1999 Ford Heavy duty problems

The Ford Super Duty (also known as the Ford F-Series Super Duty) is a series of heavy-duty pickup trucks produced by the Ford Motor Company since the 1999 model year. Slotted above the consumer-oriented Ford F-150, the Super Duty trucks are an expansion of the Ford F-Series range, from F-250 to the F-600. The F-250 through F-450 are offered as pickup trucks, while the F-350 through F-600 are offered as chassis cabs.

Rather than adapting the lighter-duty F-150 truck for heavier use, Super Duty trucks have been designed as a dedicated variant of the Ford F-Series. The heavier-duty chassis components allow for heavier payloads and towing capabilities. With a GVWR over 8,500 lb (3,900 kg), Super Duty pickups are Class 2 and 3 trucks, while chassis-cab trucks are offered in Classes 3, 4, 5, and 6. The model line also offers Ford Power Stroke V8 diesel engines as an option.

Ford also offers a medium-duty version of the F-Series (F-650 and F-750), which is sometimes branded as the Super Duty, but is another chassis variant. The Super Duty pickup truck also served as the basis for the Ford Excursion full-sized SUV.

The Super Duty trucks and chassis-cabs are assembled at the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky, and at Ohio Assembly in Avon Lake, Ohio. Prior to 2016, medium-duty trucks were assembled in Mexico under the Blue Diamond Truck joint venture with Navistar International.

Common 1999 Ford Heavy duty problems

Based on the sources provided, here are some common problems with the Ford Super Duty 1999 model based on complaints from owners:

  • Vacuum Leak and Hubs: Early Ford Super Duty trucks were equipped with vacuum-assisted hubs that were prone to issues like leaking or dry-rotted vacuum lines and damaged hub actuators. Upgrading to Warn Hubs and ensuring vacuum lines are in good shape can help address these problems.
  • Front Unit Bearings: The factory non-serviceable unit bearings in the front axle have a limited life cycle, especially when paired with big tires. Signs of a bad unit bearing include major camber changes in the wheel. Replacing worn parts with factory-style replacements or upgrading to a Dynatrac Free-Spin Kit can resolve this issue.
  • Transmission Slipping: The Ford 4R100 transmission, used in the 1999 Ford Super Duty, has been reported to experience slipping gears, which can lead to the need for a complete transmission replacement. This issue can be caused by a poorly aligned DTR sensor, a blown fuse, a defective solenoid, or a wiring short.
  • Transmission Shifting In and Out of Gear: Owners of the 2002 Ford Expedition, equipped with the 4R100 transmission, have reported problems with the transmission shifting erratically in and out of gear while driving. This issue can result in the vehicle shifting out of gear unexpectedly, potentially causing safety concerns on the road.
  • Transmission Will Not Shift Properly: Another common complaint is that the 4R100 transmission in the 2003 Ford Excursion may not shift properly, particularly having trouble shifting into or operating in reverse. This issue can be caused by defective calipers or a malfunctioning IAC valve.

These problems highlight some of the key issues that owners of the Ford Super Duty 1999 model have faced, ranging from engine-related concerns to transmission issues. Addressing these problems promptly and with the appropriate solutions can help maintain the performance and reliability of these vehicles.
