2017 Hyundai Ioniq hybrid problems

hyundai logo

The Hyundai Ioniq is a compact five-door liftback manufactured and marketed by Hyundai. The nameplate Ioniq is a portmanteau of ion and unique. It is marketed as the first Hyundai automobile to be offered without a standard internal combustion engine, but rather sold in hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and all-electric variants.

The Ioniq Hybrid debuted in South Korea in January 2016, with all three variants debuting at 2016 Geneva and New York auto shows. The hybrid variant launched in its home market in February 2016, followed by the electric model in July 2016. The plug-in hybrid version followed in February 2017.

From its first model year (2017) through the 2019 model year, the Ioniq Electric had been the EPA's most efficient vehicle with a rated fuel economy of 136 miles per gallon gasoline equivalent (24.8 kWh/100 mi; 15.4 kWh/100 km). The Ioniq Blue Hybrid version has been rated at 4.1 L/100 km (58 mpg‑US), making it the most fuel-efficient hybrid vehicle to be mass-produced.

Following its discontinuation in South Korea in 2021, production of the Ioniq ended in July 2022 in favour of battery electric lineup of Ioniq-badged models starting from the Ioniq 5 hatchback and Ioniq 6 sedan with Ioniq 7 to follow.

  • Engine Performance:
    • Reports indicate that the vehicle hesitates, shudders, and jerks while the gas engine is engaged, potentially affecting the overall performance and driving experience of the car.
  • Coolant Leak:
    • Early models built between October 2016 and March 2017 have been subject to a recall due to coolant leaks into the electric power control unit, which could pose a risk to the vehicle's operation.
  • Power Relay Fire Risk:
    • Some examples of the 2017 Ioniq Hybrid may suffer from a faulty power relay that could lead to a fire in extreme circumstances, necessitating replacement of the power relay and inspection of related components for damage.

HYBRID PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-25
  • VIN: KMHC65LC2HU
  • Components: HYBRID PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid. The contact stated while driving 20 MPH, the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle lurched forward and then stalled. The contact was able to pull over to the side of the road. The vehicle failed to restart and was towed to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the main power relay assembly had overheated, and the main power relay fuse was blown. The mechanic determined that the main power relay assembly and the fuse needed to be replaced. The mechanic determined that the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V459000 (Hybrid Propulsion System). The vehicle was then towed to the dealer for the recall repair; however, the dealer informed the contact that the recall repair was not necessary, and that the picture of the main power relay part would be sent to the manufacturer. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was opened. The manufacturer contacted the dealer regarding the recall repair. The dealer then informed the contact that the recall repair was performed per the manufacturer's instructions. The contact was later informed by the dealer that the recall repair had not been performed and only the picture of the main power relay part had been sent to the manufacturer. The manufacturer was contacted and informed the contact that they had not received a proof of the service that the dealer had performed on the vehicle. The vehicle was towed back to the independent mechanic, where it was confirmed that the recall repair had not been performed on the vehicle. The mechanic informed the contact that the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V459000 (Hybrid Propulsion System). The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 140,000. Parts distribution disconnect.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-23
  • VIN: KMHC85LC2HU
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Integrated Brake Accuation Unit failed per dealer repair location. Codes indicated on attached repair invoice receipt. (Document is Uploaded). This was a very expensive repair. Per dealer service advisor and technician they had never seen this before. 2 brake lights on the dash indicated major brake failure. The vehicle was immediately taken to the dealer for repair. See additional details regarding concern, cause. correction, and parts replaced on invoice. If this had not been repaired immediately, this could have put others at risk and caused an accident. Although there are several internet references to brake problems with this model of Hundai Ioniq Hybrid, there are no recalls. The powertrain and engine are warrantied for 100K miles and the batteries have an original lifetime owner warranty. Due to the critical nature of a braking system, I believe braking systems on hybrids for this part should have a lifetime warranty. I want to make it clear that parts that wear out due to use for example brake pads, rotors, master cylinder etc. are not what I am referencing. Since the integrated brake accuation unit is a part commonly seen on hybrid products, I think this a part that warrants investigation and recall. This investigation may go beyond the Hyndai hybrid products. Due to the expense of the repair, I believe this repair could put the owners of all hybrid auto products at risk.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-11-18
  • VIN: KMHC75LC0HU
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I brought my Hyundai on November 18, 2022 to Huntington Hyundai at 1221 E. Jericho Tpke., for service to take care of a recall. My paperwork from Huntington Hyundai shows that recall 232 was performed. But in 2023 I began plans to move to Canada and to import my Hyundai into Canada. The Canadian registrar of imported vehicles told me that according to recall records, there is an outstanding recall on the vehicle. Recall 232! I learned from visiting a dealer in Buffalo New York that not Huntington Hyundai never applied to Hyundai USA for reimbursement for work performed on recall 232. Huntington Hyundai failed to even perform the recall that they stated they performed.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-02
  • VIN: KMHC05LC7HU
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I have received a couple of notices from Hyundai concerning a recall for my Hyundai. Here’s been my experience—called Motor World Hyundai (150 MotorWorld Dr Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702). I was told that they didn’t have any parts in but would call me when the parts are in. They insisted on getting my contact information and since have barraged me with sales calls, but no information on “the parts”. After a few weeks, my wife called again, they claimed they have no idea when parts will come in, this person did not ask her name, did not offer to check status, did not offer to call back. (by the way, we tried to buy a new Ioniq last year and while they kept asking us to “come in to test drive” (not sure what we were test driving because they said they didn’t have the car) So, no Ioniq purchase. Our next call was to Dickson City Hyundai, (1519 Scranton Carbondale Highway, Scranton, PA 18508). They indicated a lack of parts as well. We requested they order the parts. They indicated that they require that we go there first (about an hour away) to have the car inspected. If they determine that they should order the parts, then they’ll order them and we’ll have to come back to get them installed. So according to the recall letter, the situation is dangerous, we need a recall done, you’ve notified us more than once, but we apparently can’t get it done without a significant effort on our part. A Safety Recall has been issued on your 2017 Ioniq Hybrid/Plug-In Hybrid’s Power Relay Assembly (PRA). Recall 232 Remedy is Available This notice applies to your vehicle, VIN: KMHC05LC7HU030998 I tried to click on “make an appointment” and it goes to “Page can’t be found” So, I was so happy with my Hyundai I was going to buy another, no test drive, no shopping for other brands but no can do. Now I’m told that I need a recall, but no one is interested in doing it.

AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-06-19
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: KMHC65LC2HU
  • Components: AIR BAGS,SEAT BELTS,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: DRIVING ON THE NORTHBOUND 3-LANE SECTION OF I-75, I MOVED FROM CENTER LANE WHERE I WAS BEHIND A HUGE SEMI TRUCK THAT BLOCKED VISION AHEAD, SO I MOVED INTO THE LEFT LANE WHEN ALL TRAFFIC HAD PASSED AND IT WAS CLEAR. THEN IMMEDIATELY AHEAD AT APPROXIMATELY 5 CAR LENGTHS FROM ME IN LEFT LANE, A LARGE SUV HAD STOPPED DEAD IN THAT LEFT LANE OF INTERSTATE ALONG WITH OTHER VEHICLES AHEAD OF HIM. THERE WAS NO SHOULDER AVAILABLE, JUST CONTINUOUS CONCRETE JERSEY RAIL, AND NO OPENING ON MY RIGHT TO GO TO. ALTHOUGH I SLAMMED ON MY BRAKES AND PRESSED THEM AS HARD AS POSSIBLE, MY 2017 HYUNDAI IONIC HYBRID CAR DID NOT STOP, ITS AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY, THE SEAT BELT DID NOT LOCK LEAVING ENOUGH SLACK THAT MY CHIN AND CHEST SLAMMED INTO STEERING WHEEL AS I RAN INTO REAR OF THE STOPPED SUV CAUSING HIM TO RUN INTO SUV IN FRONT OF HIM. THEIR AIRBAGS DEPLOYED, MINE DID NOT. ALTHOUGH THE FAULT WAS ENTIRELY MINE IN TERMS OF STRIKING THE FIRST CAR, I DIDN'T UNDERSTAND WHY MY IONIQ DIDN'T STOP BETTER OR WHY MY AIRBAG DIDN'T PREVENT ME FROM STRIKING THE STEERING WHEEL. I DID TELL THE HIGHWAY PATROL OFFICER THAT I HAD STRUCK MY CHEST AND CHIN QUITE HARD ON THE STEERING WHEEL, BUT HAD NO EXTERNAL INJURIES. THE UPSET AND REGRET OVER THE INCIDENT WAS ENOUGH TO PUT THOSE QUESTIONS OUT OF MY MIND FOR THE LAST TWO DAYS, UNTIL TODAY FRIDAY 6/21/19 WHEN I WENT TO THE AUTO COLLISION REPAIR CENTER AND SPOKE TO THE MANAGER. HE TOLD ME THAT I SHOULD REPORT THE SITUATION WITH THE SEAT BELT, AIRBAG AND ABS BRAKES NOT PERFORMING AS THEY SHOULD, AND MAKE HYUNDAI AWARE OF IT AS WELL, AND HE PROVIDED ME THE NHTSA INFORMATION. I ALSO TEXTED THE SERVICE MANAGER AT THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP WHERE I LEASED THIS VEHICLE TO ADVISE HIM OF WHAT HAPPENED. HE HAS NOT YET RESPONDED. THUS THIS REPORT.

TODAY (4/7/19), UPON DRIVING IT, THE CAR'S CABIN FILLED WITH SMOKE THAT WAS COMING FROM THE REAR SEAT. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED OVER, SHUT THE CAR OFF, REMOVED AS MUCH ITEMS FROM THE CAR AS POSSIBLE AND CALLED MY WIFE, 2 MILES DOWN THE ROAD AT HOME TO BRING A FIRE EXTINGUISHER. UPON HER ARRIVING ROUGHLY 5 MINS LATER, FLAMES BEGAN EMERGING FROM THE BACKSEAT, WHICH I QUICKLY EXTINGUISHED AND PROCEEDED TO CALL 9-1-1. UPON THE POLICE AND FIRE DEPARTMENT ARRIVING, FLAMES WERE STILL EMERGING AND STILL SMOKING UNTIL THEY WERE ABLE TO DOUSE IT WITH WATER, FLAME RETARDANT, AND ALSO DISCONNECT THE BATTERIES TO PREVENT FUTURE DAMAGE. THE CAR WAS EVENTUALLY TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP AND NOW AWAITING.

  • Summary: WE RECEIVED A RECALL LETTER IN THE MAIL (A NOTICE, THEN AN INSTRUCTION TO FIX, APPROXIMATELY 3 MONTHS APART) REGARDING AN ELECTRICAL CONNECTION UNDER THE REAR SEAT. THIS FAULT MAY LEAD TO FIRES AND WE WERE TOLD TO CONTACT ANY FACILITY IMMEDIATELY TO SCHEDULE A REPAIR THAT WOULD TAKE LESS THAN 30 MINUTES. AT LEAST 5 TIMES ACROSS MULTIPLE DAYS AND THROUGH MULTIPLE TECHNOLOGIES, WE CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP AT 4960 NORTH, FL-7, COCONUT CREEK, FL 33073 (COCOUNUT CREEK HYUNDAI) WHERE WE ORIGINALLY PURCHASED THE CAR. THEY REFUSED TO RESPOND TO US AND SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT. NEVERTHELESS, WE STILL VISITED PHYSICALLY IN PERSON ON 3/16. AFTER KEEPING OUR CAR FOR NEARLY 8 HOURS THEY CLAIMED NO TECHNICIAN WAS AVAILABLE TO REPAIR OUR CAR THAT DAY! THEY NEVER AGREED TO SCHEDULE THE LEGALLY REQUIRED REPAIRS AS WE REQUESTED MANY TIMES IN ADVANCE AND EVEN HELD OUR CAR HOSTAGE AND REFUSED TO REPAIR IT! THEY HAVE VIOLATED THE LAW AND PUT OUR LIVES AT RISK. THEY MUST BE PUNISHED AND WE MUST BE COMPENSATED FOR THIS BARBARIC TREATMENT AT THE HANDS OF HYUNDAI. OUR CAR IS STILL AT RISK OF EXPLOSION AND HYUNDAI REFUSES TO FIX IT.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-10-13
  • VIN: KMHC65LC2HU
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: DUE TO SEVERE FRONT WINDSHIELD GLARE, I AM UNABLE TO CLEARLY SEE APPROACHING TRAFFIC, VEHICLES PREPARING TO TURN LEFT/RIGHT AT INTERSECTIONS, AND PEDESTRIANS STANDING ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD OR IN A CROSS WALK.ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS, I HAVE HAD TO STOP THE CAR QUICKLY TO AVOID COLLISION WITH ONCOMING VEHICLES AND PEDESTRIANS.THIS HAZARD IS PRESENT UNDER BOTH SUNNY AND CLOUDY ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS (PHOTOS ATTACHED).THE ONGOING OCCURRENCE OF EXTREME GLARE ON THE WINDSHIELD APPEARS TO EMANATE FROM THE LIGHT COLORED DASHBOARD AND PRESENTS A DANGEROUS SAFETY HAZARD WHILE THE CAR IS IN MOTION AS WELL AS WHEN STOPPED AT AN INTERSECTION. TO DATE, I HAVE REPORTED THIS ISSUE TO: 1) ON 10/13/17 AND 10/19/17 TO HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP: JEFF REEB, GENERAL MANAGER, FRED BEANS HYUNDAI-GENESIS, DOYLESTOWN, PA 18902, (215) 345-8200. I WAS INFORMED THAT THIS ISSUE WAS NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY SINCE IT WAS NOT A MANUFACTURING DEFECT AND I WOULD HAVE TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM AT MY OWN EXPENSE. 2) ON 10/30/17 TO HYUNDAI MOTOR AMERICA: OMAR, REGIONAL CONSUMER AFFAIRS, (714) 887-2537, HYUNDAI MOTOR AMERICA. I RECEIVED A WRITTEN DETERMINATION LETTER INDICATING THE HYUNDAI DENIED MY CLAIM #10724458. PER THAT DETERMINATION LETTER AND MY RIGHTS TO CONTEST THAT DETERMINATION, I PROVIDED THEM A DEALER INVOICE DOCUMENTING EXTREME GLARE, PHOTOS OF EXTREME GLARE, AS WELL AS THE ADDRESS OF ONE OF THE MANY WEBSITES/BLOGS REPORTING GLARE ON HYUNDAI VEHICLES. AGAIN, IN APRIL, 2018, I RECEIVED A VERBAL FINAL DETERMINATION THAT HYUNDAI WILL TAKE NO CORRECTIVE ACTION TO REMEDY THIS SAFETY HAZARD. I DO NOT FEEL SAFE OPERATING THIS VEHICLE. IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT HYUNDAI TAKE CORRECTIVE ACTIONS IMMEDIATELY FOR MY VEHICLE, AS WELL AS CORRECT THIS DESIGN FLAW BEFORE HUMAN INJURIES AND/OR FATALITIES OCCUR. I WOULD BE HAPPY TO PROVIDE MORE DETAIL, AS NEEDED. THANK YOU.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-06-05
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: KMHC75LC0HU
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: I ACCIDENTALLY BACKED INTO A CONCRETE BARRIER PULLING OUT OF A PARKING SPOT. I PUT THE CAR IN DRIVE, INTENDED TO PULL BACK INTO MY SPOT, TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE BRAKE AND THE CAR ACCELERATED SO QUICKLY THAT I CRASHED INTO A FORD TRUCK 2-3' IN FRONT OF ME. THE ACCELERATION WAS SO QUICK, AND THE IMPACT SO STRONG, I FELT LIKE I WAS IN A ROCKET SHIP AND MY LICENSE PLATE WAS IMPALED ON THE TRUCK. THIS WAS THE THIRD TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED SINCE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE IN OCTOBER 2017. THE FIRST TIME, I WAS PARKING IN MY GARAGE. I WAS SLOWLY MOVING MY WAY IN WHEN THE CAR ACCELERATED. FORTUNATELY, I WAS ABLE TO STOP BEFORE HITTING THE INTERIOR BACK WALL. THE SECOND TIME, I WAS IN A PARKING LOT DROPPING MY NIECE OFF AT A SCHOOL FUNCTION. I PUT THE CAR IN PARK WHILE SHE JUMPED OUT, PLACED IT IN DRIVE TO PULL AWAY, AND IT ACCELERATED QUICKLY TOWARDS ANOTHER CAR. I APPLIED THE BRAKE AND THE CAR STOPPED BUT MADE LOUD SOUNDS LIKE I HAD SKIDDED TO A STOP. IT STARTLED AND CAUGHT THE ATTENTION OF TWO ADULTS IN THE PARKING LOT. MY PASSENGER WAS MY SISTER AND SHE ASKED, 'WHAT WAS THAT?'. ALL THREE INCIDENTS OCCURRED WHILE PARKING, PUTTING THE CAR INTO DRIVE, AND TAKING MY FOOT OFF OF THE BRAKE. AT NO TIME DID MY FOOT TOUCH THE ACCELERATOR. IRONICALLY, AFTER THE FIRST TWO INCIDENCES, I WAS GOING TO SEE IF THE VEHICLE DID IT ONE MORE TIME. IF IT DID, I WAS GOING TO CONTACT HYUNDAI RIGHT AWAY. UNFORTUNATELY, THE LAST TIME RESULTED IN TODAY'S CRASH AND CAUSED DAMAGE TO TWO VEHICLES. AFTER TODAY'S INCIDENT I RESEARCHED THE ISSUE AND FOUND THE PROBLEM IS NOT UNIQUE TO MY MODEL. IT SEEMS THAT MANY HYUNDAI MODELS HAVE EXPERIENCED UNINTENDED ACCELERATION. TO SAY I'M DISAPPOINTED, IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT. I LOVE MY IONIQ, AND THE GAS MILEAGE IT BRINGS. BUT I CAN NO LONGER TRUST IT WITH MY LIFE, THE LIFE OF FAMILY MEMBERS, OR OTHER MOTORISTS. I AM LOOKING FOR A RESOLUTION FROM HYUNDAI.

  • Summary: AS I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK, MY VEHICLE JERKED A COUPLE OF TIMES AND WAS SPEEDING UP AND SLOWING DOWN BY ITSELF. AS I WAS DRIVING THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT APPEARED AND DID NOT GO AWAY AT ALL. ALTHOUGH, MY CAR WAS ACCELERATING AND SLOWING DOWN BY ITSELF, IT WAS STRUGGLING TO GO PAST 20MPH. WHEN I GOT HOME AND PARKED MY CAR, I WAS UNABLE TO REVERSE MY CAR, EVEN THOUGH IT WAS IN REVERSE. LUCKILY, THERE WAS NO ONE BEHIND ME OR IN FRONT OF ME OR ELSE I'M SURE THERE WOULD'VE BEEN A CRASH. ON TOP OF THIS, THE CAR HAS ONLY 1700MILES ON IT AND WAS BARELY 3MONTHS OLD AND THIS PROBLEM APPEARED, I'M SUPER DISAPPOINTED AND THE COMPANY HASN'T EVEN TOLD ME WHAT WAS WRONG WITH THE CAR YET.

Negative 2017 Hyundai Ioniq hybrid car reviews

  1. Amani Hodkiewicz 2024-08-16

The car has experienced multiple issues, including a loss of power while on the freeway and lurching forward on two separate occasions. Despite my daughter having possession of the car for only 14 days since July 18, Hyundai has offered to buy the car back after a half-hour discussion. We will be considering their offer after having made payments for this duration. It is disappointing to experience such issues with a vehicle, but we will handle the situation with professionalism.

I had a 2017 limited hybrid and was initially impressed with the features and value for money. Unfortunately, shortly after driving it home, I experienced a terrifying incident on the interstate when the car nearly died. The vehicle remained in the shop for the first five months of ownership, and I had the opportunity to drive every Hyundai loaner in my area. However, I was grateful for the great warranty that came with the car. The ride was decent, and the fit and finish were good, although I did notice where cuts had been made for production. The entertainment system's head unit was fantastic, but the standard speakers were terrible. Unfortunately, the car had a significant number of mechanical issues, and although Hyundai offered to buy it back, I declined, hoping that the problems could be resolved. However, even after the problem was All of the problems were well known on the American Facebook forum for the Ioniq, so I know it wasn’t just mine. Multiple people on the forum had some of the same issues. I hope they have worked out the kinks because the idea of the Ioniq is great. Unfortunately, the follow-through was less than desirable, which is why I traded it for another vehicle.

Positive 2017 Hyundai Ioniq hybrid car reviews

  1. Eric Walter 2024-11-28

I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your 2017 SEL! It sounds like you got a great deal on a car that's in excellent condition. The gas mileage is impressive, especially on the highway. I'm happy to hear that you and your wife find the ride comfortable and that the acceleration is satisfactory. I understand that entering and exiting the vehicle can be a bit challenging due to the car's low profile, but overall it sounds like you're very pleased with your purchase.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I've had it for 2 weeks now and I'm really getting used to it. It's been getting about 50 mpg in mostly urban driving, which is great! It has all the features I need and it's a nice ride for its size. It handles well and has plenty of power. I wanted to give you an update 2 1/2 years later and let you know that I'm still really happy with this car. I just got back from a 1000 mile road trip and it did great! It has decent power, great mileage, and is a comfortable ride for its size. My only complaint would be that it suffers superficial scratches more than I would like. Also, it didn't hold up well when it hit some road debris on a freeway. However, I think you need to pay much more for a car that has better paint and is a bit sturdier. Thanks for listening to my experience!

If you're in Georgia, head over to Southtowne in Newnan and ask for Chad. He's an excellent listener and will help you find the perfect car that meets all your needs. As someone who used to love muscle cars, I was pleasantly surprised by the Ioniq Hybrid. It drives like a dream and has great acceleration when you need it, even if you're used to muscle cars. However, it's important to be careful because it's so smooth that you might not realize how fast you're going and get a super speeder ticket. The suspension is fantastic and makes you feel like you're riding on a cloud. I also appreciate the blind spot detectors on the mirrors that alert you if someone is in your blind spot. Additionally, it makes a noise to warn you not to back up if there's something you can't see. I've only had it for three days, but I haven't had to get gas yet and I've already driven 500 miles!

I usually need a car with a lot of space to haul things around, but when I bought this car, I was really looking for better gas mileage after driving two Xterras that only got 15 miles to the gallon. I wasn't interested in the Prius, so I looked to see what Hyundai had to offer since I've heard good things about this make. The Ioniq was brand new, and even though I never buy tech or cars in their first year, this car really impressed me. The price was phenomenal for a hybrid, and I opted for the base trim package, but even the upgrade packages were still reasonable. I've never regretted giving this car a try. I love the crisp handling and zippy takeoff. Some people think this car doesn't have good reviews for takeoff power, but I can guess why this is. My husband's driving style is much more aggressive than my own, and he frequently bogs the car down on takeoff. I can feel the motor kick in and work with it using a steady increase of foot pressure on takeoff, and I clear the crowd easily from a dead stop. If I need to pass on the highway, I engage acceleration before pulling out, and once engaged, the car is ready to move. Knowing how to make the car perform at peak for acceleration and for mileage (separately, speed performance and eco drive are really two different ends of the spectrum) is my geeky way of connecting to and enjoying my machine. The only drawback I've had with this car is that I'd rather climb up than crouch down into it. I like riding up high, but that's just me. I've received lots of compliments on the roominess of the rear seating, which easily accommodates full-sized adults nicely without putting the front seat passenger in the dash. Apparently, the sound system is really good in the back seat too. This is my first car with a backup camera and navigation, and I've found the camera to be extremely easy to see, except for an occasional foggy lens from rain or humidity. The navigation screen is just the right size in my opinion. I don't really want a wide screen TV on my dash. I will miss many features of this car when I sell it, but I need a van now. I will miss that 11-gallon tank most of all.

I have to say, Hyundai really did their homework when they created the Ionic hybrid. As a loyal Toyota buyer, I was hesitant to consider another brand, but after looking at this car, I have to admit that Hyundai has beaten Toyota at their own game. For the same price as a comparable Toyota Prius, you can get a blue model Ionic with a much better warranty, including a lifetime warranty on the hybrid battery - a first for a hybrid. Plus, the blue model comes with XM satellite radio at no additional charge, which is not available on a Toyota package until you jump to package three. I recently drove home a 2017 Hyundai Ionic blue model from Hyundai of Conway Arkansas, and it was a certified pre-owned car with only 6500 miles on it. The deal was too good to pass up, and the dealership went above and beyond to make it happen. I was smiling all the way home during my 100-mile drive, and on top of it, I got an amazing 60.2 miles per gallon. I highly recommend this car to anyone shopping for a gas-efficient car with style.
