Hyundai Ioniq hybrid problems

The Hyundai Ioniq is a compact five-door liftback manufactured and marketed by Hyundai. The nameplate Ioniq is a portmanteau of ion and unique. It is marketed as the first Hyundai automobile to be offered without a standard internal combustion engine, but rather sold in hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and all-electric variants.
The Ioniq Hybrid debuted in South Korea in January 2016, with all three variants debuting at 2016 Geneva and New York auto shows. The hybrid variant launched in its home market in February 2016, followed by the electric model in July 2016. The plug-in hybrid version followed in February 2017.
From its first model year (2017) through the 2019 model year, the Ioniq Electric had been the EPA's most efficient vehicle with a rated fuel economy of 136 miles per gallon gasoline equivalent (24.8 kWh/100 mi; 15.4 kWh/100 km). The Ioniq Blue Hybrid version has been rated at 4.1 L/100 km (58 mpg‑US), making it the most fuel-efficient hybrid vehicle to be mass-produced.
Following its discontinuation in South Korea in 2021, production of the Ioniq ended in July 2022 in favour of battery electric lineup of Ioniq-badged models starting from the Ioniq 5 hatchback and Ioniq 6 sedan with Ioniq 7 to follow.

Common Hyundai Ioniq hybrid problems
Based on complaints from owners of the Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid, several common problems have been reported:
- Risk of Power Relay Fire:
- There have been instances where certain Ioniq models may suffer from a faulty power relay that could, under extreme circumstances, pose a fire risk. To mitigate this, Hyundai dealers are replacing the power relay and inspecting the power cable and relay assembly for any damage, ensuring the safety of the vehicle.
- Engine Problems:
- Owners have reported intermittent engine issues, such as the engine warning light coming on along with messages like "check hybrid system." These problems were traced back to issues with the hybrid engines communicating with each other, leading to performance disruptions. Additionally, some owners have faced difficulties with the speakers intermittently not working, requiring resets or temporary fixes.
- Suspension Issues:
- Complaints have surfaced regarding repetitive suspension problems, column shaft replacements, and even transmission replacements. Owners have expressed dissatisfaction with the need for multiple warranty repairs due to various issues like defective shocks, speakers, steering wheel column, and transmissions, impacting the driving experience and safety concerns.
These reported problems highlight the importance of thorough inspections and maintenance checks when considering or owning a Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid. Addressing these issues promptly can help ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle, providing a smoother driving experience for owners.
Is the Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid reliable?
Reliability Survey. The hybrid Ioniqs have always performed well in previous surveys, but weren't featured in this latest one. However, the Ioniq Electric only came in 19th place out of 20 cars in the electric car class. At least all issues were fixed under warranty, according to our participants.
Why is Hyundai discontinuing Ioniq Hybrid?
The worldwide discontinuation of IONIQ represents a long-planned decision by Hyundai to meet changing consumer demands in the automotive sector. Which vehicle is the most similiar to the IONIQ? Although there will be no direct successor to IONIQ, its spirit will live on through Hyundai's IONIQ EV line-up brand.
How long does Ioniq Hybrid last?
between 3 to 5 years
Your 2022 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid battery will generally last between 3 to 5 years, but that can fluctuate heavily depending on weather conditions type of battery, battery size, and driving habits.

- Summary: The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid. The contact stated while driving 20 MPH, the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle lurched forward and then stalled. The contact was able to pull over to the side of the road. The vehicle failed to restart and was towed to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the main power relay assembly had overheated, and the main power relay fuse was blown. The mechanic determined that the main power relay assembly and the fuse needed to be replaced. The mechanic determined that the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V459000 (Hybrid Propulsion System). The vehicle was then towed to the dealer for the recall repair; however, the dealer informed the contact that the recall repair was not necessary, and that the picture of the main power relay part would be sent to the manufacturer. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was opened. The manufacturer contacted the dealer regarding the recall repair. The dealer then informed the contact that the recall repair was performed per the manufacturer's instructions. The contact was later informed by the dealer that the recall repair had not been performed and only the picture of the main power relay part had been sent to the manufacturer. The manufacturer was contacted and informed the contact that they had not received a proof of the service that the dealer had performed on the vehicle. The vehicle was towed back to the independent mechanic, where it was confirmed that the recall repair had not been performed on the vehicle. The mechanic informed the contact that the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V459000 (Hybrid Propulsion System). The vehicle was not repaired. - Date Of Incident: 2023-10-23
- Date Complaint: 2023-11-12
- VIN: KMHC85LC2HU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Integrated Brake Accuation Unit failed per dealer repair location. Codes indicated on attached repair invoice receipt. (Document is Uploaded). This was a very expensive repair. Per dealer service advisor and technician they had never seen this before. 2 brake lights on the dash indicated major brake failure. The vehicle was immediately taken to the dealer for repair. See additional details regarding concern, cause. correction, and parts replaced on invoice. If this had not been repaired immediately, this could have put others at risk and caused an accident. Although there are several internet references to brake problems with this model of Hundai Ioniq Hybrid, there are no recalls. The powertrain and engine are warrantied for 100K miles and the batteries have an original lifetime owner warranty. Due to the critical nature of a braking system, I believe braking systems on hybrids for this part should have a lifetime warranty. I want to make it clear that parts that wear out due to use for example brake pads, rotors, master cylinder etc. are not what I am referencing. Since the integrated brake accuation unit is a part commonly seen on hybrid products, I think this a part that warrants investigation and recall. This investigation may go beyond the Hyndai hybrid products. Due to the expense of the repair, I believe this repair could put the owners of all hybrid auto products at risk.

- Summary: My lcd screen constantly goes black. A couple times the steering wheel locked the wipers and washer fluid went off at the same time. I had to hit the brakes and power the car on and off to reset it while making a turn. When having my window motor replaced for the SECOND time my dash where the speed is at all when black while driving on the freeway. I had to pull over and restart the car. My paint and my clear coat is separating on my trunk. It looks white not oxidation just separating and white. My driver side door button to lock the car kept getting stuck and was locking and unlocking. this left the possibilities of my car getting stolen from the door lock and the window motor leaving my window half down. My safety and the safety of others is obviously at risk with the electrical malfunctions. My local dealership left my issue’s unresolved for currently FIVE months with little to no compensation. I guess the life of my family and everyone else on the road is only $420.

- Summary: I brought my Hyundai on November 18, 2022 to Huntington Hyundai at 1221 E. Jericho Tpke., for service to take care of a recall. My paperwork from Huntington Hyundai shows that recall 232 was performed. But in 2023 I began plans to move to Canada and to import my Hyundai into Canada. The Canadian registrar of imported vehicles told me that according to recall records, there is an outstanding recall on the vehicle. Recall 232! I learned from visiting a dealer in Buffalo New York that not Huntington Hyundai never applied to Hyundai USA for reimbursement for work performed on recall 232. Huntington Hyundai failed to even perform the recall that they stated they performed.

- Summary: My 2019 hyndai ioniq electrical system stopped working and results in the front door claiming that is not open. An internet search showed that this is common many hyundais and in particular the ioniq. The issue with this is 1) there is no way to know how bad this electrical issue, 2) since the door may or may not be open, the risk of the door opening while driving is present, and 3) all other notifications on my dash are no longer usable; i have no way of knowing fuel left, mpg, or any other safety warnings on the dash. Finally, the issue creates a constant beep that does not stop. This is a safety issue seeing as it is so loud, it makes being aware of the sounds around us nearly impossible to hear.

- Summary: I have received a couple of notices from Hyundai concerning a recall for my Hyundai. Here’s been my experience—called Motor World Hyundai (150 MotorWorld Dr Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702). I was told that they didn’t have any parts in but would call me when the parts are in. They insisted on getting my contact information and since have barraged me with sales calls, but no information on “the parts”. After a few weeks, my wife called again, they claimed they have no idea when parts will come in, this person did not ask her name, did not offer to check status, did not offer to call back. (by the way, we tried to buy a new Ioniq last year and while they kept asking us to “come in to test drive” (not sure what we were test driving because they said they didn’t have the car) So, no Ioniq purchase. Our next call was to Dickson City Hyundai, (1519 Scranton Carbondale Highway, Scranton, PA 18508). They indicated a lack of parts as well. We requested they order the parts. They indicated that they require that we go there first (about an hour away) to have the car inspected. If they determine that they should order the parts, then they’ll order them and we’ll have to come back to get them installed. So according to the recall letter, the situation is dangerous, we need a recall done, you’ve notified us more than once, but we apparently can’t get it done without a significant effort on our part. A Safety Recall has been issued on your 2017 Ioniq Hybrid/Plug-In Hybrid’s Power Relay Assembly (PRA). Recall 232 Remedy is Available This notice applies to your vehicle, VIN: KMHC05LC7HU030998 I tried to click on “make an appointment” and it goes to “Page can’t be found” So, I was so happy with my Hyundai I was going to buy another, no test drive, no shopping for other brands but no can do. Now I’m told that I need a recall, but no one is interested in doing it.

Congratulations on your new 2019 Hyundai Ionic Hybrid in blue! It's great to hear that you're enjoying the car and its features. The bright blue color is really attractive and the hatchback design is a personal favorite of mine too. The car is also very fuel-efficient, with an estimated average of 55 mpg, which is the best in its class! The car is comfortable and quiet inside, although the basic driver's seat doesn't have the lumbar adjustability you had in your previous car. However, the SEL or Limited models may have this feature. It's also worth noting that the hybrid comes with a lifetime warranty on the battery for the original buyer, which is a fantastic value. Thank you for recommending this hybrid, it sounds like a great choice!

Vehicle year: 2020
I've been wanting a more economical vehicle for a few years now, but I couldn't find one that I liked the style and ride of. Then I came across the Hyundai Ioniq line and was really impressed. After doing a lot of research and talking to several Hyundai dealers, I finally made a deal for a white Ioniq Limited with the Ultimate package. I've had the Ioniq for almost a month now and I'm really happy with it. I'm averaging 50 MPG, which I think is great for a brand new vehicle. On one road trip, it even managed 62 MPG! With a hybrid, you need to learn to drive differently to achieve good MPG, but it's worth it. Some people say the seats aren't comfortable, but I'm 210 pounds and I think they're just fine. I also think the handling and braking are good - not like a sports car, but still good. I'm in my mid-70s, but the road noise seems about normal for a vehicle of this class. The Ioniq is solid going over railroad tracks and bumps. It has most of the creature comforts of vehicles that cost twice as much. There are three things I wish it had: rain-sensing wipers, a power passenger seat, and a hood that didn't need a rod to hold it up. With the front seats in the position I would normally have them, there's ample room in the rear seat for passengers. And of course, it's loaded with all the safety and tech stuff, like lane-keeping and departure warning, backup warning and camera, rear cross-traffic alert, blind spot alert, adaptive cruise, dynamic bending headlights, navigation, Android Auto, Bluelink, Infinity Audio, and memory driver's seat. The rear luggage area has plenty of room for four passengers' luggage, and because it's a hatchback, it has more room than a sedan of this size with a trunk. There's also some storage space under the luggage area floor. The Ioniq comes with an emergency puncture repair kit, but I ordered a space-saver spare kit which fits nicely under the luggage compartment floor. The dealer experience, Crain Hyundai of Conway AR, was the best. I told them what I wanted and they got it.There was no pressure to buy an extended warranty or accessories and it was delivered with a full tank of fuel.

The Hyundai Ionic SEL is an excellent choice, especially if you opt for the Technology package. The car offers a smooth ride and comes equipped with all the safety features you could want, all at a very reasonable price. The only downside is that the split rear window can make it difficult to see traffic behind you. However, the car does offer Blind Spot Monitoring across all trim levels, which is a feature not found in many other vehicles. If you're looking for a feature-packed vehicle, the Ionic is definitely worth considering!

Vehicle year: 2017
Congratulations on crossing 106,000 miles in your 2017 Ioniq! It's great to hear that you've had such a trouble-free experience with routine maintenance being your only significant cost. The recalls related to the hybrid nature of the design have been taken care of without any charges to you, which is fantastic. Thank you for the advice on getting the correct tires for the best mileage. It's impressive that out of the six cars you currently insure, this one is always running well. With well over one million miles on the road over the last 55 years, it's wonderful to hear that this car is the most reliable one you've ever owned, especially given the mileage. Keep up the good work!

I've been driving my Ioniq for a month now and I'm absolutely loving it! Before leasing it, I had a 2017 Elantra and a 2008 Prius, and there were things I loved about each of them. But I never thought I'd find everything I wanted in one car. The Ioniq caught my eye with its $4800 rebate, which was a sweet deal since I'm planning on leasing to buy. I wasn't a fan of the new design of the Prius, and it was too expensive for me anyway. The Ioniq has the classic look of the older Prius, which I adore. Even in the cold New England weather, I'm getting 44 mpg, which is really impressive. I know it'll be even better in the summer, and the car is still breaking in. The driver's seat is super comfortable with lumbar support, and I love the flat bottom steering wheel. I don't have to move the seat to get in or out, which is great. With the 6-speed transmission, I keep forgetting that I'm driving a hybrid. It has much more power than my old Prius, which is a huge plus. I also love having Android Auto, even though it sometimes disconnects when I'm using Google Maps. Voice-to-text is a great feature too. The only thing that I find weird is that there's no rear wiper for a hatchback. Come on, Hyundai! Also, I wish the hatch design was flat access instead of well style. It's much more difficult having to lift stuff out of the back instead of being able to pull it straight out. The only thing I miss about the Prius is the numerous storage compartments. I loved the double gloveboxes in the Prius. The center console is way too small in the Ioniq. But these are just minor criticisms. Overall, I'm head over heels for this car and extremely happy with my decision to get it!

After driving 7000 miles, mostly on the freeway, I have noticed that the transmission struggles to find the correct gear on steeper hills or bridges. It is important to note that you may not achieve the advertised mileage at highway speeds of 70mph. While the interior can be noisy in the back seat area, both the interior and exterior are very nice. Unfortunately, there is no jack provided for a flat tire, and you must use a fill kit which can result in a costly bill to replace the tire and pressure sensor. Although the Sirius radio is costly and not worth the price unless you drive constantly, I still prefer it over a CD. It is important to note that it can be costly to have pay-to-play radio that sits in the driveway. Overall, I like this vehicle more than the Prius we had. However, it may take some time to get used to it, especially if you live in an area with hills. I would recommend this vehicle for those who live in flat areas. Good luck with your choice! Best regards, Agnes.

I love the great gas mileage I get with this car! However, I have been experiencing some issues with the electronics. Unfortunately, I had to have the car towed in for service less than a year after purchasing it because it wouldn't start. Now, I am having issues with various electronics, even though I have only had the car for just over a year. For example, this morning the lights came on when I started the car, and I assumed they would turn off once I got on the road, but they didn't. Even after turning the car off, the lights stayed on. Additionally, the method of connecting my phone to the car has disappeared and is no longer an option. This has happened before, and I even bought a new phone, but when my phone upgraded, the system stopped working again. Lastly, the fob keeps falling off, which is frustrating. I have had some difficulty with service because they do not return my car or respond to web requests for service.

I am disappointed that both the 2019 SEL and 2020 Limited models required major work before reaching 30,000 miles, despite financing around $64,000. However, I am grateful for the comfortable ride and efficiency of the car. It has taken me to various destinations, including Florida, Wisconsin, Tennessee, the coast, and the mountains. The car is stylish, well-built, and solid. It is also well-appointed and has great features such as a sound system, ApplePlay, and adaptive cruise control. Although I have had some issues with the transmission and fuel injector, I appreciate the great customer service from the dealership. I hope the car lasts through the warranty and financing period. For background, I have owned three hybrids previously and enjoyed them very much. After researching and price shopping, I chose to purchase the 2019 Hyundai Ioniq SEL, which had excellent rebates and came with a 100,000 mile powertrain warranty and a lifetime warranty on the hybrid battery. I brought up my concerns to a service advisor once again, and they kindly agreed to resurface the rotors. After the rotors were resurfaced, I requested that they take the car for a test drive and decelerate from 60 to 40 mph, and let me know what they heard. They performed the test as I described and determined that there was a problem. Although they weren't sure if it was the hybrid system or the transmission, my car was in their shop for two weeks (give or take a day), and the transmission was replaced under warranty. I was pleasantly surprised when Hyundai corporate reached out to me to ensure that I was satisfied with the service that the dealership was providing, and that I was still satisfied with my car. The great service at my Hyundai dealership (Johnson Hyundai in Cary, NC) did their best to bridge the gap between what I was sold and what I received. Although Hyundai declined to offer an extension on the warranty, I received a response from corporate after a lengthy delay in responses on their part. Since I did not respond to them within 48 hours of the receipt of their e-mail, they deemed the case closed. In conclusion, I cannot recommend this car to anyone in good faith. It will have to make it to 100,000 miles without so much as a misfire for me to be able to recommend it. The car has great features and the efficiency is the best in the class, but there's a reason that Hyundai priced it so low and offered incentives. Live and learn. Here's hoping that the little car improves with age, and I am once again satisfied with my purchase...However, I have only been able to establish a first-name basis with the service department and dealership managers so far.

I test drove this car and I found the rear visibility to be quite uncomfortable, especially through the rear window, which was too small for my taste and had that wide bar going through the middle of it. It is impossible to back up without using the camera. However, I believe that this car could be made safer by addressing the blind spots.

I purchased a 2017 Ioniq, the first one sold in New Mexico. Unfortunately, after two years, the car stopped working and has been in and out of the shop for over four months. Despite replacing everything, the issue remains unresolved. While this has been a frustrating experience, I have been working with a case manager from the national office who has been helpful in paying for my rental. Although the car was in the shop for almost a month, I was able to drive it to dinner and back without any issues. While I understand the concerns about safety, I am confident that the issue will be resolved soon. I appreciate Hyundai's efforts to address the issue and value their commitment to customer satisfaction. While this has been a challenging experience, I remain optimistic that the car will be fully operational soon. Thank you for your understanding.
