2016 Volkswagen Cc problems

volkswagen logo

The Volkswagen CC, initially sold as the Volkswagen Passat CC, is a car built by German marque Volkswagen from 2008 to 2016. It is a variant of the Volkswagen Passat that trades headroom and cargo space for a coupé-like profile and sweeping roofline. The CC debuted in January 2008, at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit and was discontinued after the 2017 model year.

Volkswagen said the name CC stands for Comfort Coupe, recognizing its combination of a coupe-like profile with four rather than two doors. While based on the Passat, and sharing its wheelbase, the CC is 27 mm (1.06 inches) longer, 50 mm (1.97 inches) lower, and 36 mm (1.42 inches) wider than the Passat.

While the CC has been replaced by the Arteon in most markets, the latter vehicle retains the CC nameplate in China.

Common 2016 Volkswagen Cc problems

The Volkswagen CC (Comfort Coupe), produced from 2008 to 2016, is known for its sleek design and slanted coupe-like roof. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems.

  • Intake Manifold Failures: The 2.0T turbo petrol engines, offered in both Europe and the USA, are prone to intake manifold failures. This is a major fault, as most cars should not need a replacement intake manifold during their lifetime. The intake manifolds on these engines mainly fail due to faulty flap position sensors. The problems are recognized with professional diagnostics (P2015 fault code) and by random engine misfires and rough idling.
  • High-Pressure Fuel Pump Failure: Direct injection engines need a stream of high-pressurized fuel to operate properly. Once the high-pressure fuel pump starts failing, you might see the engine stutter, overheat, or even go into limp mode.
  • Leaky Water Pump: The 2.0TDI diesel engines in the Volkswagen CC suffer from a leaky water pump. The housing of the water pump is entirely made out of plastic, which under pressure and heat cracks and leaks. There was also a class action lawsuit against the VAG group for this exact problem.
  • Transmission Issues: When buying a Volkswagen CC with the dual-clutch DSG transmission, make sure it works as it should. Many of these cars are sold when bigger transmission issues arise. Many owners experience early transmission clutch wear (there are two “wet” clutches). Some gearboxes also fail completely if the damage and maintenance are neglected.
  • Timing Chain Tensioner and Timing Chain Failure: The CC and its 1.4TSI, 1.8TSI, and 2.0TSI engines were all prone to the failing timing chain tensioners and timing chains. These problems can lead to engine damage if not addressed promptly.

These issues can affect the reliability and cost of maintaining a Volkswagen CC. It is recommended to thoroughly inspect any used Volkswagen CC and ensure that all major issues have been taken care of before purchasing.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-02-22
  • VIN: WVWBN7AN2GE
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: I purchased my Volkswagen CC in 2019. It hasn't been officially 4 years of owning the vehicle, and the clock spring or air bag light comes on in which it seems every 1.5 years. It costs over $800 to repair, and the first repair was replaced by certified VW OEM parts. I can't get an inspection and pass because the horn will not work. My safety is put at risk as I can't warn other drivers who aren't paying attention that I am close by. I actually ended up getting a ticket for switching lanes so fast due to getting out of the way of a vehicle on the interstate who almost ran into me. There is no warning when this happens, it just decides to stop at any given time. This page will not allow me to upload the other scanned diagnosis that was repaired from 2020. Please advise.

POWER TRAIN,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-06
  • VIN: WVWBN7ANXGE
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: When I put my car in drive (to move forward) from a cold start, the vehicle hesitates, does not respond to the accelerator pedal, and does not move. During this time, the transmission does not engage, and the vehicle shakes and produces a loud clunking sound from underneath. After that faulty start, the vehicle operates normally, until the next cold start (vehicle is at rest for 30 or more minutes). Here is an example that shows the danger of this situation. When I back out onto my street, and I put the car in drive, a driver behind me expects me to move. That driver is not expecting a stationary car (stalled, in park, or anything else like the situation I am describing). That creates a safety issue because the driver behind me may not slow down. That driver could then collide with my stationary vehiclle. That could result in injuries or loss of life, to me, or to the driver or passengers in the car that hit me. I spoke to a VW dealer about this, Cherry Hill Volkswagen. They looked up information, and then replied to me "that's normal for that vehicle". The problem is this. That's not normal for any vehicle. That's a bad answer. I have been driving for 50 years, and I have never had any vehicle that performed this way, and I don't know anyone who has. That means it's not normal. If the dealer said "many drivers who own the same vehicle as you do have reported the same problem", that makes it a frequently occurring problem. It does NOT make it normal. Because the dealer did not acknowledge a problem, there has been no effort to correct it. - If every driver who purchased a 2016 VW CC encountered this problem, then every one of those vehicles should have been recalled so that Volkswagen could repair the problem. - If some of the vehicles that were purchased had the problem and others did not, that proves that it is a correctable problem. If NHTSA is aware of this problem and has not directed Volkswagen to correct it, then you are not doing your job.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-11-02
  • VIN: Wvwbp7an2ge
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS
  • Summary: My 2016 VW CC (VIN: [XXX]) has a clock spring failure. I brought my car in to Riverhead Bay Motors on 2/12/2019, with the hope of diagnosing and fixing the part. They had to order the part, so only diagnosis was done. Diagnosis confirmed that the clock spring (in VW’s own words from the bill): “Upon further diag found clock spring defective”). I was told in conversations prior to bringing the car in, with corporate, if they identified a torn clock spring as the cause, a case manager would look into and consider if my car perhaps had a faulty part and the fix could be covered by Volkswagen. After many days spent waiting for the opportunity to speak to a supervisor, I finally was able to on 2/15/2019. Volkswagen is refusing to acknowledge that my clock spring issue is the same as what prompted: both a recall, and an extended warranty, and is peer to of an active investigation—escalated to an engineering analysis--by the NHTSA (EA18-003). They are insisting I pay out of my own pocket to replace their defective product. Since the supervisor was unwilling to give any info on who made the part and whether the relation was causal, I spent some time this weekend using the NHTSA as a transparent resource. What I have found is that the faulty part in my car is the same one that was involved in a previous recall, and the same one involved in a voluntary extended warranty—although my VIN is not part of either action. Much of my own research has involved the review of the many piecemeal responses to NHTSA Inquiry EA18-003. The component which failed is Part number: 5K0-953-569 AS. The part is supplied by Valeo (otherwise referred to as Valeo Robust), and appearing to be in the class CW50/2012---for the VW CC model years 2012-2016 (see below, Table one: Clock spring part identifier). According to confirmation with Michelle Stokes at Riverhead Bay Motors on 2/18/2019—part 5K0-953-569 AS is THE ONLY clock spring that is available to my car INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: THERE HAVE BEEN 3 INCIDENTS IN WHICH MY VEHICLE SUDDENLY, WITHOUT WARNING SHUTS DOWN (ABSOLUTELY NO POWER) WHILE I AM DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH. I WAS FORTUNATE THAT THERE WAS SIGNIFICANT TRAFFIC AND THE VEHICLE HAD ENOUGH MOMENTUM TO GET TO THE EMERGENCY LANE. I PLACED THE VEHICLE IN PARK AND LET IT SIT FOR APPROXIMATELY 3 TO 5 MINUTES. I THEN PUSHED THE START BUTTON AND IT STARTED WITHOUT INCIDENT. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO RIVERSIDE VOLKSWAGEN WHERE THEY CONDUCTED A DIAGNOSTIC CHECK AND STATED THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. AFTER INFORMING THEM OF THE SAFETY RECALL, THEY SAID THERE WAS NOTHING THEY CAN DO AND DECLINED TO PROVIDE ME WITH A LOANER VEHICLE. THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE COULD NOT CONFIRM OR DENY IF THE ISSUES REPORTED WERE RELATED TO THE SAFETY RECALL. I THEN CONTACTED THE CUSTOMER RELATIONS OFFICE TO REQUEST FURTHER ASSISTANCE; HOWEVER, THEY SAID THERE WAS NOTHING THEY CAN DO AND I HAD TO WAIT UNTIL THE RECALL WAS RELEASED. I DO NOT HAVE AN ALTERNATE VEHICLE TO USE AND I COMMUTE A MINIMUM OF 80 MILES A DAY TO GO TO WORK. MY HUSBAND IS RECOVERING FROM A HEART SURGERY AND I HAVE A 2 YEAR OLD GRANDDAUGHTER, WHO ARE CONSISTENTLY INSIDE THIS VEHICLE. I AM IN SERIOUS FEAR FOR MY SAFETY AND THAT OF MY FAMILY'S. EVERYDAY I GO TO WORK, I FEAR I WILL BE REAR ENDED AND IT IS FRUSTRATING NOT KNOWING HOW LONG I WILL CONTINUE TO ENDURE THIS RISK, AS I WAS TOLD THE RECALL WILL BE ON HOLD FOR AN UNKNOWN PERIOD OF TIME. PLEASE HELP!

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with this car. In my opinion, it's a great car for rural and interstate highway conditions. It's not a racing car, but it handles very well and has plenty of power. Plus, it's really fuel efficient! After driving it for 21,000 miles, I can say that it has met all of my expectations. However, I do have one major disappointment: the CC burns oil. According to the owner's manual, oil consumption can be up to 1 quart per 1,200 miles (0.5 liters per 1,000 km), depending on driving conditions. It's definitely something to keep in mind, especially for new vehicles during the first 3,000 miles (5,000 km). Overall, I still think it's a great car and I'm happy with my purchase!

You can find the model specifications and technical details on the VW website, so I won't go into that. Instead, I'd like to share my personal impressions of the car. I recently purchased a 2014 CC sport in black for my daily commute, which is a 9-mile drive one way, five days a week, and I also take it on two road trips a year. This is my third VW, having previously owned a Jetta and a GTI. The buying experience was typical, but I was happy with the fair deal I received. The interior and exterior design, fit, and finish are all top-notch. The seams are close and even, the textures are supple, and the ergonomics are well thought out. Driving the car is a pleasure, with a softer ride than the GTI but still very firm. The engine is very responsive, and driving is effortless. However, I must mention that within 30 days of owning the car, the interior developed several squeaks and rattles, which the dealer was unwilling to fix. The driver's mini glove box even cut my hand, and the blower fan made a squaking noise in the morning. The blower eventually died and was replaced under warranty. When I turned the car in with 18,000 miles on it, at least two of the tires were worn out. The dealer said it was due to the steering angle from VW. Twice, I was stuck at a gas station with the fuel door frozen shut (even though there was no recent moisture or snow), and one of the rear seats was locked in the up position, making it impossible to load any long items from the trunk. Despite these issues, the car's comfort, powertrain, and driveability are its strong points, and it's no wonder they were giving them away.

German cars can be quite expensive to maintain, but it's important to note that proper maintenance can greatly extend the life of the vehicle. While some parts may need to be replaced more frequently than others, it's important to address any issues promptly to avoid further damage. It's also worth noting that many luxury car brands, not just German ones, require more maintenance than non-luxury brands. However, with proper care and attention, these cars can still provide a great driving experience. It's important to do your research and choose a vehicle that fits your budget and lifestyle.

Although I have had some issues with my 2013 Volkswagen CC, I would like to share my experience. In the past 40,000 miles, I have encountered a few problems such as the clutch on the manual transmission burning out within 24 hours of driving off the lot, which was surprising given my 20 years of experience driving manual. Additionally, there was an issue with the motor and the EPC warning, which was covered by a recall but is no longer covered. The trunk also pops open whenever I put the car in reverse, and the adaptive headlight stopped working today. Despite these issues, I am considering going back to BMW. I would like to share my experience with others to help them make an informed decision when purchasing a car.

Congratulations on your 3rd VW lease and 2nd with the 2.0turbo and DSG transmission, and your 1st CC! It sounds like you have had some great experiences with this car, especially with its stylish and progressive design, both inside and out. The precise steering and responsive turbo 4 and gearing make for a fun and enjoyable driving experience, perfect for both highway cruising and commuting. While the occasional slow shifts in traffic can be a bit of a challenge, it's great to hear that the car lives up to the 'drivers wanted' campaign slogan that VW no longer uses. However, it's unfortunate to hear that you've had some issues with the car and the VW brand overall. It's understandable that the rattles and premature wear on the tires would be frustrating, and the gas door getting frozen closed in cold weather is definitely not ideal. It's great to hear that you were able to find a domestic brand that you're happy with. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

Firstly, the gas and brake pedals are positioned very close together, almost overlapping. Secondly, when driving at very low speeds, such as in bumper-to-bumper traffic, the engine feels like it might stall as you alternate between tapping the gas and brake pedals (although it never actually stalls, it does shake a bit). Thirdly, the window is supposed to automatically lower slightly when the door is opened, but it often doesn't work (as people getting into the car just grab the handle and pull before the auto-down feature kicks in). Fourthly, it's impossible not to hit your head when getting into the car because the window sill is too low. Finally, the horn is very sensitive and even the lightest tap results in a full second of honking.

Your CC is amazing! It perfectly combines luxurious appointments with the ruggedness of a sports car.

I've had my CC for 2 months and I must say, I absolutely love it! So far, I haven't had any issues to report. The only thing I would change is that I feel it should come standard with the VW Fender sound system. The stock system in mine is not the greatest - it can be very tinny sounding with some distortion. Additionally, satellite radio cuts out with any overhead impediment (like being under a roof at the bank teller). Other than that, things have been great. I love the styling inside and out. The engine is peppy and powerful enough for me and I've gotten pretty good mileage - roughly 32 mpg average according to the trip computer. I'm interested to see how it will do in winter driving.

Congratulations on your new 2013 CC LUX in black oak brown with the two-tone tan/black interior! It's great to hear that you're loving your new car. The CC is a beautifully designed car both inside and out, with elegant and sporty features. It's impressive that the car is still made in Germany, unlike the Passat and Jetta. The ride is tight and hard, which is typical of German cars, but it's also comfortable. The electronics, controls, knobs and buttons all feel high quality and operate smoothly, giving the car an Audi-like feel.
