The Hyundai Santa Fe (Korean: 현대 싼타페) is an automobile produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 2000. It is a five-door crossover SUV that either has front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. It is named after the city of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and was introduced for the 2001 model year as Hyundai's first SUV. The Santa Fe was a milestone in the company's restructuring program of the late 1990s because the SUV was a hit with American buyers. Between 2006 and 2012, the Santa Fe was positioned between the smaller Tucson compact crossover and the larger Veracruz.

The third-generation Santa Fe introduced in 2012 was available in two versions, which are regular (short) and extended long-wheelbase version. The short model was sold as the Santa Fe Sport in North America (three-row seating was not available) and simply Santa Fe in global markets (three-row seating was standard or optional), while the extended long-wheelbase model is called the Santa Fe in the US, Santa Fe XL in Canada and called the Hyundai Maxcruz in South Korea. The fifth and current generation was released in 2023 and omits diesel engines in favor of petrol hybrid powertrains.

As of 2022, the Santa Fe is positioned between the smaller Tucson – which the Santa Fe shares platform with – and the larger Palisade in Hyundai's global crossover SUV line-up.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-27
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-27
  • VIN: 5NMS2DA11PH
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I am afraid of getting myself or someone else killed because there is a 1-2 second lag after stepping on the gas pedal after coming to a stop. This is extremely dangerous. My street empties onto a county road with a blind curve. I have had several instances when the delay between the car moving after I’ve stepped on the gas has lead to oncoming cars needing to slam on their brakes to avoid hitting me. I even called the county and asked that they put up a “dangerous curve sign. They put up a squiggly arrow instead which has not helped. My previous gas vehicles made this turn safely for 20 years. My nephew told me it’s a new feature in cars called “stop and gol meant to save gas. I think saving my life is more important than saving a little bit of gas. It happens all the time so I will put todays date in the space below.

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-02-02
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-27
  • VIN: 5XYZTDLB3HG
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: My car has 81,000 miles on it, I have had regular oil changes and after reading many recalls on here I see I am definitely not alone. My check engine light stays on, after paying $100. for dealer to check the codes I was told nothing in particular showed a problem even though I have to put oil in my car between oil changes and there are no leaks on drive. Apparently the 100K mile warranty is not being honored from the other reports I have read on here. Why ??? The price of new cars is beyond reach and if dealer is claiming there is a warranty there be should be way to make them honor it!!!

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-17
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-26
  • VIN: 5XYZWDLA4HG
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The engine seized. Driving at 55 mph on a 4 lane highway outside of city limits, the vehicle went into limp mode. Luckily, it was later in the evening with less traffic and I was fortunate enough to be able to turn into a left turn lane and coast into an office building parking lot. There was no shoulder available if I had been in the right lane and somewhat of a rural area. There were no sensors that alerted me prior to this happening. But, when it did happen the dash board lit up like a Christmas tree! It was 6:30 pm, I coasted into a parking spot in the lot and turned the car off. It would not start and I contacted a tow service. I had it towed to an automotive shop near my home. They confirmed the next morning, that there was no oil on the dip stick and the engine seized. They alerted me to the fact that this has become a common problem with this Hyundai engine. I then had the vehicle towed the Hyundai dealership where we purchased the vehicle. We are the original owner. The vehicle is sitting at Rosen Hyundai in Algonquin, IL and should be available for inspection. Monica at the dealership called me after the inspection and confirmed that this is a common issue with this vehicle. She at first used the word recall...and when I asked if there was a recall, she said not a recall, but Hyundai has issued a BULLETIN about this problem. At first, she stated that my maintenance records were in order and being the original owner I qualified to file a claim with Hyundai for engine replacement. 3 days later, she called and stated that Hyundai needed more proof of maintenance than what they could pull off Carfax or my claim was going to be denied. She sent me a picture of the engine and stated that the valves show neglect. I replied of course they do....the engine seized! There was never ever any low oil warning light, check engine or or any warning lights what so ever prior to the event! Hyundai admitted that there is no low oil sensor warning.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-10
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-23
  • VIN: 5NMS5DAL8PH
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Brake rotors warped. Beginning at approximately 5k miles, the steering began exhibiting a juddering upon applying braking. Over time, the juddering became more pronounced. At approximately 15k miles, I took the vehicle to the dealer. The dealer confirmed that the brake rotors were warped. The defective brake components put my safety at risk, as well as the safety of my passengers and others traveling on the road by impairing my ability to safely stop the vehicle and impairing my ability to safely operate the vehicle while braking. There were no safety lights or warnings. I am aware that there has been a technical service bulletin for this exact issue for this model/year vehicle. Neither Hyundai nor the dealer ever altered me to the possibility that the brake rotors might warp due to defective components. Hyundai has thus far refused to cover the full cost of repairs, totaling over $1,400.00.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-21
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-23
  • VIN: KM8S5DA16NU
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
  • Summary: Was driving home from work on the highway at highway speeds and suddenly lost the ability to accelerate with a "Check Hybrid System" warning. At the time of loss of power, I was crossing a bridge and got stuck in the middle of the bridge. I also notice the oil indicator light come on. The engine remained on as far as I can tell but it wouldn't go with the accelerator pedal pressed. I placed the car in park and turned off the vehicle while blocking bridge traffic. 15 seconds later, I turned the vehicle back on, vehicle said ready to drive. I put the car in drive and everything worked normally as best I can tell. Still nervous driving the car for fear of it happening again. Called dealer service but they were closed. What I don't understand is there was 2 recalls for Hyundai Sante Fe hybrids 2022 but when I put in my VIN it said no recalls. Why is it only associated with a VIN?

Car ride is okay, but the tires can be a bit noisy. The AC unit can sometimes go out on hot and humid days, and the dealer has been unable to replicate the issue. The brakes squealed when the car was new, but the dealer was unable to replicate the issue. There has been a major problem with the transmission, as the auto transmission slips when downshifting and upshifting between 20-40 mph. I am bringing it in next week, and I hope the dealer can replicate the issue. While I have had some issues with this Hyundai, I am hoping to resolve them and keep the car for a while longer.

Unfortunately, our 2008 Hyundai did not meet our expectations. Despite our investment of 10,000 dollars, we experienced numerous issues with the transmission, engine, wheel alignment, and sound system. Additionally, the gas mileage was poor. After only six months of ownership, we made the difficult decision to trade it in, incurring a significant loss of almost 18,000 dollars. While we purchased the car as a demo with low miles, we cannot recommend this model and will not be considering another Hyundai in the future.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with the 2019 Turbo that I leased recently. Unfortunately, I did experience some issues with hard jerking when shifting, which was a bit frustrating. However, the dealership was very helpful and replaced the transmission for me. Although I did experience some trouble with acceleration after the replacement, the dealership was quick to address the issue. While I did have some trouble getting in touch with customer support at Hyundai, overall I appreciate the dealership's efforts to resolve the issue. Thank you!

I am disappointed with the quality of my Hyundai. The clear coat on the hatch door and driver's side mirror has started peeling, and there is rust on the mirror and wiper arms, despite my car having just over 60,000 miles. This is not up to the standard of workmanship I expect. Even though my car was parked in a garage most of the time, it still experienced these issues. I was surprised to find out that my daughter, who also owns a Hyundai, is having the same problem. I discovered that even some 2012 models had similar issues. This experience has made me hesitant to purchase another Hyundai product.

This car has been a major disappointment. Despite being fully loaded, it started malfunctioning at a mere 2100 miles. The computer module malfunctioned, causing the car to go into collision control mode and lose power steering - a potentially life-threatening issue. While Hyundai offers many impressive features at a lower price point, their inability to resolve this problem has significantly impacted our opinion of this vehicle. Additionally, the car has started to experience lane correction and collision warnings without any apparent cause. We brought it to the dealer, who performed a fix, but it remains to be seen whether the issue has been fully resolved. Given the severity of these malfunctions, we believe that this should be a recall rather than just a TSB. As a car owner, I have never experienced such dangerous malfunctions before.

September 2020 Update - Now has 108,000 miles on it. I haven't driven it much since Covid-19 hit. I wanted to share a cautionary tale. Long story short, the car is still a solid vehicle, but it's important to have it worked on by a reputable and honest service department/dealer. I brought it in to have the 100,000 mile spark plug change and brake job at a Hyundai dealership that was closer to me than the usual one I take it to, lured by the shorter distance and a coupon. Unfortunately, the work was not done properly and the car started misfiring. I had to go back three times before the dealership finally diagnosed the issue, but they claimed no responsibility, even though the car had never misfired before they worked on it. They offered to fix it for almost another $700.00, but I decided to take it to my usual dealership instead. Thankfully, they discovered that the mechanic at the other place had re-used the ten-year-old gaskets instead of replacing them as specified, failed to reattach the wiring harness for the ignition coils properly, and never re-installed a necessary bolt used to secure a bracket that they had to open up to do the work. This was a half-assed job. I'm grateful for the second dealer, who fixed the car with integrity and competence. I later found out that the service manager had quit the day before my appointment, and that they were understaffed by 6 people and had 18 vehicles waiting for their engines to be replaced as part of a massive recall by Hyundai on some 2.0l and 2.4l engines. I love the vehicle, but as with any other, it needs to have dedicated, honest repair people work on it.2019 Update - I'm thrilled with this vehicle! In the little over 9 years and 100,000 miles I've had it (purchased new), it has never let me down. I will now need to get the spark plugs replaced as part of routine maintenance, but it's still running strong and I really like it. The evaluation I did 2 years ago still holds true--read on. 2017 review - PROS: Besides replacing the lower ball joints at around 72,000, I've just had routine maintenance thus far (oil changes, tranny flush). Replaced brakes and tires at 63,000 and then had a six-point buck decide to charge straight at me on a country road the next day (on opening day, first deer ever!) which took out the ac condenser, the radiator, and the water pump--saved me the 60,000 mile radiator flush cost and I also got a few other replacement goodies thrown in for good measure (hood, bumper, sensors, grill, etc). The car itself has been amazing and I would whole-heartedly recommend it to anyone in the market. Other pros include: Great acceleration, smooth and agile handling, comfortable and durable seats, and a decent sound system. It's perfect for road trips or for grocery runs. The mileage is decent (20-22), given the way I like to push the pedal down. CONS: Other than the way Hyundai makes you purchase a $4000 package to get a sunroof, the only con in my experience is the lack of sound damping material--the cabin can get quite noisy at highway speed--the original tires were pretty loud (better now with new, softer tires--but still not great) and the wind noise at anything above 60 is pronounced and gets tiring. That would probably be the only reason I would sell it. I would also like AWD for those times it's necessary, although with global warming, it's becoming less and less of an issue every year. Apart from that, everything still feels tight and ship-shape--almost like a new car. I imagine it has a lot of life left in it yet. I plan to see how many miles I can get out of this beast before I send it off to greener pastures.I'll make sure to check in with you once your car hits 100,000 miles!

Make sure to take care of any recalls before purchasing the car. Additionally, it's worth checking if the fuel sending units have been replaced, as they may cause the car to fail inspection in some states. Repairs at a reputable shop are not too expensive. We have owned five Hyundai's since '99, including an Accent, Elantra, 06 Santa F, and two 07 Santa Fe's. The first one was unfortunately totaled, but I loved it so much that I bought another. The car's high mileage (138k now) has required some repairs, such as wheel bearings, brakes, and the aforementioned fuel sending units, but these are all normal for a car with this mileage. The engine still runs well and the transmission is tight. The heated seats and sunroof are fantastic.

I am thrilled with my 2019 Santa Fe Ultimat 2.0T! It is an incredible value for the price. The controls and electronics are so easy to use, and it has every safety feature you could imagine. The recent IIHS crash tests all received five stars, which is very reassuring. I was pleasantly surprised by how well it handles - it really holds the road, and the 2.0 Turbo has some serious power. The LED headlamps are fantastic - they light up the road without blinding oncoming traffic. And the Nav system is the best I've ever used in any car I've owned. It feels like a luxury vehicle, but without the hefty price tag - I've owned BMW, Mercedes, and Infinity SUVs, and I couldn't justify paying $52k for a similarly equipped luxury vehicle. After three test drives, I decided to purchase the Ultimate 2.0 T, and I picked it up last week. I took it on a 3-day, 1,000-mile trip, and I'm even more convinced that I made the right choice. It's truly the best SUV under $40k for the money!

We are absolutely thrilled with our Limited Ultimate, which has now clocked up 11,000 miles. After shopping around and narrowing down our options to the Honda Pilot and this car, we ultimately chose the Hyundai. One of the reasons we didn't go for the Pilot was because we didn't like seeing the entire rear suspension when following it - it looked unfinished. Additionally, we were concerned about Honda's cylinder deactivation, which has been problematic for many years and has well-documented and very expensive long-term issues. On the other hand, the Hyundai doesn't have cylinder deactivation or any other gimmicks or gizmos to squeeze out that last mile per gallon, and it's a very attractive vehicle. During our test drives, we found that the Santa Fe felt more car-like and had a much tighter turning radius. We even consulted with my neighbor, who has owned a used car lot for over 20 years, and he said,

Never had issues. I have owned an 03 and an 04. At 179000 miles I’m still going strong. Everything works. I have no issues like the other negative reviews I see here. 2/2022 I’m over 200000 miles and still love my car!!
