Hummer H3 2008 problems
The Hummer H3 is an off-road vehicle that was produced from 2005 to 2010 by General Motors. The smallest model of the Hummer lineup, it was offered as a 5-door SUV or a 4-door pickup truck known as the H3T. Unlike the larger H1 and H2 models, the H3 was not developed by AM General. It was introduced for the 2006 model year, based on a modified GMT355 that underpinned the Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon compact pickup trucks that were also built at GM's Shreveport Operations in Shreveport, Louisiana and the Port Elizabeth plant in South Africa. While mechanically related to the Colorado and Canyon, GM claims they share only 10% of their components, with the chassis modified and reinforced for heavy off-road duties.
Powertrains
The H3 was launched with a 3.5 liter straight-5 cylinder L52 engine that produced 220 hp (160 kW) and 225 lbf⋅ft (305 N⋅m) of torque and was mated to a standard five-speed Aisin AR5 manual transmission or an optional Hydra-Matic 4L60-E four-speed automatic transmission. In 2007 this engine was replaced by the 3.7 liter LLR that produced 242 hp (180 kW) and 242 lbf⋅ft (328 N⋅m) of torque, figures that were revised in 2009 to 239 hp (178 kW) and 241 lbf⋅ft (327 N⋅m). Under revised EPA testing standards when equipped with either transmission this straight-5 engine achieved 14 mpg‑US (17 L/100 km) in the city and 18 mpg‑US (13 L/100 km) on the highway with a combined average of 15 mpg‑US (16 L/100 km).
Available solely with the 4L60-E automatic transmission, a 5.3 liter LH8 V8 engine producing 300 hp (224 kW) and 320 lbf⋅ft (434 N⋅m) of torque was added in 2008 for the Alpha model. The V8 version had lower fuel economy, estimated at 13 mpg‑US (18 L/100 km) in the city, 16 mpg‑US (15 L/100 km) on the highway, with a combined average of 14 mpg‑US (17 L/100 km).
In 2007, a H3X edition was added. It included the luxury package, 18-inch chrome wheels with unique center caps, chrome trim, chrome tube steps, a body-colored grille and a hard tire cover. The H3X also came with exclusive colors of Sonoma Red Metallic or Desert Orange Metallic.

Common Hummer H3 2008 problems
The Hummer H3, produced between 2006 and 2010, has been known for several common problems that owners have reported. These issues can be categorized into engine, transmission, electrical, and other components.
- Transmission: Transmission problems are also common in the Hummer H3. The automatic transmission is prone to slipping and developing rough shifting conditions, which can lead to complete transmission failure over time .
- Electrical: The electrical system in the Hummer H3 has been known to cause intermittent no-start conditions, particularly when the pass-lock anti-theft system malfunctions . This issue can be resolved by replacing the ignition switch, which requires a key relearn procedure.
- Other components: The Hummer H3 has other common problems, such as cooling system leaks in 3.5-liter 5-cylinder engines, which can develop before the vehicle reaches 100,000 miles . The front wheel bearings can also become noisy and develop available play, particularly in lifted hummers with larger-than-OEM wheels and tires . Additionally, the power steering pump and 3.5-liter 5-cylinder engines are prone to fail at low mileage, and the TPMS sensors are failure-prone . The sunroof drain tubes are also prone to getting clogged, causing rainwater to leak inside the vehicle .
In summary, the Hummer H3 has several common problems that owners have reported, including engine misfires, transmission issues, electrical problems, and other component failures. These issues can be costly to repair and may affect the overall reliability and longevity of the vehicle.
Do Hummer H3 have problems?
Many owners have complained that the valves in their H3's cylinder head started leaking at about 87, 750 miles. Some reported that their engine started to misfire multiple times. Several 2006 Hummer H3 drivers found out that their SUV was burning oil when they brought it to a repair shop.
How long will a 2008 Hummer H3 last?
300,000 to 500,000 miles
If it is properly maintained, a Hummer will typically last 300,000 to 500,000 miles. Many have run over 300,000 miles on their H2s or H3 and are planning to drive the vehicle until the fuel becomes gold.
Do Hummer H3 have transmission problems?
One of the most common Hummer H3 transmission problems is the complete failure of 3rd and/or 4th gear. This happens because one or more of the metal clutch discs inside the 4L60E 3-4 clutch pack can fail prematurely and prevent the transmission from engaging those gears.
Is a Hummer H3 a safe car?
Safety features that come standard include StabiliTrak electronic stability control, antilock brakes (ABS), traction control, frontal and side-impact airbags (torso protection) for the driver and front-seat passenger, and a tire-pressure monitoring system.

STRUCTURE,WHEELS,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-29
- VIN: 5GTEN13E888
- Components: STRUCTURE,WHEELS,ENGINE
- Summary: Engine was replaced at 163,000 miles now at 168,000 miles the frame is rusted beyond repair and is about to give at any moment nothing really left near rear axels. This could have definitely caused a horrible accident to myself or others having a big car just give way and collapse. Took it to mechanic who warned me first then next day took it to body shop that said nothing could be done. Basically both said get rid of it for parts as fast as you can and don’t look back. After the body shop guy actually showed me the rusted out areas i was scared to even drive it like the 10miles back to my house. It sucks after spending all that money on an engine and now having this issue and now having to buy a new car.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-06-28
- VIN: 5gten13e188
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: I was not involved in an incident. The rear frame of this vehicle has rusted 90% away. if it were driven any further the rear axel will fall off. I was towing a boat and it and the axel and rear bumper could have flown off the vehicle. I had no idea the extent of damage. I've owned the vehicle for 11 years. I've read that other Hummer h3 owners have had the axel fall off. Please let other Hummer h3 owners know how severe this can be. Every northern tier state vehicle 2008 and older with 146,400 miles can not have this dangerous of a situation. I've attached a 2011 Buick lacrosse recall of a friend. This truly is a hazard. I had no idea how bad it is.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-06-25
- VIN: 5GTEN63L188
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Vehicle will not crank. After 10-12 minute wait vehicle cranks. According to symbol this is an anti-theft lockdown. But it happens repeatedly for no reason. Has happened 5 times in 6 days. My concern is this could happen during an emergency or in a dangerous place for a woman alone (dark deserted parking lot for instance). For this reason I am very conscious of where I park, but the 1st time it happened, with no warning, was terrifying. From what I have read even replacing the ignition does not solve the issue permanently, the same thing begins to happen again.

IT IS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE, TIME CONSUMING, AND MONEY CONSUMING WHEN I HAVE TO WAIT 10 MINUTES TO TRY TO START MY TRUCK, OR IT DOESN'T START, I HAVE TO REPLACE IT FOR $450+ WHICH I DON'T HAVE TO REPLACE THE IGNITION SWITCH AND IT'S DANGEROUS BECAUSE IF IT DOES LET IT START I HAVE TO BE CAREFUL BECAUSE IT WILL STALL OUT ON ANY GIVEN SECOND CAUSING A CATASTROPHE!!! THERE ARE MULTIPLE PEOPLE WITH THE SAME ISSUES ON THEIR VEHICLES. GM SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE TO DO A RECALL AND FIX THIS PROBLEM.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-11-09
- VIN: 5GTEN13E288
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: RADIATOR HAS A 8 INCH HORIZONTAL HAIR LINE CRACK THAT LETS THE COOLANT LEAK. THE CRACK IS ON TOP RIGHT CORNER( DRIVERS SIDE). THE RADIATOR TOP IS MADE FROM PLASTIC THAT IS PRONE TO CRACKING DUE TO FRAMEWORK BUMPING INTO IT CAUSING STRAIN ON RADIATOR TOP WHICH AFTER TIME CAUSES THE TOP RIGHT CORNER TO ESTABLISH A HAIRLINE CRACK AND CAUSE THE COOLANT TO LEAK. MANY HUMMER H3 VEHICLES OWNERS HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT THIS ISSUE OF HAVING HAIRLINE CRACKS IN TOP RIGHT CORNER. HUMMER HAS REPLACED SEVERAL HUMMER OWNERS RADIATORS AT NO COST, DUE TO A DESIGN FLAW THAT THE TOP RIGHT RADIATOR BUMPS INTO THE FRAMEWORK CAUSING STRESS ON IT AND CRACKING. GM HAS UPDATED THE RADIATOR TO ACCOMMODATE FOR THIS ISSUE, BUT HAS NOT SHOWED INTEREST IN SAYING THAT THIS IS A BIG ISSUE. WHY WOULD THEY ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN TO THOUSANDS OF HUMMER H3 OWNERS IF THEY KNOW THIS IS A DESIGN FLAW WHICH THEY ARE AWARE OF. MY HUMMER H3 ONLY HAS 24,400 MILES IN IT AND STREET DRIVEN ONLY HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN TO SOON.I HAD IT CHECKED BY MY LOCAL GM DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT YOU'RE NOT THE ONLY ONE COMPLAINING ABOUT THIS AND TO CONTACT GM REGARDING THIS ISSUE.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-02-20
- VIN: 5GTEN13L088
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: IT SEEMS THAT THE H3, AND QUITE A FEW OTHER GM CARS OF THIS ERA, HAS A FUEL CUTOFF SWITCH ENABLED BY A SECURITY SYSTEM WHICH READS THE CAR'S KEY. HOWEVER, IT ALSO HAS A HUGE HISTORY OF FAILING TO OPERATE EVEN WHEN THE PROPER KEY IS USED BY THE CAR'S OWNER. THIS REPRESENTS A DANGEROUS FLAW IN THE DESIGN OF THESE CARS, NOT IN THE SENSE THAT IT CAREEN OFF THE ROAD WITHOUT WARNING OR THE LIKE, BUT THAT IT'S ALREADY STRANDED MY WIFE MULTIPLE TIMES IN DANGEROUS CIRCUMSTANCES. THE FIX IS CURRENTLY TO REPLACE, AT A COST OF $300 PLUS, THE IGNITION SWITCH WITH EXACTLY THE SAME PART THAT'S FAILED, WHICH IS TO SAY THAT IT'S MORE THAN LIKELY TO FAIL AGAIN, AS NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE TO RE-ENGINEER THE FAILED SYSTEM. I BELIEVE THAT GM NEEDS TO REALLY FIX THE PROBLEM, RATHER THAN SHRUG THIS OFF AS AN INCONVENIENCE, ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY ARE NOT ONLY APPRISED OF THE PROBLEM (MANY, MANY OWNERS HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS), THEY ARE PLANNING TO RE-INTRODUCE THE BRAND WITH AN ELECTRIC DRIVE TRAIN. THE REPORTING PAGE REQUESTS A SPECIFIC DATE, BUT TODAY IS ONE OF MANY TIMES THIS HAS HAPPENED.

This is such a fun vehicle to own! It handles and runs great. Also, as someone who is over 6 feet tall, I have plenty of room to spare.

Loved my 06 H3 Adventure Package and couldn't pass up to opportunity to move up to a 2008. The improved engine and tranny combo have greatly improved the in town driving experience. I've owned Vettes, a Porsche, muscle cars, an Audi, a Lotus among others and the Hummer is more fun than all of them. Even competes with my GTI as a fun to drive vehicle. GM should keep making Hummers.

Pretty happy so far! It's a bit too early to comment on some things, but I bought and drove back 250 miles home and it was more than pleasant on the highway. The ride was smooth and the Monsoon sound system was fabulous, making it a pleasure to drive home. This will be my wife's car to drive my 2-year-old around, so when mamma is happy, everyone is happy. Sorry enthusiasts, this H3 won't see any more mud than what a local pothole can hold.

I purchased this vehicle for my daughter who is a new driver. We absolutely love it! It rides smoothly and I feel more at ease knowing she is in a safe and sturdy car. Although we initially went to look for a truck, we stumbled upon the Hummer H3 and decided to go for it. We are very pleased with our purchase.

I absolutely love my supercharged Alpha, even after putting 5000 hard miles on it while driving through the challenging trails of the eastern slopes of the Sierra Nevada/Owens Valley/Death Valley region. Despite returning home to a suburb of Los Angeles where my neighbors' shiny clean SUVs never see the dirt, my Hummer H3 still looks and performs amazingly. Its off-road capabilities are truly impressive, and it has never failed to get me home, even after beating it up on horrific trails. I have never experienced any overheating issues while crawling in low range straight up rocky canyons, even with the AC blasting and outside temperatures over 100. The ride is smooth over ruts and washboard at high and low speeds. I made a good investment by having the dealer install the optional skid plate protection. Although the navigation system needs improvement, it's still a great vehicle overall!

I recently purchased a 2008 H3 with only 30k miles on it. Unfortunately, I encountered some issues during my short ownership, such as having to replace the battery for $150 (which turned out to be the third battery the vehicle had gone through) and needing to jump start the SUV four times. Despite these setbacks, I found the H3's appearance to be fantastic. However, I did find the 5 cylinder engine to be underpowered and the gas mileage to be lower than expected at only 14 miles per gallon. Ultimately, I decided to trade it in after just 5 weeks of ownership.

This vehicle has some room for improvement. The front seats could be more comfortable and the fold down rear seats could be flatter. Additionally, the steering wheel could benefit from telescoping to improve the seating position. It's worth noting that dirt, mud, and snow can be thrown onto the door handles from the tires. Overall, there are some areas that could be improved, but it's important to consider personal preferences and priorities when making a purchasing decision.

Firstly, I must say that this car looks absolutely awesome! It's a real head-turner. Although I have had some issues with it since day 3, I must admit that the engine seems more powerful than the regular H3 (which I have had as loaner cars). However, due to the fact that it has been in the service department 4 times in the 6 months that I've owned it, I'm finding it difficult to give a fair rating. The interior is a bit space-challenged, with not much room for anything other than the passengers. It's not very accommodating for backpacks, purses, phones, etc. Also, the visibility is a bit impaired, so it's important to be extra careful when driving, especially when crossing a crosswalk. You can only see directly in front of you, which can be a bit of a challenge when driving in the canyons. Overall, it's a great-looking car with a powerful engine, but it does have some limitations that you should be aware of.
