purchase it. The car had low miles at 88k at the time of purchase and I am now enjoying an average of 36 mpg, only needing to fill up about once a month. The adaptive cruise is an added bonus that works great and the car is fully loaded with every option available for that model year, including wireless charging and LED DRL's. Despite being 9 years old, the car looks brand new and the ride is smooth and quiet. The transition between ICE and Hybrid is hardly noticeable. The only thing to be aware of is that it's easy to spin the tires on wet pavement at takeoff if you really punch it. At the time of purchase, the car already had new tires and brakes installed along with new cabin and air filters. Overall, I am extremely happy with my purchase and the fact that I am getting 36mpg with a car the size of a Taurus is truly impressive!

Toyota, we kindly suggest improving the comfort of the front seats. After driving for half an hour or more, the lack of cushioning and/or poor design can cause discomfort to the driver and passenger. We hope you can take this feedback into consideration.

The 2014 Avalon has undergone significant changes from its predecessors, resulting in a smaller back seat and increased road noise. However, the Toyota Prius offers a more spacious back seat for taller individuals. Additionally, the Camry is a smaller alternative to the Avalon. Our team of experts at Toyota is constantly working to improve our designs and we appreciate your feedback.

Overall, the car is okay, but it can be quite noisy and the Nav/Radio function is unresponsive at times. It also takes a while to turn on. While the mileage is good, it's not quite up to the advertised standards. Additionally, the side visibility is poor and the Nav location is not ideal. However, we appreciate the effort put into this car and hope that these issues can be addressed in future models.

There's a lot to like about this car, but unfortunately, I cannot recommend it. During my test drive, I found the ride to be a little stiff but acceptable. However, after driving it for a month, I have noticed that the harshness of the ride has become increasingly annoying. Every rut, crack, and bump on the road is telegraphed through the chassis, making it difficult to enjoy the ride. On rough roads, the ride can be quite jarring. It is my hope that Toyota will address this issue and make improvements to the suspension. Thank you for considering my experience with this car.

I have a 2015 hybrid with 18,500 miles. Although I loved my previous 2000 Avalon, this one has not met my expectations. The mileage only averages 30.8 mpg, which is disappointing as it only varies by 1 mpg with highway or in town travel. However, I appreciate the safety features. The front seats are not as comfortable as my previous car, as I feel like I am sitting 'on' rather than 'in' the seat. Additionally, the interior finishes are not of the same top quality as my old car, with lots of rattles and cheap buttons. The visors are also flimsy. Despite these issues, I am confident in my purchase decision and appreciate the value it has provided me. I purchased it for $31k in 8/17 and it is now valued at $19k with 18,500 miles. While I am disappointed with some aspects of the car, I still trust in the Toyota brand.
