The Infiniti QX70, formerly called the Infiniti FX until 2013, is a compact luxury crossover SUV produced by the Nissan-owned Infiniti luxury vehicle brand between 2002 and 2017. The FX replaced the QX4 as Infiniti's mid-size SUV. It shares the same FM platform as the rear-wheel drive Nissan 370Z, and it "made no claims of climbing mountains." Rather, its aggressive shape promised style and quick handling. The similarly sized Nissan Murano is based on the same D platform as the front-wheel drive Nissan Altima. The FX does not have a Nissan-branded equivalent and is not sold in Japan.

The FX introduced its second generation for the 2009 model year as the FX35 and FX50.

First generation (S50; 2003)

The nameplates FX35 and FX45 refer to the two available engines. The FX35 is available in two drivetrains, the RWD and the AWD, which are both fitted to a dual overhead cam 3.5-liter 24-valve V6 VQ35DE gasoline engine, with aluminum-alloy block and heads, electronically controlled throttle system, and low-friction molybdenum-coated pistons that makes use of the continuous variable valve timing which in part optimizes the opening of intake valves. This is also coupled with an electronically controlled super-wide ratio five-speed automatic with a manumatic shift mode that includes the option of sequentially selected manual gearshifts and downshift rev-matching.

The AWD FX45 incorporates a 4.5 L (4,494 cc) 32-valve V8 DOHC VK45DE gasoline engine with four valves per cylinder, microfinished camshafts with aluminum-alloy block and heads, low-friction molybdenum-coated pistons, titanium intake and exhaust valves, modular cylinder heads, microfinished crankshaft, lightweight pistons, super-silent single stage cam drive chain, and a Continuously Variable Valve Timing Control System that optimizes opening of intake valves. Development began in 1999 under newly appointed CEO Carlos Ghosn's NRP. Design work was completed in rapid succession in 2000, for late 2002 production. Designed prior to that, earlier on in 2000 under the "Bionic Cheetah" theme, the 2001 Infiniti FX45 Concept was introduced at the NAIAS in January 2001. From mid-2001, a new concept based on the production design was developed and completed in late 2001. Sketches were first released in late November 2001. The second-generation 2002 FX45 Concept was introduced in January 2002 at the NAIAS '02 as a thinly-veiled production FX (S50) and planned production was announced for early 2003. In January 2003, the 2003 FX45 made its debut at the 2003 NAIAS and went on sale January 24, 2003.

In 2003 for the 2004 model, changes were the addition of a standard eight-way power front passenger seat that replaced the previous four-way design, the availability of aluminum roof rails and chrome-plated 20-inch wheels. Also new were a dark silver metallic finish for the 20-inch wheels (non-chrome-plated), the addition of a standard HVAC filter for all models and the addition of a new Snow-Mode function.

In September 2004 for the 2005 model year, the FX range received enhancements such as a lane departure warning (LDW) system that helps alert drivers to an unintended movement of the vehicle out of a designated traffic lane. Infiniti's system monitored the lane markings to alert passengers via an audible buzzer that the driver is drifting unintentionally. The LDW system, which utilizes a small camera, speed sensor, an indicator, and an audible warning buzzer, was offered on models. The 2005 Infiniti FX was the first passenger vehicle to offer a lane departure warning system in the United States market. In addition to LDW, the 2005 Infiniti FX range was now equipped with standard roof-mounted curtain supplemental curtain airbags with rollover protection for front and rear outboard seat occupants.

Other changes included the addition of a dark chrome grille, headlight, and clear taillight accents to the FX45 (also available as part of the V6 Sport Package on FX35 models), a new key fob design for the Infiniti Intelligent Key system, and two new exterior colors, Sapphire and Sheer Platinum. Interior changes included a new standard etched aluminum trim.

Total 2007 sales of the FX45 were 1,598 units, about a tenth of the FX35s.

Common 2005 Infiniti Fx35 problems

The Infiniti FX35, a luxury SUV produced by Nissan's premium brand, has been praised for its performance and handling. However, like any vehicle, it can develop certain problems over time. Here are some of the most common issues reported by owners of the 2005 Infiniti FX35:

  • Prematurely Worn-Out Wheel Bearings: Wheel bearings are a critical component of any vehicle, as they support the weight of the vehicle and allow the wheels to rotate smoothly. In the FX35, some owners have reported premature wear of the wheel bearings, which can lead to noise, vibration, and, in some cases, complete failure of the bearing. This can be a safety hazard, as a failed wheel bearing can cause loss of control of the vehicle.
  • Fuel Leaks: Fuel leaks are a common problem in many vehicles, and the FX35 is no exception. Leaks can occur in various parts of the fuel system, including the fuel lines, fuel pump, and fuel injectors. Fuel leaks can be a safety hazard, as they can lead to fires or explosions. If you notice the smell of gasoline or see a puddle of fuel under your FX35, it is essential to have the vehicle inspected and repaired as soon as possible.
  • Erratic or High Idle: Some FX35 owners have reported issues with the engine idling erratically or running at a higher than normal idle speed. This can be caused by various factors, including a dirty throttle body, faulty idle air control valve, or vacuum leaks. If your FX35 is idling roughly or running at a high idle speed, it is essential to have the vehicle inspected and repaired as soon as possible.
  • Door Lock Problems: Door lock problems are a common issue in many vehicles, and the FX35 is no exception. Issues can include locks that fail to engage or disengage, doors that fail to latch properly, and remote key fobs that fail to unlock or lock the doors. These problems can be caused by various factors, including worn-out door locks, faulty wiring, or a dead battery in the key fob.
  • Bearing Failure: Some FX35 owners have reported issues with bearing failure, which can lead to noise, vibration, and, in some cases, complete failure of the bearing. This can be a safety hazard, as a failed bearing can cause loss of control of the vehicle.
  • Fuel Gauge Issues: Some FX35 owners have reported issues with the fuel gauge, which can display inaccurate readings or fail to work altogether. This can be caused by various factors, including faulty wiring, a damaged fuel sender unit, or a dead battery in the fuel gauge.
  • Tire Pressure Sensor Issues: Some FX35 owners have reported issues with the tire pressure sensors, which can fail to work properly or display inaccurate readings. This can be caused by various factors, including low battery power, damaged sensors, or interference from other electronic devices.
  • Rear View Camera Issues: Some FX35 owners have reported issues with the rear view camera, which can fail to work properly or display inaccurate images. This can be caused by various factors, including dirty camera lenses, damaged wiring, or faulty cameras.
  • Interior Reliability Issues: Some FX35 owners have reported issues with the interior of the vehicle, including fuel gauges that fail to work properly, tail gates that creak or tap, and electric door lock drives that freeze over time. These issues can be caused by various factors, including mechanical wear, poor contact in the wiring, or exposure to heat.

It is important to note that while these issues are common, not all FX35 vehicles will experience them. With proper maintenance and care, many of these issues can be prevented or addressed before they become serious problems. If you own an FX35 and are experiencing any of these issues, it is essential to have the vehicle inspected and repaired as soon as possible to ensure your safety and the longevity of the vehicle.

Negative 2005 Infiniti Fx35 car reviews

  1. Jeremy Weissnat 2025-06-16

The car has a great look, good power, and comfortable seating. However, once you start driving on and off ramps of the expressway, the car bounces a lot, which can cause motion sickness on long expressway ramps. Unfortunately, the dealer says that this is a characteristic of the car, which is not what I wanted to hear after buying it. If I had known that it was going to ride like a short wheelbase jeep, I would have never bought it. I own two Lexus RX 300 cars with big wheels, and they do not bounce at all. It is a shame that Infiniti is selling a luxury car with an economy car ride!

  2. Abraham Brekke 2025-05-10

The FX35 has been a disappointment for me. Despite paying a hefty sum of 43k for my 2005 model, I have faced recurring issues with the bubbling dashboard. The Infiniti dealer replaced it once in July 2008, when my car had only 28,000 miles. Unfortunately, the same problem has resurfaced 14 months later, at 40k miles. Despite being out of warranty by 2 months, the Infiniti dealer has offered to replace the dashboard for $1500, with no guarantee that the issue will not recur. This is a major issue that can significantly lower the value of my car. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend the FX35 to anyone.

  3. Jaren Erdman 2025-04-21

Hi there! I noticed that the paint is peeling and the dashboard has melted. It seems like the car requires a lot of maintenance. Let's see how we can help you out!

  4. Tyrel Beatty 2025-03-18

I rented this vehicle and unfortunately, I was not impressed with it. Although it may look roomy on the outside, the interior of the car lacks comfort and style. The front cabin is not as accessible as it could be, which made it difficult for me to locate buttons to adjust the driver's seat to a comfortable height and length for driving. Additionally, the positioning of the headrests in the back blocked the view out of the rear window, and I had trouble adjusting the side mirrors to get a good view of the blind spots on either side. However, the body of the car is quite nice, even if the drive lacks function.

  5. Sherman Schaefer 2024-11-08

The car handles very well and gets a lot of looks. Although the ride is a bit rough, I have not had any other problems with it in my 17000 miles of driving. However, I did experience a serious issue with the driver's power seat controls, which are poorly positioned on the right horizontal surface of the seat and press on the right thigh. This was not something I noticed during the 3 test drives I took, one of which lasted 45 minutes. I have been informed by friends in the service department at the dealership that this is a known issue, but unfortunately, nothing can be done to correct it. It's a shame they won't take responsibility and fix the problem.

Positive 2005 Infiniti Fx35 car reviews

  1. Erling DuBuque 2025-07-29

I have always admired those who drove the Infinity FX35 since 2003, and in August of 2005, I finally had the chance to sit in one. I was immediately impressed by the pearl white metallic exterior and wheat colored interior. As someone with a back problem, finding the right combination of seat adjustments is crucial for me. Luckily, the FX35 had everything I needed - a perfect seat height, power recline, power adjustable lumbar support, and a firm seat. The power tilt/telescopic steering was also a great feature that accommodated my need to recline the seat back. I spent an hour and a half just sitting in the car, testing out the different adjustments. When the salesman came out to check on me, I assured him that everything was perfect. He even offered me a test drive, which I couldn't resist. After driving the car for half an hour, I was sold. The FX35 was not only stylish, but it also had a powerful motor, great handling, and a smooth ride. I felt proud as I left the dealership with the keys to my dream car. Over the past 12 and a half years, I have taken good care of my FX35, replacing the battery and tires, changing the oil and filter as required, and having it detailed every spring. The only issue I had was with the headlights, which were replaced for free due to a factory recall. Overall, I am extremely happy with my purchase and would highly recommend the Infinity FX35 to anyone looking for a reliable and stylish car.To this day, whenever I approach my FX35, I can't help but smile. It's a feeling that only other FX35 owners can understand - a sense of pride and performance that comes with owning such a rare and beautiful car. Even when I'm stopped at a light or in a parking lot, I find myself exchanging knowing smiles with other FX35 owners. It's a special bond that we share. Unfortunately, Infinity announced that 2018 would be the last year they would manufacture the FX35, and while they plan to offer an electric model by 2022, it's just not the same. As a 75-year-old who only drives 3,500 miles per year, I plan to drive my FX35 'Until I Die'. Sure, the gas mileage isn't great, but it's a small price to pay for such a wonderful driving experience. And while I don't have navigation or Bluetooth, I have my trusty smartphone to keep me connected. I just can't imagine driving anything else.

  2. Michel Jenkins 2025-07-15

If you've ever driven a sport design SUV like the FX35, FX45 or the BMW X6, you'll know that they're in a league of their own compared to other SUVs. Living in the Washington DC Metropolitan Area, I need a car that can handle heavy traffic with ease, and the FX is perfect for that. It's agile and handles more like a sport car than an SUV - it's like driving a sedan on steroids! I have the 2005 FX35S sport package with the larger rims, and it's already equipped with everything I need for an aggressive driving experience - 300HP and a sport exhaust system. The interior is also super cool, especially with the light cream interior and excellent attention to detail. - M. Pop

  3. Jimmy Hartmann 2025-07-05

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Fun Car. I've had it for a while now, between 45,000 and 94,000 miles, and I'm happy to say that I haven't had any major repairs. I highly recommend getting the sports version, which comes with a silver rack on top and larger tires. In my opinion, it rides better than the other versions of this vehicle. However, I will say that it does use quite a bit of gas around the city, averaging only about 16 MPG when driving mellow. On the plus side, I'm pretty tall with long legs and I find the car to be quite comfortable. Overall, I'm really happy with my Fun Car and would definitely recommend it to others!

  4. Candido Block 2025-07-02

This car has some great features! The power and handling are good, and the throaty sound on start-up is rather cute. While the storage is not large, it is adequate. Additionally, the car is very good looking. One of the best features is the keyless operation, which means no more fumbling for keys to open doors or start the ignition. Another great feature is the auto seat and outside mirror adjustment per each driver when the door is unlocked. We test drove a Lexus, but its power was marginal. While the ride of the FX is reputed to be stiff, it seems okay to us. We also did not experience any problems with the reputed blind spots. The nav system works well and even tells you in advance if there is a left turn immediately following a right turn.

  5. Mitchel Hill 2025-06-25

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my FX-35 that I purchased from an Infiniti dealership almost five years ago with 29K miles. Since then, I've put on 67K miles and have had a few issues with the car. The dealership was very helpful in fixing two dashboards due to defects in the material, two tears in the upholstery, and a small plastic gear in the front seat controls that broke, which ended up being a $900 bill. Recently, I took the car in for routine maintenance and an unusual noise in the drivetrain. When I picked it up, I noticed it wouldn't shift into reverse without pressing down on the gas pedal. On top of that, I've had some trouble with the Bridgestone Potenza tires. Overall, I still love my car and appreciate the help I've received from the dealership. Thanks for listening!
