2021 Hyundai Sonata problems
The Hyundai Sonata (Korean: 현대 쏘나타) is a mid-size car that has been manufactured by Hyundai since 1985. The first generation Sonata, which was introduced in 1985, was a facelifted version of the Hyundai Stellar with an engine upgrade, and was withdrawn from the market in two years due to poor customer reaction. While the nameplate was originally only sold in South Korea, the second generation of 1988 was widely exported.
The Sonata is currently manufactured in South Korea where their headquarters are located, China and Pakistan. It was named after the musical term, sonata.
First generation (Y1; 1985)
The first Sonata was introduced to compete with the Daewoo Royale series and was a more luxurious version of the Stellar. It included cruise control, power seats, head lamp washers, power brakes, electric operated adjustable side mirrors and chrome bumper trims. The Sonata was available with two trim options in Korea: Luxury and Super (the latter only available with a 2.0-liter engine). In the domestic market Hyundai attempted to sell the Sonata as an executive car using catchphrases like "Luxury car for VIP"; however, as the Sonata was based on the Stellar without any major changes, it was seen by the public as no more than a luxury version of the Stellar. In 1987 Hyundai added two tone color schemes and a trip computer option, but sales soon went down and the car was discontinued in December of that year. The Sonata was sold only in the South Korean domestic market. The vehicle was unveiled in South Korea on 4 November 1985.
Engine choices included 1.6-liter Mitsubishi Saturn (only available outside the domestic market), 1.8- and 2.0-liter Mitsubishi Sirius inline-fours. The latter unit also found its way into the 1987 and later Stellar, and in MPI form the 1986 Hyundai Grandeur. The body was a largely unchanged Hyundai Stellar.
It was sold in New Zealand (right hand drive) with the 1.6-liter Mitsubishi engine with the five-speed manual gearbox; an automatic transmission was an optional extra. The original importer was a unit of the Auckland-based Giltrap Motor Group.
The final version of the Stellar was known as the Stellar 88 and was launched to celebrate the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Afterwards, Hyundai discontinued the Stellar and replaced it with the all-new Sonata.

Common 2021 Hyundai Sonata problems
Common Problems with the Hyundai Sonata 2021
Based on complaints from owners of this car, the following are some of the common problems with the Hyundai Sonata 2021:
- Transmission Oil Pump Malfunction: Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2021-2022 Santa Fe, Sonata, Veloster N, 2022 Santa Cruz, Elantra N, and Kona N vehicles. The vehicle's "fail-safe" limited-mobility drive mode may be impaired, when prompted by a transmission oil pump malfunction, which can result in a complete loss of drive power. Loss of drive power increases the risk of a crash.
- Windshield Bonding: Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2020-2021 Santa Fe, 2021 Sonata, and Elantra vehicles. During manufacturing, the windshield may not have been properly bonded to the vehicle, allowing it to detach in a crash. A windshield that detaches from a vehicle during a crash can increase the risk of injury.
- In-Car Electronics: The infotainment system, including audio, GPS, phone, rear entertainment system, backup or other camera/sensors, and head-up display, has been reported to work erratically with problems occurring 2-3 times per month.
These problems have been reported by owners of the Hyundai Sonata 2021, and Hyundai has taken steps to recall certain vehicles and provide free repairs. However, it is essential to be aware of these issues when purchasing or owning a Hyundai Sonata 2021.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-16
- VIN: KMHL54JJ9MA
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The BMS module within my cars hybrid system failed causing a parasitic drain on the hybrid battery. The dealership where the work was performed would have to be contacted for pictures. The hybrid battery system swole to a dangerously inflated level and did not produce any codes for an OBD reader to pickup. This has caused the dealership to turn my car away multiple times before finally performing the in depth inspecting required to verify battery swelling. This is a known problem throughout the internet I searched "2021 hyundai sonata hybrid battery dying every day" reddit has plenty of user with the same issues. I am not aware of who has inspected my battery besides the dealership. There was no warnings at all the only reason my battery was finally looked at is because of my persistence.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-06
- VIN: 5NPEL4JA2MH
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: 2021 Hyundai Sonata 59,850 miles RPM jumps to around 1,300 at zero miles on occasion. If I am stopped, at a red light or behind other stopped autos, the vehicle jumps forward when I take my foot off the brake. Because this happens quite often, I am aware of this and keep my foot on the brake until other vehicles are out of the way to avoid bumping into them. When this happens, I can cruise at 30 miles per hour without having my foot on the accelerator, I can slow down or stop by applying the brakes but the engine RPM stays at 1,300. If I stop and shut off the vehicle and restart, the operation goes back to normal but occurs again later. The Hyundai dealer has had the vehicle back 9 times but the issue continues. The first few times, they could not find an issue, I returned to the shop when this was happening and the service manager and a technician observed this condition, the EGR valve was replaced. Was OK for a bit but condition returned, the computer was then replaced. Condition continued. Brought the vehicle back and a scan was done and system “re-learned. After a short time the condition returned. Went back to the service center and they did another scan and another re-learn. Condition returned 4-5 days later. Problem still not resolved. Have 59,850 miles on the vehicle, warranty expires at 60,00 miles. This started around July 1, Now October 5. Waiting for a loaner so the service center can drive it around until the situation occurs and they can bring it in immediately for diagnosis. This is the same issue as reported for the same year vehicle in July 2022.

During a routine maintenance appointment at the dealership (Vancouver Hyundai 6802 NE 40th Street, Vancouver WA 98661) they identified a catastrophic engine failure due to internal component deterioration and the engine needs to be replaced. They have had my vehicle in their possession since [XXX] of this year for a total of 134 days. I have a case number at Hyundai # [XXX]. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-07
- VIN: 5NPEH4J2XMH
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Blower motor on 2021 Hyundai Sonata SEL stopped working. Same issue happened on my 2020 Hyundai SEL and currently waiting on my 2020 Sonata to be fixed. Hyundai technician said the wiring harness had a crack and it’s why my 2020 Sonata’s Blower motor stopped working. It’s now three months since they diagnosed and ordered the wiring harness but supposedly it’s still on back order and I’m left with a hot car this entire summer and possibly a cold car come this winter. Now it looks like I will have the same issue with my 2021 Hyundai Sonta.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-10
- VIN: 5NPEH4J20MH
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Fuse box has a defect causing the AC blower motor to intermittently not work. Appears to be the result of loose connections between the fuse box and the fuse itself. The receptacle for the fuse is clearly burnt/melting, and appears to pose as a fire hazard as a result. The car is currently in the shop for repair on this part, but won't likely be fixed for a month+. I do have photos of the damaged parts, should it be requested. The car was taken into a Hyundai dealership for repair work in November 2023, and I was told the fuse had blown but that they fixed it. I was never told about the box appearing damaged/melting at that time, or this being a common problem. It worked again till July 2024. Car was just dropped off 9/3, due to backlog of cars at dealership. The only symptom of issue was the AC blower motor would stop working at random. It would turn back on/off while driving. This seems to be due to the loose connections between fuse box and fuse.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-27
- VIN: KMHL54JJ9MA
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: On three separate occasions over the last two months, while driving, an alert comes on that says check hybrid system then the vehicle powers off. When this happens, you lose the ability to accelerate break steer, and I have been lucky each of those three times and that I was in a situation where there was not much traffic. I am not able to drive the vehicle at this time. I have reported the problem to Hyundai and they want me to drive the vehicle to the dealership for another check of it. They have looked at it once before and have not been able to diagnose a problem. It is unsafe to drive and they are not willing to assist in getting the vehicle to the dealership without me getting it over there.
ENGINE PROBLEM

I have no idea if there has been previous recalls that have not been repaired or not.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-15
- VIN: KMHL54JJ7MA
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: The vehicle, after parking, is nonresponsive to the key fob, nor will it start. This can happen at anytime and anywhere. Dealer said "It is possible the integrated 12v battery into the hybrid battery may be faulty. No codes or tests can confirm the issue. The dealer said the key fobs tested ok." My wife works late at night in a dark area, this has happened 2 times at her place of work and we are concerned for her safety as she has to wait outside for a tow truck to tow it to the dealer. The first 3 times it occured, this issue started around march of 2024, and repeated every 30-45 days. Now it has happened 2 more times in the last week. No warning lamps or indications of problems. The windshield has distortion within the glass and is not a clear view. It is as though you are looking through the heat of a jet engine trying to focus on what is on the other side. This is a major distraction while driving, reading the heads up display in the car, reading street signs and general navigation of pedestrian and other vehicle traffic. There is no aftermarket film or materials on the windshield. The door handle on the drivers side has a cover plate over the hole where a manual key could be inserted. As a construction worker I have very strong hands and I have a difficult time removing the cover plate. The last time I removed the plate I cut my hand on the interior part of the handle as the cover plate popped off. That is how hard the plate is to remove. My wife cannot remove the cover plate on her own. This system is in place for the manual use of the hidden key inside the key fob to be able to open the door in the event of a power failure of the vehicle. which has now happened randomly 5 times.
POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-19
- VIN: 5NPEH4J29MH
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I have been to the dealership on three separate occasions due to the engine misfiring. Two ignition coils have been replaced so far and I recently returned to the dealership for the same issue. This time however, not only did the engine light come on but I went from a full tank to less than a quarter of a tank and the engine is making backfiring sounds. At that time the dealership said that they could not recreate the issue, I got my oil changed and went home. That was a week ago, I am back at the dealership today for the same thing; fuel dumping and backfiring sounds. While at the dealership today it turns out those backfiring noises were the fuel tank expanding so much so that it kept popping the seat up. They deemed the car unsafe to drive and it is currently at the dealership.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-04
- VIN: KMHL54JJ2MA
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: My battery has died twice, so dead that I can’t even unlock to car with the remote. The first time I had it jumped and took it to the dealership where they were unable to find anything wrong with it and they told me if it happened again to have it towed in so they could diagnose it while the battery was dead. So that happened again and I had it towed in to the dealership in early April. It’s now July and they still have my car and don’t have a diagnosis yet. They have had their field engineers out to run all sorts of tests, but nothing yet. Today they told me they have 3 Sonata hybrids there with the same issue as mine.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-28
- VIN: KMHL34JJ7MA
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Randomly the car will get a message when driving starting “ Check Hybrid system. Turn engine Off” and the car isn’t able to accelerate when this happens. When you cut the engine off the car is unable to start again until it is jumped. I’ve confirmed the battery isn’t the issue however something with the vehicle is wrong. There are many accounts of people online dealing with the same issue.
TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-20
- VIN: KMHL54JJ7MA
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: 215/55R17 94V BSW. . Contacted Michelin about two (2) of the four (4) tires DO Not have the date of manufacture on side wall. These tires are direction specific. They should known that. Maybe the date of manufacture is on the inside wall but they should known the the tire is DIRECTIONAL and be on Both sides. I am not going to jack up my vehicle and remove the tire to check the code (IF it is only on one sidewall). Will Return tires to Costco where purchased. Michelin has not responded to my emails...

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-03
- VIN: KMHL54JJ7MA
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: My car will power off randomly, or will seem as though there is no power. I have to revert back to the manual key to enter the vehicle and hit the 12vlt reset to power it back on. This happened at least 3 times. Once while operating the vehicle, and twice while the vehicle was left parked. This is not a low battery issue as, the car will only do this occasionally, and not every time I enter and turn on the vehicle. There is no error code to follow this mishap as all power goes out and the dealer maintenance has nothing to work with.

It's a great car with lots of features!
-
It's great to hear that you're enjoying your Sonata! It's wonderful that this is your third one.
-
This car (Sonata N Line) delivers the power and precision that you're looking for in a sports sedan. The sound of the engine and the crispness of the steering is extremely compelling and fun. It's definitely worth the money and the attention it should get.
-
This is one outstanding car! I previously owned a 2019 Sonata ltd sedan and there is honestly no comparison. The 2021 model is exceptional. The controls are organized and within fingertip reach, while the seats are incredibly comfortable with adjustable settings to suit any trip, long or short. The gas mileage is superior and unrivaled by other cars in and above its pricing. I am very pleased with my purchase. I also need to mention how quiet and smooth the ride is. I was overly disappointed with my 2019 model as it was difficult to have a conversation, but this is not the case with my 2021 model. Dollar for dollar, my satisfaction is off the scale. Trust me, you won't be disappointed!
-
You've made a great choice! This car is an excellent value for your money. It comes equipped with all the latest safety technologies available.

Issues with Sonata hybrid limited? : r/Hyundai
Feb 3, 2024 ... I'm thinking of buying a 2021-2023 hybrid limited. Any issues ? I think it's a non turbo motor and I think that's a good thing.
Kendall D'Amore 2024-11-23
After owning a 2012 Sonata Hybrid, my wife decided she missed hers, so we bought a 2021 model. While we love most things about the car, we have had a few issues. Firstly, we noticed a noise coming from the front right side, like a brake dragging, etc. The dealership said it was just dust on the brakes and needed them cleaned, which seemed odd to me as I've never heard of a car needing brake dust cleaned off the rotors, especially at only 20k miles. Unfortunately, it wasn't covered by warranty. Secondly, the radio navigation system locked up just one hour into a six-hour drive. After some research, we found that the only way to fix it was to shut it off for several hours. Thirdly, after having the brakes looked at, my wife went on a five-hour trip and upon returning home, we found that the under cover had come loose, causing the wheel well cover to also come loose. This was surprising as she didn't hit anything. The dealership quoted us $600 to fix it. Lastly, the navigation system would sometimes say 'Unavailable, try again.' We're hoping that an update will fix this issue.

I purchased a 21 Sonata on January 1st, 2021. Unfortunately, the vehicle required a new motor within six months of purchase due to a persistent check engine light. I took it to the shop two weeks ago and was disappointed to learn of the issue. I am not willing to pay for a car that requires a new motor so soon after purchase.

It's a typical Hyundai, well-built with incredible fuel mileage. However, the technology could use some improvement. I'm not sure who decided that 'Car play' was a good idea, and the 'Smart Cruise Control' system could be better. It tends to slam on the brakes when it detects bends on bridges on country roads, and it can be distracting when it beeps and flashes messages all over the dashboard. Although the safety features are designed for poor drivers, they may not be suitable for experienced drivers who enjoy driving. It would be great if there was an option to turn off these features. Overall, I have owned several Hyundais and loved them until now.
Abraham Hills 2024-09-20
I have owned a 2021 Sonata N-line for about 10 months. While the car has some good design features, I have had some concerns with the build and material quality. Unfortunately, I have experienced some safety and reliability issues that have made me nervous while driving. For example, the driver seat was faulty within a few months and had to be replaced. Additionally, the lumbar support would activate by itself while driving, which was quite scary. I also experienced a feeling of losing power while accelerating a couple of times. There have also been some fit issues with the interior and exterior, such as a squeaking noise on the trunk mechanism in cold weather and a high-pitched whistling noise from the passenger side when driving over 120 km/h. While I have had some issues with the car, I believe that these are not representative of all Sonatas and I hope that Hyundai can address these concerns in the future.

I rented this model and drove it for about 1700 miles across various places in California. While it compares well against western cars, it doesn't quite set the standard, even among luxury vehicles. My personal car is a 2019 Kia, which has similar mileage and comfort, but boasts much better technology. The Sonata's safety features can be a bit overbearing, like a nagging girlfriend or mom, constantly urging you to move when the car ahead starts moving at a stoplight. While this may not be the safest or most convenient option, it does offer some peace of mind. Additionally, the car frequently suggests taking a break after driving for a hundred miles, which may not be ideal for everyone. However, some people may find this feature helpful. In contrast, my Kia has very useful side lights in the mirrors that warn about incoming vehicles in blind spots, without being overbearing. Unfortunately, the Sonata was unable to connect to my iPod, and I had to resort to using a radio interfering device, which didn't work in most places. This was quite frustrating. My previous Honda cars and my Kia have always connected well to devices. Overall, while the Sonata may not have been the perfect fit for me, it could be a great option for someone who values safety features and reminders.
