The Hyundai Ioniq is a compact five-door liftback manufactured and marketed by Hyundai. The nameplate Ioniq is a portmanteau of ion and unique. It is marketed as the first Hyundai automobile to be offered without a standard internal combustion engine, but rather sold in hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and all-electric variants.

The Ioniq Hybrid debuted in South Korea in January 2016, with all three variants debuting at 2016 Geneva and New York auto shows. The hybrid variant launched in its home market in February 2016, followed by the electric model in July 2016. The plug-in hybrid version followed in February 2017.

From its first model year (2017) through the 2019 model year, the Ioniq Electric had been the EPA's most efficient vehicle with a rated fuel economy of 136 miles per gallon gasoline equivalent (24.8 kWh/100 mi; 15.4 kWh/100 km). The Ioniq Blue Hybrid version has been rated at 4.1 L/100 km (58 mpg‑US), making it the most fuel-efficient hybrid vehicle to be mass-produced.

Following its discontinuation in South Korea in 2021, production of the Ioniq ended in July 2022 in favour of battery electric lineup of Ioniq-badged models starting from the Ioniq 5 hatchback and Ioniq 6 sedan with Ioniq 7 to follow.

I had this same problem when my car was less than a year old with the drive shaft. I have been in contact with corporate Hyundai and the dealer we cannot get a hold of sometimes for a whole week. These engine problems have been a huge issue with Hyundai. The engine will suddenly slow down to 20s being a hazard risk. Dealers when i have tried to get recall wont do recall they say they only have one person who can do it. I have had recalls scheduled months out and then they cancel. The problem i am having directly relates to a closed recall per multiple mechanics. The recall caused oil to leak which is what dealer said happened . Please help!!

The vehicle failed to restart and was towed to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the main power relay assembly had overheated, and the main power relay fuse was blown. The mechanic determined that the main power relay assembly and the fuse needed to be replaced. The mechanic determined that the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V459000 (Hybrid Propulsion System). The vehicle was then towed to the dealer for the recall repair; however, the dealer informed the contact that the recall repair was not necessary, and that the picture of the main power relay part would be sent to the manufacturer. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was opened. The manufacturer contacted the dealer regarding the recall repair. The dealer then informed the contact that the recall repair was performed per the manufacturer's instructions. The contact was later informed by the dealer that the recall repair had not been performed and only the picture of the main power relay part had been sent to the manufacturer. The manufacturer was contacted and informed the contact that they had not received a proof of the service that the dealer had performed on the vehicle. The vehicle was towed back to the independent mechanic, where it was confirmed that the recall repair had not been performed on the vehicle. The mechanic informed the contact that the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V459000 (Hybrid Propulsion System). The vehicle was not repaired. SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Summary: Integrated Brake Accuation Unit failed per dealer repair location. Codes indicated on attached repair invoice receipt. (Document is Uploaded). This was a very expensive repair. Per dealer service advisor and technician they had never seen this before. 2 brake lights on the dash indicated major brake failure. The vehicle was immediately taken to the dealer for repair. See additional details regarding concern, cause. correction, and parts replaced on invoice. If this had not been repaired immediately, this could have put others at risk and caused an accident. Although there are several internet references to brake problems with this model of Hundai Ioniq Hybrid, there are no recalls. The powertrain and engine are warrantied for 100K miles and the batteries have an original lifetime owner warranty. Due to the critical nature of a braking system, I believe braking systems on hybrids for this part should have a lifetime warranty. I want to make it clear that parts that wear out due to use for example brake pads, rotors, master cylinder etc. are not what I am referencing. Since the integrated brake accuation unit is a part commonly seen on hybrid products, I think this a part that warrants investigation and recall. This investigation may go beyond the Hyndai hybrid products. Due to the expense of the repair, I believe this repair could put the owners of all hybrid auto products at risk.

My paperwork from Huntington Hyundai shows that recall 232 was performed. But in 2023 I began plans to move to Canada and to import my Hyundai into Canada. The Canadian registrar of imported vehicles told me that according to recall records, there is an outstanding recall on the vehicle. Recall 232! I learned from visiting a dealer in Buffalo New York that not Huntington Hyundai never applied to Hyundai USA for reimbursement for work performed on recall 232. Huntington Hyundai failed to even perform the recall that they stated they performed.

  • Summary: I have received a couple of notices from Hyundai concerning a recall for my Hyundai. Here’s been my experience—called Motor World Hyundai (150 MotorWorld Dr Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702). I was told that they didn’t have any parts in but would call me when the parts are in. They insisted on getting my contact information and since have barraged me with sales calls, but no information on “the parts”. After a few weeks, my wife called again, they claimed they have no idea when parts will come in, this person did not ask her name, did not offer to check status, did not offer to call back. (by the way, we tried to buy a new Ioniq last year and while they kept asking us to “come in to test drive” (not sure what we were test driving because they said they didn’t have the car) So, no Ioniq purchase. Our next call was to Dickson City Hyundai, (1519 Scranton Carbondale Highway, Scranton, PA 18508). They indicated a lack of parts as well. We requested they order the parts. They indicated that they require that we go there first (about an hour away) to have the car inspected. If they determine that they should order the parts, then they’ll order them and we’ll have to come back to get them installed. So according to the recall letter, the situation is dangerous, we need a recall done, you’ve notified us more than once, but we apparently can’t get it done without a significant effort on our part. A Safety Recall has been issued on your 2017 Ioniq Hybrid/Plug-In Hybrid’s Power Relay Assembly (PRA). Recall 232 Remedy is Available This notice applies to your vehicle, VIN: KMHC05LC7HU030998 I tried to click on “make an appointment” and it goes to “Page can’t be found” So, I was so happy with my Hyundai I was going to buy another, no test drive, no shopping for other brands but no can do. Now I’m told that I need a recall, but no one is interested in doing it.

THERE WAS NO SHOULDER AVAILABLE, JUST CONTINUOUS CONCRETE JERSEY RAIL, AND NO OPENING ON MY RIGHT TO GO TO. ALTHOUGH I SLAMMED ON MY BRAKES AND PRESSED THEM AS HARD AS POSSIBLE, MY 2017 HYUNDAI IONIC HYBRID CAR DID NOT STOP, ITS AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY, THE SEAT BELT DID NOT LOCK LEAVING ENOUGH SLACK THAT MY CHIN AND CHEST SLAMMED INTO STEERING WHEEL AS I RAN INTO REAR OF THE STOPPED SUV CAUSING HIM TO RUN INTO SUV IN FRONT OF HIM. THEIR AIRBAGS DEPLOYED, MINE DID NOT. ALTHOUGH THE FAULT WAS ENTIRELY MINE IN TERMS OF STRIKING THE FIRST CAR, I DIDN'T UNDERSTAND WHY MY IONIQ DIDN'T STOP BETTER OR WHY MY AIRBAG DIDN'T PREVENT ME FROM STRIKING THE STEERING WHEEL. I DID TELL THE HIGHWAY PATROL OFFICER THAT I HAD STRUCK MY CHEST AND CHIN QUITE HARD ON THE STEERING WHEEL, BUT HAD NO EXTERNAL INJURIES. THE UPSET AND REGRET OVER THE INCIDENT WAS ENOUGH TO PUT THOSE QUESTIONS OUT OF MY MIND FOR THE LAST TWO DAYS, UNTIL TODAY FRIDAY 6/21/19 WHEN I WENT TO THE AUTO COLLISION REPAIR CENTER AND SPOKE TO THE MANAGER. THEY REFUSED TO RESPOND TO US AND SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT. NEVERTHELESS, WE STILL VISITED PHYSICALLY IN PERSON ON 3/16. AFTER KEEPING OUR CAR FOR NEARLY 8 HOURS THEY CLAIMED NO TECHNICIAN WAS AVAILABLE TO REPAIR OUR CAR THAT DAY! FORTUNATELY, I WAS ABLE TO STOP BEFORE HITTING THE INTERIOR BACK WALL. THE SECOND TIME, I WAS IN A PARKING LOT DROPPING MY NIECE OFF AT A SCHOOL FUNCTION. I PUT THE CAR IN PARK WHILE SHE JUMPED OUT, PLACED IT IN DRIVE TO PULL AWAY, AND IT ACCELERATED QUICKLY TOWARDS ANOTHER CAR. I APPLIED THE BRAKE AND THE CAR STOPPED BUT MADE LOUD SOUNDS LIKE I HAD SKIDDED TO A STOP. IT STARTLED AND CAUGHT THE ATTENTION OF TWO ADULTS IN THE PARKING LOT.   • Components: HYBRID PROPULSION SYSTEM: INVERTER
  • Summary: Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2017-2018 Ioniq HEV and Ionic PHV vehicles previously recalled under recall number 18V-704. The Power Relay Assembly (PRA) located underneath the rear seat may overheat.
  • Consequence: An overheated PRA increases the risk of a fire.
  • Remedy: Dealers will inspect and replace the main relay or PRA, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed August 23, 2022. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 232. This recall replaces NHTSA recall number 18V-704. Vehicles already repaired under the previous recall will need to have the new remedy completed.

  • Consequence: The increased electrical resistance can overheat the rear seat which is above the PRA, increasing the risk of a fire.
  • Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the Power Relay Assembly (PRA) for damage. If no damage is found, the main relay will be replaced. If damage is found, the PRA will be replaced. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began February 28, 2019. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 178.

  • Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the HCA caps for leaked oil and replace the HCA assembly if needed, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin June 20, 2018.     I purchased a 2017 Ioniq, the first one sold in New Mexico. Unfortunately, after two years, the car stopped working and has been in and out of the shop for over four months. Despite replacing everything, the issue remains unresolved. While this has been a frustrating experience, I have been working with a case manager from the national office who has been helpful in paying for my rental. Although the car was in the shop for almost a month, I was able to drive it to dinner and back without any issues. While I understand the concerns about safety, I am confident that the issue will be resolved soon. I appreciate Hyundai's efforts to address the issue and value their commitment to customer satisfaction. While this has been a challenging experience, I remain optimistic that the car will be fully operational soon. Thank you for your understanding.

    I had a 2017 limited hybrid and was initially impressed with the features and value for money. Unfortunately, shortly after driving it home, I experienced a terrifying incident on the interstate when the car nearly died. The vehicle remained in the shop for the first five months of ownership, and I had the opportunity to drive every Hyundai loaner in my area. However, I was grateful for the great warranty that came with the car. The ride was decent, and the fit and finish were good, although I did notice where cuts had been made for production. The entertainment system's head unit was fantastic, but the standard speakers were terrible. Unfortunately, the car had a significant number of mechanical issues, and although Hyundai offered to buy it back, I declined, hoping that the problems could be resolved. However, even after the problem was All of the problems were well known on the American Facebook forum for the Ioniq, so I know it wasn’t just mine. Multiple people on the forum had some of the same issues. I hope they have worked out the kinks because the idea of the Ioniq is great. Unfortunately, the follow-through was less than desirable, which is why I traded it for another vehicle.

    I was really interested in this car because of its good gas mileage and reasonable price. I was blown away by the value it offers. It has all the modern bells and whistles and drives great. I was pleasantly surprised by how much pep it has. The amount of interior and trunk space is amazing, especially considering its efficiency. Hyundai is really stepping up their game and looking to compete. I've already driven about 450 miles and according to the dashboard, I still have more than 200 miles left before I need to fill up the tank. It says I am averaging over 60 mpg and I think it is correct. I just can't get over the value, I'm really happy with my purchase so far!

    I've been driving a used 2005 Honda CR-V for the past six years. When it finally crossed the 240,000 mile mark, I wanted to upgrade my car. I no longer needed a big car since I'm usually the only person in my car, but I wanted a car that has a hatchback since I frequently have a lot of gear in my car. I was also looking for a car that would get at least double the poor mileage I was getting in my CR-V. After considering a few options, I discovered the Ioniq and fell in love with it. The acceleration was smooth and the ride quality was so much quieter than my CR-V. I was impressed at the fact that I could get up to 55 mpg in the limited trim, which was the trim I wanted since it had leather seats and a host of safety features. I was able to secure a great deal on the car with 0% financing for 5 years. I've had the car for almost a month now and since I drive a lot for work, I'm about to hit 1,000 miles. I've had absolutely no problems with the car so far. One thing I love is the fact that the AC can be on full blast when the gasoline engine is off - it's a dream when I'm sitting in traffic during a hot summer day knowing that I don't need to choose between sweating or getting good MPG. I can honestly say my driving has also gotten a lot better because I drive more economically to get the best fuel economy possible, so I feel more relaxed behind the wheel. I'm also thrilled with the safety features like blind spot monitoring and the rear view camera, to name a few. They've been a huge upgrade for me from a 2005 car.I bought the ultimate package with the limited trim which includes smart cruise, HID headlights with light bending technology, automatic braking and a premium infinity stereo with clarifi technology (to restore sound quality on radio stations), among other things. The headlights are very useful at night and actually bend with you when you're turning on a windy road - the visibility is fantastic. I'm also a huge audiophile and with a little tweak of the bass/treble settings on the stereo system, I'm very impressed with the sound quality of the Infinity Stereo system. It's much better than any stereo I've heard in any other sedan. I use Apple CarPlay on a daily basis as well which eliminates the need for me to be fumbling with my phone while I'm driving. No longer do I need to worry about texting and driving. With Apple CarPlay, you can text anyone with Siri and ask Siri to get you directions to anywhere using Apple Maps, another huge plus. Finally, I've been averaging around 52 MPG and am projected to go 600 miles on one tank of gas; coming from a Honda CR-V that barely made it to 230 MPG, this is a dream for me. If you're in the market for a Hybrid and you're not a fan of the Prius, the Ioniq just might be the car for you.

The safety features are incredible, especially the smart cruise control! It's almost like the car drives itself when in this mode. You can set it to stay 3 car lengths behind a car and if the car in front of you goes slower than what you set it for, it will automatically slow down and speed up. Even if you don't need warranty work, you'll be pleasantly greeted and treated with respect at any Hyundai dealership. Hyundai is committed to delivering a warranty that surpasses the likes of Toyota, who rely heavily on past reputation rather than current manufacturing. In addition to the warranty, Hyundai builds solid, reliable, and well-performing cars at unbeatable prices. It's no wonder why Toyota and Honda can't seem to match Hyundai's features for similar pricing. As a proud owner of nine Hyundais over the last 20 years, I can attest to their quality and reliability. I have never had a transmission problem, electrical problem, or any other issue with any of my Hyundais. My Ioniq, which I have owned for less than two months, has already been driven nearly 3,000 miles under a variety of conditions, and it works perfectly. Thanks to the hybrid system, the air conditioning keeps working at full power even when the engine is stopped in traffic, making for a comfortable ride. You can control the acceleration to suit your needs, whether you're trying to be eco-friendly or in a hurry.On the other hand, when you switch to 'Sport Mode', the car transforms into a completely different beast! It takes off quickly and accelerates briskly up to 45-50 mph in city traffic! In normal drive mode, the car operates in full EV mode up to 50 mph, and stoplight driving is where this car really shines! It can easily push mpg figures UP during city driving! Imagine sitting at a stoplight with the AC keeping you super-cooled, noting your 'mpg' number is static because there is no gasoline being used! A quick acceleration to 45 mph, relax, and now the car is running purely on battery all the way to the next light! Let off and coast and the car goes into regeneration to recover energy that would otherwise have been lost. Additionally, the Internal combustion engine (ICE) uses the Atkinson cycle which makes it 40% thermally efficient - about 40% more efficient than a standard ICE that lacks a motor for down low torque assist. The Ioniq is a great looking, 'small' car that is about twice as big on the inside as it looks. Even the 'Blue' model is nicely equipped and once 'the new wears off' the Blue is the model to own! What's not mentioned in advertisements is that with Apple Car Play, you no longer need an expensive, static, on-board navigation system. Upon connecting your iPhone with a USB/charging cable, the maps function with full turn-by-turn voice navigation is right there! The car is large enough inside to accommodate a rather large driver, plus three people seated across the back. It has a nice, open, airy feel inside. I really like the hatchback feature because with the seats folded, it can hold an amazing amount of stuff! Even with the seats up, my wife was surprised at how many bags of groceries easily fit in the 'trunk'. Operationally speaking, you get in the car, push the start button and all you hear is a chime as the instrument lights come to life.Driving at speeds below 20 mph is almost always on motor alone, unless it's a cold morning and the ICE is running to warm the battery pack. Speaking of battery packs, Hyundai has made a smart move by replacing the super-heavy, totally inefficient 12V accessory battery with a tiny 12V LiION accessory battery that can be 'jumped' from the traction battery if it ever goes flat. Due to the dual clutch, 6-speed automatic transmission, the car feels just like any other car during normal driving. One thing that's a little different is that it doesn't downshift when adding throttle unless the cruise is engaged, or perhaps one is really pushing down on the pedal. The car has been averaging 55 mpg based on actual, calculated mpg at fill-up, but of course, it will record 'trip' mpg well into the 70-80 mpg range once running warm and properly driven. For the price, warranty, and value, it's an excellent buy!

    My first impression of this car was very positive. As a loyal Toyota customer for years, I have found their styling to be less than appealing, and the Prius is also significantly more expensive. However, this car has exceeded my expectations and surpassed Toyota at their own game. It comes with many standard features such as keyless ignition, satellite radio, and fantastic mileage that actually beats the Toyota Prius, with 57mpg City and 59mpg Highway. After months of searching, I found a 2017 certified ionic blue model for an amazing price at Superior Hyundai Conway. The dealership was straightforward and treated me very well, with no pressure. I would highly recommend this dealer to anyone. So far, on my first tank, I have averaged 63 miles per gallon, and as a previous, previous, previous owner, I am extremely satisfied.
