Honda Cr-z problems
The Honda CR-Z is a sport compact hybrid electric car manufactured by Honda and marketed as a "sport hybrid coupe." The CR-Z combines a hybrid gasoline-electric powertrain with traditional sports car elements, including a 2+2 seating arrangement (excluding North American models where the backseat is removed) and a standard 6-speed manual transmission. The CR-Z is regarded as the spiritual successor to the second-generation Honda CR-X in both name and exterior design.
In the U.S., the CR-Z is one of the least polluting hybrid vehicles available and is rated as an Advanced Technology Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (AT-PZEV) as defined by the California Air Resources Board (CARB). The CR-Z is the third gasoline-electric hybrid model offered by Honda (after the 2000–2006 Insight and 2003–2005 Civic Hybrid) that can be equipped with a manual transmission, and the only one in its class.
The CR-Z is the sixth unique version of Honda's Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) technology since the technology was first launched in the first generation Insight 3 door hatchback. Sales of the CR-Z began in Japan in February 2010. Sales in the U.S. began in August 2010, and production ended by the end of 2016.

Common Honda Cr-z problems
Based on complaints from owners of the Honda CR-Z, common problems with this car include:
- Persistent Door Handle Issues:
Owners reported problems with door handles on both the driver and passenger sides. Faulty handles that fail to open doors from the outside can be inconvenient and pose safety concerns. Additionally, issues with door locks not responding to interior buttons and key fobs have been noted. - Rusting:
Some owners mentioned rusting, particularly on the inside of the hatchback, which can compromise the vehicle's structural integrity over time. Rust issues may indicate potential problems with material quality or water sealing. - Actuator Failures:
Complaints included unresponsive door locks, both interior and with the key fob, suggesting potential widespread issues with the lock actuators. This can lead to difficulties in accessing the vehicle and may impact overall security. - Loss of Power Steering:
Multiple reports highlighted sudden and unexplained loss of power steering, making the car difficult to maneuver. This issue can be particularly alarming and affect the vehicle's drivability and safety. - Engine Stalling and Unexpected Movement:
Some owners experienced engine stalling, where the hybrid system's electric motor moved the car unexpectedly in the opposite direction of the selected gear. This unexpected movement can be hazardous, especially in certain driving conditions. - Electrical Issues:
Concerns were raised about the power steering system draining batteries prematurely, indicating potential electrical problems. Unexpected behavior of the steering system, especially in wet conditions, was noted to potentially contribute to accidents.
These problems reported by Honda CR-Z owners highlight various issues ranging from door handle malfunctions to more critical concerns like power steering failures and unexpected vehicle movements. Regular maintenance and thorough inspections can help address these issues and ensure the longevity and safety of the vehicle.
Why did Honda discontinue CR-Z?
Discontinuation. On June 17, 2016, Honda announced that the CR-Z would be discontinued at the end of the year to make room for the Accord Hybrid and Clarity.
How long do Honda CR-Z hybrid batteries last?
Your Honda hybrid battery life expectancy is between 6 to 10 years or up to 100,000 miles.
Is it worth it to buy a Honda CRZ?
Honda is known for its reputation for making reliable and durable vehicles. It certainly applies to the Honda CR-Z. RepairPal says the Honda CR-Z is the 12th most reliable subcompact car out of 21 models from other brands.
What is the problem with the Honda CRZ manual transmission?
The CR-Z recall covers 5,626 cars from the 2011 model year, all with manual transmissions. Honda says if the engine stalls with the hybrid battery at low charge and the transmission in gear, the vehicle might unexpectedly roll in the opposite direction. If the transmission is in reverse, the vehicle will roll forward.

Honda Cr-z 2013
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-26
- Date Complaint: 2023-06-28
- VIN: JHMZF1C69DS
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Front driver side axle rusted and snapped in half - in line with safety recalls #20V769 & #20V770. Currently, it is available for inspection. I am hoping to begin repairs within the next 3 days. I will save the defective parts and take photos for inspection, upon request. This occurred from a complete stop, turning onto an extremely busy highway. I was able roll into the middle lane to avoid collision. My vehicle was disabled in the middle lane for roughly an hour. I exited my vehicle and stood on the side of the road while I waited for a tow truck to arrive. Due to the high traffic, it was unsafe (for other motorists) for my vehicle to remain in the center lane for more than a moment and I was unsafe inside the vehicle. The only indication leading up to the incident was a dull thud followed by immediate loss of accelleration, while legally crossing lanes. There was a near collision from oncoming traffic; fortunately my vehicle was visible and oncoming traffic came to a stop, allowing me to slowly coast into the middle lane. No warning lamps, lights, or messages. The vehicle was inspected by a Honda dealer, the rusted and snapped axle was confirmed by a tehnician. This exact incident is covered under two different Honda recalls but the model of my vehicle is not covered. The Honda CR-Z is a lesser known model no longer in production, no doubt the reason it is not included. My vehicle falls under all other guidelines exactly; i.e., model year, registered state, nature of the failure.

Honda Cr-z 2012
- Date Of Incident: 2022-04-15
- Date Complaint: 2022-06-29
- VIN: JHMZF1D6XCS
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Same issue as the 2012 CRV recalls of the passenger aide lock actuators. The passenger door lock works sometimes but the car will constantly try to lock that door if it is unlocked, because it won’t always lock. The dealership isn’t sure, I wonder if it’s a fuse because I hear the entire mechanism when it works. Also, it works with the drivers side child safety control which turns off the controls on the passengers side and also keeps it locked so someone cant jump in your cat when you unlock the drivers door. This is the exact problem the Accords and CRV has in the same year and I want to get mine repaired also. Its in perfect condition and taken care of.

- Date Of Incident: 2022-02-15
- Date Complaint: 2022-02-23
- VIN: JHMZF1D63BS
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: On February 15 I took a short drive into Woodstock, Vt. My trip into Woodstock was without incident, except for the fact that I got a "check tire pressure" alert, probably due to the very cold weather. When I finished my business and restarted the car, there was an additional alert: "check power steering". The car previously had no issues with steering. I drove the car to another nearby parking spot. There was no power assist at all. I wrestled the car into the parking space and called AAA for a tow. The tow truck driver arrived in about an hour. He asked for the keys and started the car. The problem had disappeared. With a friend tailing me I drove to a nearby auto repair shop, asked them to investigate and told them I would pick the car up the next day. They called me the next day and informed me that they had connected the car to the computer analyzer and found no problem. They had also driven the car on the day I dropped it off and again the next day and were unable to reproduce the problem. I went online and discovered others have had similar issues: https://www.crzforum.com/threads/scary-power-steering-eps-issue.87738/ and https://www.carcomplaints.com/Honda/CR-Z/2011/steering/steering.shtml. I contacted my nearest Honda dealership as well as Honda USA. I received no substantive help from either party, although Honda USA did suggest I bring it to the dealer for repair, which I will attempt to do tomorrow. I don't know what the threshold is for generating a recall, but the possible consequences of this problem are so serious that I wanted to share my experience. My car has less than 30,000 miles.
Honda Cr-z 2011
- Date Of Incident: 2021-09-09
- Date Complaint: 2021-09-29
- VIN: jhmzf1c42bs
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: As I was pulling away from a stop sign, the right-hand CV shaft snapped in the middle. Fortunately, I had just enough speed to coast into a parking lot, so I was not a traffic obstacle. On closer inspection, the failure occurred underneath the rubber/metal dynamic damper clamped to the center of the CV shaft. It looks like the dynamic damper was not adequately sealed and trapped salt and water until enough corrosion happened, causing the failure of the CV shaft.

THEY TOOK IT FOR DIAGNOSTICS, AND CAME TO THE CONCLUSION THAT MY CLUTCH SENSOR IS BAD AND THAT IS WHATS CAUSING THE IMA LIGHT TO BE ON. THE PERSON WHO I SPOKE TO AT HONDA SAID THAT THEY DIAGNOSE ABOUT FORTY CARS A DAY FOR SEVEN YEARS AND NEVER RAN INTO THAT ISSUE. THEY SAID THAT I WOULD BE GOOD DRIVING IT AND WOULD EXPERIENCE MORE PROBLEMS IN ABOUT A YEAR IF I DON'T FIX THE CLUTCH SENSOR ON 9/07/2018 MY CAR HAD A LIGHT COME ON THAT SAID CHECK FUEL CAP WHICH I'M GUESSING MY FUEL SENSOR IS OUT NOW, BUT HONDA IS NO HELP WILL NOT HELP ME OUT CLAIMS THE CAR IS NOT UNDER WARRANTY WHEN IT HAS LESS THAN 100,000 MILES ON IT.THIS CAN BE A BIG SAFETY ISSUE DUE TO THE FACT THAT IF MY IMA BATTERY FAILS ON ME MY LIFE CAN BE IN DANGER ALONG WITH THE OTHERS AROUND ME. Hi there! I recently test drove a 2012 CR-Z EX manual transmission with 65K miles. Before heading to the lot, I did my research and read every review and long term test to prepare. For some context, I've owned a 02 Accord DX, 93' Civic DX, and a 2010 Honda Fit Base, all manual transmissions. As someone who knows small Hondas pretty well, I was hoping the CR-Z would be a moderately zippy 2-seater that could take a turn with spirit. However, I found that it was slower and didn't handle as well as my Fit. On the upside, the CR-Z is extremely cheap to insure (Hybrid owners are considered safer) and gets pretty good MPG. While it may not be the best sports car or hybrid out there, there are still a handful of Hondas that can offer a fun driving experience with comparable MPG and more than two seats. So why would you bother with the CR-Z? Well, maybe it's the styling or perhaps the size works well for you in the city, or you just want something different. Either way, if you know what you're getting into, it's not a bad car, it just may not be the best fit for everyone. Hope this helps!

You either like the styling, or you don't. It's like choosing between a sports car that gets 35 mpg or settling for something else and spending a lot more money!!

If you have fond memories of the CRX, the CRZ is sure to capture your heart at first sight. Even if you don't, the CRZ's unique feel will either win you over or leave you cold. On the plus side, the sporty exterior is eye-catching, there are three distinct performance modes to choose from, the cabin is intimate and well-designed, and there are plenty of technical features for the MSRP. The handling is tight and the sound acoustics are excellent. On the downside, the hybrid fuel efficiency is lacklustre, there are blind spots in the quarter panels, the economy-mode performance is mushy, and the navigation system is dated. Overall, the CRZ is a great choice for commuters who want a fun driving experience and a sporty look. Just keep your MPG expectations reasonable to avoid disappointment.

This hybrid is truly unique as it is the only one on the market that comes with a manual transmission. It's a 2-seater with a spacious cargo area, perfect for those trips to Costco. The car is not only reliable like most Hondas, but it's also a blast to drive and performs exceptionally well. With 3 driving modes to choose from - normal, eco, and sport - you can customize your driving experience to your liking. Personally, I prefer eco mode for everyday driving, but when I want to feel the power, sport mode really delivers. And let's not forget about the stylish exterior - it's a real head-turner! As for maintenance, all you need to worry about are regular oil and filter changes and new tires. It's that easy!

It sounds like you've had some trouble with your car after 75,000 miles. Unfortunately, parts can be quite expensive, such as the blower motor for the air conditioner which costs $550 for the part and $300 for labor to replace. However, there are some affordable aftermarket options available, like a cargo cover for $55. Overall, it's a good car as long as you don't keep it for too long. Thank you for sharing your experience!

The vehicle looks really cool and is sporty for a hybrid, making it fun to drive. However, it is important to note that the 12V battery in these cars is not very reliable and may need to be replaced frequently. Additionally, the air conditioner is known to be weak and may struggle on hotter days. Despite these issues, the 6 speed manual transmission is a great feature. Overall, it's important to weigh the pros and cons before making a decision.

I have to admit that I am not entirely satisfied with my car. Although it is a Honda and I am sure it is a good car, I regret buying it on an impulse. I waited almost 5 days to pick it up from the dealership after I had purchased it. Unfortunately, I find it to be one of the ugliest cars on the road, especially the back end. Additionally, I find it to be impractical due to its small size and discomfort. The car is slower than I expected and the interior can be quite noisy on the open road. There is also no place to rest your arms and the cup holders are not very accommodating. I have decided to sell my car and it has been up for sale for about 3 months now. Thank you for your understanding.

I recently traded in my Honda CRZ after two years of ownership. Although I bought it new, I found that it wasn't worth the 20k I paid for it. While the car has potential, it lacks the thought process needed to make it truly unique and worthwhile. Unfortunately, the interior is made of cheap materials that scratch very easily, especially since the car sits low to the ground. Additionally, the engine shuts off when the car stops, and the car is prone to dents. I also found that the engine shutoff was becoming more problematic over time. The car is quite slow, and there are some significant blind spots to be aware of. Changing lanes on the highway or backing up can be a bit challenging due to the hatch not being positioned properly. However, I have since purchased a new Dodge Dart that is faster and gets the same gas mileage.

Looks better than in pictures. The seat is nice, but the height adjustment could be improved as it tilts at the same time. The shifter is very good. However, the rear wheels are too much tucked inside the fenders. The car is reluctant to accelerate at any rpm, and the engine noise is not what one would expect from a Honda. Revs build slowly. The brake pedal feels unnatural with no initial bite, and the steering does not feel connected, like most electric steering systems. Additionally, the clutch is too soft, making it hard to feel the engagement point.
