1996 Infiniti Q45 problems

infiniti logo

The Infiniti Q45 is a full-size luxury sedan manufactured by Nissan for its Infiniti brand, spanning model years 1989-2006 and three design generations.

The first generation Q45 (1989–1999) was based on the Nissan President; the second generation (1997–2000) and third generation (2002–2006) were based on Nissan's JDM Nissan Cima. Marketing of the Q45 ended after MY 2006.

First generation (G50; 1989–1996)

The first generation Q45 came to market in 1989 as a 1990 model with a high-output 4.5 L VH45DE DOHC 32V V8 engine rated at 278 hp (207 kW) and 292 lb⋅ft (396 N⋅m) in North American trim. All Q45s included a viscous limited-slip differential and a multi-link suspension at the front and rear. At launch, the US$38,000 (equivalent to $93,000 in 2023) sedan had a single option, the Touring Package, which added Nissan's Super HICAS four-wheel steering system, a decklid spoiler, and alloy wheels.

In Japan, it was marketed as the Nissan Infiniti Q45, and was exclusive to Nissan Prince Store locations, as its platform twin the President was exclusive to Nissan Store locations. The G50 chassis continued in production in Japan until 2002 as the President in both regular and extended wheelbase versions. The Japanese version had many options that never appeared on the North American G50.

The contemporary upstart luxury marque Lexus (Toyota) had managed to challenge the establish dominance of European full-size luxury cars with the LS 400, so the Q45 seemed poised for similar success with comparable specifications and price to the LS 400 while featuring more emphasis upon handling. However, the Q45 did not achieve similar sales volumes, which was attributed to the car's unconventional styling, particularly the grille and lack of interior woodgrain or chrome trim. There was also an unusual advertising campaign which did not include actual photos or information about the car. By 1995, the price had risen to US$54,000 (equivalent to $108,000 in 2023), slowing sales.

In 1993 the Infiniti brand was launched in Australia with the sole model on offer being the Q45. With a price of A$140,000, the Q45 sold poorly and the brand was subsequently withdrawn from the market in 1996.

Common 1996 Infiniti Q45 problems

The Infiniti Q45, a luxury sedan produced by Nissan's luxury division, has been praised for its performance and design. However, like any vehicle, it has faced its fair share of issues throughout the years, particularly in the 1996 model. Here are some of the most common problems reported by owners of the 1996 Infiniti Q45:

  • Drivability Issues Due to Failing Crankshaft Angle Sensor: One of the most common problems with the 1996 Infiniti Q45 is drivability issues caused by a failing crankshaft angle sensor. This issue can lead to rough idling and stalling, making the vehicle difficult to drive. The crankshaft angle sensor is responsible for providing information about the crankshaft's position and speed to the engine control module (ECM). When this sensor fails, the ECM may not be able to properly control the engine, resulting in drivability issues.
  • Quality and Reliability Issues: The 1996 Infiniti Q45 has faced criticism for its quality and reliability issues. Some owners have reported problems with cheaply made controls and parts that are not appropriate for a car of its class. These issues can affect the overall driving experience and lead to additional maintenance costs.
  • Excessive Depreciation: The 1996 Infiniti Q45 has been known to suffer from excessive depreciation, which can be attributed to poor reliability, high maintenance costs, and high replacement part costs for the first-generation Q45.
  • Limited Rear Leg Room: Some owners have reported that the 1996 Infiniti Q45 has substantially less rear leg room compared to other luxury sedans in its class, which can affect passenger comfort during long drives.
  • Complex Powertrain: The 1996 Infiniti Q45 features a complex powertrain, with an aluminum V-8 engine rated at 278 horsepower and 292 pound-feet of torque, four-speed automatic transmission, and computer-controlled electronic fuel injection. While this powertrain offers impressive performance, it can also be prone to issues, particularly if not properly maintained.

It is important to note that not all 1996 Infiniti Q45s will experience these issues, and many owners have reported positive experiences with the vehicle. However, these common problems are worth considering when purchasing or maintaining a 1996 Infiniti Q45.

Negative 1996 Infiniti Q45 car reviews

I bought this car as a surprise for my wife and the first two months were great. However, we did encounter some issues with the car such as having to replace the valve cover gaskets which took two weeks and cost $900. We also had to replace the gas cap twice within 10,000 miles of ownership due to stalling issues. Additionally, we experienced some electrical problems, but the final issue was with the fuel injection. Unfortunately, we decided to get rid of the car at that point.

You have a 1996 Q45 with about 90,000 miles on it, which means it has averaged a little over 10,000 miles a year. The car is really nice, offering an excellent combination of luxury and power. It has an excellent, though somewhat 'soft' ride, great interior room and comfort, and best of all, real get-up-and-go under the hood. With a V8 engine, you can go 0-60 in a snap without so much as a second thought. Additionally, it has been very reliable; other than gas/oil and brakes, the only maintenance done has been the 60K checkup to change belts etc. This car is definitely the best of all the cars you've owned.

The Infiniti Q45 is such a blast to drive! With plenty of horsepower to get you where you need to go and great brakes to stop you when you get there, it's the perfect luxury sedan for anyone who loves to hit the road.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share a little story about my car. Back in 1998, I was lucky enough to find this amazing car at an auction. It only had 25,000 miles on it and I saved a whopping $8,000 compared to what dealers were selling similar cars for. I even did some research and compared the VIN numbers to cars at my local Infinity dealer! Since then, this car has been an absolute joy to own. Unfortunately, my husband can no longer drive and we recently purchased a new Q45, so we no longer have a need for two cars. Even though I'm sad to see it go, I'm excited for someone else to enjoy it as much as I have.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Infiniti that I purchased new in Atlanta. I paid $40,000 for the car, which had an MSRP of $48,395. I have to say, the car has been amazing! The paint still looks brand new and mechanically, it's been a 5-star experience. It's also been a lot of fun to drive! The only thing I wish is that traction control had been available in Atlanta, as I now live in the Boston area. I did find that the dealership situation in Atlanta was far better than it is in Boston. I did have a bit of a hiccup with the cost of the 60k service, which I think was a bit high based on Edmunds' information. Overall though, I'm really happy with my purchase!

This is the first large vehicle I've owned, other than an old Mercury Marquis. I do have one misgiving, which is a sense of guilt about its poor mileage. My previous car was a Toyota Camry, which gave me better than 35 mpg.
