The Hyundai Santa Fe (Korean: 현대 싼타페) is an automobile produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 2000. It is a five-door crossover SUV that either has front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. It is named after the city of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and was introduced for the 2001 model year as Hyundai's first SUV. The Santa Fe was a milestone in the company's restructuring program of the late 1990s because the SUV was a hit with American buyers. Between 2006 and 2012, the Santa Fe was positioned between the smaller Tucson compact crossover and the larger Veracruz.

The third-generation Santa Fe introduced in 2012 was available in two versions, which are regular (short) and extended long-wheelbase version. The short model was sold as the Santa Fe Sport in North America (three-row seating was not available) and simply Santa Fe in global markets (three-row seating was standard or optional), while the extended long-wheelbase model is called the Santa Fe in the US, Santa Fe XL in Canada and called the Hyundai Maxcruz in South Korea. The fifth and current generation was released in 2023 and omits diesel engines in favor of petrol hybrid powertrains.

As of 2022, the Santa Fe is positioned between the smaller Tucson – which the Santa Fe shares platform with – and the larger Palisade in Hyundai's global crossover SUV line-up.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-03-04
  • VIN: KM8SC13E16U
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: ON MARCH 4, 2020, HEADING HOME AT NIGHT ON A CURVY MOUNTAIN ROAD MY CAR (2006 HYUNDAI SANTA FE) SUDDENLY JERKED, STARTED TO ACCELERATE TO OVER 80 MILES HOUR. AT THE SAME TIME HALF OF THE PANEL LIGHT BEHIND PART OF THE RPM'S AND HALF BEHIND THE MPH WENT OUT; THE REST OF THE PANEL WAS STILL LIT UP; I WAS HEADING DOWN THE CURVY ROAD ACCELERATING HEADING QUICKLY TOWARDS AN 18 WHEELER WHEN I TRIED TO BRAKE, MY BRAKE PEDAL WOULD NOT MOVE AND MY CAR KEPT ACCELERATING (I WAS NOT STEPPING ON THE GAS PEDAL). I QUICKLY DROPPED MY CAR INTO LOW GEAR AND MANEUVERED AROUND THE 18-WHEELER AND TRYING THE BRAKES, THE EMERGENCY BRAKES, AND AS QUICKLY AS IT STARTED UP, IT STOPPED, AND MY CAR STARTED TO DRIVE NORMAL (EXCEPT THE PANEL LIGHTS). ON MY WAY HOME (MARCH 5TH), IT HAPPENED AGAIN WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE CURVY MOUNTAIN ROAD AT NIGHT! AS I BEGIN DESCENDING THE CURVY ROAD (DRIVING 40MPH IN THE RIGHT LANE), MY CAR SUDDENLY BEGAN ACCELERATING AGAIN UP TO 90MPH! THERE WERE NOT AS MANY PEOPLE ON THE ROAD, SO I WAS ABLE TO MANEUVER IT BY DROPPING DOWN INTO LOW GEAR AND AS I BEGAN ASCENDING THE MOUNTAIN ROAD, THE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION STOPPED, AND THE CAR DROVE NORMAL. EACH INCIDENT LASTED ABOUT 5 MINUTES. ON MARCH 6, 2020, I TOOK MY CAR TO THE MECHANIC AND RAN A DIAGNOSTIC AND DID NOT FIND A CAUSE. HE TOLD ME TO CALL THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP TO SEE IF THERE WERE ANY RECALLS. THE DEALERSHIP INFORMED ME TO CONTACT HYUNDAI HEADQUARTERS, WHICH I DID. I REPORTED MY ISSUE AND MADE A CLAIM ON MARCH 6, 2020. I WAS TOLD TO TAKE MY CAR TO CAPITAL HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP AND HYUNDAI HEADQUARTERS WOULD SEND A FORENSIC ENGINEER OUT TO INVESTIGATE THE ISSUE. THEY TOLD ME TO NOT DRIVE MY CAR AND HAVE IT TOWED. I RECEIVED A CALL FROM HYUNDAI HEADQUARTERS INFORMING ME THE DEALERSHIP RAN A DIAGNOSTIC ON MY CAR AND DID NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG AND COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-08-04
  • VIN: KM8SC13E46U
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: MY CAR BEGAN TO SUDDENLY AND AUTOMATICALLY ACCELERATE WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY ON AUGUST 4, 2019. THE SPEED ACCELERATED UP TO ABOUT 80MPH BEFORE BEING ABLE TO GET THE CAR TO SLOW DOWN. THE BRAKES WERE EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO DEPRESS. I HAD TO KEEP MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE PEDAL AND PRESS AS HARD AS I COULD IN ORDER TO KEEP THE CAR FROM ACCELERATING AGAIN. THANK GOD, THERE WERE NO CARS DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF ME OR ON THE SIDE OF MY CAR BECAUSE THIS WOULD HAVE CAUSED A VERY SERIOUS ACCIDENT. I WAS EVENTUALLY ABLE TO PULL OVER ONTO THE SHOULDER, BUT I WAS UNABLE TO COMPLETELY STOP THE CAR FROM MOVING EVEN THOUGH SHIFTING TO PARK. THE CAR WOULD NOT STOP MOVING FORWARD UNTIL I SHUT THE ENGINE OFF, WHICH CAUSED A VERY LOUD NOISE. MY CAR HAD TO BE TOWED TO THE CLOSEST HYUNDAI DEALER. THE SERVICE MAN AT THE DEALERSHIP DIAGNOSED, REPAIRED, INSPECTED AS WELL AS TEST DROVE THE CAR. THE COST FOR REPAIRS WERE CLOSE TO $900.00. NOW, ON THE WAY HOME AFTER PICKING UP MY CAR FROM BEING REPAIRED ON AUGUST 8, 2019, THE SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN. THIS TIME IT WAS ON A CITY STREET WHILE TRAILING MY HUSBAND AT ABOUT 40MPH WHEN MY CAR BEGAN TO ACCELERATE AGAIN. AND AGAIN, THE ONLY WAY TO STOP THE CAR WAS TO PRESS THE BRAKE AS HARD AS I COULD, PUT IT IN PARK AND TURN OFF THE ENGINE. FOR ANYONE TO DRIVE THIS CAR IS VERY UNSAFE AND DANGEROUS. I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE THIS CAR AGAIN EVEN IF IT IS REPAIRED . THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A VERY SERIOUS OR FATAL ACCIDENT. THE CAR WAS TOWED AGAIN TO A HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP NEARBY. I CALLED HYUNDAI HEADQUARTERS CUSTOMER SERVICE TO REPORT THE INCIDENT AND TO FIND OUT IF THERE WERE ANY RECALLS ON MY CAR. I WAS TOLD THAT THERE ARE CURRENTLY NO RECALLS. A CASE MANAGER CALLED ME BACK BUT COULD NOT REALLY HELP. SHE SAID THEY COULD POSSIBLY HELP WITH THE REIMBURSEMENT FOR A CAR RENTAL IF I DECIDED TO RENT A CAR WHILE MY CAR IS BEING REPAIRED.

AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-05-12
  • VIN: KM8SC73E56U
  • Components: AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT REMAINED ON AFTER INITIAL STARTUP DISPLAY. CODE READER INDICATED B1511 CODE, SHORT BETWEEN DRIVER SIDE SEAT BELT BUCKLE AND BATTERY. FURTHER EVALUATION DEMONSTRATED THAT SEAT BELT WARNING LIGHT DID NOT DISPLAY AT ALL, WHETHER BELT WAS BUCKLED OR UNBUCKLED. INTERNET RESEARCH SUGGESTS THAT THIS FAULT MAY PREVENT AIR BAG FROM FUNCTIONING IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENT. TO EVALUATE FURTHER, AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT WAS RESET TO CHECK FOR RECURRENCE. CODE RECURRED. IT WAS NOTED THAT CODE COULD BE PREVENTED AND SEAT BELT WARNING LIGHT WOULD DISPLAY PROPERLY IF THE DRIVER SEAT BELT BUCKLE WAS PRESSED DOWNWARD AND SLIGHTLY TOWARD THE DRIVER. THIS WAS CONSISTENT WITH OBSERVATION THAT FOLLOWING A RESET, AIR BAG LIGHT RECURRED WHEN VEHICLE TURNED LEFT, CAUSING DRIVER TO SHIFT AGAINST BUCKLE. INTERMITTENT FAILURE OF SEAT BELT LIGHT WAS OBSERVED WHILE VEHICLE WAS PARKED AND ALSO MOVING SLOWLY. DRIVER IS UNWILLING TO REMOVE SEAT BELT DURING HIGHWAY DRIVING TO EVALUATE FURTHER. HYUNDAI MOTOR AMERICA HAS DENIED RESPONSIBILITY FOR REPAIR OF THIS SAFETY ISSUE. INTERNET SEARCHES INDICATE THAT THIS IS NOT AN ISOLATED OCCURRENCE, AND FURTHER THAT THERE HAVE BEEN RECALLS ON VEHICLES BUILT ON THE SAME OR SIMILAR PLATFORM.

UNINTENDED ACCELERATION OCCURRED AGAIN, IN THE LATEST INCIDENT WHILE TRAVELING AT 40 MPH ON A CITY STREET, HOWEVER CAR WOULD NOT COME TO A COMPLETE STOP EVEN WITH FULL WEIGHT ON THE BRAKE, AND WHILE SHIFTING INTO NEUTRAL SOLVED THE IMMEDIATE ACCELERATION PROBLEM, THE IGNITION HAD TO BE TURNED OFF TO BRING THE VEHICLE TO A FULL STOP. 2006 Hyundai Santa fe recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 1 recalls for different components of the 2006 Hyundai Santa fe.

2014-07-18
  • Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor Company
  • Components: SUSPENSION:FRONT:SPRINGS:COIL SPRINGS
  • Summary: Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model Year 2001-2006 Santa Fe vehicles manufactured from March 31, 2000, through February 15, 2006, that are registered and operated, or which were originally sold and registered, in the following 20 “salt belt" states and the District of Columbia: Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. The affected vehicles may experience front coil spring corrosion from road salt, causing the coil spring to fracture and make contact with the tire.
  • Consequence: If the front coil spring fractures due to corrosion it could cause the coil spring to make contact with the tire, possibly puncturing the tire and increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
  • Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and if necessary replace the coil spring, free of charge. The recall began on October 24, 2014. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's number for this recall is 124.

Negative 2006 Hyundai Santa fe car reviews

  1. Daryl Thompson 2024-10-05

The claim on the window was 17 mpg in town and 23 mpg on the highway. However, I have yet to reach 17 mpg in either place. This is the second Hyundai I have bought new, and I love both vehicles. It's just that this one has poor mileage.

  2. Deondre Hansen 2024-04-03

I am confident that the issue with the 2006 Santa Fe can be resolved. Despite the key being stuck in the start position and the car smoking from under the dash, hood, and undercarriage, I am certain that a solution can be found. I understand your attachment to the vehicle and will work to ensure that it is repaired to your satisfaction.

Positive 2006 Hyundai Santa fe car reviews

  1. Hiram Kovacek 2024-11-22

We recently purchased this Santa Fe used with only 4500 miles on it. So far, it has been a great ride! We are hoping that all the warranties have transferred because we were very impressed with them.

  2. Jamaal Walsh 2024-11-04

I purchased my Santa Fe in August 2006 and my husband and I have a house in PA where we often travel on weekends and holidays. During our trips, we often notice a caravan of Santa Fe's on the highways and we can't help but feel proud of our choice in SUV. On one trip, we even counted at least ten Santa Fe's on the same highway within a mile, four of which were the same color as mine. I absolutely love my truck and, just like my American Express, I never leave home without it. It's a great SUV that comes at a great price and is incredibly reliable. Best regards, Liz from Queens NY

  3. Hans Schuppe 2024-10-19

The vehicle is comfortable, but the driver leg room is limited. The power seat adjustment seems to be limited, making it hard to stay comfortable on trips longer than an hour. The gas mileage is not great, with 22 hwy with air and city about 16-17. However, the stereo, trip computer, and heated seats are very good. The traction is also very nice, making you feel safe even during rain. The rear cargo area is well designed, and the sun shade works well. The A/C is extremely good and cools the car quickly. The temperature control could be more user-friendly. The acceleration is nice, and the braking is good. Overall, the car is a good value for $20k - $25k. However, if I had to do it all over again, I would probably purchase the Tucson, which has more bells and whistles.

  4. Mario Bernier 2024-10-02

Congratulations on your purchase! It's great to hear that you are enjoying your new 2005 Santa Fe LX. The car seems to have all the features you were looking for, and it's wonderful that it handles so well and has a sporty feel to it. Additionally, the gas mileage is impressive for an SUV. Thank you for sharing your positive experience, and I'm sure your recommendation will be helpful to anyone looking for a mid-sized SUV.

  5. Aurelio Heaney 2024-09-07

I love my new Hyundai Santa Fe! It's perfect for carrying all my school books, my bookbag, posters, and more. Even when I go grocery shopping, there's still plenty of room for all my groceries. When my two Chihuahuas come along for the ride, they fit perfectly in the back and the roll-down shield keeps them safe from the sun. My students are also big fans of my new ride. Thank you, Hyundai, for this totally awesome vehicle!
