The Hyundai Santa Fe (Korean: 현대 싼타페) is an automobile produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 2000. It is a five-door crossover SUV that either has front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. It is named after the city of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and was introduced for the 2001 model year as Hyundai's first SUV. The Santa Fe was a milestone in the company's restructuring program of the late 1990s because the SUV was a hit with American buyers. Between 2006 and 2012, the Santa Fe was positioned between the smaller Tucson compact crossover and the larger Veracruz.

The third-generation Santa Fe introduced in 2012 was available in two versions, which are regular (short) and extended long-wheelbase version. The short model was sold as the Santa Fe Sport in North America (three-row seating was not available) and simply Santa Fe in global markets (three-row seating was standard or optional), while the extended long-wheelbase model is called the Santa Fe in the US, Santa Fe XL in Canada and called the Hyundai Maxcruz in South Korea. The fifth and current generation was released in 2023 and omits diesel engines in favor of petrol hybrid powertrains.

As of 2022, the Santa Fe is positioned between the smaller Tucson – which the Santa Fe shares platform with – and the larger Palisade in Hyundai's global crossover SUV line-up.

Common 2007 Hyundai Santa fe problems

The Hyundai Santa Fe, a midsize SUV, has gained popularity due to its affordability and wide range of features. However, certain model years, particularly the 2007 Santa Fe, have faced several common problems reported by owners. Here are some of the most frequently mentioned issues:

  • Fuel Gauge Failure: One of the most common problems reported by Hyundai Santa Fe owners is a failed fuel gauge. This issue affects the 2007 and 2008 models, where the fuel gauge fails to provide an accurate reading of the gas in the tank. This can lead to drivers being stranded without fuel. Replacing the gauge entirely is the suggested fix for this problem.
  • Navigation System Sound Failure: For models equipped with navigation systems, drivers have reported that around 50,000 miles, the sound system stops playing any sound, whether it's navigation instructions, music, or phone calls. This issue seems to be easily fixed with a quick reset of the system.
  • Engine Issues: Engine problems are a significant concern for Hyundai Santa Fe owners. In earlier models, like the 2012 and 2013 Santa Fe, many drivers reported engine failure around 80,000 miles, leading to a full engine replacement. Drivers of other model years have reported that their engine stalls or stops without warning, which could lead to dangerous situations.
  • Exterior Paint Issues: Some Hyundai Santa Fe owners have reported excessive paint peeling on their vehicles. Others have noticed minor chipping or flaking. While this issue is not a safety concern, it can be a significant inconvenience and an expensive repair.
  • Crankshaft Position Sensor: The crankshaft position sensor in the Hyundai Santa Fe can cause issues, particularly in the second generation models (2007-2013). This problem can lead to a check engine light and potential runnability issues. Cleaning or replacing the sensor can often resolve the issue .
  • Automatic Transmission: Transmission problems are another common issue in the Hyundai Santa Fe. Drivers have reported issues with the automatic transmission, including slipping, jerking, and difficulty shifting .
  • Fuel Level Sensor P0463: The fuel level sensor P0463 can cause problems in the Hyundai Santa Fe, leading to a check engine light and inaccurate fuel level readings .
  • Alternator: Some Hyundai Santa Fe models have experienced alternator issues, often caused by oil leaks from the valve cover gaskets and 3.3-liter engines. This can lead to premature alternator failure .
  • EGR Valve: The EGR valve can malfunction in the Hyundai Santa Fe, causing the vehicle to lose all acceleration and go into limp mode. This issue is more common in 2010-2012 models equipped with 3.5-liter six-cylinder engines .
  • Wheel Bearings: Some Hyundai Santa Fe models, particularly those with six-cylinder engines, have experienced wheel bearing noise at low mileage, requiring replacement .

These common problems reported by Hyundai Santa Fe owners highlight the importance of understanding the potential issues with a vehicle before making a purchase. Regular maintenance and inspections can help identify and address these problems early, ensuring the safety and reliability of the vehicle.

  • Summary: Yesterday, Dec 15, 2023, I was driving in a local shopping mall and applied my brakes as I was turning into a store's parking lot. My 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe initially slowed upon braking, then suddenly lurched forward, propelling me at least 20 feet forward and past the store parking lot entrance I was attempting to pull into. I was able to get the car to stop by braking hard. I slowly accelerated and was able to pull into another parking lot entrance. If another car or pedestrian had been in front of me they would have been struck by my out of control car. My car had been at a local dealership on Nov 3, 2023, just 5 weeks earlier, for a recall. I've owned the car approximately 8 years and am concerned that this uncontrolled lurching of my car happened 5 weeks after being worked on at the dealership when I had never experienced this problem before. I will contact the dealership about this issue

AIR BAGS,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-15
  • VIN: 5NMSH13E27H
  • Components: AIR BAGS,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
  • Summary: My car has active recalls for the brake switch (prevents brake lights from working properly) and systems related to proper airbag deployment. In addition, there is a service recall (it doesn't show in your database, but it is Hyundai Service Campaign 936 [XXX] ) related to the valve gasket literally dumping oil out to the point that it destroys the alternator - it destroyed my AC Compressor, too! That's not the main point of this, but it's relevant in general. I have been attempting to schedule an appointment to get these issues resolved, but all local dealers tell me the recalls have "expired" and refuse to even look at the car. Some legitimately stop answering the phone when I call at this point, it just rings forever. The online tool to make an appointment from the official Hyundai site has you pick a time to bring the car in, but the dealers to not allot any slots to this so none are available to select. I contacted Hyundai Corporate Customer Service to resolve this, and was told I'd need to "continue trying to work with the dealers." It was no help at all. I am trying to fix the issues myself - my car is currently half-assembled in my garage, and I am technically proficient (I hope!), but it seems ridiculous to be denied service for active safety recalls - and keep in mind, I am only trying to do it myself because the dealers refuse to and I don't want to die in a fiery car crash. I shouldn't be forced to do this. Oh, in addition - Hyundai won't reimburse me for the repairs (I bought my own alternator/compressor once work was refused)... because they aren't being done at a dealership! It'd be hilarious if it wasn't so scummy. Thank you for any help you can offer. I am legitimately losing my mind at this point. 2007 Hyundai Santa fe recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 9 recalls for different components of the 2007 Hyundai Santa fe.

2020-02-04
  • Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor America
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP:CONTROL UNIT/MODULE
  • Summary: Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2007-2010 Elantra and 2009-2011 Elantra Touring vehicles. On February 21, 2020 Hyundai expanded the recall to include 46,425 model year 2007-2008 Entourage and 2007 Santa Fe vehicles. Moisture may enter the Anti-lock Brake (ABS) Module and result in an electrical short.
  • Consequence: An electrical short within the ABS Module may cause an engine compartment fire, even when the car is turned off, increasing the risk of an injury.
  • Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will install a relay in the vehicle's main junction box to prevent the risk of an ABS short-circuit while the car is turned off, free of charge. The recall began April 2, 2020. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 188.
2013-04-01
  • Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor Company
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH
  • Summary: Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2006-2009 Accent, model year 2007-2011 Azera, Sonata and Sante Fe,2006-2011 Tucson, 2009-2011 Elantra Touring, 2007-2010 Elantra, 2008-2011 Veracruz, 2009-2011 Genesis, 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, 2007-2008 Entourage, and 2006-2008 Tiburon vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Hyundai recalled 1,059,824 model year 2007-2009 Accent and Tucson, model year 2007-2010 Elantra, model year 2007-2011 Santa Fe, model year 2008-2009 Veracruz, model year 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, and model year 2011 Sonata vehicles. In September 2013, Hyundai informed the agency that it was adding more vehicles to this campaign, representing an additional 652,512 units. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 1,712,336. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake transmission shift interlock feature, preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.
  • Consequence: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of Park without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. The safety recall began on April 22, 2013. Owners may contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's recall campaign number is 110.
2012-07-25
  • Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor Company
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:SENSOR/CONTROL MODULE-INACTIVE
  • Summary: Hyundai is recalling certain model year 2007 through 2009 Santa Fe vehicles manufactured from April 19, 2006, through July 7, 2008. The occupant classification system (OCS) may need recalibration to accurately detect small statured adults.
  • Consequence: Improper classification or detection may cause the front passenger airbag not to deploy in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury to the front passenger.
  • Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will update the classification software free of charge. The safety recall began on September 7, 2012. Owners may contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151.

I experienced several issues with my Hyundai shortly after the 60,000 mile warranty mark, including rattling in the front end and sway bars, as well as electrical failure. Despite paying thousands of dollars in repair costs for my relatively new car, I was left dissatisfied. After researching further, I discovered that many Hyundai owners experience similar issues right after their warranty ends. As a result, I have decided not to purchase a Hyundai again.

I recently purchased a Hyundai because of their long warranty, but unfortunately, I had some trouble with a vent knob that was supposed to be covered under warranty. Despite having to bring the car to the dealer three times and spending over three hours on the phone with HyundaiUSA, I was having trouble getting them to fulfill their warranty. However, I was able to obtain a part to repair it myself and it only took me 4 minutes and 25 seconds. I hope that HyundaiUSA can improve their customer service in the future and better fulfill their warranty promises.

... at the worst possible time... in the worst possible way. I chose this car mainly on Hyundai's good reputation and was convinced it would be durable. These are important things when choosing a used vehicle. However, 5 months and 6K miles in, the transmission went and cost me 3.5K to fix. Not what I had in mind when I spent $11,5K on it! I've had good ownership experience of VWs, Toyotas and Hondas in the past and while you have to maintain and keep up, none of them let me down, so the Hyundai is on its own. If you're considering it as an alternative to a CRV/RAV4/ Highlander/Pilot/Forester, I would suggest looking elsewhere. If you really must pay $2K for a dealer warranty, it may be worth considering. Thank you for sharing your experience with us, it's always helpful to hear from other car owners.

The driveshaft broke at 134,000 miles, causing the ball joint to detach from the right front wheel and damaging the serpentine belt. As a result, the right front tire fell off. Fortunately, this occurred while I was driving through a parking lot, rather than on the highway where it could have been much more dangerous. Although there is a recall for 2013 driveshaft breaking, Hyundai has yet to acknowledge the issue. It is important to note that this is not an isolated incident and the driveshaft has been known to fail in other cases as well.

Overall, I would definitely say that the car is a winner. Despite owning it for over 10 years, the only mechanical work I have had done is brakes, oil changes, O2 sensor, and fuel gauge. However, the interior quality is its biggest drawback. Unfortunately, both visors broke for no apparent reason and the rear seat fold down has a design flaw that causes crinkled carpet. Additionally, both rear map pockets are missing. If those things are still intact, consider yourself lucky. Despite these issues, I would buy it again 10 times over.

Driving has been great! Your vehicle has enough power to handle all tasks and handles smoothly. It's also comfortable at the wheel.

  3. Wilhelm Hill 2024-10-18

You made a great choice with the SUV! It's wonderful to hear that you're happy with all the features and getting such good mileage. I appreciate your insight on the poor mileage that others have reported, and it's great to hear that the SUV has such great pick up and go. It's also nice to hear that it's easy to get in and out of, and that you have a great view out the window. The safety features are impressive, with 5 air bags, 4 wheel disk brakes, ABS, traction control, tire pressure monitor system, stability control, and automatic rear view mirror night dimming. The steering wheel controls for stereo and cruise control are a great touch, and the dash layout with the blue lights is very stylish. The 18

I recently bought a used car with 30K miles and have driven it for 10K miles in the last 6 months. Overall, I have had a great experience with it, except for the headlights which are a bit too dim. Before and after purchasing the car, I did some research and found out some interesting things. Firstly, only the bigger engine has a timing chain, not a belt. Secondly, the tow package includes a transmission cooler and high-capacity radiator, and the tow bar wraps under the exhaust pipes to protect them. Thirdly, the 18-inch tires provide better handling and road feel than the 16-inch tires. Fourthly, the 3rd row has its own AC controls, which is great for keeping children comfortable. Fifthly, only the AWD version has the nice brushed-aluminum dual-exhaust tips. Lastly, the Santa Fe shares an assembly line with the Sonata, but has its own platform. Let me know if you have any questions!

I've owned my 2007 Santa Fe AWD since 2010 and it has never let me down! I have over 196k miles and it's still going strong. I love my truck. However, I have noticed a possible electrical problem. But all in all, I'm still on the road EVERYDAY. Thank you, Hyundai!
