Hyundai Santa fe 2014 problems
The Hyundai Santa Fe (Korean: 현대 싼타페) is an automobile produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 2000. It is a five-door crossover SUV that either has front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. It is named after the city of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and was introduced for the 2001 model year as Hyundai's first SUV. The Santa Fe was a milestone in the company's restructuring program of the late 1990s because the SUV was a hit with American buyers. Between 2006 and 2012, the Santa Fe was positioned between the smaller Tucson compact crossover and the larger Veracruz.
The third-generation Santa Fe introduced in 2012 was available in two versions, which are regular (short) and extended long-wheelbase version. The short model was sold as the Santa Fe Sport in North America (three-row seating was not available) and simply Santa Fe in global markets (three-row seating was standard or optional), while the extended long-wheelbase model is called the Santa Fe in the US, Santa Fe XL in Canada and called the Hyundai Maxcruz in South Korea. The fifth and current generation was released in 2023 and omits diesel engines in favor of petrol hybrid powertrains.
As of 2022, the Santa Fe is positioned between the smaller Tucson – which the Santa Fe shares platform with – and the larger Palisade in Hyundai's global crossover SUV line-up.

Common Hyundai Santa fe 2014 problems
The Hyundai Santa Fe is a popular midsize SUV, but like all vehicles, it has had its fair share of problems over the years. Here are some of the most common issues reported by owners of the 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe, based on complaints from owners of this car:
- Engine Failure: The most prevalent issue with the 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe is engine failure, with an average cost to fix of $7,500 and an average mileage of 61,000 miles. This issue can be caused by various factors, including bearing failures, which may lead to a recall that replaces the engine for free. However, if the engine failure is not caused by a bearing issue and is out of warranty, the cost of a new engine can exceed $7,000.
- Engine Blown: This issue is also related to the engine, with an average cost to fix of $7,500 and an average mileage of 61,000 miles. The engine can blow due to various reasons, including bearing failures, which can lead to a recall that replaces the engine for free. However, if the engine failure is not caused by a bearing issue and is out of warranty, the cost of a new engine can exceed $7,000.
- Fuel System Issues: Some 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe models have reported fuel system issues, with problems showing up at around 40,000 miles. The fuel pump can overheat and wear out, requiring replacement. Changing out the fuel pump costs around $650, although if the entire fuel sending unit needs to be replaced, it can cost over $1,000.
- Brake Failures: Owners of the 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe have reported brake failures at around 13,000 miles. The brake calipers tend to wear out quickly, requiring replacement of the rotors along with the calipers. Changing out the parts costs around $1,300, depending on local labor rates.
- Crankshaft Position Sensor: The crankshaft position sensor, which reads the crankshaft position or where the engine is positioned, can fail, causing the vehicle to stall randomly or not start at all. The fix for this issue is to replace the sensor.
- Turbocharger Boost Control Actuator: The turbocharger boost control actuator, located right up front, can fail, causing various issues with the vehicle's performance. The fix for this issue is to replace the actuator.
While these issues are common, it is essential to note that not all 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe models will experience these problems. Regular maintenance and timely repairs can help prevent these issues and ensure the vehicle's longevity. Additionally, some recalls have been issued for the 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe, including a recall for engine bearing failures, a high-pressure fuel pump leak, and an ABS module that may short out. Hyundai dealerships will replace parts on all affected models for free.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-25
- VIN: 5XYZU3LB7EG
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: On [XXX}, the abs module failed. I did not know this until it was diagnosed by Pope Automotive, Lubbock, TX on 9/27/24. They discovered there was a recall 205 related to this issue. They started a case with Hyundai in regard to this: #[XXX]. I was in contact with my case worker who told me to have it towed to a Hyundai dealership. I did and it is currently at Gene Messer Hyundai, Lubbock, TX. Messer diagnosed the vehicle and stated the abs module is not related to the recall, because the recall work was done on 2/25/24 in Alabama. I contacted Messer Service Dept and spoke with Victoria. She stated that perhaps only the fuse was replaced, but not the abs. We need a copy of the invoice from Feb 2022, in order to know. I called Carvana, where I purchased the vehicle on [XXX] (only weeks from when the service was done). I was told it has been too long, they don't have the record. Serra Hyundai Trussville, AL said I'd have to get the information from Carvana, they cannot provide it to me. I called Carvana again today. I spoke with a different person and was told it would take 24-48 hours to send me the copy. On this invoice, we will find the abs module was replaced. There is no logical reason for it to go out in just 2.5 years. Perhaps it was a bad part. I feel it is unfair that I am being held responsible for it's replacement. If the abs module was not replaced as part of the 205 recall, I would expect it replaced. There were several model years included in the recall and hundreds of thousands of vehicles affected. There was also a class action lawsuit. There was a period of time where Hyundai parts were not quality or reliable. This has been a very stressful situation requiring many phone calls and research. It should have been a simple solution - replace the defective abs module at no cost to me. I have been without my vehicle now since [XXX]. It is the only transportation for a family of 4. POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-05
- VIN: KM8SN4HF5EU
- Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
- Summary: I have been notified that I am in need of a new engine due to possible complete engine failure which is on the near horizon. I have the Lambda II V6 3.3L engine. It is knocking, making noises, hesitates to go, feels like it will stall out at all speeds, and is scaring me terribly. My certified local mechanic replaced a part for failed emissions, which cost almost $900. However the check engine light came back on. They stated I must go to Hyundai because they did not believe they could fix the car as it required a new engine. I took it to my Hyundai dealer, where my contact stated yes it should be covered as it was having the issues as have been identified with this engine. He later came back and stated his managers would not let him put through the claim, and said my estimate was now a whole new timing system at a cost of $4600. My car has less than 83,000 miles on it. My previous Hyundai is still running at 200,000 miles, so yes, I take good care of my vehicles. This is an early equipment failure on the part of Hyundai and Kia that they are now owning up to. I drive on busy 4 lane local roads, and I am afraid of this engine failure. Also, when I did take my Hyundai into the dealership, they did not have the ABS part needed for the recall. I was told it would be in within a couple of days. I have not been contacted back by them if it is in and to schedule me an appt. This is a huge failure in itself! I did make a claim to Hyundai Customer Care, that stated it was out of warranty. Today, I have my car at a 3rd automotive mechanic in the area to get a 3rd opinion. He has a minor timing issue code P0018 that emissions still kicked out once I finally got it passed. I am waiting to hear what he has to say regarding my engine with no beforehand knowledge of what I know so far. If my car catches fire or breaks down or seizes up on a busy road, I don't think that will go safely at all. I am very concerned for my safety and that of others.
POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-24
- VIN: 5XYZTDLB9EG
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: My 2014 Hyundai Sonata is subject to the recall campaign for the 2.0L and 2.4L Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engines. Since June 24, 2024, the vehicle has exhibited multiple issues: 1. Check Engine Light: The check engine light is continuously on and blinking, signaling that the vehicle is unsafe to drive. Diagnostic codes retrieved include P0140 (O2 Circuit), P0172 (System Too Rich), and P0126 (Knock Sensor Circuit). While the P0126 code pertains to the knock sensor, there has been no definitive diagnosis to determine if the issue is isolated to the sensor or indicative of a deeper engine problem. 2. Engine Power Issue: The car experiences jolts and kicks back during acceleration, along with intermittent lack of power. Furthermore, an independent mechanic performed some tests on the engine, determining that it runs too rich. After the second white smoke through exhaust incident, the vehicle struggles, and often does not reach, 60 MPH; aligning with "Reduced power and/or hesitation" (case #2) in the recall campaign. 3. Exhaust Smoke: On two separate occasions, within a month, white smoke has been observed exiting the exhaust. Engine oil has been below 3/5 empty each time. No oil leak found; must be exiting through exhaust. Despite qualifying for the recall, the Hyundai Colorado Springs dealer has refused to inspect or replace the engine as required. These ongoing issues pose significant safety risks, including the potential for unexpected engine failure and loss of power while driving.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-17
- VIN: 5XYZUDLA0EG
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: On [XXX] I was driving down a busy 4-lane in Los Angeles and my engine suddenly died. There were no warning signs like indicator lights or warning noises. It was traumatic and frightening and I thought I was going to be struck by a car or truck. I had little control over the car-it would not accelerate to get out of the road lane. I was coasting, stopped half toward the side of the road but still sticking out in the road lane and was terrified I'd get hit by another vehicle from my back driver's corner. Cars and trucks that were traveling at normal speed were trying to avoid a collision with me and swerving around me, putting myself and others at risk for serious injury or death. I had had all the systems updated 2 years ago at a HMA, Hyundai dealership as I was directed, which included the KSDS (Knock Sensor Detection System). Dealer said it was to warn me of possible engine noise and issues. I never got any warning. I was NEVER told by anyone including Hyundai or any regulatory agency that the engine could suddenly fail as I'm driving the car OR I WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN DRIVING IT! There were never any warnings at that time or any time that anything was wrong with the vehicle. The car was towed to a Hyundai dealership and they diagnosed the problem on 8/28/2024 as a failed engine bearings clearance test at 63Kmiles. I kept all maintenance records, all done timely and properly with full synthetic oil. The components were assessed by the Hyundai dealership in communication and with guidance through HMA, Hyundai Technical /Techline confirmed failed engine bearings clearance test. My engine was not making any noises beforehand at all, and no engine warning light or sounds gave any warnings to be cautious or do anything other than drive normally. I was told I need an engine replacement. A Prior Approval for the engine replacement was started on 8/28/24 and sent to HMA, Hyundai. 9/17/2024, I still don't have engine replacement, dealer refuses to give records. - Date Of Incident: 2024-07-06
- VIN: 5XYZU3LB8EG
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Engine was replaced in Feb. 2020 as part of the 162 engine recall. Car engine completely shuts down while driving and cannot be restarted for 20 or so minutes. This leaves me stuck in traffic with no ability to move the car. The new engine only has 40,000 miles on it. Dealership first said it was an issue with the engine and valves but when I wanted them to pay, they said the car is fine and passes all inspections. The check oil light and engine light come on when the engine stops, but they are not on prior to the engine stalling. I have made three visits regarding this - 1 to my personal mechanic and two to the Hyundai dealership. I filmed a video of the stall but it is too long to upload.

- Summary: This past Tuesday, July 23, 2024, I started to drive out of my driveway and I heard a very loud knocking noise coming from under the hood. Upon driving the car less than 100 feet the car lost power. It was extremely difficult to get the car back to my driveway. The car was completely impossible to drive and control of my Santa Fe Limited was lost. I had a tow company tow my Santa Fe to the place where I got normal routine service done. Both the tow truck driver and the owner of the auto service business stated the failure was a broken connecting rod or something very similar in the engine. The result was the engine is not able to be repaired and would need to be replaced by a new engine. I purchased the Santa Fe Limited new on May 17, 2024 and I am the only owner. It currently has 72,600 miles on it. I performed all service requirements and changed oil and filter every 5000 miles. Also had my tires rotated and balanced every 5000 miles.

- Summary: Drive side door latch does not open from inside or out. Even after removing inner door panel and manually pulling latch cables the latch remains in the locked position. This is an obvious and major safety issue where the driver is unavailable to exit the vehicle. Other years were recalled for this issue however my 2014 model is not on the recall list for some reason. Even though the very same safety issue with door latch occurs.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-17
- VIN: 5XYZU3LB3EG
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: On [XXX] I purchased a 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport from an auto dealer in Wichita, Kansas. When I bought the car, On [XXX], my car started making a funny noise and the engine light came on and then it quit running and would not restart. I coasted to a back street and then got a ride home. I had it towed home and then purchased a new battery, thinking that might be the issue; but the new battery didn’t start my car. I called my dealership, as my car has a limited warranty on the engine and other parts for 24 months or 24,000 miles. Whichever comes first. At this time, I only had put 8,311 miles on the car; and had only owned it for 8 months. The dealership had my car towed to the mechanic they use. They determined that the engine had locked up. I received a call from the dealer stating they found out there was a recall on the engine through Hyundai; and stated that they have been in contact with a Hyundai dealership to have my car towed there. I contacted the Hyundai dealership and was informed they do not have a loaner car. I was paying for Lyft rides to work and getting rides by family home during this time. I received a call from the Hyundai dealership stating my car had been approved for a new motor to be installed; but it would take 3 to 4 weeks before it is shipped; and they still do not have a loaner car. I then rented a car from Enterprise on 5/11/24 for a week. On 5/15/24 I got a call from the Hyundai dealership stating my car would be ready on 5/16/24. I asked if the motor had been shipped in, and was told yes (which seemed odd since he had said a few days ago that it would take 3 to 4 weeks). I got a call on 5/16/24 that my car was ready. I went in to pick up my car and drove it a couple of days; and oil ran out. Dealership picked it up, supposedly fixed it; and now the oil light keeps coming on. I don't believe I got a new engine; and I am paying a lot of money for a salvage valued car. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

- Summary: 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport 3rd owner with 54,098 miles, all maintenance records. Engine seized without warning on 6/18/2024. Hyundai states VIN is not part of published open recall for similar reason. Prior to Engine failure, Dealership updated the computer after vehicle went into limp home mode (November 2022) and a second auto repair facility replaced the anti-knock sensor under an extended warranty plan after a second Limp Home mode (Spring 2023).
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-01

- Components: STEERING
- Summary: I drive a 2014 Sante Fe Sport. I noticed a clicking noise when turning the steering wheel. Initially, I heard it once in a while. I thought it was a one-time event. The clicking noise is more constant, when making a turn while the car is in motion. Sometimes the steering wheel feels 'loose' or uncontrollable. It seems to be an issue with the steering coupler. It seems as this is a safety concern for me and others while driving.
SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-17
- VIN: KM8SNDHF9EU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
- Summary: My 2014 Santa Fe was scheduled for a Recall 251 ABS Brake Failure-Fire hazard. NHTSA and Hyundai both advised owners of vehicles associated with this recall to park away from structures and recommended the vehicle not to be driven. Hyundai did not have a solution for roughly 6 months. During that time I kept my vehicle parked and away from structures as recommended for that 251 safety concern. I periodically would start the car and let it run to keep it from failing. I went through an entire winter season waiting for a solution a recall. My car just sat. Extreme weather and susceptible to dirt as it sat outside parked. Finally in May 2024 I was informed that Hyundai had a solution and parts were ready for the 251 recall repair. Well the day I was scheduled to bring my vehicle in to be repaired I went out and attempted to start the vehicle but could not. I tried to jump the battery and it still wouldn’t start so I called the dealer and told them that I couldn’t get the vehicle started. They would not provide a tow so I rescheduled the appointment and I called a tow service the next day. Tow came and checked the battery. The battery was fine. They jumped the battery and the vehicle turned on. the vehicle to a local dealer and they repaired the recalls. The vehicle was driven to the dealer that week. My vehicle’s recalls were completed and I picked up the car a week later. All of a sudden when I went to start the car it would not turn over. I stalled in the lane of travel and avoided a collision. I called a private tow again, towed to the same dealer that did the recall. Engine light came on and they were able to determine that the crank position sensor failed as to the reason for stalling and intermittent starting. $600 later they repaired it. I left and the next day my car wouldn’t start again. I associated this with the 251 recall and wear as it sat dormant for too many months. Hyundai refused to provide Goodwill or reimbursement for the crankshaft repair.

- Summary: 1) What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? I tried to park in the parking space next to it by making a slight right turn. As soon as I stepped on the brake to park, the car began to rush forward. I noticed again and again that my foot was slamming on the brakes, but the car didn't stop. My car went over the ledge between the parking lot and the store, slammed into the pillar of the building on the left, smashed all the glass in the dance studio, and hit the wall on the right before coming to a stop. It took six seconds from rushing forward to into the store. 2) How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? I must have been severe injured if the car didn't stop by hitting a right-side wall of the store. And if there were people, I was not able to avoid casualites. 3) Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? No, the car was towed and reviewd by car insurance. Car insurance informed that th e car will be total loss. No information about reproducing the issue 4) Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? No 5) Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No, that was suddenly occured 6) Request: I want NHTSA to investigate my car of sudden unintended acceleration. I would like to get EDR, X-ray of PCB board of electrical central unit(a.k.a ECU) managing brake and accelerator and car manufacturer's reliability sign-off report of the ECU board. I have a security footage taking the accident moment. I failed to upload the video. If you want, please let me know. Will send the video file with NHTSA.

- Summary: I have a 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe. I was notified the ABS module may leak hydraulic fluid on electronics that can cause a fire while driving or parked. This SAFETY issue was found in September 2023. After 7 months a remedy still has not been found. How long is a suitable amount of time to wait for a solution? How long should I need to wait for this to either burn down or get fixed? A remedy has been found for the Santa Fe Sport. Will this same fix, work for my Santa Fe? If it will I am willing to pay for it and wait for reimbursement. The would be better than wondering if my vehicle is going to catch fire while I'm driving down the highway. Any help you can give me will be appreciated. [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

My wife and I recently purchased a 6-seat Santa Fe 2013, which arrived last week. We had considered the sport model but decided to wait for the larger one. So far, we are pleased with the car. The appearance and technology are great. Although we have not had much time to road test it, we encountered a problem with the AC. The passenger side floor was wet after a day on the road with the AC on, and there was also a little water on the driver's side. We are dropping it off at the dealer today, and we are hopeful that they will be able to fix the issue. We are a little concerned about the amount of water in the cab for at least a day, as it could cause rust and mold. I will post an update after we find out what happened.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with the Santa Fe. I got it with a trade-in, and even though I didn't opt for the sunroof, leather interior, rear view camera, gps, etc., I still think the base model is a great deal for the money I spent. Living in my location, I needed an awd, and this vehicle is the best option out there for this price. I checked out other brands like Ford, Nissan, Mazda and Honda, but I would have had to spend an extra 5-10K just to get the same level of comfort/performance. Thanks for listening!

Congratulations on your new purchase! I'm glad to hear that your 2WD V6 with Navi and 3 rows of seats was comfortable and provided great vision with no blind spots during your drive from LV to LA. It's impressive that you were able to achieve 23.7mpg with an average speed of 67mph. The A/C worked great in the 109F desert heat, and the car had no problems going up any of the grades and was able to easily pass. Although it takes a while to learn the Navi system, it's still a great feature to have. The car handles very well and has a compliant suspension, making it easy to handle the curves on the Pasadena fwy at >60mph with some body lean. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

I've owned this vehicle since it was new and I have had few problems with it. I really like its spacious interior and attractive exterior. Although it's getting a bit old, I would hate to part with it because it has been very dependable. Even after 10 years, I'm still pretty happy with my Hyundai Santa Fe. The only issues I've had are that the backup camera stopped working for some reason and the Bluetooth for my phone quit working. Overall, I'm still very happy with my car.

After considering several different SUVs, we ultimately decided on the Sante Fe. It would be a challenge to find another SUV with the same options as the Sante Fe. The passengers in the back also have heated seats that they can control, which is a very nice feature. While the steering is quite sensitive, the advertised mpg is not accurate and the displayed mpg on the dash is also misleading. To get an accurate reading, it's best to do the math yourself by dividing the number of miles driven by the amount of gas used. Unfortunately, we were disappointed to find that Hyundai is still having issues with their mileage. As someone who commutes weekly (120 miles round trip), I average around 22mpg. Despite the issues with the mileage, we still enjoy driving the Sante Fe.

We absolutely loved our new Santa Fe 7 passenger vehicle that we purchased in April. It provided us with great car and towing capacity that perfectly suited our family's needs. However, we did experience some issues with the fuel injector and unfortunately, the car has been in the shop for over 30 days. We are currently in discussions with Hyundai and the BBB to resolve the issue. We understand that the parts needed for the repair are on back order from Korea, but we are hopeful that the repair will be completed soon. Despite the current situation, we remain positive and look forward to enjoying our Santa Fe once it is back on the road.

Within the first three years of ownership, I had to replace two motors due to a recall. Although the warranty covered the motors, it caused me financial hardship and I had to hire an attorney to get some reimbursement. Unfortunately, Hyundai did not provide any financial reimbursement or towing assistance, which put me in a dangerous situation on the California freeway.

The reliability of my new Santa Fe has been a major concern. Despite being a brand new vehicle, it has failed to start on at least 6 occasions and stalls immediately when it does. In fact, during the last incident, it had to be towed and I am currently driving a rental car. As a result, I cannot confidently say that my Santa Fe is a reliable vehicle.

I purchased my Santa Fe Sport 2.0t AWD brand new in January of 2013, as a replacement for my problematic Hyundai Veracruz. Initially, the car was great - it ran smoothly, was comfortable, and made no noise. However, in October 2015, it suddenly died and the entire engine had to be replaced. What started as a small ticking noise soon turned into a much bigger problem. Unfortunately, the dealership had my car for approximately a month. After I got it back, the Turbo went out and had to be replaced, which took another 2 weeks at the dealership. I received the car back again for 7 days, but it died again. This time, the dealership couldn't diagnose the problem, and even a Hyundai engineer couldn't figure it out. However, they somehow managed to get the car running and gave it back to me. Unfortunately, sensor after sensor has failed on the car, and the tail lights have all been replaced due to broken seals. Fuel sensors, door locks, and door handles have also been replaced due to failures. I am currently waiting on a Glove Compartment replacement to come since that has recently failed too. I just noticed today that when I use the front windshield washer, the rear wiper comes on and the front wipers come on while using the rear washer fluid. Despite these issues, the service department has always been helpful and understanding. While I have had some problems with my car, I still believe that Hyundai is a great brand and I would recommend it to others.

We purchased a 2013 Sport 2.0 Turbo in October 2012 and have only put on 4000 miles since then due to the poor steering. Despite having the alignment adjusted, the computer flashed, and a new steering column installed, we still experience the same problem. We filed a claim under the Lemon Law and have been going through the process for 4 months. We are currently going through the BBB auto line before the state. Although we just found out that our claim was rejected, we remain confident in our case. We highly recommend test driving the vehicle on the highway before making a purchase.
