2013 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 problems
The Chevrolet Silverado is a range of trucks manufactured by General Motors under the Chevrolet brand. Introduced for the 1999 model year, the Silverado is the successor to the long-running Chevrolet C/K model line. Taking its name from the top trim level from the Chevrolet C/K series, the Silverado is offered as a series of full-size pickup trucks, chassis cab trucks, and medium-duty trucks. The fourth generation of the model line was introduced for the 2019 model year.
The Chevrolet Silverado shares mechanical commonality with the identically related GMC Sierra; GMC ended the use of the C/K nomenclature a model generation prior to Chevrolet. In Mexico, high-trim level versions of the Silverado use the Chevrolet Cheyenne name (not to be confused with the 2003 concept). Competing against the Ford F-Series, Ram Pickup, Toyota Tundra, and Nissan Titan, the Silverado is among the best-selling vehicles in the United States, having sold over 12 million trucks since its introduction in 1998 as a 1999 model year.
History
The Silverado nameplate made its debut for the 1975 model year, becoming the top trim level on all Chevrolet C/K trucks, slotted above Custom Deluxe, Scottsdale, and Cheyenne. For the 1968 model year (seven years before the Silverado), GMC C/K trucks used variations of the Sierra name (Sierra, Sierra Classic, Sierra Grande, and High Sierra). Even after the C/K series officially ended, GM still uses the CK and the CC in their current model codes, to denote a two-wheel drive (CC), and four-wheel drive (CK).
For the 1988 GMT400 model architecture, Chevrolet retained the C/K model nomenclature, with GMC branding its full-size line as Sierras. While sharing the same body and chassis, the model chronology of the Silverado and Sierra are different, with five generations of the Sierra, while four of the Silverado.
In 2018, at the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, Indiana, Chevrolet unveiled the first medium-duty Silverado, expanding the model line to a 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD chassis cab. Largely the successor to the 2003–2009 GMT560 chassis, the medium-duty trucks are exclusive to Chevrolet, with no plans for an equivalent GMC version. Instead, Navistar International (now partnering with GM) would sell the medium-duty trucks as a rebadged counterpart, called the CV. This is in fact a very similar nod to how the Avalanche did not have a GMC Yukon–based equivalent, but instead, Cadillac would take its place as the former's rebadged counterpart, the Escalade EXT.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-05-16
- VIN: 1GC5K0C88DZ

- Summary: I took my Chevrolet Silverado in for the airbag recall, and when it was returned to me the passenger airbag sensor was set off on the dash. The recall work wad done at Capital Chevrolet, at 6200 S I-35 Frontage Rd, Austin, TX 78745. I asked them to fix the airbag sensor problem, and they looked at it and wanted to charge me to fix it. They said that "well it's a 2013 so it probably just went bad". I find it overly suspicious that it went bad IMMEDIATELY after conducting an airbag recall. They offered to repair the airbag issue, but only if I paid them the normal rate. How in the world does it it make sense for me to pay for a recall issue. There were NO issues with the airbags before I brought it in for the recall.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-04-29
- VIN: 1GC4K1C88DF
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: VEHICLE DEVELOPED A FUEL LEAK IN THE RETURN FUEL LINE LOCATED AT THE TANK. THE FUEL LINE IS MADE OF PLASTIC, IT HAS NO PROTECTION AROUND THE FUEL LINE, AND IS LOCATED WHERE NATURAL DEBRIS MAY COLLECT. IN THIS PARTICULAR INCIDENT AN ACORN BECAME LODGED NEXT TO FUEL LINE AND WORE A HOLE IN IT. THE RESULT WAS A FUEL LEAK ONLY WHEN THE VEHICLE IS RUNNING/DRIVEN, AND I WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE AT THE TIME THIS OCCURRED. THE AREA WHERE THIS FUEL LEAK OCCURS IS ALSO DIRECTLY OPPOSITE OF THE DIESEL EXHAUST SYSTEM WHICH REACHES 1200 DEGREES DURING THE REGENERATION PROCESS. WHILE DRIVING WITH THIS LEAK THE WIND TURBULENCE CREATED UNDER THE VEHICLE CAUSED DIESEL FUEL TO BE DISTRIBUTED ACROSS THE ENTIRE UNDERSIDE OF THE TRUCK INCLUDING THE EXHAUST SYSTEM WHICH COULD HAVE CAUSED A FIRE. THERE HAVE BEEN VEHICLE FIRES REPORTED BUT SINCE THE LINES ARE PLASTIC ANY EVIDENCE OF THEM BEING DAMAGED IS DESTROYED AND THE TRUE CAUSE OF THE FIRE LEFT UNDETERMINED. THIS DESIGN DEFECT SHOULD BE LOOKED AT AND CORRECTED IMMEDIATELY TO PREVENT ANY FURTHER PROPERTY DAMAGE AND HARM TO THE PUBLIC AT LARGE. I HAD THE VEHICLE REPAIRED AND THE DEALER CLAIMS A RODENT CHEWED THROUGH THE LINE AND CAUSED THE LEAK. THE VEHICLE IS GARAGED KEPT AND I DO NOT LIVE ON A FARM, PLUS THERE ARE MANY OTHER ITEMS IN THE GARAGE THAT A RODENT WOULD PREFER OVER THE FUEL LINE. I HAVE A VIDEO AND THE FUEL LINE AND THE 2 ACORNS. THE PROBLEM COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED EITHER BY PUTTING A SHIELD TO STOP THE DEBRIS FROM ENTERING, MOVING THE TANK BACK 4 INCHES, AND/OR WRAPPING THE FUEL LINES WITH A PROTECTIVE COVERING.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-12-10
- VIN: 1GC0KZCG9DZ

- Summary: EXHAUST MANIFOLD BOLTS BROKE OFF . DUE TO CHEAP METAL USED.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-08-13
- VIN: 1GC4K1E89DF
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: 2013 CHEVROLET SILVERADO K3500HD LTZ CREWCAB 6.6L DURAMAX : ENGINE REGULARLY FAILS TO START. SINCE ACQUIRING THIS PRE-OWNED TRUCK IN JUNE 2017 I HAVE EXPERIENCED THREE INSTANCES WHERE THE ENGINE TURNS OVER WHILE ATTEMPTING TO START BUT FAILS TO DO SO. IN ALL CASES THE ATTEMPT TO START WAS MADE AFTER THE VEHICLE SAT OUTSIDE OVERNIGHT. VEHICLE WAS ORIENTED WITH A SLIGHT UPHILL (5 DEGREES) NOSE UP ATTITUDE. BATTERY (THERE ARE 2) CONDITION TESTED WELL WITHIN SPECIFICATIONS FOR STATE OF CHARGE,VOLTAGE AND AMPERAGE. AFTER HAVING THE TRUCK TOWED TO VARIOUS SERVICE FACILITIES NONE COULD FIND A CAUSE FOR THE NO START CONDITION. IN EVERY INSTANCE THE TRUCK WOULD RESTART AFTER HAVING SAT FOR A NUMBER OF DAYS. PRIOR TO THESE INCIDENTS THERE HAVE BEEN ALSO BEEN AN EQUAL NUMBER OF LOUD DRIVE TRAIN NOISES WHEN MAKING A LEFT TURN FROM A STANDSTILL ONTO THE HIGHWAY. AFTER ENTERING THE HIGHWAY THE VEHICLE PERFORMED NORMALLY EXCEPT IT WAS IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWED BY WHAT CAN ONLY BE DESCRIBED AS A HESITATION/STUMBLING WHEN ACCELERATING MODERATELY. NONE OF THESE DESCRIBED CONDITIONS HAVE BEEN ACCOMPANIED BUT ANY WARNING TONES OR MIL INDICATORS ON THE DASHBOARD. VEHICLE CURRENTLY HAS APPROX. 209,000 MILES AND WAS ORIGINALLY SOLD NEW IN 2013 AND DRIVEN IN TEXAS BEFORE BEING BROUGHT TO CONNECTICUT IN JAN 2017 FROM WHERE I PURCHASED IT.
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-04-29
- VIN: 1GC4K0C81DF
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: STEERING HAS LOCKED UP MOMENTARILY WHILE TURNING AT LOW SPEED INTO A PARKING LOT. THIS HAS HAPPENED NUMEROUS TIMES, BUT IT IS VERY BRIEF. RECENTLY IT HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES WHILE DRIVING IN DEEP SNOW IN THE MOUNTAINS IN FOUR WHEEL DRIVE. IT COMPLETELY LOCKS UP FOR A SECOND OR SO THEN BREAKS FREE. IT IS NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH BECOMING DIFFICULT TO STEER, AS IF THE POWER STEERING BELT IS SLIPPING - NO IT COMPLETELY LOCKS UP. NO NOISE IS PRESENT WHEN THIS HAPPENS. NO SQUEALING BELTS, NO GRINDING - NO DIFFERENT NOISE OF ANY KIND. IT JUST LOCKS UP, THEN BREAKS FREE. SINCE IT HAPPENS MOMENTARILY, IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO INVESTIGATE OR DUPLICATE. THIS HAS HAPPENED NUMEROUS TIMES SINCE THE TRUCK WAS BRAND NEW.
WHEELS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-05-22
- VIN: 1GC4K1C88DF
- Components: WHEELS
- Summary: I HAVE HAD 2 WHEELS CRACK AT THE VALVE STEM AREA WITHIN THE LAST 2 MONTHS. THIS CAUSES THE TIRE PRESURE TO DROP TO A DANGEROUSLY LOW AMOUNT ( 20-30 PSI). I FELT THE TRUCK PULLING TO THE RIGHT WHEN THE FIRST WHEEL CRACKED AND PULLED OVER BEFORE ANYTHING BLEW. THE SECOND WHEEL WAS NOTICED WHEN I WAS AT A HORSE SHOW. IT WAS DOWN TO 22 PSI. I PUT 75 PSI IN IT AND MADE IT HOME (5 HOURS) AND IT HAD DROPPED TO 65. THIS CRACK CAUSES SLOW LEAK AND IT IS NOT DETECTABLE UNTIL THE TIRES ARE VERY LOW.
AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-02-05
- VIN: 3GCPCSE08DG
- Components: AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: CRACKED DASH. MY VEHICLE ONLY HAS 30K MILES AND ALREADY HAS A CRACK
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-03-01
- VIN: 3GCPCSEA8DG
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: DASH HAS CRACKED ABOVE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG. THIS HAS CAUSED SAFETY CONCERNS SUCH AS THE POSSIBILITY OF THE AIR BAG DEPLOYING OR PIECES OF THE DASH COMING OUT AND INJURING SOMEONE IF IT WAS TO DEPLOY IN AN ACCIDENT. I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE USED AND HAVE ONLY HAD IT ABOUT 5 MONTHS.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-03-25
- VIN: 3GCPKSE78DG
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I HAVE NOW HAD MY CHEVY 2013 SILVERADO IN FOR OIL CONSUMPTION TESTS FOR THE LAST 3 MONTHS AND IT HAS FAILED THEM. WHEN I FIRST BROUGHT IT IN I WAS TOLD THAT THEY WOULD REPLACE THE PISTON RINGS. WHEN IT FINALLY FAILED THEY ARE NOW SAYING THE ARE ONLY REPLACING THE HEAD GASKET AND THE ROCKER ARMS. NEITHER ONE OF THESE HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH MY TRUCK BURNING OIL. THIS IS THE SECOND VEHICLE I HAVE OWNED THAT HAS HAS ISSUES BURNING OIL THE FIRST ONE THEY TOLD ME THAT IT WAS NORMAL FOR IT TO BURN OIL. THEY NEED TO DO WHAT THEY ORIGINALLY TOLD ME AND REPLACE THE PISTON RINGS. WHAT HAPPENS IF THIS ENGINE GOES WHILE I AM GOING DOWN THE HIGHWAY
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-03-22
- VIN: 1GCRCSE06DZ
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: WAX COATING IS COMING OFF OF FRAME RUST SHOWING.
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-01-08
- VIN: 1GC4K1E81DF
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: I BOUGHT THIS USED 2013 TRUCK IN LATE NOV 2015. WHEN MAKING (USUALLY) A RIGHT TURN AT LOW SPEED, ESPECIALLY FROM A STOP LIKE ENTERING TRAFFIC FROM AN INCLINED ACCESS DRIVEWAY, OCCASIONALLY (MAYBE 3 TIMES PER MONTH) THERE IS A SUDDEN AND TOTAL FAILURE OF POWER ASSIST IN STEERING, MAKING THE TURN EXTREMELY DIFFICULT AND UNABLE TO KEEP FROM DRIFTING OUT OF THE INTENDED LANE OF TRAVEL. COLLISIONS WERE AVOIDED SEVERAL TIMES BY (THANKFULLY) ONCOMING TRAFFIC VEERING OUT OF THE WAY. THIS SUDDEN LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL PARTICULARLY AT THIS UNEXPECTED TIME WHILE ACCELERATING TO NEGOTIATE A TRAFFIC ENTRY IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. THIS ONE-TON TRUCK IS NOT LIKE A SUBCOMPACT THAT IS EASY TO TURN 90 DEGREES WITHOUT POWER STEERING, BELIEVE ME. IF MY WIFE WERE DRIVING, THE TRUCK WOULD SURELY GO COMPLETELY ACROSS ALL LANES OF ONCOMING TRAFFIC. AFTER COMPLETING THE TURN, THE POWER STEERING RETURNS TO NORMAL, HOWEVER THE POWER ASSIST STEERING ON THIS 2013 TRUCK HAS ALWAYS BEEN FAR LESS EFFECTIVE THAN MY PREVIOUS IDENTICAL MODEL, BUT 8 YEARS OLDER CHEVY DIESEL ONE-TON TRUCK.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-07-30
- VIN: 3GCPCSE03DG
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: THE DASH HAS CRACKED IN 2 PLACES NEXT TO THE PASSENGER AIRBAG. SHOULD IT DEPLOY THERE WILL BE A PIECE AS LONG AS A BIG KNIFE THAT WILL BECOME A PROJECTILE.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-10-05
- VIN: 3GCPKTE75DG
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: 2013 LTZ SILVERADO 47,000 MILAGE DASH CRACKED IN THE UPPER LEFT CORNER OF AIRBAG AREA. FEEL COULD BE A SAFETY HAZARD IF IN AN ACCIDENT AND AIRBAG IS DEPLOYED CAUSING THE DASH TO THROW SHARDS OF PLASTIC IN CAB. IT CRACKED ONE DAY JUST AS I STARTED TRUCK WHILE STATIONARY.

- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: EQUIPMENT
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2009-2014 Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD, 2009 GMC Topkick 5000, 6000, 7000 and 8000 Series and Isuzu F Series, and 2009-2018 Chevrolet Express, and GMC Savana vehicles, equipped with certain Plastic-Handle Fire Extinguishers or Push Button 'Pindicator' Fire Extinguishers. These extinguishers may become clogged, preventing the extinguisher from discharging as expected or requiring excessive force to activate the extinguisher. Additionally, in certain models, the nozzle may detach from the valve assembly with enough force that it could cause injury and also render the product inoperable. For a full list of the affected fire extinguisher models visit: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RMISC-17E062-5427.pdf
- Consequence: In the event of a fire, if the fire extinguisher does not function properly, it can increase the risk of injury.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, instructing them to contact Kidde to get a replacement fire extinguisher, free of charge. The recall began June 11, 2018. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782, and Isuzu customer service at 1-866-441-9638. GM's number for this recall is 18146.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:AUXILLARY TANK
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2011-2015 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 and GMC Sierra 3500 trucks equipped with dual fuel tanks. The low fuel level sensor for the front tank may stick causing the rear tank to overfill the front tank.
- Consequence: If the front tank overfills, the excess pressure may cause the front tank to expand and contact the driveshaft, possibly resulting in a hole in the tank. The hole will leak fuel, which in the presence of an ignition source, can increase the risk of a fire.
- Remedy: GM has notified owners, and dealers will replace the rear tank fuel pump or update the fuel-level sensor software, as well as inspect the front tank, replacing it as necessary, free of charge. The recall began December 11, 2017. Owners may contact GM customer service for Chevrolet 1-800-222-1020 or for GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 17399.
