2011 Honda Cr-z problems

honda logo

The Honda CR-Z is a sport compact hybrid electric car manufactured by Honda and marketed as a "sport hybrid coupe." The CR-Z combines a hybrid gasoline-electric powertrain with traditional sports car elements, including a 2+2 seating arrangement (excluding North American models where the backseat is removed) and a standard 6-speed manual transmission. The CR-Z is regarded as the spiritual successor to the second-generation Honda CR-X in both name and exterior design.

In the U.S., the CR-Z is one of the least polluting hybrid vehicles available and is rated as an Advanced Technology Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (AT-PZEV) as defined by the California Air Resources Board (CARB). The CR-Z is the third gasoline-electric hybrid model offered by Honda (after the 2000–2006 Insight and 2003–2005 Civic Hybrid) that can be equipped with a manual transmission, and the only one in its class.

The CR-Z is the sixth unique version of Honda's Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) technology since the technology was first launched in the first generation Insight 3 door hatchback. Sales of the CR-Z began in Japan in February 2010. Sales in the U.S. began in August 2010, and production ended by the end of 2016.

Common 2011 Honda Cr-z problems

The 2011 Honda CR-Z has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. These issues can be categorized into airbag system problems, body structure problems, and transmission problems.

  • Body Structure Problems: The CR-Z has struggled with various body structure problems, including persistent door handle issues, rusting, actuator failures, and more.
  • Transmission Problems: The biggest transmission issue facing the 2011 Honda CR-Z is a software glitch that causes cars to go in the wrong direction. This software issue has led to significant concerns about the reliability and safety of the transmission system.

These common problems with the 2011 Honda CR-Z have contributed to the overall perception that debut models, especially first production years, may have reliability woes and quirks that may not surface until consumers drive them in real-world conditions. As such, the 2011 Honda CR-Z is generally not recommended for potential buyers due to its high number of complaints and recalls.

2011 Honda Cr-z engine

How many miles does a 2011 Honda CR-Z last?

Hondas are known to last longer than most vehicles. There's no reason you can't push a CR-Z past 300,000 miles.

Why did Honda discontinue the CR-Z?

Discontinuation. On June 17, 2016, Honda announced that the CR-Z would be discontinued at the end of the year to make room for the Accord Hybrid and Clarity.

Can you drive a CR-Z without the battery?

But, the CR-Z can be driven without the Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) battery. This is primarily because the IMA is designed to supplement the gasoline engine. Q: Does the CR-Z drive differently from other cars? A: The CR-Z drives, sounds and behaves like any other Honda gasoline vehicle.

How fast can a 2011 Honda CR-Z go?

As expected, our CVT test car's skidpad (0.86 g), top-speed (121 mph), and 70-to-0-mph braking (180 ft) numbers are all within spitting distance of the manual car's. And at 2698 pounds, this car weighed just 54 more than the manual car.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-02-15
  • VIN: JHMZF1D63BS
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: On February 15 I took a short drive into Woodstock, Vt. My trip into Woodstock was without incident, except for the fact that I got a "check tire pressure" alert, probably due to the very cold weather. When I finished my business and restarted the car, there was an additional alert: "check power steering". The car previously had no issues with steering. I drove the car to another nearby parking spot. There was no power assist at all. I wrestled the car into the parking space and called AAA for a tow. The tow truck driver arrived in about an hour. He asked for the keys and started the car. The problem had disappeared. With a friend tailing me I drove to a nearby auto repair shop, asked them to investigate and told them I would pick the car up the next day. They called me the next day and informed me that they had connected the car to the computer analyzer and found no problem. They had also driven the car on the day I dropped it off and again the next day and were unable to reproduce the problem. I went online and discovered others have had similar issues: https://www.crzforum.com/threads/scary-power-steering-eps-issue.87738/ and https://www.carcomplaints.com/Honda/CR-Z/2011/steering/steering.shtml. I contacted my nearest Honda dealership as well as Honda USA. I received no substantive help from either party, although Honda USA did suggest I bring it to the dealer for repair, which I will attempt to do tomorrow. I don't know what the threshold is for generating a recall, but the possible consequences of this problem are so serious that I wanted to share my experience. My car has less than 30,000 miles.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-09-09
  • VIN: jhmzf1c42bs
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: As I was pulling away from a stop sign, the right-hand CV shaft snapped in the middle. Fortunately, I had just enough speed to coast into a parking lot, so I was not a traffic obstacle. On closer inspection, the failure occurred underneath the rubber/metal dynamic damper clamped to the center of the CV shaft. It looks like the dynamic damper was not adequately sealed and trapped salt and water until enough corrosion happened, causing the failure of the CV shaft.

STEERING,POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-05-02
  • VIN: JHMZF1D68BS
  • Components: STEERING,POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: 2011 CR-Z PASSENGER CARS WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS THE ENGINE STALL WHILE THE BRAKE PEDAL IS NOT PRESSED, THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT THE ENGINE CONTROL UNIT (ECU) SOFTWARE MAY CAUSE THE ELECTRIC MOTOR OF THE HYBRID SYSTEM TO MOVE THE VEHICLE UNEXPECTEDLY IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION OF THE SELECTED GEAR. ADDITIONALLY THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING IS DRAINING NEW 12V BATTERIES WITH LESS THAN A 6 MONTHS USE (SEE ATTACHMENT). VEHICLE MOVEMENT CAUSED BY ENGINE STALL AND LACK OF POWER STEERING COULD INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH OR PERSONAL INJURY TO THE PERSONS IN THE PATH OF THE MOVING VEHICLE. THERE HAS ALREADY BEEN A RECALL ON 2011 HONDA CRZ MANUAL TRANS FOR THE ISSUE MENTIONED ABOVE.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-09-04
  • VIN: JHMZF1C68BS
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: ON 09/04/2018 MY HONDA CR-Z IMA LIGHT CAME ON, I TOOK IT TO THE HONDA DEALERSHIP THEY SAID THEY NEVER HAD AN IMA LIGHT COME ON WITHOUT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT BE ON. THEY TOOK IT FOR DIAGNOSTICS, AND CAME TO THE CONCLUSION THAT MY CLUTCH SENSOR IS BAD AND THAT IS WHATS CAUSING THE IMA LIGHT TO BE ON. THE PERSON WHO I SPOKE TO AT HONDA SAID THAT THEY DIAGNOSE ABOUT FORTY CARS A DAY FOR SEVEN YEARS AND NEVER RAN INTO THAT ISSUE. THEY SAID THAT I WOULD BE GOOD DRIVING IT AND WOULD EXPERIENCE MORE PROBLEMS IN ABOUT A YEAR IF I DON'T FIX THE CLUTCH SENSOR ON 9/07/2018 MY CAR HAD A LIGHT COME ON THAT SAID CHECK FUEL CAP WHICH I'M GUESSING MY FUEL SENSOR IS OUT NOW, BUT HONDA IS NO HELP WILL NOT HELP ME OUT CLAIMS THE CAR IS NOT UNDER WARRANTY WHEN IT HAS LESS THAN 100,000 MILES ON IT.THIS CAN BE A BIG SAFETY ISSUE DUE TO THE FACT THAT IF MY IMA BATTERY FAILS ON ME MY LIFE CAN BE IN DANGER ALONG WITH THE OTHERS AROUND ME. ALSO FOR A COMPANY TO CLAIM THEY HAD NEVER RAN INTO THESE ISSUES THEY DO NOT SHOW MUCH INTEREST IN FIXING IT.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-02-05
  • VIN: JHMZF1C6XBS
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: DRIVER DOOR WILL NO LONGER OPEN FROM OUTSIDE. PROBLEM STARTED WHEN VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN DIRECT SUNLIGHT, THEN GOT WORSE SO THAT THE DOOR WILL NO LONGER OPEN FROM THE OUTSIDE NO MATTER WHAT. USING PASSENGER DOOR NOW TO GET IN, AND IT IS NOW FAILING IN DIRECT SUNLIGHT, AND I EXPECT I WILL SOON NEED TO ENTER THROUGH THE REAR HATCH. ONLINE SEARCH INDICATES THIS IS A COMMON FAILURE ON 2011 HONDA CRZ'S.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-11-18
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: DOOR LOCKS ON DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE WILL NOT LOCK OR UNLOCK WHILE USING INTERIOR DOOR LOCK BUTTON OR KEY FOB. PARKING LIGHTS WILL FLASH WHEN KEY FOB BUTTON IS PRESSED. PROBLEM STARTED WITH PASSENGER DOOR FIRST THEN 2 WEEKS LATER DRIVER DOOR STOPPED. DEALERSHIP DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS FAILED LOCK ACTUATORS.
2017-12-05

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-10-05
  • VIN: JHMZF1C45BS
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: VEHICLE HAS PERIODICALLY STARTED EXHIBITING STRANGE AND DANGEROUS ISSUES WITH THE ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING (WHILE STOPPED AND AT VARIOUS SPEEDS) AND, OF GREATER CONCERN, WHEN THE COMPUTER IS DETECTING ISSUES IT IS NOT SHUTTING DOWN THE EPS SYSTEM AS IT SHOULD BUT, INSTEAD, SPORADICALLY TURNS ON AND OFF EVEN WHILE IN THE MIDDLE OF A TURN. WHEN THIS ISSUE OCCURS IT FIRST STARTS BY A MOMENTARY (OR SOMETIMES LONGER) FLASH OF THE EPS INDICATOR ON THE DASH AND THERE IS A CONSTANT SOUND OF RELAYS CLICKING IN THE DASH TO THE LEFT OF THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THIS INDICATOR LIGHT WILL RANDOMLY TURN OFF AND ON WITH SEEMINGLY NO REASON AND THE STEERING BECOMES STIFF, THEN LIGHT, AND OFTEN WILL BEGIN AN ASSIST IN THE MIDDLE OF A TURN WHICH RESULTS IN THE VEHICLE VEERING DEEPER INTO THE TURN UNLESS THE OPERATOR RESPONDS QUICKLY ENOUGH TO PULL IT BACK TO THE CORRECT POSITION. THESE PERIODIC ISSUES CAN SOMETIMES LAST 5 MINS OR CAN LAST AN ENTIRE TRIP AND OCCASIONALLY THE COMPUTER DISPLAY WILL FLASH A MESSAGE TO CHECK POWER STEERING BUT THEN USUALLY IMMEDIATELY CLEAR THAT MESSAGE ALONG WITH ANY ERRORS. A MECHANIC WAS NOT ABLE TO REPRODUCE THE ISSUE AND WAS NOT ABLE TO LOCATE ANY ERRORS FROM THE STANDARD COMPUTER BUT DID NOT HAVE ACCESS TO THE PROPRIETARY HONDA PROTOCOLS AND A DEALER WANTS $120 JUST TO CONNECT THE CAR TO THE COMPUTER. ADDITIONALLY I ASKED IF THERE WAS A WAY TO DISABLE THE POWER STEERING COMPLETELY SO THAT THE VEHICLE DIDN'T OVER OR UNDER STEER ON ME AND THE DEALER SAID THAT THIS WASN'T POSSIBLE AND THAT ONLY THE COMPUTER WAS ABLE TO DISABLE THE POWER STEERING IF IT DETECTED A PROBLEM (WHICH IN MY CASE IT IS ONLY DISABLING MOMENTARILY WHICH IS CREATING AN EVEN GREATER HAZARD). MY DEALERSHIP SEEMED UNCONCERNED WITH THE SAFETY HAZARD THIS CREATES AND OFFERED NO REASONABLE PATH TO INVESTIGATE AND REPAIR.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-10-15
  • VIN: JHMZF1D6XBS
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: THERE IS APPARENTLY A DEFECTIVE PART IN THE DOOR HANDLE OPERATION THAT DOES NOT STAND UP UNDER HEAT. OUR DRIVER SIDE DOOR IS NOT OPENING AND THE PASSENGER IS GOING QUICKLY. SHOULD WE BE INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT AND UNABLE TO OPEN THE DOORS OURSELVES. RESCUE/EMERGENCY PERSONELL WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO GET TO US. VERY UNSAFE. THIS IS AN ONGOING ISSUE FOR MANY HONDA OWNERS ACCORDING TO OUR ONLINE RESEARCH.

THE LETTER STATES THE PARTS WILL BE AVAILABLE IN THE SUMMER OF 2016. MY DEALER HAS BEEN LESS THAN HELPFUL. HONDA CORPORATE HAS BEEN EVEN LESS HELPFUL. I AM MAKING PAYMENTS AND PAYING INSURANCE ON A VEHICLE I CAN'T DRIVE. NOW THE VEHICLE WON'T START WITHOUT A JUMP AND THE BATTERY DOESN'T HOLD A CHARGE. THIS RECALL IS A HUGE FINANCIAL DRAIN ON MY FAMILY, NOT TO MENTION AN INCONVENIENCE AND NO ONE SEEMS TO CARE. I HAVE A CASE NUMBER FROM HONDA. IT TOOK 44 DAYS TO FINALLY GET [XXX] MY CASE MANAGER ON THE PHONE AND SHE HUNG UP ON ME. IT WOULD BE NICE IF HONDA WOULD COMPENSATE THE OWNERS OF ITS VEHICLES FOR THIS. BUT THAT SEEMS HIGHLY UNLIKELY BASED ON HOW I HAVE BEEN TREATED THUS FAR. IF YOU CAN DO ANYTHING TO EXPEDITE THE COMPLETION OF THE RECALL I WOULD SINCERELY APPRECIATE IT. STEERING,WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-11-26
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: JHMZF1D65BS
  • Components: STEERING,WHEELS
  • Summary: I HAD JUST BOUGHT THIS CAR IN SEPTEMBER, AND ON THE MORNING OF WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 26, 2014 IT CRASHED. I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, I495-SOUTH. IT WAS RAINING AND I THINK THE CAR HIT A WATER PUDDLE OR SLEET, AND STARTED FISH TAILING. I TRIED TO GET IT BACK UNDER CONTROL, AND I DID FOR A FEW SECONDS AS IT WAS TRYING TO PULL TO THE RIGHT. THEN IT JUST SUDDENLY TOOK OFF TO THE LEFT, VERY STRANGE, ALMOST LIKE THERE WAS EITHER A WHEEL/TIRE ISSUE, TRANSMISSION, ELECTRICAL OR STEERING WHEEL.. WHATEVER IT WAS IT SEEMED LIKE IT TOOK OVER AND JUST TOOK OFF LIKE A CRAZY HORSE TO THE LEFT. I WAS LUCKY THERE WERE NO CARS TO THE LEFT! THE CAR JUST TOOK OFF TO THE LEFT AS I HELD THE WHEEL AND COULDN'T GET IT UNDER CONTROL, IT DROVE THROUGH DIVIDERS INTO HOV LANES AND INTO CONCRETE HIGHWAY DIVIDERS. IT WAS THE SCARIEST AND MOST PAINFUL MOMENT OF MY LIFE, I HAVE BEEN PHYSICALLY AND EMOTIONALLY TRAUMATIZED. EMT, AMBULANCE, FIRETRUCKS AND POLICE ARRIVED, AND THEY HAD TO CUT OFF THE ROOF TO GET ME OUT BECAUSE OF SEVERE BACK PAIN I COULDN'T MOVE, WAS DIZZY AND COULDN'T BREATH WELL. I WAS TAKEN TO TRAUMA IN ER AND WAS HOSPITALIZED FOR 3 DAYS. I FRACTURED MY SPINE, AND WAS OUT OF WORK FOR 2 MONTHS. I HAD A SURGERY, KYPHOPLASTY, BEEN GOING THROUGH PHYSICAL THERAPY AND NOW CHIROPRACTOR. I WILL NEVER BE THE SAME ATHLETIC PERSON I USED TO BE, IT RUINED MY LIFE. I AM FILING THIS COMPLAINT BECAUSE I KNOW FOR A FACT, AS I WAS BEHIND THE WHEEL, I FELT THIS CAR, IT WAS NOT A SAFE CAR, IT HAS ISSUES. I NOTICED YOU HAVE A RECALL FOR 2011 MODELS, FOR SIMILAR ISSUES, AS IT CAN CAUSE CRASH AND INJURY. THE SEATS ARE NOT SAFE, THE CAR IS NOT SAFE. I ADVICE EVERYONE AGAINST THE PURCHASE OF THIS VEHICLE. THIS WAS THE FIRST ACCIDENT IN MY LIFE! *TR

Negative 2011 Honda Cr-z car reviews

  1. Colin Wyman 2024-11-13

It sounds like you've had some trouble with your car after 75,000 miles. Unfortunately, parts can be quite expensive, such as the blower motor for the air conditioner which costs $550 for the part and $300 for labor to replace. However, there are some affordable aftermarket options available, like a cargo cover for $55. Overall, it's a good car as long as you don't keep it for too long. Thank you for sharing your experience!

  2. Evert Koelpin 2024-09-03

I have to admit that I am not entirely satisfied with my car. Although it is a Honda and I am sure it is a good car, I regret buying it on an impulse. I waited almost 5 days to pick it up from the dealership after I had purchased it. Unfortunately, I find it to be one of the ugliest cars on the road, especially the back end. Additionally, I find it to be impractical due to its small size and discomfort. The car is slower than I expected and the interior can be quite noisy on the open road. There is also no place to rest your arms and the cup holders are not very accommodating. I have decided to sell my car and it has been up for sale for about 3 months now. I recently traded in my Honda CRZ after two years of ownership. Although I bought it new, I found that it wasn't worth the 20k I paid for it. While the car has potential, it lacks the thought process needed to make it truly unique and worthwhile. Unfortunately, the interior is made of cheap materials that scratch very easily, especially since the car sits low to the ground. Additionally, the engine shuts off when the car stops, and the car is prone to dents. I also found that the engine shutoff was becoming more problematic over time. The car is quite slow, and there are some significant blind spots to be aware of. Changing lanes on the highway or backing up can be a bit challenging due to the hatch not being positioned properly. However, I have since purchased a new Dodge Dart that is faster and gets the same gas mileage.

Hello there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with hybrids, as I've owned a few in the past. I've had the original 60 mpg Honda Insight, and currently, I have a 2010 Toyota Prius II. I recently purchased the CR-Z, and while it's a decent car, I must say I'm a bit disappointed. With the advancements in hybrid technology over the last 10 years, I expected better than 31mpg with the manual transmission. In hindsight, I think I should have gone with a Honda Fit instead. It's a more useful car, and I could have saved $4K in the process. I'll probably be driving my Prius more often than the CR-Z. Thanks for listening!

Looks better than in pictures. The seat is nice, but the height adjustment could be improved as it tilts at the same time. The shifter is very good. However, the rear wheels are too much tucked inside the fenders. The car is reluctant to accelerate at any rpm, and the engine noise is not what one would expect from a Honda. Revs build slowly. The brake pedal feels unnatural with no initial bite, and the steering does not feel connected, like most electric steering systems. Additionally, the clutch is too soft, making it hard to feel the engagement point.

If you have fond memories of the CRX, the CRZ is sure to capture your heart at first sight. Even if you don't, the CRZ's unique feel will either win you over or leave you cold. On the plus side, the sporty exterior is eye-catching, there are three distinct performance modes to choose from, the cabin is intimate and well-designed, and there are plenty of technical features for the MSRP. The handling is tight and the sound acoustics are excellent. On the downside, the hybrid fuel efficiency is lacklustre, there are blind spots in the quarter panels, the economy-mode performance is mushy, and the navigation system is dated. Overall, the CRZ is a great choice for commuters who want a fun driving experience and a sporty look. Just keep your MPG expectations reasonable to avoid disappointment.

I've been a proud owner of my CRZ for 8 years now and I can't imagine driving anything else. In fact, I love it so much that I own two! While it's true that the CRZ is not the fastest hybrid out there and its mileage could be better, it more than makes up for it with its exceptional handling. Thanks to its short wheelbase and 'sport' driving mode, driving the CRZ feels like zipping around in a go-kart. Plus, its futuristic hood looks and rarity often turn heads and prompt questions like 'Is that a Honda Civic?'

After driving a 2006 VW GTI 1.8T for over six years, I decided to buy the CR-Z. It's a fun little car to drive, but the acceleration is quite slow. Despite giving up a backseat, it has pretty good storage space. However, the rear hatch door and window design cause significant blind spots, which is the worst thing about this car. Unfortunately, my CR-Z was totaled two days after I bought it when I was rear-ended by someone going about 45 mph. Thankfully, I walked away with pretty bad whiplash but not much else, which shows that it's a safe car. Overall, it's a good value for the money, but I would recommend waiting for them to work out the design flaws before investing in one. The blind spots are terrible, but everything else is great.

I've had my CR-Z for over a month now and I'm still excited to drive it every day. The handling is excellent and I feel safe, especially when I switch to sport mode. The gas mileage is good, but what really makes this car special are the comfortable seats, awesome technology, and great build quality. The only downside is that there's no backseat, but there's plenty of trunk space.

I decided to purchase this snazzy economic sports coupe after test driving many other makes/models. The CR-Z EX w/ CVT exceeded all expectations and continues to impress. The Chevy Cruz was loud and had many rattles, while the Ford Fiesta/Mazda2 were cramped. The CR-Z, on the other hand, is roomy, handles with precision, rides great, has brisk acceleration, gets 38-52 mpg and looks like a true sports car costing thousands more. The bright silver paint with gray luxury-sports cloth seating makes for a rich combination that turns heads. Many people ask how we like our new Honda. If you want to pamper yourself just a tad more, treat yourself with the nicely equipped
