1991 Ford Bronco problems

ford logo

The Ford Bronco is a model line of SUVs manufactured and marketed by Ford. The first SUV model developed by the company, five generations of the Bronco were sold from the 1966 to 1996 model years. A sixth generation of the model line was introduced for the 2021 model year. The nameplate has been used on other Ford SUVs, namely the 1984–1990 Bronco II compact SUV and the 2021 Bronco Sport compact crossover.

Originally developed as a compact off-road vehicle using its own chassis, the Bronco initially competed against the Jeep CJ-5 and International Harvester Scout. For 1978, Ford enlarged the Bronco, making it a short-wheelbase version of the F-Series pickup truck; the full-size Bronco competed against the Chevrolet K5 Blazer and Dodge Ramcharger.

Following a decline in demand for large two-door SUVs, Ford discontinued the Bronco after the 1996 model year, replacing it with the four-door Ford Expedition; followed by the larger Ford Excursion. After a 25-year hiatus, the sixth-generation Bronco is now offered as a mid-size two-door SUV for the first time. It is also offered as a full-size four-door SUV with a 16 in (41 cm) longer wheelbase. It competes directly with the Jeep Wrangler as both a two-door and a four-door (hardtop) convertible.

From 1965 to 1996, the Ford Bronco was manufactured by Ford at its Michigan Truck Plant in Wayne, Michigan, where it also manufactures the sixth-generation version.

Common 1991 Ford Bronco problems

The 1991 Ford Bronco is known for several common problems that have been reported by its owners. One of the most significant issues is related to the transmission system, with many owners complaining about rough shifts while driving their Bronco. Upon investigation, they often find out that their SUV has problems with its transmission, which usually requires replacement to resolve the issue.

Another common problem area for the 1991 Ford Bronco is the engine. Concerns range from oil leaks to poor gas mileage, which are typically caused by a damaged oil pan gasket. Additionally, some drivers have experienced problems with their vehicle’s oil pressure. Many owners of the Ford Bronco have complained about intermittent oil pressure readings. When they put their SUV into gear, the oil pressure would suddenly drop, and the check engine light would illuminate. In some cases, the vehicle may even stall.

The brake system is another problematic area for the 1991 Ford Bronco. Some drivers have reported issues with their front brakes, such as sticking, binding, or grabbing from time to time. Others have reported problems with their vehicle’s brake caliper pins. Most of these issues can be resolved by cleaning or replacing the brake caliper pins.

The third-generation Ford Broncos, including the 1991 model, have been criticized for their underpowered engines, specifically the carburetor, which often led to poor performance, decreased fuel economy, and engine damage. Some owners have mentioned that these vehicles work well if they’re well-maintained. However, the fifth-generation Ford Broncos, particularly the 1990 and 1991 models, are plagued with transmission failures, faulty electrical systems, and rust issues. The 1990 model also tends to drop its oil pressure to zero when idle.

In summary, the 1991 Ford Bronco has several common problems, including transmission issues, engine problems such as oil leaks and poor gas mileage, and brake system troubles. The third and fifth-generation Ford Broncos, including the 1991 model, have faced criticism for their underpowered engines and transmission failures. It is essential to be aware of these issues when considering purchasing a 1991 Ford Bronco to avoid costly repairs and ensure preventive maintenance is performed to maximize the service life of the vehicle.

Negative 1991 Ford Bronco car reviews

  1. Jayde Reichel 2024-10-07

I bought this car as a way out of a terrible lease on a Toyota T100, which was the most awful vehicle I have ever driven. Although mechanics and people who like Broncos tell me that it's an excellent car just dying to be driven, I find it noisy to be inside, and the stick shift can get tiring. The armrests are designed for someone about 4 feet tall, so I can't use them. I had it repainted last summer, and it looks hot - very tough - yeah,

  2. Cordelia Wyman 2024-05-28

I have to admit, I really love this truck! As a Toyota fan for years, it's hard for me to say that. I actually bought it at an auction about a year ago.

Positive 1991 Ford Bronco car reviews

  1. Alan Jast 2024-08-10

Handles great in canyons, snow, and the city!

  2. Evert Reichert 2024-08-02

This vehicle is completely American. It has big, conservative styling, a comfortable interior, and a powerful engine, making it a true SUV. There is plenty of room both up front and in the back, and the back seat can be folded forward or removed altogether. It is also a reliable vehicle. The only thing that could be improved is the front seats, which are bucket seats. Some people may prefer a bench seat instead.

  3. Flavio Runolfsson 2024-07-01

I think this is a great vehicle if you can afford the gas on it.

  4. Dave O'Connell 2024-06-06

I had a Bronco for a little more than a year and loved it. It was my baby. Although I had some issues with my brakes and cracked my manifold twice due to my driving, those were the only reasons I took it in for repairs. I did need a new transmission, but besides that, it was perfect. I regret selling it because now I am looking to buy another one.

  5. Everardo Beahan 2024-06-06

The Bronco XLT is such a fantastic vehicle! It's a blast to drive both on and off the road.
