The Hyundai Santa Fe (Korean: 현대 싼타페) is an automobile produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 2000. It is a five-door crossover SUV that either has front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. It is named after the city of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and was introduced for the 2001 model year as Hyundai's first SUV. The Santa Fe was a milestone in the company's restructuring program of the late 1990s because the SUV was a hit with American buyers. Between 2006 and 2012, the Santa Fe was positioned between the smaller Tucson compact crossover and the larger Veracruz.

The third-generation Santa Fe introduced in 2012 was available in two versions, which are regular (short) and extended long-wheelbase version. The short model was sold as the Santa Fe Sport in North America (three-row seating was not available) and simply Santa Fe in global markets (three-row seating was standard or optional), while the extended long-wheelbase model is called the Santa Fe in the US, Santa Fe XL in Canada and called the Hyundai Maxcruz in South Korea. The fifth and current generation was released in 2023 and omits diesel engines in favor of petrol hybrid powertrains.

As of 2022, the Santa Fe is positioned between the smaller Tucson – which the Santa Fe shares platform with – and the larger Palisade in Hyundai's global crossover SUV line-up.

Common 2017 Hyundai Santa fe problems

The Hyundai Santa Fe 2017 has been reported to have several common problems, including engine performance issues, no sound from speakers, transmission hesitation, steering pulling to one side, and navigation system issues.

One of the most widespread problems is engine performance issues due to crankshaft position sensor failure. This issue can cause the engine to stall, misfire, or have reduced power, which can be dangerous while driving. It is recommended to replace the faulty sensor to resolve this problem.

Another common issue is no sound from speakers, which can be frustrating for drivers who rely on their car's audio system for entertainment or navigation. This problem can be caused by faulty speakers, wiring, or a blown fuse, and may require professional diagnosis and repair.

Transmission hesitation is also a common problem in the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe, with many owners reporting slow shifting between gears.

The steering system in the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe has also been reported to pull to one side, which can be dangerous while driving, especially at high speeds.

Navigation system issues have also been reported by some owners, with the stereo system freezing and requiring a reboot to get it working again. This problem can be resolved with software updates available for free from Hyundai dealers.

In addition to these common problems, there have been six recalls on the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe, including issues with the ABS unit overheating or causing a fire while parked and engine bearing wear that can cause the engine to seize up. Hyundai has issued recalls and will replace the affected parts for free on affected models.

Overall, the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe has some common problems that can affect its performance and safety, but most of these issues can be resolved with software updates, recalibration, or replacement of affected parts under warranty. It is recommended to stay up-to-date with recalls and maintenance to ensure the longevity and safety of the vehicle.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-02-02
  • VIN: 5XYZTDLB3HG
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: My car has 81,000 miles on it, I have had regular oil changes and after reading many recalls on here I see I am definitely not alone. My check engine light stays on, after paying $100. for dealer to check the codes I was told nothing in particular showed a problem even though I have to put oil in my car between oil changes and there are no leaks on drive. Apparently the 100K mile warranty is not being honored from the other reports I have read on here. Why ??? The price of new cars is beyond reach and if dealer is claiming there is a warranty there be should be way to make them honor it!!!

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-17
  • VIN: 5XYZWDLA4HG
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The engine seized. Driving at 55 mph on a 4 lane highway outside of city limits, the vehicle went into limp mode. Luckily, it was later in the evening with less traffic and I was fortunate enough to be able to turn into a left turn lane and coast into an office building parking lot. There was no shoulder available if I had been in the right lane and somewhat of a rural area. There were no sensors that alerted me prior to this happening. But, when it did happen the dash board lit up like a Christmas tree! It was 6:30 pm, I coasted into a parking spot in the lot and turned the car off. It would not start and I contacted a tow service. I had it towed to an automotive shop near my home. They confirmed the next morning, that there was no oil on the dip stick and the engine seized. They alerted me to the fact that this has become a common problem with this Hyundai engine. I then had the vehicle towed the Hyundai dealership where we purchased the vehicle. We are the original owner. The vehicle is sitting at Rosen Hyundai in Algonquin, IL and should be available for inspection. Monica at the dealership called me after the inspection and confirmed that this is a common issue with this vehicle. She at first used the word recall...and when I asked if there was a recall, she said not a recall, but Hyundai has issued a BULLETIN about this problem. At first, she stated that my maintenance records were in order and being the original owner I qualified to file a claim with Hyundai for engine replacement. 3 days later, she called and stated that Hyundai needed more proof of maintenance than what they could pull off Carfax or my claim was going to be denied. She sent me a picture of the engine and stated that the valves show neglect. I replied of course they do....the engine seized! There was never ever any low oil warning light, check engine or or any warning lights what so ever prior to the event! Hyundai admitted that there is no low oil sensor warning.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-03
  • VIN: KM8SN4HF0HU
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: The liftgate randomly closes and I have to jump out of the way to avoid it hitting me. This obviously poses a huge risk to my young children when they are nearby. In addition to that, the liftgate will sometimes only open a quarter or half of the way, sometimes all the way then suddenly reverse and start closing, and sometimes does not open at all. I've gone on Hyundai forums online and found numerous other people with the exact same complaint. Seems to be effecting cars made from 2016 - 2020. I have multiple videos of this but can't upload them as you only accept pictures.

It drives fine, there’s no oil leaks, no smoke from the tailpipe. We took the car to Hyundai and they did their oil consumption tests. They came to the conclusion that this was within the normal range and would do nothing for us. This needs to be fixed, Hyundai!

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-01
  • VIN: KM8SR4HF3HU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Like many others, car consumed a quart of oil each 500-1,000 miles driven. Car received synthetic oil changes every other month along with additional quarts of oil in between oil changes. All service records maintained with receipts of additional oil quarts purchased. Car NEVER displayed any warning lights for low oil pressure or check engine lights. While driving on the highway at 65 MPH, engine seized. Was able to pull over safely and had car towed to the dealership. Service manager at dealer claims it will be over $20k to fix but Hyundai is only willing to cover 70% because it’s no longer covered under warranty and isn’t backed by their extended warranty offer. What a way to admit fault but gaslighting the consumer into believing it’s the consumer’s fault for a faulty product. Hyundai does not allow outside mechanics to look at vehicle or make repairs if you want them to take responsibility. So stuck with paying inflated dealer fees for repair and labor.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-12-23
  • VIN: KM8SRDHF5HU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: We purchased a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe SE ULTIMATE from Hampton Hyundai in December of 2019. The vehicle has the V6 3.3 Liter Lambda II motor. At the time of purchase it had 44,969 miles on it and we paid roughly $27,000 for the vehicle and associated service package. We routinely had the vehicle serviced according to the recommended service schedule. In early 2022 we realized that the engine began burning oil at an alarming rate. We were adding roughly 1.5 quarts every 1,000 miles to maintain a safe level. This was done at a certified mechanic. After inquiring with Hampton Hyundai we were informed that this is considered normal operation and to be expected. Based on that information, we proceeded to routinely check oil levels and maintain them accordingly. On December 23rd, 2022, with roughly 81,000 miles on the vehicle, we experienced a knocking noise coming from the engine. I immediately pulled the vehicle to the side of the road to investigate the possible cause. I checked the oil and inspected the engine for anything that seemed to be out of place. There was nothing that seemed uncommon to the layman eye, with this, we immediately returned home with the vehicle. From here we had it towed to Certified Automotive Repairs and Service (C.A.R.S) and then to Hampton Hyundai. Both locations told us we needed a full engine replacement. We have requested assistance from Hampton Hyundai and Hyundai Motor America to assist with the cost of replacement and have been denied. The quote for a new motor and labor to install is nearly $20,000 and we were told that the cost is so high because Hyundai does not make the motor anymore and each individual part would need to be ordered and assembled. Our vehicle is currently at Hampton Hyundai and we are planning on having it towed back to our home.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-27
  • VIN: 5XYZTDLB1HG
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The engine in my 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe malfunctioned due to issues with the connecting rod bearings, a known defect for this model. While driving on the highway, the engine began to slow down and fail, creating a hazardous situation that jeopardized my safety and that of other road users. A diagnostic performed at World Car Hyundai South confirmed that the problem was with the connecting rod bearings. Despite the severity of the issue and the fact that it is a documented problem with this model, Hyundai's Goodwill Program and warranty did not cover the engine replacement. The manufacturer cited missing maintenance records from previous owners as the reason for denial. I provided comprehensive service records for the vehicle from the time it was in my possession. The refusal to cover the repair based on the absence of previous records on Carfax overlooks that previous owners may have used service providers not reporting to Carfax. Additionally, there were no warning lamps or messages before the engine failure. Hyundai's decision to deny coverage, given the known defect in this model, suggests an attempt to avoid responsibility.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-17
  • VIN: 5XYZT3LB4HG
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: Current mileage is 80,000. For the last 30,000 miles the engine oil burns or leaks within a month of it being changed. When I return to the shop to get yet another oil change. They investigate for leaks and find nothing. They end up topping it off vs charging me. As I barely put a hundred miles on the vehicle since the last change. Even when I barely drive between oil changes, I end up checking the stick frequently to ensure it’s not leaking or burning oil until the next change. Yet it always does. It also randomly acts like it doesn’t want to start. Doesn’t matter if it’s cold, hot or normal kind of day. Take it to dealer or auto repair shop for a diagnostic check and nothing is found. They check the starter, circuits, battery, and alternator. Nothing. This happens multiple times a yr. I’ve never owned a vehicle that does this before. Even my old 200+ mile vehicle never did this. This Hyundai is only 7 yrs old and under 85,000 miles. It’s baffling.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-06
  • VIN: KM8SNDHF9HU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: My 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe has roughly 120,000 miles on it and an engine light came on. I brought the vehicle into an automotive shop where they stated the vehicle was very low on oil, they checked the code and then reset it. After they drove the vehicle, it began "knocking" and the code came back on. They stated in the paperwork, "[t]his code is caused by the ecm getting a response from the solenoids that the camshaft is off; engine is not timed properly. This can be caused by a stretched timing chain or if the chain jumps a tooth." The oil has been changed less than 2,500 miles prior, no light ever came on to indicate that it was low, there was no indication that it was burning excessive amounts of oil, and I park in the same spot each day with no sign of oil leakage. There were no warning signs that the oil was low or that there were issues with the engine. This engine easily could have overheated and seized with absolutely no warning that it was coming. I was set to drive with my family across the country right before this happened and we easily could have been driving on the highway if/when the engine seized. The automotive repair shop quoted $9,149.01 to fix the issues and I owe a little more than $10,000 on it. I don't want to risk repairing it since the faulty engine will likely have this issue again in the near future and I am at a loss for how to proceed, especially with many having the same issue.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-24
  • VIN: KM8SM4HF3HU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: On 7/24/24 I was driving off the expressway near my home when as I was switching lanes the vehicle made a loud clunk noise (it was like the sound of a lock turning but louder) and stopped accelerating, eventually coming to a full stop in the middle of the lane. Since I was blocking the lane, and it was during rush hour, I called the police to have them escort me out of the lane and into the middle divide. I had my vehicle towed to my home where my personal mechanic showed up to do an inspection. He tried turning on the car, but it only made a single-clicking noise. Next, he checked the oil and discovered that the dipstick was completely dry. He advised that the engine was seized due to no oil and suggested that I reach out to the location I had my last oil change at. An independent inspector completed a diagnostic on the vehicle and concluded the following: The top of this engine was dry and there were no oil stains on the underside of the hood or pooled in the engine compartment to suggest this engine leaked or displaced oil from the fill hole area. The oil fill cap was in the valve cover, tight and properly orientated. The oil pan drain plug was tight in the pan and not leaking. No torque seal or paint had been used on the drain plug or the oil pan. There was no impact damage to the oil pan. The inspector verified the oil filter housing and cover were dry with no signs of an active leak. The inspector verified the engine had been leaking oil to an active drip from the rear main engine oil seal, valve cover gaskets and from the oil pan gasket. There was also an excessive amount of soot and wetness in the tailpipes consistent with excessive oil consumption and the inspector observed a film of oil was present on the rear of the vehicle at both sides further indicating excessive oil consumption. The inspector attempted to start the engine and verified there was only a single clunk noise audible in the engine it could not be rotated indicating it was internally seized.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-22
  • VIN: 5XYZUDLB9HG
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: My 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport has less than 100,000 miles and has been regularly serviced. On [XXX], the vehicle stopped suddenly and dangerously on the highway. No warning light engaged. Fortunately, I was able to roll to the breakdown lane without causing an accident. The vehicle had traveled 2,828 miles since its last oil change on March 30, 2024. My mechanic, Todd's Auto Repair in Beverly, Massachusetts, looked for leaks and performed an oil change. The vehicle traveled 894 miles before requiring another 5 quarts of oil on June 11, 2024. The vehicle traveled another 969 miles since last service and required 3 quarts of oil on July 25, 2024. The mechanic is therefore confident that the engine is burning through the oil at an alarming rate, with no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms present to protect the driver. I have an appointment for the vehicle to be inspected by a Hyundai dealer on August 12, 2024. The service center scheduler was resolute that there is nothing the Hyundai corporation will do for oil over-consumption. Hyundai customer Facebook groups indicate that this is a very common problem, putting drivers in peril. We welcome an inspection should you request one. The affected vehicles have a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) that may not have been set in the correct mode during vehicle assembly, and therefore will not provide an appropriate warning in the event of an underinflated tire. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 138, "Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems."
  • Consequence: An underinflated inflated tire can increase the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the TPMS sensors, free of charge. The recall began March 31, 2017. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's number for the recall is 159.

  • Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor America
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING
  • Summary: Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 Tucson vehicles manufactured May 19, 2015, to November 14, 2016, and 2017 Santa Fe vehicles manufactured November 28, 2015, to November 14, 2016. The affected vehicles may be equipped with an accessory trailer hitch wiring harness that, due to a malfunction of the tow hitch module, may result, in the trailer brake lights being constantly illuminated. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, " Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."
  • Consequence: If the trailer brake lights stay illuminated while being used, other drivers may be confused, increasing the risk of a crash.

  • Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor America
  • Components: SEAT BELTS:FRONT:WARNING LIGHT/DEVICES
  • Summary: Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 Santa Fe vehicles manufactured September 1, 2015 to February 12, 2016. In the affected vehicles, the wires in the front seat belt buckle harnesses may be damaged by the seat's height adjuster mechanism, resulting in a failure to provide an audible warning when front seat occupants do not fasten their seat belts. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."
  • Consequence: Without a warning to remind the front seat occupants that their seat belts are not buckled, they may forget to buckle their seat belt, increasing their risk of injury in the event of a crash.
  • Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and reroute the wires in the front seat belt buckle harnesses to their proper locations, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on April 27, 2016. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's number for this recall is 141.

Negative 2017 Hyundai Santa fe car reviews

Although the car has a spacious interior, the uncomfortable headrest and driver seat can cause discomfort during long drives. At 100,000 miles, the alternator and ceiling lights failed, which is a common issue with this model.

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share an experience I had with my GPS unit. About a month ago, the time display on the head GPS unit disappeared. I went to the dealer to get it fixed and at first, the service advisor told me that there was no fix for it. However, I asked him to have the technician look into it and he recommended replacing the AVN Head Unit per TSB 17-BE-019. Although the advisor initially told me there was no fix, he eventually special ordered the part on 9/3/2019. Unfortunately, they still don't have an ETA for it. It's been over a month now and I still don't have a time display on the head unit. Thank you for listening to my experience!

We have owned three Hyundais, but unfortunately, we were unable to reach 120k miles on any of them. Despite our diligent maintenance, the engine unexpectedly failed. We believe that Hyundai cars are not reliable.

The 2017 Santa Fe that I purchased in 2020 is mechanically sound and equipped with luxurious features that perform exceptionally well. Despite its impressive performance, I have noticed some road and wind noise, which is a common issue with this model. However, the six-cylinder engine provides a quick response, and the gas mileage is in line with expectations based on driving style and conditions. Overall, I am confident in the quality and performance of my Santa Fe. I hope this information is helpful.

Positive 2017 Hyundai Santa fe car reviews

Hello! I wanted to share my experience with the 2017 Santa Fe SE. I noticed that the passenger side wiper was a bit short at 14 inches, which left a small space between the two wipers. Unfortunately, this created a V-shape that interfered with driver and passenger vision in rain or snow. However, I was able to fix the issue by replacing the blade with a 15-inch one. While Hyundai did offer to pay for the new blade, I do think that this is a safety concern that should be addressed. Perhaps it could be considered for a recall on all new Hyundai's that have this issue. Overall, I was a bit disappointed that such a problem wasn't caught and corrected before the SUV hit the market, but I'm glad I was able to find a solution. Thank you for listening!

You have a very capable SUV!

  3. Llewellyn Brown 2024-10-16

This car is fantastic! I have the limited ultimate version and the heated/ventilated front seats are amazing. Even after 6 years of use, it's still going strong. And now that it's available at a cheaper price, I highly recommend it. With only 50K miles, I can't wait to see how it performs at 100K. Overall, it's a great car for the price and I would definitely recommend it!

I'm so glad to hear that you're happy with your vehicle! It's great to know that after almost five years since your purchase, you've only had one issue with the AC and have been able to keep up with regular maintenance services.

  5. Mack Dickinson 2024-09-10

I love the room in the Santa Fe, V-6 engine, gas mileage, comfort, and sharp looks. However, I do not like the info center as it is almost useless, and there is no power passenger seat. Additionally, the way to get into the 3rd row is absolutely laughable! Despite having to put in a new transmission and the driver's seat belt, this vehicle has been very reliable!
