2009 Infiniti G37 problems
The Infiniti G Line is a series of compact executive cars manufactured and marketed by Infiniti, a luxury division of Nissan, for the 1991–1996 and 1999–2016 model years — across four generations.
The first two generations of the Infiniti G (P10 and P11) were sedans based on the Nissan Primera. Beginning with its third generation (V35), the Infiniti G have been rebadged versions of the Nissan Skyline line of sedans and coupes that were exported to the United States and Canada. The fourth generation (V36) introduced the hardtop coupe convertible. The Nissan FM platform, used with the third and fourth generations (V35 and V36) of the Infiniti G, also underpins the Nissan 370Z and has shared components with the Infiniti M, Infiniti EX, and Infiniti FX.
Infiniti established a new naming convention beginning with the 2014 model year; all passenger cars are designated by the letter "Q," while sport-utility model names begin with "QX." The Infiniti G was to have been replaced by the Infiniti Q50, but the G37 was revived as the Q40 beginning with the 2015 model year.

Common 2009 Infiniti G37 problems
The 2009 Infiniti G37 has been known to have several common issues based on complaints from owners. These issues span across various categories including transmission, electrical, steering, engine, and interior accessories.
One of the most frequently reported issues is related to the automatic transmission, specifically a harsh downshift from 4th to 3rd gear. This issue can lead to an uncomfortable driving experience, particularly when decelerating or driving on hilly terrain.
Another common problem is a "tapping sound" from the driver's side of the engine, which can be caused by various factors including loose heat shields, worn-out valve lifters, or a damaged timing chain tensioner. This sound can be concerning for drivers, as it may indicate a more serious underlying issue with the engine.
Electrical problems are also prevalent in the 2009 Infiniti G37, with issues such as ignition failure, battery drain, and malfunctioning sensors being reported by owners. These issues can affect various aspects of the car's performance, from starting the engine to operating the climate control system.
Steering problems have been reported by some owners, with issues such as excessive play in the steering wheel or difficulty turning at low speeds. These issues can affect the car's handling and safety, making it important for owners to address them promptly.
Engine problems, while less common, have also been reported by some owners of the 2009 Infiniti G37. These issues can range from minor annoyances such as rough idling or excessive noise, to more serious concerns such as engine misfires or stalling.
Interior accessories problems, such as malfunctioning windows or faulty seat belts, have also been reported by some owners. These issues can affect the car's comfort and convenience, and may require professional repair or replacement of the affected components.
Despite these common issues, the 2009 Infiniti G37 has been praised by many owners for its powerful engine, luxurious interior, and overall reliability.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-21
- VIN: JNKCV66E79M
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: Light blinks for (no airbag on passenger side) working. Light also blinks on dashboard showing no airbags. My car has just over 76,000 miles with meticulous maintenance and no crashes, accidents or even bumps. There are countless complaints, inquiries and threads on the internet regarding the above mentioned problem. I don't know if anyone has taken the time to make an official inquiry but it requires your scrutiny. The fix is a new seat and or an old one that the components still work. There are countless people drivng this vehicle without airbags. We need a fix that won't cost $10,000 (estimate from dealership). Also, where can one find a seat??? Inifinity needs to provide a fix that allows the airbags to function properly without the consumer having to find a new/used seat (and none are available nationwide). The modules are a mere $200 but integrating them into a seat is impossible, so the "fix" is a new seat. This problem exists as the cars age. I project that all inifinities with this style seat have, or are going to have, the same problem as they age. If not, what remedy did Infinity offer in its newer models, leaving the rest of us driving death traps, with no means or opportunity for safely find a "fix". Attached is a copy of the scan from an auto body delearship regarding the lights.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,SEATS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-02
- VIN: JNKCV66E49M
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,SEATS
- Summary: Front passenger air bag occupancy sensor failure. Sensor is located on front passages seat and activates or deactivates passenger air bags based on occupancy and or weight. The vehicle has less than 90,000 miles. Passenger airbag/seat belt warning lamp on. Passenger airbag off indicator light remain on even when passenger seated. Repair cost estimated over $5,000. Vehicle will not pass inspection.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,SEATS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-28
- VIN: JNKCV61E79M
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,SEATS
- Summary: I am the original owner of this 2009 G37 sedan with only 12K miles. This car has never been in an accident. It is perfectly maintained and sits in a garage 99% of the time. Last week the airbag light flashed on. The dealer said the error code was B1018 (Occupant Classification Sensor malfunction). The cost of the passenger seat cushion alone is $7,500. This problem was also found on the 2007 & 2008 G37 models and part of a NHTSA recall (#08V521000). I found this problem all over the internet and this NHTSA site for this model year G37. PLEASE INVESTIGATE THIS PROBLEM. Why isn't this part of the 2007/2008 recall when the sensor is bad in both instances?
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-16
- VIN: JNKCV66E59M
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: The passenger airbag does not work. The light on the dashboard indicated it needed service. When I took it into the dealer, they said it was $7,000 to fix. (More than the car is worth for resale.) After some research, I’ve come across complaints about this on multiple sites & comment boards. This is a serious safety issue. I can no longer have passengers in my car (such as my children). Something has to be done.
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-11
- VIN: JNKCV61F09M

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-10-03

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-03-31
- VIN: JNKCV66EX9M
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: This vehicle has been in our ownership since July 2011, making us the second owner. Currently there is approximately 92,219 miles on the car. The airbag light began blinking without any incident or accident. We took it to the local dealership this week. We were told the occupant sensor failure code B1018 was the issue. Per their words on our invoice "cannot get sensor from Infiniti. Will need seat bottom to correct the issue." The estimated price for this repair is $6,400. I noticed the same problem was reported in the 2007 and 2008 models, and these models were recalled. So now I have no airbag protection which makes this a safety issue. I have spoke with Infiniti corporate office regarding this issue without any assistance in resolving the problem. In my opinion this is a manufacturing defect just as it was in the 2007 and 2008 models, and should be recalled.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-11-01
- VIN: JNKCV61E09M
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: Single owner G37 sedan diagnosed with error code B1018 after reporting a flashing passenger air bag light that suddenly came on. Service provider unbolted seat, disconnected occupant sensor component, cleaned all connections, reconnected and secured so that connector couldn't move. Tried to erase code but unable to do do. Was told I would need a new bottom seat cushion and frame at a cost of approx $3-4k (not including labor). Advised to look at NHSTA for recall information for myself as technician indicated there is no recall for my vehicle. My prior car was a G37 sedan which did have a recall for the exact same issue and it's illogical that this one does not. In reviewing this site, more than 50% of the complaints for this vehicle are tied to the air bags and I stopped reading other complaints when the first five I read all had the exact same issue. Namely, that the light came on suddenly without cause and the only way to correct it, was to replace the seat and sensor. Personally, there is rarely a passenger in my car and the only logical conclusion is that this part is faulty and the original G37 issue was not corrected. Subjecting consumers to the significant repair expense and more importantly, the inherent safety issue a faulty air bag can create, the manufacturer ought to bear the responsibility to correct.
POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-10-01
- VIN: JNKCV61E59M
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: I was driving at about 65 mph on the tail end of a roughly 2 hour trip. The car shut off on me completely. Fortunately there weren't many cars on the road, so I was able to force the steering wheel - since power steering went out as well, I needed to turn the wheel forcefully - to the shoulder. The brakes worked ok, but not well, again because the engine shut off, so I was forcing the brakes and they took a lot longer to work than normally. Had there been normal to heavy traffic, I'd definitely have been in a very bad crash. The vehicle is available for inspection if needed. This is the second time this situation has occurred to me in this vehicle. There was no warning lamp, message, or symptom prior to or after the incident. A dealer, manufacturer, police, insurance, nor anyone else has inspected or reproduced the problem. Various Infiniti online forums reference the same issue.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-11-14
- VIN: jnkcv61e19m
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: My dad gifted his 2009 infinity G37, which he purchased new, to my daughter. it has ~50,000 miles. One week into driving the car the air bag sign started flashing. Diagnosis indicated a B1018 error. Infinity of Escondido confirmed a failed OCS sensor for front passenger seat. Replacement cost: part $4100 bottom cushion with frame + $650 labor. Since the car has been hardly driven since originally purchased by my dad, it is clearly a case of a defective sensor, also considering that infinity G37 2007 & 2008 model years have been recalled for the same issue (recall # 08V521000). The entire airbag system in the car has been disabled due to this faulty sensor - this should fall under federal safety mandate and Infinity is refusing to assist. Called their consumer affairs department with case elevated to regional manager (case # [XXX]) making a request to at least meet me halfway through cost of parts - Their answer is sorry "NO". such complaints are prevalent across the internet with stories similar to mine and Infinity is not taking responsibility. INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
VISIBILITY PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-07-20
- VIN: JNKCV61E19M
- Components: VISIBILITY
- Summary: The contact owns a 2009 Infiniti G37. The contact stated that the sunroof drain was clogged, allowing water to enter the vehicle causing electrical system failure. The dealer was made aware of the failure; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and advised the contact to file a complaint with the NHTSA. The failure mileage was approximately 125,000.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-01-11
- VIN: jnkcv61e79m
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: On my 2009 Infiniti g37, the supplemental airbag warning light keeps flashing. I was told by the dealer that the problem is the sensors in the seat cushion and the cost of fixing it is $7,050.00. I asked if that was a common problem and they said yes. This light just start flashing one day without any apparent cause. My issue is that there should be a recall on this since this affects so many of the Infiniti g series. This is a problem that so many owners face and it is not caused by wear and tear or accident or any disturbance whatsoever. In my case, my right front seat is seldom used. I searched the internet and visited the infiniti forums and well as facebook and other platforms and the number of infiniti owners with this woe are many. I honestly think this happens due to some manufacturers defect and if there is an accident, the appropriate airbags may not deploy so this is a potentially dangerous situation. Infiniti needs to issue a recall for this item.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-03-03
- VIN: JNKCV61F49M
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: A recall was issued for a faulty passenger side airbag sensor on the Infinity G37 model year 2007 -2008 (08V521000). I own a 2009 G37 and it would appear this car is experiencing the same safety issue. The airbag off light for the front passenger seat remains illuminated even with a 200 pound adult seated in it. I also have a constantly flashing airbag warning that is displayed on the dashboard. I am extremely concerned that should my vehicle be involved in a crash, passenger side airbag will not deploy even though there is someone seated in that seat. Infiniti has stated that to repair this issue will cost over $5000 which is nearly the entire value of the car. This recall should be extended to additional model years of the G37.

AIR BAGS,SEATS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-01-12
- VIN: Jnkcv61fx9m
- Components: AIR BAGS,SEATS
- Summary: Car got a flashing airbag light after battery replacement. Reset multiple times just for light to come back. Took to Mears Nissan dealership for diagnosis. Diagnosed with bad occupant detection sensor. Dealership quoted me $4,500 for part without labor. Perfectly good car no longer has operating airbags, my personal safety is now at risk because the cost of repair is greater than the cars value, and the part is on back order for an extended unknown period of time. Vehicle is available for inspection. No other lights at time of incident.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-01-21
- VIN: JNKCV64E09M
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: MY INFINITI SUSTAINED FRONT SUBFRAME DAMAGE FROM ROAD DEBRIS ON SEPT 27, 2020.UPON INSPECTION I SAW THE DAMAGE AND FILED A CLAIM WITH ALLSTATE INSURANCE (CLAIM #060646535) ON NOV 11, 2020. DURING THE CLAIM ALLSTATE REFUSED TO PAY FOR A NEW FRONT SUSPENSION MEMBER (INFINITY PART NUMBER 54401-JK00B) AND DEMANDED A USED PART, TAKEN OFF A SALVAGED "JUNK YARD" CAR BE USED. I INQUIRED ABOUT THE TESTING DONE TO CONFIRM STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY OF THE "RECYCLED" PART AND FOUND ONLY A CURSORY VISUAL INSPECTION WAS DONE. BECAUSE ALLSTATE WOULD NOT PAY FOR A NEW PART I COULD NOT GET THE CAR REPAIRED AT THE DEALER AS THE DEALER ONLY PUTS NEW PARTS ON CARS. SO I TOOK THE CAR TO CALIBER COLLISION, 1203 AVE K, PLANO, TEXAS 75074. CALIBER WAS ABLE TO "WORK THE SYSTEM" TO GET ALLSTATE TO PAY FOR A NEW PART. MY UNDERSTANDING IS BODY SHOPS DELIBERATLY PURCHASE USED PARTS FOR A LOW QUALITY SUPPLIER THEN REJECT THE PART AND THEN ALLSTATE ALLOWS A NEW PART TO BE PURCHASED. JUST A LITTLE "FOOLING" THE INSURANCE COMPANY. SO COMPLIANT #1 IS WHY ALLSTATE IS ALLOWED TO PUT UNTESTED MAJOR STRUCTURAL PARTS FROM JUNK YARD CARS ONTO CARS ON US HIGHWAYS. THIS IS SIMILAR TO THE STATE FARM BONDING VS. SPOT WELDING REPAIR DONE ON CAR ROOFS WHICH CAUSED INJURY AND A MAJOR LAWSUIT. MY COMPAINT #2 IS THAT CALIBER RE-USED THE SINGLE USE "CRUSH NUTS" WHICH SECURE THE SUSPENSION TO THE UNIBODY DESPITE BEING SHOWN THAT INFINITY LISTS THESE AS 1 TIME USE PARTS WHICH MUST BE REPLACED. I FOUND THIS OUT WAS WAS TOLD THAT IF I PURCHASED THE NUTS I WOULD BE REIMBURSED AND IF I INSTALLED THEM MYSELF MY WARRANTY WE REMAIN IN FORCE. NOW I CANNOT GET CALIBER TO REIMBURSE ME THE $17.28 FOR THE NEW CRUSH NUTS. HOW CAN BODY SHOPS BE ALLOWED TO NOT FOLLOW AUTO MANUFACTURES SAFETY DRIVEN REQUIREMENTS AND RE-USE CRUSH NUTS THAT ARE ONE TIME USE ONLY. ANOTHER MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN ON THE SAME REPAIR.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-12-21
- VIN: JNKCV66E79M
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: UPON STARTING THE 2009 G37 WITH JUST OVER 73K MILES ON IT, THE AIRBAG LIGHT BEGAN FLASHING.THE FOLLOWING WEEK, ON DECEMBER 28, 2020, I TOOK THE CAR TO SEWELL INFINITI OF FT. WORTH TO HAVE THE PROBLEM DIAGNOSED. THE FAULT CODE "B1018 OCCUPANT SENSOR UNIT FAIL" WAS FOUND. THE ONLY REMEDY IS TO REPLACE THE PASSENGER SEAT LOWER CUSHION ASSEMBLY FOR $6575.89. THE UPSHOT IS THE CAR IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE WITH A PERSON IN THE PASSENGER SEAT BECAUSE THE AIRBAGS WILL NOT DEPLOY.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,SEATS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-12-13
- VIN: JNKCV64F69M
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,SEATS
- Summary: THE PASSENGER AIRBAG LIGHT IS BLINKING DUE TO A FAULTY SENSOR CONTAINED IN THE PASSENGER SEAT. IF THIS LIGHT DOES NOT TURN OFF, NO AIRBAGS WILL DEPLOY IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENT, WHICH IS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE. INFINITI CHARGES MORE THAN $7000 TO REPLACE THE SENSOR AND THE SEAT TO FIX THIS OUT OF WARRANTY. INFINITI REFUSES TO DO A RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE WHICH HAS BEEN FOUND TO BE VERY COMMON IN NISSAN AND INFINITI VEHICLES.

This is my first Infiniti and I did a lot of research, comparing it to other luxury cars such as the Acura TL, Lexus IS, Lexus ES, BMW 3-series, and Mercedes C class. After test driving them all, I found that the Infiniti G37XS was the best overall choice for me. It provides me with power whenever I need it, has an excellent sporty ride, a luxurious feel inside, and handles very well on ice and snow. Additionally, being Japanese-made, it is built to last.
-
I was looking for a fun car in addition to my FX35. After test driving the Audi TT, BMW 335ix, and the 370Z, I found that the G37x offered the best value and comfort. I can always count on Infiniti for quality. My final decision was based on a combination of factors including performance, comfort/toys, fun to drive, value, and reliability.

I purchased this car from a lot as a stolen recovery with 52k miles and a salvage title, which allowed me to get it for a great price. Despite the initial concerns, the car has proven to be in great condition with no issues, except for a door seal that I had to replace. I absolutely love this car! It has more power than you'll ever need, and it can pass anything at any time while still getting 26-28mpg hwy and 22 around town. The handling is precise and crisp without being twitchy, and it handles curves on rails. The seats are very comfortable for long drives, and the interior is luxurious and quiet. Although there are a couple of minor issues, such as the cruise control not being very accurate going up and down hills and the transmission having a lag between off-throttle and back-on engagement, I have gotten used to them and they are no big deal to me now. The only other small thing missing is a headphone jack interface to play Pandora off my phone, but there are still plenty of music options available, including a USB connection in the console that works with my iPod and a hard drive to copy my CDs onto.Overall, I've owned a lot of cars in my many years, but this one really suits my style. It's aggressive when you want to be, comfortable when you don't, but always ready to rip, and just a joy to drive anytime!

After spending 17 months carefully reading reviews and test driving every car in the entry level luxury class, I finally chose the G37X coupe. I purchased the car this May, but I had the opportunity to test drive it during a Michigan snow storm, and I was impressed with its road grip and handling in both good and very poor road conditions. This car is truly superb in every way. Its exterior lines are eye-catching and its interior refinements are top-notch. I'm also pleasantly surprised by its fuel economy, as I'm averaging 21 MPG with mostly city driving. Not too shabby! Overall, I think this car is awesome.

I searched for a while before ordering my G37xS. As a big fan of three-letter brands (BMW), I was initially hesitant. However, after test driving the 2008 G35, I was completely sold. I read about the upcoming improvements for the 2009 model and ordered one as soon as possible. The AWD Sport version is fantastic, and I especially love the paddle shifters. The car handles very well and accelerates smoothly, making gear shifts barely noticeable. The fit and finish are great, and as a big guy, I find the car quite comfortable. Everyone talks about the value, and I completely agree - this car is better than any other car priced below $65K. The more cars I test drove, the more confident I became in my decision. I have driven 3,000 miles so far and have loved every minute of it. It truly is a fantastic vehicle!

After purchasing my 2009 G37 Convertible, I noticed a persistent creaking sound coming from both sides of the rear portion of the hardtop. That night, I put the top down and up, and noticed that the trunk had opened afterward, so I closed it manually. The next morning, I approached my car in the garage to find the trunk opened again. Two days later, the engine refused to go past 10 mph and the Engine Light was on, so I was forced to bring it into the dealership. It has been over 30 days since then, and Infiniti has tried to solve the problem twice to no avail. Unfortunately, I still don't have my car. I'm curious if anyone else has had similar experiences with Infiniti? Thank you for your help.
