2020 Kia Telluride problems

The Kia Telluride is a mid-size crossover SUV with three-row seating manufactured and marketed by Kia since 2019. Positioned above the smaller Sorento, the Telluride was previewed as a concept car in 2016, with the production model debuting in the spring of 2019 as a 2020 model. It shares components and specifications with its sister model, the Hyundai Palisade, including its engine, transmission, and wheelbase. Named after the town of Telluride, Colorado, the Telluride is the largest vehicle Kia has manufactured in the United States.
Overview
The production version of the Telluride was launched at the 2019 North American International Auto Show in January. Previously, the Telluride was displayed as a customized version inspired by fashion designer Brandon Maxwell's Texas-inspired collection, at New York Fashion Week in September 2018. The overall design is similar to the 2016 concept except for the front end which was completely redesigned.
The Telluride is the first Kia designed specifically for the US market, with the design work handled at the Kia Design Center in Irvine, California. The production version Telluride is powered by a 3.8-liter Lambda II V6 Atkinson cycle gasoline engine rated at 291 hp (295 PS; 217 kW) and 355 N⋅m (36.2 kg⋅m; 262 lb⋅ft), paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and either front-wheel drive or all-wheel-drive.
The Telluride features four drive modes – Smart, Eco, Sport and Comfort. Snow and AWD Lock modes are also available for specific driving conditions, and the on-demand electro-hydraulic AWD system with multi-plate clutch plate constantly redistributes power to both axles. In Eco and Smart modes, power is completely routed to the front wheels, whereas Sport mode splits the power down to 65 percent front, 35 percent rear.
The standard towing rate for this SUV is rated at 5,000 pounds (2,300 kg), and it also features the optional self-levelling rear suspension where the ride height is automatically calibrated depending on vehicle load to optimise control and stability.
The Telluride is not marketed in South Korea as it is only produced in the United States, whereas its Hyundai counterpart, the Korean-built Palisade is marketed there instead. Exports from the West Point, Georgia plant to the Middle East started in February 2019. Kia limited exports of the Telluride to around 3,000 units annually.

Since this I have had several more chips and the crack now runs all the way across the glass and extends up and down

- Summary: Paint peeling from 2020 Kia Telluride. It seems to be a known issue with many Kia Telluride owners experiencing the same paint defects. This is a serious quality issue, I've had many vehicles for 10+ years and never experienced the issues I'm having with this car. The car has under 50000 miles and for it to be peeling like this seems to be a manufacture defect. Kia has refused to fix the issue as they claim its not under warranty.

- Summary: We contacted Kia US after taking the Kia Telluride to a Kia service station for an oil change. The service tech told us that they were not going to do an oil change because,”the Telluride was a ticking time bomb.” This was said in front of the Kia service Mgr.We were very nervous driving the vehicle because no one explained what that meant.Shortly after the service appointment, the Telluride’s engine caught on fire.We call Kia US that same day to open up a case.We explained all the issues we had with the Telluride (windshield issues, headlight issues, main display screen issues, luggage rack issues, sunroof, drive shaft, wiper fluid filter issues), to include the engine. After paying an attorney to provide all documents that Kia US requested from us, including every oil change receipt for the Telluride, Kia US only offered to only pay for the parts for the driveshaft/engine fire issues. To make matters worse, the Kia service department said that the 100+ parts needed to repair the engine, were on back order. Our Telluride’s engine caught fire in April and Kia US has done nothing for us, even though the issues are under 2 recalls. This is unacceptable for a manufacturer to ignore recalls, especially when it comes to the safety of people, families and children. We contacted Kia US for 6 months with no help from them. We sent registered/certified letters to Kia US executives, legal Dept, Kia Finance and the last communication from Kia US was that they are not doing anything for us- no repairs for the recalls, even though we mentioned the recalls associated with our Vin/Telluride. They are completely disregarding the entire situation. Since then, we have had to find another option for transportation since we have been without the Telluride for 6 months. Kia US needs to take back the Telluride and either provide us with a safe/working vehicle or reimburse us for what we have spent on the Telluride. Thank you for your assistance. Sincerely, [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-14
- VIN: 5XYP2DHC0LG
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: We purchased a new 2020 Kia telluride in late 2019. We purchased this vehicle because of its 100,000 mile warranty. We went the extra step and added the best extended warranty possible so we were covered for many miles and years. I have always done my own oil changes as I am a journeyman fitter and understand the mechanics of a vehicle. I kept every receipt from every oil and oil filter purchase for the last 5 years as well as a detailed log book. Around 75,000 miles we started noticing major oil consumption. Approximately 1 quart every months and then up to about a quart every 2 weeks. We also notice a huge loss in engine power and take off. My wife said she was having trouble pulling out onto hills and was very dangerous at intersections, because of the lack of power. We then took the Kia telluride to my main mechanic, he replaced all 6 spark plugs and said we should immediately take it to a dealer as it sounds like the timing chain maybe going bad. This was early August 2024. I made an appointment with Diehl Kia in hermitage the next day for [XXX]. After a few days the dealer called and said that they could not get the car to replicate the noise they heard when they brought it in. It sat for 2 weeks before they decided to open a claim with Kia customer service. Kia recommended they do an internal investigation at the customer cost which we approved. They said they had found some build up and Kia was requesting the oil change records which I promptly provided. Kia then recommended to do a compression test on the cylinders. Again at customer cost. Even though the vehicle has less than 100,000 miles and the warranty is still valid. We agreed to pay for the compression test as well. After a few more days the service associate called me and said that the compression test had passed to my surprise. A few more days went by and we really had no answers. After pressing the dealer for answer they finally told me that Kia was not accepting our service records.

SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-22
- VIN: 5XYP5DHC1LG
- Components: SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Vehicle began having issues around 60,000 miles. Stutters and slips between 2nd and 3rd gear. When on an incline the issue is much more prevalent. On a steep incline, the vehicle is like lurching it is so prevalent and it feels as though the vehicle is going to give up. Around 45 mph, the vehicle begins vibrating; as speeds increase, the shaking (left to right) becomes increasingly violent. At times, it feels as though the vehicle is going to shake off the road. The issues I primarily when accelerating, and when the gas pedal is released, the shaking slows almost to a stop. Tires, balance, and alignment checked multiple times over the course of the issue and tires are changed seasonally. Took to dealership multiple times to be told there was no issue with the vehicle and it was operating properly. Just over 100k miles, back at the dealership and there is suddenly an issue found. Was told at dealership that passenger side front axle inner race is damaged and needs replaced. Took vehicle to local mechanic since dealership had jerked us around so much over the issues, not repairing, keeping car for extended amounts of time without a loaner vehicle, etc. Local mechanic did a lot of research. This is a common complaint of the Telluride and Kia is aware but is not doing anything about it. Mechanics recreated issue immedately said rear driveshaft had movement it shouldn't and replaced. They also serviced the transfer case and transmission. There is a TSB issued on this, but research suggests that it is not resolving the problems and kia dealerships are not acknowledging the issue until out of warranty and TSB doesn't cover the repairs even though it is faulty manufacturing.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

- VIN: 5XYP64HC3LG
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The paint on my pearl white 2020 telluride is peeLing off in sheets in the roof. The car has less than 100,000 miles and should not be doing this. Multiple people including the ones in a lawsuit with kia have had this problem and it needs to be addressed!
STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-11
- VIN: 5XYP34HC6LG
- Components: STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The wind deflector/bug guard on the sunroof broke and pieces from the broken mechanism proceeded to lodge themselves throughout the track of the sunroof causing the entire track system to break/malfunction. There are several screws that were snapped from the plastic track, which then left the sunroof glass “bouncing” and unsecured on the car. If this was not noticed prior to hitting the highway or driving with any sort of speed I am confident the sunroof would have shattered causing a hazards for myself and children in the vehicle or flown off the car causing a hazard to others on the road. The car is currently at a KIA dealership being looked at, to which they suggested this because it’s becoming more and more “common”. Additionally it is not a cheap fix, quoted just under $4000 for parts and labor. Absolutely no warning lights or indicators stating the sunroof was “open” or malfunctioning. Even once it was no longer attached to the track/bracket system it was not triggering the light indicating it was open like it does normally and with all other doors/windows.
VISIBILITY,STRUCTURE,SEATS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-11
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- VIN: 5XYP6DHC1LG
- Components: VISIBILITY,STRUCTURE,SEATS
- Summary: Tonight I tried to open my sunroof for some fresh air while relaxing in my vehicle. My sunroof made some weird cracking noises and is jammed open. I only used my sunroof 2 to 3 times. However, it's in the stuck position and sounds like crushing glass when I try to open it. My rear right passenger folds down on its own. My grandson has been folded into the seat multiple times. I contact kia and got no resolution. This is dangerous. I went to retrieve my backpack from my backseat yesterday and when I set the sear back it made a auto sound, it slid completely forward hitting me in my face. The seat ejects by itself often and it a safety risk to my family and i. I checked kia forums only to find this is an huge issue and spoked about hundreds of times involving telluride and Sorento models. I'm afraid my sunroof glass with break.

- VIN: 5XYP34HC5LG
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: My 2020 Kia has peeling paint. I looked online and see that it's a big issue and theres even a class action lawsuit. Sites said to file a complaint here to document it. In 2022, the paint started peeling near my sunroof. I didn't do anything about it since it was a small area. It has now continued peeling to the point that I started looking at warranty information since it's obviously an issue with the paint...it peels off like nail polish. The warranty ended at 36,000 miles and I now have 50,000. The issue first started when I had 33,000 miles.
EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-26
- VIN: 5XYP34HC7LG

- Summary: The recall 24V148 regarding headlight High beam issue from Gebruary of thus year still has no remedy in order to fix the issue. It has been 6 months and the dealerships just say sorry we don't have any solution even though the recall associated with my car doesn't apply due to the headlamps being replaced with completely different ones already myself. I've owned an Audi A7 and Jeep Unlimited in the past, but I must say, this Kia is even nicer than both of them! I haven't had any issues with it and the comfort and ride are simply spectacular. I never thought a Kia could be this awesome, but Kia has really put together a great vehicle. I purchased it in March 2019 and have driven it over 20k miles from Florida to Georgia, Florida to Alabama, and daily driving throughout Florida. I've driven Honda, Nissan, Volvo, Hyundai, Subaru, Range Rover, and this Kia is my favorite. It has the best combination of looks, comfort, reliability, and price, making it the best deal out there. I bought the S version, which comes with a moon roof and electric seat. Trust me, do yourself a favor and consider this SUV. The whole family is comfortable thanks to the front and rear AC and heat control, and there are 8 or 9 plug-ins for phones or iPads. I can't say enough good things about this vehicle. My Jeep was $600 a month and my Audi was $1150 a month, but my Kia is only $350. You simply cannot go wrong with it!

I love this car! However, there is an electrical issue that the dealer has not been able to fix. Unfortunately, when the car sits for more than 3 days, it does not start. It has been at the dealer twice and is currently there since 12/9. They have replaced parts in the door but it still has an issue.

Congratulations on your new Telluride! It's great to hear that you are blown away by it. Kia has done an amazing job in designing and engineering this vehicle. It's always a tough decision when choosing between different cars, but it sounds like you made the right choice. The Telluride is definitely a winner in terms of ride, handling, smoothness, space and features. It's great to hear that you are enjoying it more than the RX350 and the Highlander. It's also impressive that you have owned 8 Toyotas in the last 30 years and still find the Telluride to be a true luxury car for thousands less than the competition. It's a testament to the quality and performance of the vehicle. Thank you for sharing your experience with us and we hope you continue to enjoy your Telluride for years to come!We took it on long trips and it never felt tiring. I would say the Telluride is better than a lot of other luxury vehicles. When I rented a Range Rover sport for a few days on my out of town trip, the Telluride was a lot better. I believe it can stand on its own against any other luxury SUV in its class. It's surprising that a lot of people still do not know about the Telluride.

For me, what really matters in a vehicle is how well it drives. And the Telluride definitely delivers on that front. I've been driving mine for over 6 weeks now and every time I get behind the wheel, I feel relaxed and at ease. Whether I'm cruising in comfort mode or zipping through traffic in sport mode, the ride is always smooth and enjoyable. And for those who have criticized the Telluride's acceleration, it's important to remember that it's a 3 row SUV and not equipped with a hemi engine. But if you switch to sport mode, you'll find that there's plenty of acceleration to satisfy your need for speed (and you'll get better gas mileage too!). Speaking of acceleration, a co-worker once challenged me to a race in her supped up Dodge Durango with a hemi engine. I declined, but she still wanted to show off and took off like a rocket. I called her afterwards and joked that she probably burned a gallon of gas over that half mile. She retorted that her car ate mine for lunch, but I replied that I prefer my car to be more like a dessert - something to be savored and enjoyed. And that's exactly what the Telluride is - a pleasure to drive. I particularly appreciate the responsiveness of the steering and the tight turning radius. And when it comes to comfort, the leather seats in the EX model are noticeably more comfortable and supportive than the pleather seats in the LX and S models. My teenage kids were the first to notice this during our test drive, and I have to agree with them. Overall, if you're looking for a vehicle that's a joy to drive, I highly recommend the Telluride.I haven't had the chance to compare the leather seats in my EX to the napa leather seats in the SX prestige model, but my parents have driven my Telluride and I've sat in the second row myself. I found the second row to be just as comfortable as the first, which is saying something because the ride quality in the first row is excellent. One of my favorite features is the ventilated front seats, which have been a lifesaver during the hot Florida summer. The infotainment system is user-friendly, with both a touchscreen and buttons. The Telluride offers a lot of features for the price, especially compared to other midsize SUVs. The safety features are top-notch, with blind spot detection being my favorite. The lane keeping control while in cruise control is advanced, although I prefer to have control of the steering wheel myself. The adaptive cruise control works well, with the car slowing down and speeding up as needed. The intercom feature is a fun addition, and the AC works well in all rows. There are plenty of USB ports for everyone to use their gadgets during the ride. Gas mileage has been good, with the on-board computer slightly exaggerating the numbers. Over the last 4 fill-ups, I recorded 24.5 and 22.1 mpg in mostly city driving, and 27.5 and 25.9 mpg in mostly highway driving.I think the lower numbers in both sets of mpg may reflect my use of sport mode a little more often than comfort mode during those tanks. As I mentioned earlier, you don't get the acceleration of a Dodge with a hemi engine, but you're also not burning a gallon of gas every time you kick in the hemi engine. Overall, I'm happy with the gas mileage so far.

Hi there! I was wondering if anyone else has experienced any discomfort while driving the EX model SUV? I've had mine for about 3 weeks now and I've noticed that my back starts to hurt after driving for 20 miles or so. Other than that, I absolutely love the vehicle! Have any of you had a similar issue?

I recently purchased a 2020 Kia Telluride SX AWD and initially, I was thrilled with its performance, value, safety features, looks, and price. However, after two months of use, I started experiencing some issues. For instance, I noticed that the stitching in the seat is coming apart, the transmission shifts down abruptly when coasting to a stop, and the tech screens go gray briefly and are becoming glitchy. Although I am disappointed with these issues, I am taking it in to the service department and hope to get them resolved soon. I am grateful that the car comes with a great warranty, which gives me peace of mind. While I am second-guessing my decision to purchase this car over the reliable Toyota Highlander, I am hopeful that the service department will be able to address these issues.

Hello! I just wanted to share that my car has only 280 miles on it and I've had a bit of trouble turning it on twice now. It seems like the battery might not be working properly. I took it to the dealer, but unfortunately they couldn't find anything wrong. I'm keeping track of every time I turn on the car, but it's still hard to prove that there's an issue. Overall, I really love the interior of the vehicle and I'm hoping to get this issue resolved soon, especially since it's happening at less than 300 miles!

Our radiator failed after just a week, and my wife and child were left stranded on the side of the freeway. Unfortunately, our experience with Kia customer service has been less than satisfactory. It seems that the dealer is unable to help and the main Kia customer service line is not much better. We are disappointed with the way we have been treated and regret our decision to purchase this car.

I purchased a SX Telluride in October 2019. Despite taking it to the dealership three times, the battery died four times on March 3rd, May 6th, August 10th, and September 8th. After the last visit, which lasted five days, the dealership charged me $75.00 for checking all the vehicle's systems, claiming they could not find a problem with the battery. However, on September 27th, 2020, the vehicle failed to start, and none of the interior lights came on. I am confident that this vehicle is a lemon and will take appropriate action to resolve this issue. I plan to reach out to every governmental agency I can find on Monday morning to ensure that this matter is resolved. Chicago, IL 60622.

Despite my car being less than a year old and having driven it for less than 10,000 miles, I have been experiencing engine overheating issues due to a coolant leak. It is disappointing to learn that this is a recognized problem with Tellurides. Unfortunately, my car has been out of commission for over a month now, and I cannot drive it for prolonged periods. Additionally, I have to refill a gallon of coolant every four days. Despite seeking assistance from the dealer service department, I have not received any helpful response. However, I am confident that this issue will be resolved soon, and I will be able to enjoy my car without any further problems.
