Hyundai Ioniq hybrid problems

The Hyundai Ioniq is a compact five-door liftback manufactured and marketed by Hyundai. The nameplate Ioniq is a portmanteau of ion and unique. It is marketed as the first Hyundai automobile to be offered without a standard internal combustion engine, but rather sold in hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and all-electric variants.
The Ioniq Hybrid debuted in South Korea in January 2016, with all three variants debuting at 2016 Geneva and New York auto shows. The hybrid variant launched in its home market in February 2016, followed by the electric model in July 2016. The plug-in hybrid version followed in February 2017.
From its first model year (2017) through the 2019 model year, the Ioniq Electric had been the EPA's most efficient vehicle with a rated fuel economy of 136 miles per gallon gasoline equivalent (24.8 kWh/100 mi; 15.4 kWh/100 km). The Ioniq Blue Hybrid version has been rated at 4.1 L/100 km (58 mpg‑US), making it the most fuel-efficient hybrid vehicle to be mass-produced.
Following its discontinuation in South Korea in 2021, production of the Ioniq ended in July 2022 in favour of battery electric lineup of Ioniq-badged models starting from the Ioniq 5 hatchback and Ioniq 6 sedan with Ioniq 7 to follow.

Common Hyundai Ioniq hybrid problems
Based on complaints from owners of the Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid, several common problems have been reported:
- Risk of Power Relay Fire:
- There have been instances where certain Ioniq models may suffer from a faulty power relay that could, under extreme circumstances, pose a fire risk. To mitigate this, Hyundai dealers are replacing the power relay and inspecting the power cable and relay assembly for any damage, ensuring the safety of the vehicle.
- Engine Problems:
- Owners have reported intermittent engine issues, such as the engine warning light coming on along with messages like "check hybrid system." These problems were traced back to issues with the hybrid engines communicating with each other, leading to performance disruptions. Additionally, some owners have faced difficulties with the speakers intermittently not working, requiring resets or temporary fixes.
- Suspension Issues:
- Complaints have surfaced regarding repetitive suspension problems, column shaft replacements, and even transmission replacements. Owners have expressed dissatisfaction with the need for multiple warranty repairs due to various issues like defective shocks, speakers, steering wheel column, and transmissions, impacting the driving experience and safety concerns.
These reported problems highlight the importance of thorough inspections and maintenance checks when considering or owning a Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid. Addressing these issues promptly can help ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle, providing a smoother driving experience for owners.

- Summary: The contact owns a 2017 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid. The contact stated while driving 20 MPH, the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle lurched forward and then stalled. The contact was able to pull over to the side of the road. The vehicle failed to restart and was towed to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the main power relay assembly had overheated, and the main power relay fuse was blown. The mechanic determined that the main power relay assembly and the fuse needed to be replaced. The mechanic determined that the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V459000 (Hybrid Propulsion System). The vehicle was then towed to the dealer for the recall repair; however, the dealer informed the contact that the recall repair was not necessary, and that the picture of the main power relay part would be sent to the manufacturer. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was opened. The manufacturer contacted the dealer regarding the recall repair. The dealer then informed the contact that the recall repair was performed per the manufacturer's instructions. The contact was later informed by the dealer that the recall repair had not been performed and only the picture of the main power relay part had been sent to the manufacturer. The manufacturer was contacted and informed the contact that they had not received a proof of the service that the dealer had performed on the vehicle. The vehicle was towed back to the independent mechanic, where it was confirmed that the recall repair had not been performed on the vehicle. The mechanic informed the contact that the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V459000 (Hybrid Propulsion System). The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 140,000. - Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Integrated Brake Accuation Unit failed per dealer repair location. Codes indicated on attached repair invoice receipt. (Document is Uploaded). This was a very expensive repair. Per dealer service advisor and technician they had never seen this before. 2 brake lights on the dash indicated major brake failure. The vehicle was immediately taken to the dealer for repair. See additional details regarding concern, cause. correction, and parts replaced on invoice. If this had not been repaired immediately, this could have put others at risk and caused an accident. Although there are several internet references to brake problems with this model of Hundai Ioniq Hybrid, there are no recalls. The powertrain and engine are warrantied for 100K miles and the batteries have an original lifetime owner warranty. Due to the critical nature of a braking system, I believe braking systems on hybrids for this part should have a lifetime warranty. I want to make it clear that parts that wear out due to use for example brake pads, rotors, master cylinder etc. are not what I am referencing. Since the integrated brake accuation unit is a part commonly seen on hybrid products, I think this a part that warrants investigation and recall. This investigation may go beyond the Hyndai hybrid products. Due to the expense of the repair, I believe this repair could put the owners of all hybrid auto products at risk.

- Summary: My lcd screen constantly goes black. A couple times the steering wheel locked the wipers and washer fluid went off at the same time. I had to hit the brakes and power the car on and off to reset it while making a turn. When having my window motor replaced for the SECOND time my dash where the speed is at all when black while driving on the freeway. I had to pull over and restart the car. My paint and my clear coat is separating on my trunk. It looks white not oxidation just separating and white. My driver side door button to lock the car kept getting stuck and was locking and unlocking. this left the possibilities of my car getting stolen from the door lock and the window motor leaving my window half down. My safety and the safety of others is obviously at risk with the electrical malfunctions. My local dealership left my issue’s unresolved for currently FIVE months with little to no compensation. I guess the life of my family and everyone else on the road is only $420.

- Summary: I brought my Hyundai on November 18, 2022 to Huntington Hyundai at 1221 E. Jericho Tpke., for service to take care of a recall. My paperwork from Huntington Hyundai shows that recall 232 was performed. But in 2023 I began plans to move to Canada and to import my Hyundai into Canada. The Canadian registrar of imported vehicles told me that according to recall records, there is an outstanding recall on the vehicle. Recall 232! I learned from visiting a dealer in Buffalo New York that not Huntington Hyundai never applied to Hyundai USA for reimbursement for work performed on recall 232. Huntington Hyundai failed to even perform the recall that they stated they performed.

- Summary: My 2019 hyndai ioniq electrical system stopped working and results in the front door claiming that is not open. An internet search showed that this is common many hyundais and in particular the ioniq. The issue with this is 1) there is no way to know how bad this electrical issue, 2) since the door may or may not be open, the risk of the door opening while driving is present, and 3) all other notifications on my dash are no longer usable; i have no way of knowing fuel left, mpg, or any other safety warnings on the dash. Finally, the issue creates a constant beep that does not stop. This is a safety issue seeing as it is so loud, it makes being aware of the sounds around us nearly impossible to hear.

- Summary: I have received a couple of notices from Hyundai concerning a recall for my Hyundai. Here’s been my experience—called Motor World Hyundai (150 MotorWorld Dr Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702). I was told that they didn’t have any parts in but would call me when the parts are in. They insisted on getting my contact information and since have barraged me with sales calls, but no information on “the parts”. After a few weeks, my wife called again, they claimed they have no idea when parts will come in, this person did not ask her name, did not offer to check status, did not offer to call back. (by the way, we tried to buy a new Ioniq last year and while they kept asking us to “come in to test drive” (not sure what we were test driving because they said they didn’t have the car) So, no Ioniq purchase. Our next call was to Dickson City Hyundai, (1519 Scranton Carbondale Highway, Scranton, PA 18508). They indicated a lack of parts as well. We requested they order the parts. They indicated that they require that we go there first (about an hour away) to have the car inspected. If they determine that they should order the parts, then they’ll order them and we’ll have to come back to get them installed. So according to the recall letter, the situation is dangerous, we need a recall done, you’ve notified us more than once, but we apparently can’t get it done without a significant effort on our part. A Safety Recall has been issued on your 2017 Ioniq Hybrid/Plug-In Hybrid’s Power Relay Assembly (PRA). Recall 232 Remedy is Available This notice applies to your vehicle, VIN: KMHC05LC7HU030998 I tried to click on “make an appointment” and it goes to “Page can’t be found” So, I was so happy with my Hyundai I was going to buy another, no test drive, no shopping for other brands but no can do. Now I’m told that I need a recall, but no one is interested in doing it.

I'm so glad I finally got the car I wanted! It's amazing how efficient it is in the Los Angeles traffic, and I love that I can drive almost entirely on electric. The acceleration and brake regeneration are outstanding, and the intelligent cruise control is fantastic (although it can be a little scary at times). I have to admit, the electronic gearbox changes can be a bit rough, but overall I'm really happy with my Hyundai. Thanks for making such a great car!

In April 2019, I traded in my 2014 Accent GLS Hatchback 6-speed for a new Ioniq Hybrid Blue. I absolutely loved driving the Accent, but found the cargo space to be somewhat limiting at times, which was my main reason for the upgrade. So far, I have been blown away by the Ioniq. The car is incredibly comfortable, quiet, and easy to drive, and the mileage has been nothing short of amazing. I used to get about 5.5 L/100km in the Accent, but to date, I am averaging 4.0 L/100km with the Ioniq -- amazing considering the Ioniq is a considerably larger car than the Accent. On one particular trip across Toronto in the heart of rush hour, the dash display was showing 2.9 L/100km -- that's 81 miles per U.S. gallon! I was somewhat disappointed that the Blue trim did not include the cargo cover, and the price to buy the cover in Canada is insane, so I ordered one from a U.S. dealership close to the border. My only other complaints are that the stock radio does not sound very good, and I would have liked fog lights and a tachometer in the display, but these are minor gripes. I am surprised that I don't see more Ioniq (of any

Vehicle year: 2017
I recently purchased an Ioniq and took it on a two-week road trip with my wife and our 50+ pound luggage. We traveled from central Florida to North Carolina, then up over the mountains of Virginia and Kentucky to Lexington. From there, we drove to Western PA before heading back to North Carolina and finally back to Florida. We covered a total of 2,961.6 miles and used only 56.016 gallons of gas, averaging an impressive 52.87mpg. The best average on our trip was from Kentucky to PA (633.1 miles) at 56.59mpg. The next best was PA to NC (661.5 miles) at 53.128mpg. Despite the terrain we traveled, the load we had in the vehicle, and 85% interstate driving at speeds of 65-70 mph, we were very pleased with the gas mileage. The Ioniq never felt underpowered and we were able to keep up with traffic, even in the mountains.I read the latest Consumer Report, and I can't believe it rated the Ford C-Max over the Ioniq. The 2 C-Maxs, that I previously owned, had less cargo space, lousy gas mileage (42mpg average), and uncomfortable seats. During interstate driving I had to constantly fiddle with the steering wheel on the C-Max to keep it on a straight path.

Vehicle year: 2021
Hey there! It's been a year since my initial review and overall, I'm much happier with my 2019 Ioniq Limited. I haven't had any problems since the one below (whew!). The only disappointment I have is the low MPG in winter. I understand that a hybrid will lose some efficiency in colder temperatures, but when temps are between -20 & 30, I'm only getting high 30's to mid 40's. However, summer MPG is awesome and at times I'm exceeding the Max for a Limited (57 MPG!). I have experienced some noticeable slipping when the transmission shifts, but it doesn't happen often and otherwise seems strong. As a high miles driver, after a year, I have about 42k miles on it. Seems to be going good, I will drive it until the wheels fall off! I had a 2019 Ioniq Select but decided to trade up to a 2019 Ioniq Limited. I drove it for 4 days and 468 miles, but unfortunately had to call Hyundai Roadside Assistance because it wouldn't start. Bluelink showed

I really appreciate the value that the SEL model offers. While I owned a 2017 Prius and enjoyed it, I have to say that the Ioniq is a great car overall. The hybrid gauge layout and braking regeneration are better, and the car has a fun, sporty feel to it. However, I did notice that the suspension is a bit rough and there is quite a bit of road noise, especially on the rough roads in Los Angeles. Despite these minor issues, I was able to purchase the Ioniq for 5k less than the Prius, which is very impressive. The only other thing I wish it had were fog lights, but that's a minor detail. Overall, I'm averaging roughly 47 mpg city and am very happy with my purchase.

I am disappointed that both the 2019 SEL and 2020 Limited models required major work before reaching 30,000 miles, despite financing around $64,000. However, I am grateful for the comfortable ride and efficiency of the car. It has taken me to various destinations, including Florida, Wisconsin, Tennessee, the coast, and the mountains. The car is stylish, well-built, and solid. It is also well-appointed and has great features such as a sound system, ApplePlay, and adaptive cruise control. Although I have had some issues with the transmission and fuel injector, I appreciate the great customer service from the dealership. I hope the car lasts through the warranty and financing period. For background, I have owned three hybrids previously and enjoyed them very much. After researching and price shopping, I chose to purchase the 2019 Hyundai Ioniq SEL, which had excellent rebates and came with a 100,000 mile powertrain warranty and a lifetime warranty on the hybrid battery. I brought up my concerns to a service advisor once again, and they kindly agreed to resurface the rotors. After the rotors were resurfaced, I requested that they take the car for a test drive and decelerate from 60 to 40 mph, and let me know what they heard. They performed the test as I described and determined that there was a problem. Although they weren't sure if it was the hybrid system or the transmission, my car was in their shop for two weeks (give or take a day), and the transmission was replaced under warranty. I was pleasantly surprised when Hyundai corporate reached out to me to ensure that I was satisfied with the service that the dealership was providing, and that I was still satisfied with my car. The great service at my Hyundai dealership (Johnson Hyundai in Cary, NC) did their best to bridge the gap between what I was sold and what I received. Although Hyundai declined to offer an extension on the warranty, I received a response from corporate after a lengthy delay in responses on their part. Since I did not respond to them within 48 hours of the receipt of their e-mail, they deemed the case closed. In conclusion, I cannot recommend this car to anyone in good faith. It will have to make it to 100,000 miles without so much as a misfire for me to be able to recommend it. The car has great features and the efficiency is the best in the class, but there's a reason that Hyundai priced it so low and offered incentives. Live and learn. Here's hoping that the little car improves with age, and I am once again satisfied with my purchase...However, I have only been able to establish a first-name basis with the service department and dealership managers so far.

I test drove this car and I found the rear visibility to be quite uncomfortable, especially through the rear window, which was too small for my taste and had that wide bar going through the middle of it. It is impossible to back up without using the camera. However, I believe that this car could be made safer by addressing the blind spots.

I purchased a 2017 Ioniq, the first one sold in New Mexico. Unfortunately, after two years, the car stopped working and has been in and out of the shop for over four months. Despite replacing everything, the issue remains unresolved. While this has been a frustrating experience, I have been working with a case manager from the national office who has been helpful in paying for my rental. Although the car was in the shop for almost a month, I was able to drive it to dinner and back without any issues. While I understand the concerns about safety, I am confident that the issue will be resolved soon. I appreciate Hyundai's efforts to address the issue and value their commitment to customer satisfaction. While this has been a challenging experience, I remain optimistic that the car will be fully operational soon. Thank you for your understanding.

Despite experiencing three major malfunctions within the first three months of owning my brand new vehicle, I am pleased to report that I have not had any further issues since reaching 19,500 miles. I continue to achieve impressive gas mileage of 55-60 mpg in warm weather and 40-45 mpg in cold weather. While I am concerned about the lack of a spare tire, I am confident in the reliability of my vehicle. It is unfortunate that I had a negative experience with Hyundai's customer service during the first few months of ownership, but I am satisfied with the performance of my car overall.
