Infiniti Q45 problems

infiniti logo

The Infiniti Q45 is a full-size luxury sedan manufactured by Nissan for its Infiniti brand, spanning model years 1989-2006 and three design generations.

The first generation Q45 (1989–1999) was based on the Nissan President; the second generation (1997–2000) and third generation (2002–2006) were based on Nissan's JDM Nissan Cima. Marketing of the Q45 ended after MY 2006.

First generation (G50; 1989–1996)

The first generation Q45 came to market in 1989 as a 1990 model with a high-output 4.5 L VH45DE DOHC 32V V8 engine rated at 278 hp (207 kW) and 292 lb⋅ft (396 N⋅m) in North American trim. All Q45s included a viscous limited-slip differential and a multi-link suspension at the front and rear. At launch, the US$38,000 (equivalent to $93,000 in 2023) sedan had a single option, the Touring Package, which added Nissan's Super HICAS four-wheel steering system, a decklid spoiler, and alloy wheels.

In Japan, it was marketed as the Nissan Infiniti Q45, and was exclusive to Nissan Prince Store locations, as its platform twin the President was exclusive to Nissan Store locations. The G50 chassis continued in production in Japan until 2002 as the President in both regular and extended wheelbase versions. The Japanese version had many options that never appeared on the North American G50.

The contemporary upstart luxury marque Lexus (Toyota) had managed to challenge the establish dominance of European full-size luxury cars with the LS 400, so the Q45 seemed poised for similar success with comparable specifications and price to the LS 400 while featuring more emphasis upon handling. However, the Q45 did not achieve similar sales volumes, which was attributed to the car's unconventional styling, particularly the grille and lack of interior woodgrain or chrome trim. There was also an unusual advertising campaign which did not include actual photos or information about the car. By 1995, the price had risen to US$54,000 (equivalent to $108,000 in 2023), slowing sales.

In 1993 the Infiniti brand was launched in Australia with the sole model on offer being the Q45. With a price of A$140,000, the Q45 sold poorly and the brand was subsequently withdrawn from the market in 1996.

Common Infiniti Q45 problems

The Infiniti Q45 is a luxury sedan that has been praised for its power, comfort, and rarity. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems that have been reported by owners.

One of the most frequently reported issues with the Infiniti Q45 is transmission problems. These issues can manifest as fluid leaks or a noisy transmission. The transmission is a critical component of the vehicle, and problems with it can lead to issues such as jerking, delayed shifts, hard shifts, slipping, and shuddering. Transmission fluid needs to be replaced every 30,000 to 60,000 miles to prevent these issues from arising. Old transmission fluid can cause terrible sounds, and a worn-out torque converter can be a significant headache.

Another issue that has been reported by owners of the Infiniti Q45 is problems with the transmission shifting. Some owners have reported that their vehicles suddenly stopped shifting into drive gear without any warning. This can be a significant problem that can lead to a transmission failure, which can effectively kill the vehicle.

In addition to transmission problems, some owners of the Infiniti Q45 have reported issues with the shifter becoming stuck or non-responsive. This can be a significant problem that can make it difficult or impossible to shift gears, which can be dangerous in traffic.

Leaking fluids is another issue that has been reported by owners of the Infiniti Q45. This can be a problem with any vehicle, but it can be particularly problematic with the Q45, as leaking fluids can lead to more significant issues with the transmission and other critical components.

Finally, some owners of the Infiniti Q45 have reported a slight "floating feeling" when driving the vehicle. This can be a disconcerting experience, particularly for those who are used to driving vehicles with a more solid feel.

In summary, while the Infiniti Q45 is a powerful and luxurious vehicle, it is not without its share of common problems. Transmission problems, issues with the shifter, leaking fluids, and a floating feeling when driving are all issues that have been reported by owners of the Q45. Regular maintenance, including transmission fluid changes, can help prevent many of these issues from arising.

  • Summary: I HAD A PROBLEM WITH MY CAR, WITH THE TIRES CONSTANTLY LEAKING. I HAD TO FILL THEM WITH AIR ALL THE TIME, HAD THEM CHECKED A NUMBER OF TIMES, AND HAD TO HAVE THE RIMS CLEANED AND REGROUND, ETC., TRYING TO DETERMINE AND SOLVE THE PROBLEM. AFTER INCREDIBLE AGGRAVATION, WE FINALLY TRACKED THE PROBLEM DOWN TO CRACKS IN THE VALVE STEMS. THE VALVE STEMS CONTAINED THE AIR PRESSURE SENSORS AND WERE EXPENSIVE TO REPLACE, PARTS WERE AS MUCH AS $135 OR SO EACH, PLUS LABOR, WHICH COULD BE $200 OR MORE, AND THEN ALL THE TIRE PRESSURE SENSORS HAD TO BE RE-SET - I THINK THE TERM WAS RECALIBRATED OR SOMETHING, WHICH MOST PLACES DIDN'T HAVE EQUIPMENT TO DO OR COULDN'T DO CORRECTLY, AND I ALWAYS ENDED UP HAVING TO GO TO A DEALERSHIP. AT LEAST THEY SOMETIMES DIDN'T CHARGE AS MUCH AS THEY COULD, AS I WAS A CAPTIVE; IF THEY DIDN'T DO IT, NONE OF THE SENSORS WOULD WORK. I DISCOVERED THAT THESE VALVE STEM SENSORS WERE SUBJECT TO CRACKING, AND HAD JUST BEEN PUT ON THE CAR FOR THAT MODEL YEAR. MIDWAY THROUGH THE MODEL YEAR, THEY WERE REPLACED WITH ANOTHER TYPE MADE OUT OF BETTER MATERIAL. BEFORE MY MODEL YEAR, THE TYPE USED WAS IN SERVICE I THINK FOR SEVERAL YEARS. THE MID-YEAR REPLACEMENTS WERE USED FOR THE NEXT SEVERAL MODEL YEARS. THIS ALL SUGGESTS THAT THEY KNEW THERE WAS A PROBLEM, BUT AVOIDED PAYING FOR IT OR ISSUING A RECALL. COULD YOU PLEASE INVESTIGATE? THANK YOU

Latest negative Infiniti Q45 car reviews

  1. Gerardo Swift 2024-11-10

    Vehicle year: 2004

The 2002 Q was introduced with great fanfare, touted as having power and build quality that could rival even Lexus. As a loyal Infiniti customer, having previously owned a J30 and a 97 Q, I was eager to purchase one for myself. However, I must admit that I have been disappointed with my experience. While the car does offer power, there is a noticeable lag after cornering and the steering is loose and unresponsive, providing little feedback to the driver. Additionally, I have had to bring my Q in for service more frequently than my Toyota pickup, which handles better. I have had to replace the seat tracing three times, the tires at 17,000 miles, and all brake rotors were warped at 30,000 miles. Most recently, a front bearing and spindle broke. Despite my frustrations, I remain confident in Infiniti's ability to produce quality vehicles and hope that future models will address these issues.

  2. Geovanny Berge 2024-10-20

    Vehicle year: 1994

The Q has been a great vehicle with impressive performance, boasting 278 horsepower. Despite experiencing some issues such as transmission failure, control arm replacements, door lock malfunctions, and compression problems resulting in head replacements, I remain confident in its overall quality. It is worth noting that some of these issues occurred after the warranty had expired. While my '89 Nissan Maxima may have been more reliable, the Q's performance is unmatched.

At 120,000 KM, unfortunately, the transmission failed and required a $4,600 repair job. Later, at 130,000 KM, the fuel pump also needed to be replaced, costing $950. Unfortunately, at 140,000 KM, several components, including all injectors, the fuel pump again, regulator, O2 sensors, electric antenna, door sensors, and others, failed within four weeks of each other, resulting in a $5,000 repair cost. It's important to note that some Infiniti models, including this flagship car, have experienced major defects. If you're considering purchasing a model from before 1995, it's important to be aware of the potential for significant repair costs. Many Q45 owners have reported similar issues, and the dealer service manager has confirmed that some models have had problems. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

I bought this car as a surprise for my wife. The first two months were great, but then we started experiencing some issues. We had to replace the valve cover gaskets, which took two weeks and cost $900.00. After that, we had to replace the gas cap twice in just 10,000 miles of ownership because the car kept stalling. We also had some minor electrical issues, but the final straw was the fuel injection. At that point, we decided to get rid of the car.

I have had my Infiniti Q45 for 10 years and it has been an amazing vehicle. With 190,000 miles on it, the only issue I ever had (other than standard maintenance) was the alternator at 135,000 miles. I believe it is a very underrated vehicle. Although I bought a new Nissan this year, I gave the Q45 to my 16-year-old daughter. After 4 months, I already miss my Q45! It truly is the best car ever!

This is the best car ever! It's a real head-turner. I love the quality of the make, and even though it's older, it's still very much in style.

When I received the car, there were several recalls and service upgrades that the dealer had not addressed. Unfortunately, the dealer refused to warrant the defective wheel (out of round). Additionally, the rear sunshade broke at 33,000 miles and the electronics malfunction occasionally, requiring a reset. I find it easier to use manual controls rather than voice commands, as I can't always remember the exact wording and it can be disruptive to everyone in the car. According to car magazine tests, the car can go from 0 to 60 in about 6.5 seconds, which is still quite fast, although not as fast as the advertised 5.9 seconds. It would be helpful to have a switch to turn off the traction control. My previous car was a Lexus LS400, which I found to be superior in terms of quality, dealer service, and workmanship. Unfortunately, this car does not seem to be holding its value very well.

You have a 1996 Q45 with about 90,000 miles on it, which means it has averaged a little over 10,000 miles a year. The car is really nice, offering an excellent combination of luxury and power. It has an excellent, though somewhat 'soft' ride, great interior room and comfort, and best of all, real get-up-and-go under the hood. With a V8 engine, you can go 0-60 in a snap without so much as a second thought. Additionally, it has been very reliable; other than gas/oil and brakes, the only maintenance done has been the 60K checkup to change belts etc. This car is definitely the best of all the cars you've owned.

The Infiniti Q45 is such a blast to drive! With plenty of horsepower to get you where you need to go and great brakes to stop you when you get there, it's the perfect luxury sedan for anyone who loves to hit the road.
