2023 Hyundai Santa fe problems

hyundai logo

The Hyundai Santa Fe (Korean: 현대 싼타페) is an automobile produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 2000. It is a five-door crossover SUV that either has front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. It is named after the city of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and was introduced for the 2001 model year as Hyundai's first SUV. The Santa Fe was a milestone in the company's restructuring program of the late 1990s because the SUV was a hit with American buyers. Between 2006 and 2012, the Santa Fe was positioned between the smaller Tucson compact crossover and the larger Veracruz.

The third-generation Santa Fe introduced in 2012 was available in two versions, which are regular (short) and extended long-wheelbase version. The short model was sold as the Santa Fe Sport in North America (three-row seating was not available) and simply Santa Fe in global markets (three-row seating was standard or optional), while the extended long-wheelbase model is called the Santa Fe in the US, Santa Fe XL in Canada and called the Hyundai Maxcruz in South Korea. The fifth and current generation was released in 2023 and omits diesel engines in favor of petrol hybrid powertrains.

As of 2022, the Santa Fe is positioned between the smaller Tucson – which the Santa Fe shares platform with – and the larger Palisade in Hyundai's global crossover SUV line-up.

Common 2023 Hyundai Santa fe problems

The 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to its transmission and in-car electronics.

One of the most significant issues is related to the transmission, with owners reporting unexpected revving into high RPMs, even while driving at low speeds. This issue has been reported to occur intermittently and can cause the vehicle to become stuck at low speeds, creating a potentially dangerous situation. Despite attempts to repair the issue through recalls, some owners have reported that the problem persists, and they are unsure if it will happen again.

Another common problem reported by owners is related to the in-car electronics, particularly the infotainment system. Some owners have reported that the interface prioritizes Apple devices over Android devices, even when the Android is selected. This issue has not been resolved, and it is now inconsistent.

The dual-clutch transmission (DCT) in the 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe has also been criticized by some owners, who believe that it does not belong in a family hauler. They argue that the regular torque converter-style automatic transmission is more reliable and suitable for this type of vehicle.

It is important to note that Hyundai has a five-year transferable warranty, which means that many examples of the 2023 Santa Fe will still have some cover left. This warranty is a significant advantage for owners, as it can help cover the cost of any necessary repairs.

In summary, the 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe has several common problems related to its transmission and in-car electronics. While some of these issues have been addressed through recalls, others persist, causing frustration and concern for some owners. However, the five-year transferable warranty provides some peace of mind for those who own or are considering purchasing this vehicle.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-27
  • VIN: 5NMS2DA11PH
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I am afraid of getting myself or someone else killed because there is a 1-2 second lag after stepping on the gas pedal after coming to a stop. This is extremely dangerous. My street empties onto a county road with a blind curve. I have had several instances when the delay between the car moving after I’ve stepped on the gas has lead to oncoming cars needing to slam on their brakes to avoid hitting me. I even called the county and asked that they put up a “dangerous curve sign. They put up a squiggly arrow instead which has not helped. My previous gas vehicles made this turn safely for 20 years. My nephew told me it’s a new feature in cars called “stop and gol meant to save gas. I think saving my life is more important than saving a little bit of gas. It happens all the time so I will put todays date in the space below.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-10
  • VIN: 5NMS5DAL8PH
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Brake rotors warped. Beginning at approximately 5k miles, the steering began exhibiting a juddering upon applying braking. Over time, the juddering became more pronounced. At approximately 15k miles, I took the vehicle to the dealer. The dealer confirmed that the brake rotors were warped. The defective brake components put my safety at risk, as well as the safety of my passengers and others traveling on the road by impairing my ability to safely stop the vehicle and impairing my ability to safely operate the vehicle while braking. There were no safety lights or warnings. I am aware that there has been a technical service bulletin for this exact issue for this model/year vehicle. Neither Hyundai nor the dealer ever altered me to the possibility that the brake rotors might warp due to defective components. Hyundai has thus far refused to cover the full cost of repairs, totaling over $1,400.00.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-08
  • VIN: 5NMS5DA16PH
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: I have pinging sound coming from the engine when I accelerate. Transmission seems to skip during acceleration. Took it to the dealership for repair since the car is under warranty. Dealership replaced a bearing in the axle and replaced the turbo. I’m still having the same issues. Dealership had my car for 5 weeks dealing with this issue. I feel they don’t know what’s causing the problem.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-09
  • VIN: 5NMS2DA18PH
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: The Automatic Emergency Braking System, on multiple occasions now, has slammed on its brakes at highway speed when there are no obstacles, barriers, or even vehicles in sight ahead of my wife. This happened to me the other day also when exiting the highway onto an exit ramp when it "Detected Collision" when *nothing* was around me, no vehicles or barriers within any reasonable distance. It's going to end up causing someone to rear end me or her - absolutely unsafe and 100% putting my wife and child at risk. We're taking it to the dealership on Saturday and have verbally informed them of the issue. No warnings, no messages, no nothing prior to incident - the car is practically brand new.

LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-20
  • VIN: 5NMS5DA1XPH
  • Components: LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: Three times this has happened. The instances occurred on Highway 680 between Pleasanton and San Jose. I was going the speed limit - 65 miles per hour - as were tons of cars around me. Suddenly the car would brake, startling me because I was nowhere near another car. It frightened me a lot! I think it is the automatic braking system - either the front end collision warning or the blind spot collision warning. It could have easily resulted in an accident. I took it to the Hyundai dealership, and they knew they could not likely duplicate it. They showed me where to turn off the vehicle control (braking) for the front end collision warning and the blind spot collision warning. I have read on the Internet several other parties that have experienced this - car-controlled braking while traveling at high speed with lots of cars around.

  • VIN: 5NMS5DAL6PH
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The vehicle's software update initiates upon start-up without the option to delay to a different time. The three updates I've received this year have taken 20-30 minutes each to complete, while I'm traveling. These updates disable hands-free calling, all media and GPS. I can't confirm if any other vehicle safety components are disabled. I don't use them. I contacted my dealer and they stated that's how it works, and there is no option to delay the update. When the update initiates it states the update can continue without the vehicle "ON". Wouldn't it be safer to have the ability to schedule it to a later time when the vehicle isn't being used? Similar to a cellphone update?

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-17
  • VIN: 5NMS44AL2PH
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: The forward collision warning system engages and slows the car, often very abruptly, when on the highway and only when cruise control is on. It happens after we have been on the highway for a few hours, thus the dealer cannot reproduce the incident. It happens a few times on every road trip and is very disturbing when there are no other vehicles or obstacles in the road or nearby. We have reported this to the dealer several times and they can find nothing wrong. I provided a photo to the dealer of the dashboard showing the cruise control on, the forward collision system DISENGAGED, and the forward collision warning activated. Dealer states they have recalibrated the system but can replace no parts unless a part is found to be faulty. The latest suggestion yesterday from the dealer was to "get out" of the car before the issue gets worse.

  • Summary: I purchased a 2023 SantaFe brand new mid-January, In June I noticed an issue with the car. I called Steele Hyundai in June to get an appointment and was told by Margarita that they didn’t have availability until September. REALLY. So, I went online and filled out an appointment and got an earlier appointment for August. Crazy Right? I then contacted Hyundai corporate to file a complaint, and was given a case number and Tina is the case worker. I brought the car in on [XXX] and left it there till [XXX]. Problem ended up a transmission needed replacement. WOW, quality!! I picked the car up on that Friday and it sat in the garage during labor day weekend. I first got back in the vehicle on Tuesday, [XXX] and knew immediately it wasn’t fixed. I decided to go to a different dealership for service World Car Hyundai in San Antonio and made an appointment for [XXX]. I called [XXX], spoke with Todd and explained needing a loaner. He asked me what I was bringing it in for, told him I had the transmission replaced. He said to give it a week to get the computer to adjust to my driving. SAY WHAT? So, I did and no bueno. I called again on Thursday, [XXX] to bring it in to World Car and spoke with Justin and made an appointment for Tuesday [XXX]. On Saturday, [XXX], we took the car to Austin for my husband to determine what he thought, he said, “this car isn’t drivable”. On Monday, [XXX], I cancelled my appointment for World Car because Todd said Steele knows the history of what work they did, and it would be best. My husband dropped the car off at Steele on Monday without an appointment. The service director Rene is familiar with my vehicle and today when I called him about the car, he said it’s the TRANSMISSION AGAIN. My question is what is wrong with the quality of the engineering or the quality of the service technology. I DON’T trust this car, I need a SOLUTION. I need an answer. I need you to fix this problem with this C INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-30
  • VIN: 5NMS3DA13PH
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: It started in April 2024. After the dealership performed an oil change we heard a strange noise whenever we accelerated. The dealership said it was either the transmission or the hybrid motor and both were on back order (usually an indicator that these parts are in great demand). After several weeks both parts arrived but they only replaced the transmission because that took care of the noise. A few days after we got the car back, we heard a clunking sound whenever we shifted. I tried to take the car to a different dealership but they said we had to return to the place that installed the transmission because bolts were missing. We went back to that dealership and they said no bolts were missing but they did need to be tightened. After that the clunking stopped, however, the next day we started experiencing other problems. The check engine and master system lights came on and the car would hesitate when accelerating. This was extremely dangerous when we were on the freeway and/or trying to accelerate from a traffic signal. Also, it had trouble shifting into reverse. The dealership said the codes were indicating the hybrid system battery needed to be replaced. The car has less than 20k miles.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-03
  • VIN: 5NMS3DA11PH
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: One of the 2 horns has stopped working. After checking the Hyundai Forum website, I've found that one or both horns has suddenly went dead on not just Santa Fe's, but virtually all Hyundai models across the board. This seems to be a widespread defect. This is very dangerous because the cessation of operation is sudden and without warning (ie, no dashboard warning light). If there is a need for the driver to sound a horn in a time of danger there may be absolutely no way to give a warning.

There was no sound when the horn pad was depressed. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who informed the contact about the cost for the repair, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted, opened a case, but no additional assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 72,000.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-03
  • VIN: 5NMS54AL8PH
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Driving at a low speed and blind spot warning light comes on, then all warnings light up and car loses all power and goes into limp mode. Engine light stays on, but will start back up after it is shut off, open and shut car door and restart. Engine light stays on. Has happened to me three or four times. In the past, the engine light will eventually go off before I can get it to the dealership. Hyundai said they couldn’t duplicate the problem last time it was taken in, so nothing could be done. Gives error code P063512 each time and says EMS which I assume means emissions.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-01
  • VIN: 5NMS3DAJ6PH
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: A few times recently our car has had a hard time starting even though it's only a year old. It's like it's having a hard time turning over. And then when driving, it has a hard time accelerating - it almost feels like the car is in neutral while trying to drive. It jerks and shimmies to the point where you have to pull over to see what's going on. We were on a pretty busy road and couldn't accelerate to the point of safely merging into traffic. An online forum said it was a "loose ground" that's causing the acceleration issues.

Negative 2023 Hyundai Santa fe car reviews

  1. Geovanni Huels 2024-11-25

Love almost everything about this car, but the reported 44 inches of front legroom isn’t really there unless you put your feet under the brake pedal! I’m 6’4” and thought that with the reported 44 inches, there would be plenty of legroom, but unfortunately, I’m finding that it’s not there, no matter how I adjust the seat. However, the seats, ride and tech are great, and the car is very fast and quiet. My wife’s Cadillac XT5 with a reported 41” has more room.

  2. Barrett Nader 2024-10-08

The new design of the center console doesn't seem to be very practical. The cup holders are not very convenient and the storage space underneath might cause things to roll out and tangle in your feet while driving. I personally didn't feel comfortable with it while sitting in the car.

  3. Kole Stanton 2024-07-11

Despite having less than 5000 miles, the infotainment center malfunctioned. The dealer has acknowledged the issue and is currently working on resolving it. Although it has been two months, I am confident that the dealer is doing everything they can to fix the problem. While it is frustrating that the radio unit is on emergency backorder, I am grateful that it was not a more critical engine part. Overall, I have had a positive experience with Hyundai products and I look forward to continuing to use them in the future.

  4. Fletcher Schroeder 2024-07-08

Can someone please help me understand the design of this car? The camera screens on the dashboard for lane changes seem like a questionable choice. It may encourage drivers to look down instead of keeping their eyes on the road. The lane assist feature could be helpful, but it may not be suitable for all driving situations. The steering and suspension could also use some improvement. The push button shifting is unique, but it may not be the most practical location. Overall, my experience with this car was not the best, but I am grateful that it was a rental and I do not have to see it again.

  5. Jayce Schultz 2024-06-20

I have only driven 1200 miles before, when I rented a car from FL to PA. The car was almost new with only 730 miles on it. Here are some pros: the interior was of high quality and upscale, with a classy looking synthetic leather interior. The steering wheel was virtually identical to my CX9, and the seats were very comfortable, with lots of legroom and adjustability. We averaged 30mpg on our trip, and the ride was quiet and controlled with 18 inch wheels and 60 aspect ratio tires. The panoramic roof was a nice touch, and there was a storage shelf in front of the passenger and more storage under the console. The HK stereo was also a nice feature. However, there were some negatives: the base engine was grossly underpowered, and I would never buy a car with this engine. The door pocket storage was very small, and the back of the driver's seat was plastic with no storage. While the center console was convenient, there needs to be a command wheel to go through changes, and the center console armrest is placed too far back, making it impossible to rest your elbow. The digital instrument panel was also strange, with only a speedo and tachometer, and no gas gauge or water temperature gauge. You only have a number with miles remaining for gas, and no water temperature information. The speedo and tachometer are placed off to the left and right, with the trip meter in the middle, and there is a constant moving annoying blue line showing gas mileage. The clock is placed on the center display. The wheels and tires are great for a comfy ride, but not the best for handling. Overall, I would never consider buying this car without the bigger engine, but with that extra cost, there are lots of better alternatives, including my CX9.

I was really excited about getting a Subaru Outback, but after doing some research and taking a test drive, I decided to explore other options. Although I've always driven Volkswagens, I decided to take a chance and check out a 2023 Santa Fe SEL at a Hyundai dealership. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it had all the same features as the Outback, except for a sunroof which wasn't a big deal for me. What's more, it had a better warranty and was much more affordable. The ride was incredibly smooth and the steering felt sturdy and solid. It was the perfect size for me, since I don't have any kids or pets and just needed something comfortable for my daily commute. I was pleasantly surprised by the navigation, wireless phone charging, and remote start, as well as the standard sound system which was pretty good. I'm absolutely thrilled with my purchase!

Very quiet and smooth ride! We traded in our Cadillac and found that the Hyundai had most of the same features, plus a couple more.

  3. Porter Mraz 2024-10-28

Roomy, nicely equipped, and a very rewarding driving experience.

I noticed that you've had your Hyundai for a few months now, and I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying it so much! It sounds like the technology, ride quality, and cabin noise are all big improvements over your previous Honda Pilot. It's great to hear that you're so satisfied with your purchase that you even bought your daughter a 2023 Elantra. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with Hyundai!

    I really like this SUV.
