The Toyota RAV4 (Japanese: トヨタ・RAV4, Hepburn: Toyota Ravufō) is a compact crossover SUV produced by the Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota. It is known for starting the wave of compact crossovers.

It made its debut in Japan and Europe in 1994, and in North America in 1995, being launched in January 1996. The vehicle was designed for consumers wanting a vehicle that had most of the benefits of SUVs, such as increased cargo room, higher visibility, and the option of full-time four-wheel drive, along with the manoeuvrability and fuel economy of a compact car. The vehicle's name is an abbreviation of "Recreational Active Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", or "Robust Accurate Vehicle with 4-wheel drive", although not all models come equipped with the four-wheel drive system.

For the third-generation model, Toyota offered both short- and long-wheelbase versions of the RAV4. Short-wheelbase versions were sold in Japan and Europe; long-wheelbase versions in Australia and North America. Toyota of Japan also sold the longer-wheelbase version as the Toyota Vanguard (Japanese: トヨタ・ヴァンガード, Hepburn: Toyota Vangādo) at Toyopet Store dealership chain from 2005 through 2016. RAV4 for the Japanese market were sold at two different Toyota dealership chains, Corolla Store and Netz.

In 2019, the RAV4 was the best-selling SUV of any type in the world, and the fourth best-selling passenger car overall. North America is the largest market, with 535,000 units sold in 2019, followed by Europe (133,000) and China (127,000). By February 2020, a total of 10 million RAV4s had been sold globally.

  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: JTMEB3FV4RD
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Main infotainment display doesn't switch to night/dark screen even though the settings is set to automatic mode. As a result the display is extremely bright especially in dark and rural areas blinding the driver. It caused me to hit a curb and blow a tire. I went to a Toyota dealer 3 times but they didn't not fix it. This occured on August 13 2024 at around 9:30 PM. I filled a complaint with TOYOTA but every time I called they promise they will address the issue but it's now 2 months and they have not done anything. I am not sure what to do next but the display remains an issue .

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-01
  • VIN: JTMFB3FV0RD
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: Panoramic moon roof exploded while driving with no impact to the glass. The explosion sounded like a gun shot inside the car. This sudden explosive noise put the driver, and all other vehicles on the road, in danger due to the panicked reflex of the driver. Upon inspection, it's evident that the glass shattered along all 4 edges rather than from a single point of impact. This would indicate an issue with the glass, the installation, or both. Vehicle was taken to dealer and customer was told it would not be covered under warranty.

At times banging is loud enough to sound like vehicle hit something. No issues with braking currently. Not sure if noise is from ABS but sound is coming from front and back. Toyota inspected vehicle and said sound is the ABS activating..."totally normal for newer hybrids and no fix at this time...test drove other 2024 Rav4 Primes and all had same noise". TAS#242180433. No accident/incident to report at this time, however noise is loud enough to cause uneasiness while driving.

As I was pulling into a parking space at work, going less than 5 mph, i took my foot off the accelerator and coasting in while intending to brake, stop, and turn the car off. Suddenly, the car accelerated forward quickly, propelling the car over a tall curb, over a small grassy area, and onto the open parking lot. I subsequently applied the break, the car stopped, I drove back to the same spot. and was able to park and turn the car off. A report was filed with Toyota, completing an unintended acceleration form (UA), and Toyota filed TAS case number 24212013.

Negative 2024 Toyota Rav4 prime car reviews

Hi there! I just wanted to let you know that I was only provided with one key when I purchased my vehicle and unfortunately, when I requested to return it, I was refused. I'm feeling a bit frustrated about the situation, especially since I've been told that there are no more Toyotas available for me to purchase in my lifetime.

  2. Jamel Daniel 2024-09-11

Hi there! I noticed that the spring lid on the female heater isn't sealing properly, which can cause snow to accumulate inside. I understand that it can be difficult to clean in cold temperatures. Just a heads up, using de-icer spray could potentially cause a fire if you plug in the male end. Stay safe!

  3. Deondre Torp 2024-06-06

The vehicle's ride quality leaves much to be desired. The stiff and crashy damping makes you feel every bump through your spine, while every dip, hump, and kink unsettles you in your seat. The steering also seems to jerk across the road instead of initiating a turn smoothly. Overall, it's not a pleasant experience for passengers. In comparison, my well-driven 2000s BMW far exceeds the ride quality of this vehicle.

  4. Cleveland Senger 2024-02-12

I recently purchased the 2022 Rav4 prime and initially loved everything about it. Unfortunately, last week I encountered an issue with a check engine light. Upon taking it to the dealership, I discovered that some wires had been chewed off by mice. It turns out that the wires are soy-based, which is a material that mice are attracted to and tend to chew on. This has become a common problem and the repair cost is around $5000. While I am disappointed with this design flaw, I hope that Toyota will address this issue soon. In the meantime, I suggest considering other options before making a purchase. Thank you for your understanding.

I have tried both the 2022 and 2023 models, as well as several trim lines. Unfortunately, as someone who is 6'1'', I have found that the top of my legs rub against the steering wheel and the bottom of my thighs won't rest on the seat, no matter how far back I adjust it. This has resulted in cramped legs and hip pain on long trips. The driver legroom is only rated at 41'', which I find to be quite inadequate. As a result, I have decided to look for other options such as the Subaru Outback, which I have found to be a better fit for me.

Positive 2024 Toyota Rav4 prime car reviews

Congratulations on your new 2024 RAV4 Prime! I'm thrilled to hear that you're enjoying it so much. While there may have been a bit of a learning curve with all the new electronics, it sounds like the all-electric mode is incredible and the hybrid mode is very efficient and seamless. It's great to hear that you and your wife find the front seats well-fitting and comfortable, and that the interior is nicely done. The upgrades of the XSE model are a nice touch too. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

  2. Alexie Turner 2025-02-11

I bought my 2022 SE just over a year ago and have driven 15000 miles so far. I absolutely love my Prime! It's spacious on the inside without being too big, and it's sportier than many other CUVs. The ride is smooth and it has plenty of power. The transition between EV mode and HV mode is seamless, making for a comfortable and enjoyable driving experience. Best of all, it's easy on gas, which is great for both the environment and my wallet. I charge it every night with minimal impact on the environment or my finances, thanks to our solar-powered home. Overall, it's a fantastic car that I would highly recommend. The only downside is the inflated price, but luckily prices are coming down now that the tax incentive is going away. While the battery may be a major expense down the road, it's supposed to have a pretty long lifespan. Right now, I can drive over 50 miles on EV alone, depending on driving conditions including speed, hills climbed, use of air conditioner/heat, and temperature. It remains to be seen how that range will change over time, but I'm optimistic. While the AC depletes the battery range slightly, using the heat has a huge effect, so I try to use the heated steering wheel and forego the heat as much as possible in order to make it to work and home on a single charge. Unfortunately, during winter, my range dips to about 33 miles if I want the comfort of a nice warm car to and from work. It seems that this car may be best suited for mild climates. During warm weather, the dash usually tells me I have 56 miles EV when I start up, during winter it usually starts around 50. I could probably increase my range if I were to keep my speed around 40 and avoid hills. I've learned to switch out of EV when on the interstate and when climbing mountains, as they are a huge drain on the battery. There are so many things I love about this car, from cutting down on CO2 emissions to saving over $1,000/year on gas. It even starts conversations and lets people know that better fuel economy is an option! The car is spacious and comfortable for family trips, and it has a sharp design (although it may look a bit robotic). There are a few things that I'm not particularly fond of, such as the fact that the average miles per gallon shown on the dash only goes up to 99.9. It would be great if Toyota could improve this feature, especially since it's an EV and my mileage is way over 100mpg. Additionally, the ICE motor can be quite loud at times, and there can be what seems like an excessive amount of valve clacking when it first starts up. The cloth interior seems a bit cheap, and I'm not a fan of the red stitching. The heated steering wheel button is in a weird, hard-to-find place, and it would make more sense to put it on the steering wheel or beside the heated seat button. The dash is a little busy, and I wish there was a physical on/off button for the entertainment display (as it is, you have to navigate through 3 screens to get to it). The automatic trunk open button is also hard to locate on the trunk. The spaceship sound it makes at low speeds is a bit weird, and I'm not sure why there are dual exhausts when it's supposed to be an eco-friendly car. Most annoying of all, there is no way to disable the seatbelt warning sound! Although I am an avid seatbelt wearer, I live on a farm with multiple gates that must be opened and closed on the driveway. That means I have to put on and take off my seatbelt three times as I creep down the gravel driveway to get to the road, or else listen to the incessant beeping. The tires that came with the car are not great in wet conditions, and after a year, it looks like they will need to be replaced soon. I recently learned that most tires are not recommended for EVs due to friction, weight, and efficiency. I'm hoping to find a better tire that doesn't compromise efficiency too much. Overall, I'm happy with the car, but I would have been a lot happier if I hadn't paid over MSRP just to get my hands on one. It came with a luxury price tag, but it is not a luxury car. It's just a really cool car that has to be plugged in every night. Before you buy, consider these things:This car may not be the best fit for cold climates as the heat can use up the EV quickly. Additionally, it may not be ideal for high-speed interstate driving as this can also use up the EV quickly. It is important to have a regular schedule and a place to charge the car daily, as it takes approximately 11 hours to charge with a regular charger. It is also important to consider whether your commute falls within the EV range or if you will need to use gas every day. The cost to charge the car will vary by location, so it is worth researching this beforehand. If you have solar panels, this can be a plus. Depending on your individual situation, the regular hybrid model may be a more suitable option.

  3. Griffin Osinski 2025-02-03

The front seats are incredibly comfortable and supportive, allowing me to drive over 500 miles without stopping. The car handles very well, even on rural roads with a 65mph speed limit. I was able to set the cruise with lane assist and take a 90 degree fast turn with a suggested speed of 35mph with ease. I was impressed with how well the car performed. I strongly disagree with the Edmunds reviewer's opinion and believe that the RAV4 Prime is the best PHEV on the market. It has the highest electric range and the best mileage of all PHEVs, especially for its size. The XSE model already has enough features and does not require the Premium package. It is the fastest car Toyota makes and has the same mpg as the regular Hybrid despite having much more power. Overall, I believe that the RAV4 Prime is the best car Toyota makes.

  4. Aidan Strosin 2025-01-22

This is our second RAV4 Hybrid but this one is a Prime. It's incredibly quick and smooth, and the ride feels like a luxury car - even over frost heaves! Plus, I love that I can charge it at home and work and not use any gas all week.

  5. Arnulfo Mayert 2024-09-19

I've been driving the 23 R4 Prime SE for over 6 months now, covering close to 10K miles, and I'm happy to report that I haven't had any problems at all. The car is very practical and comes with quite a few thoughtful features. As senior citizens, my spouse and I find it easy to get in and out of the car, and our toddler grandchild's car seat fits perfectly. I use a 110 outlet in my driveway to charge the car overnight, and it takes approximately 10 1/2 hours for a full charge. I drive efficiently, and the 302 horsepower is very handy and impressive when passing or merging. I plan to install a level 2 charger eventually to take full advantage of an electric discount from midnight to 8AM, which will take only 3 1/2 hours to charge fully. If you're new to PHEVs, there is always a learning curve, but the Prime Facebook Group can be quite helpful. I drive in EV mode for local trips and HV mode on highways over 40 miles per hour. I estimate that I drive 35% locally and the rest on highways. If you drive 75% or more on highways, then a PHEV may be less practical. With a full tank of gas and regular charging, the car has a range of over 600 miles. Although New York State has a long way to go in charging infrastructure compared to California and Massachusetts, I have no complaints about the handling. The steering is a little light, but it's an SUV, not a sports car. If you value efficiency and your driving/lifestyle style fits what this car has to offer, I'm sure you would be pleased. I recommend the R4 Prime without hesitation.
