Hyundai Ioniq hybrid problems

hyundai logo

The Hyundai Ioniq is a compact five-door liftback manufactured and marketed by Hyundai. The nameplate Ioniq is a portmanteau of ion and unique. It is marketed as the first Hyundai automobile to be offered without a standard internal combustion engine, but rather sold in hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and all-electric variants.

The Ioniq Hybrid debuted in South Korea in January 2016, with all three variants debuting at 2016 Geneva and New York auto shows. The hybrid variant launched in its home market in February 2016, followed by the electric model in July 2016. The plug-in hybrid version followed in February 2017.

From its first model year (2017) through the 2019 model year, the Ioniq Electric had been the EPA's most efficient vehicle with a rated fuel economy of 136 miles per gallon gasoline equivalent (24.8 kWh/100 mi; 15.4 kWh/100 km). The Ioniq Blue Hybrid version has been rated at 4.1 L/100 km (58 mpg‑US), making it the most fuel-efficient hybrid vehicle to be mass-produced.

Following its discontinuation in South Korea in 2021, production of the Ioniq ended in July 2022 in favour of battery electric lineup of Ioniq-badged models starting from the Ioniq 5 hatchback and Ioniq 6 sedan with Ioniq 7 to follow.

Common Hyundai Ioniq hybrid problems

Based on complaints from owners of the Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid, several common problems have been reported:

  • Risk of Power Relay Fire:
    • There have been instances where certain Ioniq models may suffer from a faulty power relay that could, under extreme circumstances, pose a fire risk. To mitigate this, Hyundai dealers are replacing the power relay and inspecting the power cable and relay assembly for any damage, ensuring the safety of the vehicle.
  • Engine Problems:
    • Owners have reported intermittent engine issues, such as the engine warning light coming on along with messages like "check hybrid system." These problems were traced back to issues with the hybrid engines communicating with each other, leading to performance disruptions. Additionally, some owners have faced difficulties with the speakers intermittently not working, requiring resets or temporary fixes.
  • Suspension Issues:
    • Complaints have surfaced regarding repetitive suspension problems, column shaft replacements, and even transmission replacements. Owners have expressed dissatisfaction with the need for multiple warranty repairs due to various issues like defective shocks, speakers, steering wheel column, and transmissions, impacting the driving experience and safety concerns.

These reported problems highlight the importance of thorough inspections and maintenance checks when considering or owning a Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid. Addressing these issues promptly can help ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle, providing a smoother driving experience for owners.

  • Summary: The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid. The contact stated while driving 20 MPH, the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle lurched forward and then stalled. The contact was able to pull over to the side of the road. The vehicle failed to restart and was towed to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the main power relay assembly had overheated, and the main power relay fuse was blown. The mechanic determined that the main power relay assembly and the fuse needed to be replaced. The mechanic determined that the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V459000 (Hybrid Propulsion System). The vehicle was then towed to the dealer for the recall repair; however, the dealer informed the contact that the recall repair was not necessary, and that the picture of the main power relay part would be sent to the manufacturer. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was opened. The manufacturer contacted the dealer regarding the recall repair. The dealer then informed the contact that the recall repair was performed per the manufacturer's instructions. The contact was later informed by the dealer that the recall repair had not been performed and only the picture of the main power relay part had been sent to the manufacturer. The manufacturer was contacted and informed the contact that they had not received a proof of the service that the dealer had performed on the vehicle. The vehicle was towed back to the independent mechanic, where it was confirmed that the recall repair had not been performed on the vehicle. The mechanic informed the contact that the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V459000 (Hybrid Propulsion System). The vehicle was not repaired. • Date Complaint: 2023-11-12
  • VIN: KMHC85LC2HU
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Integrated Brake Accuation Unit failed per dealer repair location. Codes indicated on attached repair invoice receipt. (Document is Uploaded). This was a very expensive repair. Per dealer service advisor and technician they had never seen this before. 2 brake lights on the dash indicated major brake failure. The vehicle was immediately taken to the dealer for repair. See additional details regarding concern, cause. correction, and parts replaced on invoice. If this had not been repaired immediately, this could have put others at risk and caused an accident. Although there are several internet references to brake problems with this model of Hundai Ioniq Hybrid, there are no recalls. The powertrain and engine are warrantied for 100K miles and the batteries have an original lifetime owner warranty. Due to the critical nature of a braking system, I believe braking systems on hybrids for this part should have a lifetime warranty. I want to make it clear that parts that wear out due to use for example brake pads, rotors, master cylinder etc. are not what I am referencing. Since the integrated brake accuation unit is a part commonly seen on hybrid products, I think this a part that warrants investigation and recall. This investigation may go beyond the Hyndai hybrid products. Due to the expense of the repair, I believe this repair could put the owners of all hybrid auto products at risk.

  • Date Complaint: 2023-08-30
  • VIN: KMHC75LC4JU
  • Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: My lcd screen constantly goes black. A couple times the steering wheel locked the wipers and washer fluid went off at the same time. I had to hit the brakes and power the car on and off to reset it while making a turn. When having my window motor replaced for the SECOND time my dash where the speed is at all when black while driving on the freeway. I had to pull over and restart the car. My paint and my clear coat is separating on my trunk. It looks white not oxidation just separating and white. My driver side door button to lock the car kept getting stuck and was locking and unlocking. this left the possibilities of my car getting stolen from the door lock and the window motor leaving my window half down. My safety and the safety of others is obviously at risk with the electrical malfunctions. My local dealership left my issue’s unresolved for currently FIVE months with little to no compensation. I guess the life of my family and everyone else on the road is only $420.

  • Summary: I brought my Hyundai on November 18, 2022 to Huntington Hyundai at 1221 E. Jericho Tpke., for service to take care of a recall. My paperwork from Huntington Hyundai shows that recall 232 was performed. But in 2023 I began plans to move to Canada and to import my Hyundai into Canada. The Canadian registrar of imported vehicles told me that according to recall records, there is an outstanding recall on the vehicle. Recall 232! I learned from visiting a dealer in Buffalo New York that not Huntington Hyundai never applied to Hyundai USA for reimbursement for work performed on recall 232. Huntington Hyundai failed to even perform the recall that they stated they performed.

  • VIN: KMHC65LC0KU
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: My 2019 hyndai ioniq electrical system stopped working and results in the front door claiming that is not open. An internet search showed that this is common many hyundais and in particular the ioniq. The issue with this is 1) there is no way to know how bad this electrical issue, 2) since the door may or may not be open, the risk of the door opening while driving is present, and 3) all other notifications on my dash are no longer usable; i have no way of knowing fuel left, mpg, or any other safety warnings on the dash. Finally, the issue creates a constant beep that does not stop. This is a safety issue seeing as it is so loud, it makes being aware of the sounds around us nearly impossible to hear.

  • Summary: I have received a couple of notices from Hyundai concerning a recall for my Hyundai. Here’s been my experience—called Motor World Hyundai (150 MotorWorld Dr Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702). I was told that they didn’t have any parts in but would call me when the parts are in. They insisted on getting my contact information and since have barraged me with sales calls, but no information on “the parts”. After a few weeks, my wife called again, they claimed they have no idea when parts will come in, this person did not ask her name, did not offer to check status, did not offer to call back. (by the way, we tried to buy a new Ioniq last year and while they kept asking us to “come in to test drive” (not sure what we were test driving because they said they didn’t have the car) So, no Ioniq purchase. Our next call was to Dickson City Hyundai, (1519 Scranton Carbondale Highway, Scranton, PA 18508). They indicated a lack of parts as well. We requested they order the parts. They indicated that they require that we go there first (about an hour away) to have the car inspected. If they determine that they should order the parts, then they’ll order them and we’ll have to come back to get them installed. So according to the recall letter, the situation is dangerous, we need a recall done, you’ve notified us more than once, but we apparently can’t get it done without a significant effort on our part. A Safety Recall has been issued on your 2017 Ioniq Hybrid/Plug-In Hybrid’s Power Relay Assembly (PRA). Recall 232 Remedy is Available This notice applies to your vehicle, VIN: KMHC05LC7HU030998 I tried to click on “make an appointment” and it goes to “Page can’t be found” So, I was so happy with my Hyundai I was going to buy another, no test drive, no shopping for other brands but no can do. Now I’m told that I need a recall, but no one is interested in doing it.

Latest negative Hyundai Ioniq hybrid car reviews

  1. Kenneth Lowe 2025-05-09

    Vehicle year: 2018

Hey there! Just wanted to give you a heads up that it's not recommended to place any electronics on the passenger seat. Also, I noticed that the tire fell off the rim and the back up camera is a bit fuzzy. Just a heads up, this car is a hatchback and doesn't have wipers. Additionally, the MPG isn't quite close to 60. Lastly, I've been trying to get in touch with Hyundai for almost a year now, but unfortunately haven't received a call back yet. Take care!

  2. Major Adams 2025-04-18

    Vehicle year: 2020

I am disappointed that both the 2019 SEL and 2020 Limited models required major work before reaching 30,000 miles, despite financing around $64,000. However, I am grateful for the comfortable ride and efficiency of the car. It has taken me to various destinations, including Florida, Wisconsin, Tennessee, the coast, and the mountains. The car is stylish, well-built, and solid. It is also well-appointed and has great features such as a sound system, ApplePlay, and adaptive cruise control. Although I have had some issues with the transmission and fuel injector, I appreciate the great customer service from the dealership. I hope the car lasts through the warranty and financing period. For background, I have owned three hybrids previously and enjoyed them very much. After researching and price shopping, I chose to purchase the 2019 Hyundai Ioniq SEL, which had excellent rebates and came with a 100,000 mile powertrain warranty and a lifetime warranty on the hybrid battery. I brought up my concerns to a service advisor once again, and they kindly agreed to resurface the rotors. After the rotors were resurfaced, I requested that they take the car for a test drive and decelerate from 60 to 40 mph, and let me know what they heard. They performed the test as I described and determined that there was a problem. Although they weren't sure if it was the hybrid system or the transmission, my car was in their shop for two weeks (give or take a day), and the transmission was replaced under warranty. I was pleasantly surprised when Hyundai corporate reached out to me to ensure that I was satisfied with the service that the dealership was providing, and that I was still satisfied with my car. The great service at my Hyundai dealership (Johnson Hyundai in Cary, NC) did their best to bridge the gap between what I was sold and what I received. Although Hyundai declined to offer an extension on the warranty, I received a response from corporate after a lengthy delay in responses on their part. Since I did not respond to them within 48 hours of the receipt of their e-mail, they deemed the case closed. In conclusion, I hope that the little car improves with age, and I am once again satisfied with my purchase. However, I cannot recommend this car to anyone in good faith. It will have to make it to 100,000 miles without so much as a misfire for me to be able to recommend it. The car has great features and the efficiency is the best in the class, but there's a reason that Hyundai priced it so low and offered incentives. Live and learn. Here's hoping that the little car improves with age. However, I have only been able to establish a first-name basis with the service department and dealership managers so far.

After driving 7000 miles, mostly on the freeway, I have noticed that the transmission struggles to find the correct gear on steeper hills or bridges. It is important to note that you may not achieve the advertised mileage at highway speeds of 70mph. While the interior can be noisy in the back seat area, both the interior and exterior are very nice. Unfortunately, there is no jack provided for a flat tire, and you must use a fill kit which can result in a costly bill to replace the tire and pressure sensor. Although the Sirius radio is costly and not worth the price unless you drive constantly, I still prefer it over a CD. It is important to note that it can be costly to have pay-to-play radio that sits in the driveway. Overall, I like this vehicle more than the Prius we had. However, it may take some time to get used to it, especially if you live in an area with hills. I would recommend this vehicle for those who live in flat areas. Good luck with your choice! Best regards, Agnes.

I love the great gas mileage I get with this car! However, I have been experiencing some issues with the electronics. Unfortunately, I had to have the car towed in for service less than a year after purchasing it because it wouldn't start. Now, I am having issues with various electronics, even though I have only had the car for just over a year. For example, this morning the lights came on when I started the car, and I assumed they would turn off once I got on the road, but they didn't. Even after turning the car off, the lights stayed on. Additionally, the method of connecting my phone to the car has disappeared and is no longer an option. This has happened before, and I even bought a new phone, but when my phone upgraded, the system stopped working again. Lastly, the fob keeps falling off, which is frustrating. I have had some difficulty with service because they do not return my car or respond to web requests for service.

Great car so far! The gas mileage is phenomenal - over 500 miles on the first tank of gas.

Before buying this car, I highly recommend test driving a Prius for an accurate comparison. However, I am confident that you will still choose the Ioniq! One thing that many reviews fail to mention is the incredible 10 year, 100K mile warranty that Hyundai offers, including a lifetime warranty on the hybrid battery. Even if you don't need warranty work, you'll be pleasantly greeted and treated with respect at any Hyundai dealership. Hyundai is committed to delivering a warranty that surpasses the likes of Toyota, who rely heavily on past reputation rather than current manufacturing. In addition to the warranty, Hyundai builds solid, reliable, and well-performing cars at unbeatable prices. It's no wonder why Toyota and Honda can't seem to match Hyundai's features for similar pricing. As a proud owner of nine Hyundais over the last 20 years, I can attest to their quality and reliability. I have never had a transmission problem, electrical problem, or any other issue with any of my Hyundais. My Ioniq, which I have owned for less than two months, has already been driven nearly 3,000 miles under a variety of conditions, and it works perfectly. Thanks to the hybrid system, the air conditioning keeps working at full power even when the engine is stopped in traffic, making for a comfortable ride. You can control the acceleration to suit your needs, whether you're trying to be eco-friendly or in a hurry. On the other hand, when you switch to 'Sport Mode', the car transforms into a completely different beast! It takes off quickly and accelerates briskly up to 45-50 mph in city traffic! In normal drive mode, the car operates in full EV mode up to 50 mph, and stoplight driving is where this car really shines! It can easily push mpg figures UP during city driving! Imagine sitting at a stoplight with the AC keeping you super-cooled, noting your 'mpg' number is static because there is no gasoline being used! A quick acceleration to 45 mph, relax, and now the car is running purely on battery all the way to the next light! Let off and coast and the car goes into regeneration to recover energy that would otherwise have been lost. Additionally, the Internal combustion engine (ICE) uses the Atkinson cycle which makes it 40% thermally efficient - about 40% more efficient than a standard ICE that lacks a motor for down low torque assist. The Ioniq is a great looking, 'small' car that is about twice as big on the inside as it looks. Even the 'Blue' model is nicely equipped and once 'the new wears off' the Blue is the model to own! What's not mentioned in advertisements is that with Apple Car Play, you no longer need an expensive, static, on-board navigation system. Upon connecting your iPhone with a USB/charging cable, the maps function with full turn-by-turn voice navigation is right there! The car is large enough inside to accommodate a rather large driver, plus three people seated across the back. It has a nice, open, airy feel inside. I really like the hatchback feature because with the seats folded, it can hold an amazing amount of stuff! Even with the seats up, my wife was surprised at how many bags of groceries easily fit in the 'trunk'. Operationally speaking, you get in the car, push the start button and all you hear is a chime as the instrument lights come to life.Driving at speeds below 20 mph is almost always on motor alone, unless it's a cold morning and the ICE is running to warm the battery pack. Speaking of battery packs, Hyundai has made a smart move by replacing the super-heavy, totally inefficient 12V accessory battery with a tiny 12V LiION accessory battery that can be 'jumped' from the traction battery if it ever goes flat. Due to the dual clutch, 6-speed automatic transmission, the car feels just like any other car during normal driving. One thing that's a little different is that it doesn't downshift when adding throttle unless the cruise is engaged, or perhaps one is really pushing down on the pedal. The car has been averaging 55 mpg based on actual, calculated mpg at fill-up, but of course, it will record 'trip' mpg well into the 70-80 mpg range once running warm and properly driven. For the price, warranty, and value, it's an excellent buy!

My first impression of this car was very positive. As a loyal Toyota customer for years, I have found their styling to be less than appealing, and the Prius is also significantly more expensive. However, this car has exceeded my expectations and surpassed Toyota at their own game. It comes with many standard features such as keyless ignition, satellite radio, and fantastic mileage that actually beats the Toyota Prius, with 57mpg City and 59mpg Highway. After months of searching, I found a 2017 certified ionic blue model for an amazing price at Superior Hyundai Conway. The dealership was straightforward and treated me very well, with no pressure. I would highly recommend this dealer to anyone. So far, on my first tank, I have averaged 63 miles per gallon, and as a previous, previous, previous owner, I am extremely satisfied.

*** Updates at end of review ***I decided to wait until I had a good feel for the car before writing a review, so after three months and 9,000 miles, here is my take on the 2017 Hyundai Ioniq mid-level SEL…Pros – Much smoother ride compared to my Honda Civic, Ford Escape, Toyota Prius-C, and Chevy Silverado. Stellar gas mileage, but with caveats. Comfortable seats. Roomy interior. Very nice infotainment system. Generous cargo space behind passenger seats.Cons –Wanders all over the road when it’s windy. Engine takes a long time to warm up to provide heat. Speedo not accurate (+2 mph). The MPG - The car is rated at 55mpg combined city/highway MPG. My driving is about 75% highway and 25% city. I live in Northern Indiana, where the roads are relatively flat. In optimal driving conditions (70 degrees, no wind), I can achieve 65mpg without trying to. If I really try to hyper mile, I can approach 70mpg. Two factors seriously hinder gas mileage on the Ioniq: Wind and cold. Expect about a 10% drop when it’s windy (15+mph). We’ve had a cold winter here in Indiana, and I’ve obtained the much less MPG considering the following temperatures: When it’s below 20 degrees, I get 45mpg combined. When it’s between 30-55 degrees, I get 55mpg. Over 55 degrees is where I can get the best gas mileage. The lowest I’ve ever gotten was 43mpg where it was below zero and windy. I’m thinking that the cause of the lower mileage in the winter is because (1) different formulations in gasoline during the winter (2) denser air in the winter, harder to “plow” through (3) the Ioniq has to keep the engine running more often to provide heat for the cabin (4) Less battery performance in colder weather. The Acceleration – It’s a hybrid. Treat it as one and don’t expect it to be something it’s not. You have to give to get, and in this case, you give performance to get MPG. Normally those rules ring true with hybrids, but the Ioniq has a sneaky secret – “Sport” mode. Flip the gearshift to the left, and you enter the auto-manual Sport mode. Fun factor increases but MPG decreases. Again, give and take.Brakes – Some fine tuning may be in order for the Sophomore year of production. Thanks to deer that bolt out in front of me, I can assure you that panic stops are predicable. It’s the “in-between” braking (not hard, not soft) that can be distracting. It feels like the car needs to be tuned a little better to handle the trade-off between regenerative braking and normal braking. It can be harsh sometimes and the nose can dive when you don’t expect it to for the amount of pedal pressure you’re applying.Infotainment – Nice. I have both an iPhone and an Android phone, so I’ve been able to test both CarPlay and Android Auto and they both work great. Nobody has complained about holding a phone conversation with me using the hands-free mode. Drivetrain – Great first-year effort. I like the six-speed dual clutch transmission. It feels more communicative than a slushy CVT. When it is cold outside, you can feel the switch from EV/Engine mode more than what you do in warmer temperatures…just a little blip. Climate Control – Works as advertised. I like the way it automatically switches on the front windshield defroster when needed.Doo-dads – The rear-cross traffic alert combined with the rear-view camera is the best option-combo to me. The electronic dash is nice, but if the sun is directly behind me and shining on it, it can wash out. The lack of a rear-windshield wiper is a non-issue…I haven’t missed it yet.**** Update 08/2018 **** I now have 31,000 miles on it. During the summer, I'm getting 70+mpg on several fill-ups (and over 700 miles per tank) but I don't drive on the interstate. Driving the interstate gets me 55mpg in the summer, 45mpg or less in the winter. Still in love with this car and it's holding up well.**** Update 02/2020 **** I now have 80,000 miles on it. A few more observations - I don't like the headlights, hard to see at night. The stereo doesn't get loud enough to listen over the wind noise of an open window. Mileage has gone down, probably because this car is so pokey and I need to press the accelerator more. I still have original tires on. Car still looks brand new except for paint on the wheels is peeling off. Brakes are OK once you realize how they work. I would not recommend this car for interstate driving, only for 65mph and below roads because of the way it handles.**** Update 02/2021 **** I’ve got 106K miles now. My daily route has changed to where I now drive 25% interstate and the MPG is going down. During the cold of winter, I struggle to get 40MPG. The car is comfy, and I still like it. No problems with it and it feels like it will go 200K by doing prescribed maintenance. Outside of some paint flashing off the wheels due to a powerful car wash, the body has held up without any issues.*** Update 08/2022 ***Now have 142,000 miles. I haven't replaced the brakes yet. I achieved 70.8mpg on a full tank of fuel earlier this summer by driving sensibly (no interstate driving - that pulls the mileage down). The body, electronics, and interior are holding up great. The only real issue I have is paint coming off of the hubcaps - that is a very minor issue. It'll be a sad day when I have to part with this pokey gas saver, but that won't be for another year. Maybe by then I'll have replaced the brakes for the first time.*** Update 03/2023 ***I'm on my last few days with the Ioniq. It has never let me down, I feel the battery pack is still as good as the day I got it, and it has been a very economical to operate car. I have 156K miles and the new owner is excited to buy it. Final thoughts: The headlights are terrible. Over the past winter, I cringe to drive at night. I probably should have gone with aftermarket headlights. The body has held up well except for the plastic wheel covers. Everything still works and I still have decent tread life on my second set of tires. Brakes have never been replaced and the last service I had, the technician said they "look like new". Not sure if I believe that. Farewell old friend, we will meet again (because it was sold to a co-worker). The End.
