The Mazda Familia (Japanese: マツダ ファミリア, Matsuda Famiria), also marketed prominently as the Mazda 323, Mazda Protegé and Mazda Allegro, is a small family car that was manufactured by Mazda between 1963 and 2003. The Familia line was replaced by the Mazda3/Axela for 2004.

It was marketed as the Familia in Japan, which means "family" in Latin. For export, earlier models were sold with nameplates including: "800", "1000", "1200", and "1300". In North America, the 1200 was replaced by the Mazda GLC, with newer models becoming "323" and "Protegé". In Europe, all Familias sold after 1977 were called "323".

The Familia was also rebranded as the Ford Laser and Ford Meteor in Asia, Oceania, Southern Africa, some Latin American countries and, from 1991, as the Ford Escort and Mercury Tracer in North America. In addition, the Familia name was used as the Mazda Familia Wagon/Van, a badge-engineered version of the Nissan AD wagon (1994–2017) and Toyota Probox (2018–present).

Mazda Familias were manufactured in the Hiroshima Plant and also assembled from "knock-down kits" in various countries including Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Colombia, and New Zealand. Some of these plants kept manufacturing the Familia long after it was discontinued at home.

2001 Mazda Protege engine

Is the Mazda Protege 2001 a good car?

2001 Protege LX 2.0 was average car

Even with the upgraded 2.0 liter engine, this car is very under powered, and it requires premium fuel on top of being slow. I would not recommend this model unless you want mediocre performance and reliability.

Is a Mazda Protege a reliable car?

The Mazda Protege, a compact car produced between 1963 and 2003, is a hidden gem in the used car market, particularly for those on a budget. This vehicle is known for its reliability, fuel efficiency, and overall value, making it an excellent choice for cost-conscious buyers.

Does a Mazda Protege have a timing belt or chain?

The standard option was a 1.6L 4Cylinder and the upgraded models would have a 2.0L 4Cylinder. These engines both will use a timing belt system. These belts are expected to last up to 105,000 miles but it's more likely You'll need to have it changed out around the 75,000 to 90,000 mark.

What year did they stop making the Mazda Protege?

Interior room is spacious for a small sedan and includes a fairly comfortable rear seat. A four-door hatchback/wagon, called the Protegé5, joined the line. Large fog lights, wide tires, and exaggerated bodywork lend it a sportier appearance. It was discontinued after the 2003 model year, replaced by the Mazda 3.

  • Summary: WHILE ON A 300 MILE TRIP,\ I NOTICED A SLIGHT NOISE COMMING FROM MY REAR END. UPON MY RETURN HOME, THE NOISE GOT WORSE AND I TOOK IT TO A REPAIR SHOP AND FOUND THE BRAKE CALIPERS MALFUNCTIONED, AND A COMPLETE REAR END BRAKE JOB COSTING OVER $1,000.00 WAS REQUIRED. SINCE THE VEHICLE HAD ONLY 52,000 MILES ON IT AND WAS LESS THAN FOUR YEARS OLD I TOOK IT TO THE MAZDA DEALER, AND WAS TOLD SINCE IT WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. ALL THEY COULD DO WAS OFF $175.00 OFF THE BRAKE JOB(STILL OVER $1,000.00). ON A VEHICLE THIS NEW I FEEL THE CALIPERS SHOULD NOT HAVE FAILED. THE BRAKES STILL HAVE NOT BEEN REPLACED AS I AM STILL TRYING TO HAVE MAZDA PAY MORE OF THE COST. REPLACEMENT PARTS NEEDED ARE 2 REAR CALIPERS, 2 ROTORS, 2 SETS OF BRAKE PADS AND 2 BRAKE LINE HOSES.*AK

  • VIN: JM1BJ225610
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: I HEARD A STRANGE SOUND EVERY TIME I STARTED TO ACCELERATE WHICH I FIRST THOUGHT TO BE THE CAR IN THE NEXT LANE. I DROVE ONE MORE BLOCK AND TURNED THE CORNER, BUT THE STEERING WAS LOCKING AND I HAD GREAT DIFFICULTY TURNING. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO MY MECHANIC, COMBUSTION GASES WERE IN THE COOLING SYSTEM AND THE ENGINE HAD A CRACKED CYLINDER. THE CAR IS FOUR YEARS OLD (JUST OUT OF WARRANTY) WITH ONLY 31,483 MILES ON IT. I'M A GOOD DRIVER, 73 YEARS OLD WITH A CLEAN DRIVING RECORD AND HAVE NEVER HAD PROBLEMS WITH ANY CAR AS A RESULT OF MY DRIVING HABITS. I'VE OWNED MAZDA'S SINCE 1987 AND LOVED THEM (EVEN THIS CAR) BUT THIS WILL PROBABLY BE MY LAST. THE REPAIR REQUIRED A REBUILT ENGINE AT A COST OF $ 3,223.14.. *AK

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2004-08-15
  • VIN: 1YVGF22C015
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: PARKED THE CAR IN THE GROCERY STORE PARKING LOT AND WHEN RETURNING TO THE CAR TO LEAVE, STARTED THE CAR, BACKED OUT OF THE PARKING SPOT AND THEN PROCEEDED TO PUT THE CAR IN DRIVE AND LEAVE. WHEN I DID, THE CAR KEPT GOING IN REVERSE. I PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL, PARK, 2ND AND OVERDRIVE ALL WHICH THE CAR KEPT GOING IN REVERSE. FORTUNATELY, THE CAR BEHIND ME WAS NOT CLOSE ENOUGH NOR WERE THERE PEOPLE SURROUNDING THE CAR IMMEDIATELY THAT I COULD HAVE HIT BECAUSE OF THE PROBLEM WITH THE CAR. I LET THE CAR ROLL BACK IN TO A SPOT AND TURNED THE CAR OFF. WHEN I DID THE CAR WOULD NOT START AT ALL. I LEFT THE CAR THERE UNTIL I GOT THE CAR TOWED THE NEXT MORNING. THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER SAID IT WAS VERY FORTUNATE THAT THE CAR DID NOT ROLL AWAY OR SOMEONE STOLE IT BECAUSE WHILE IT WAS IN PARK, THE CAR COULD HAVE EASILY BEEN PUSHED AS HE DEMONSTRATED TO ME AND THE MECHANIC. THIS IS A 2001 CAR AND I FEEL LIKE THIS IS A SAFETY DEFECT. I HATE TO THINK ABOUT THE POSSIBLITY THAT I COULD HAVE STARTED TO DRIVE FORWARD ONLY TO HAVE THE CAR GO IN REVERSE AND HIT A PERSON OR CHILD. THIS FAULTY DEFECTY SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED BEFORE SOMEONE OR SOMETHING DOES GET HURT. SINCE THEN, THE MECHANICE HAS FIXED IT AND WAS A FAULTY SHIFT CABLE THAT HE REPLACED AND FOR ME VERY COSTLY BUT NOT AS COSTLY AS THE INJURY TO SOMEONE IF THIS CAR WOULD HAVE BACKED IN TO THEM.*AK

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

DROVE NORMALLY FOR NEXT 15 MILES TO WORK. WHEN LEAVING FOR LUNCH, TRANSMISSION FAILED COMPLETELY AFTER 15 SECONDS IN DRIVE. CAR IS 3 YRS 3 MONTHS OLD, WAS BOUGHT NEW AND HAD 53,000 MILES AT TIME OF FAILURE. CAR HAD BEEN CAREFULLY MAINTAINED ACCORDING TO MANUFACTURER'S SCHEDULE. DEALER'S SERVICE REP SAID CAR WAS OUT OF WARRANTY, AND WOULD NOT CONSIDER ANY ASSISTANCE DUE TO FACT THAT THE CAR HAD NOT BEEN MAINTAINED THERE. I CONTACTED AREA MANUFACTURER'S REP AND WAS TOLD SAME THING. TRIED ONE LAST TIME TO GET HELP BY CALLING DEALER'S SERVICE MANAGER - HE WAS ABLE TO GET MAZDA TO PAY FOR HALF OF A REBUILT TRANSMISSION (ABOUT $800), BUT BY THIS TIME (10 DAYS AFTER THE EVENT) I HAD ALREADY HAD THE CAR REPAIRED (REBUILT TRANS INSTALLED) AT ANOTHER SHOP, SO THE ASSISTANCE OFFER WAS WITHDRAWN. TOTAL REPAIRS COST ME $1835 (AS OPPOSED TO $2650 FROM MAZDA), AND CAR WAS OUT OF SERVICE FOR 9 DAYS. TRANSMISSIONS SHOULD NOT FAIL AT 53,000 MILES. THE TRANS SHOP I DEALT WITH SAID THEY SEE MAZDA PROTEGES AND 626S QUITE OFTEN WITH THIS SAME PROBLEM. I AM TRYING TO PURSUE COMPLETE REIMBURSEMENT OF MY OUT-OF-POCKET COSTS, AND WILL CONTINUE TO DO SO.*AK

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2004-05-28
  • VIN: JM1BJ222510
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: LAST NOVEMBER THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT CAME ON IN MY 2001 MAZDA PROTEGE. I IMMEDIATELY BROUGHT IT TO THE MAZDA DEALERSHIP, WHO SAID THAT THEIR WAS AN ERROR WITH THE CODE AND THEY CLEARED IT AND RECALIBRATED IT. THEY SAID IT HAD GONE OFF FOR NO APPARENT REASON. THREE MONTHS LATER (SHORTLY AFTER THE WARRANTY EXPIRED) THE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN. THIS TIME THE DEALERSHIP CLAIMED THAT THE CODE SAID THAT THE GAS CAP WAS NOT SCREWED ON TIGHT. THIS WAS NOT TRUE! WHEN THAT LIGHT CAME ON I IMMEDIATELY CHECKED THE GAS CAP SINCE THE OWNERS MANUAL TOLD ME THAT WAS ALL I COULD DO MYSELF (IT WAS TIGHT AS A DRUM). THE DEALERSHIP CLAIMED OTHERWISE-IT WAS MY WORD AGAINST THEIRS AND NATURALLY THEY WON. TWO WEEKS LATER THE LIGHT AGAIN CAME BACK ON. WHEN I TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP, THEY TOLD ME THAT THE CODE THIS TIME SAID MY SOLENOID WAS BAD (THE CAR WAS RUNNING GREAT). THE CHARGED ME $427 TO REPLACE IT AND SAID I SHOULD HAVE NO MORE PROBLEMS. ANOTHER COUPLE OF WEEKS GOES BY AND THE LIGHT AGAIN GOES OFF. THIS TIME THEY KEPT IT IN THE SHOP FOR 3 DAYS. THEY CLAIMED THAT THE CODE INDICATED IT WAS THE SOLENOIND (HOW COULD THAT BE SINCE IT WAS A BRAND NEW ONE?) THEY CLEARED THE CODE AND TEST DROVE IT FOR 50 MILES, IT DID NOT COME BACK ON. I BELIEVE THAT THE COMPUTER CONTROLLING THAT LIGHT IS DEFECTIVE AND GIVING OUT ERRONEOUS CODES SINCE I KNOW THAT MY GAS CAP WAS SECURELY TIGHTENED, AND HOW CODE IT POINT TO THE SOLENOID AFTER IT HAD BEEN REPLACED WITH A NEW ONE. THE DEALERSHIP WILL NOT REFUND THOSE REPAIR BILLS AND THE MAZDA CUSTOMER SERVICE WOULD ONLY REFER ME BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP. THEY DID NOT WANT TO HEAR ANY STATEMENTS FROM ME ABOUT A POSSIBLY DEFECTIVE PART. TOLD ME TO GET AN INDEPENDENT AUTO REPAIR PERSON'S ASSESSMENT. I CANNOT AFFORD THAT! PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS FOR ME. THE DEALERSHIP DID TELL ME THAT I'D NEVER BE ABLE TO GET MY CAR SMOGGED WITH THAT LIGHT ON AND I CAN'T LIVE WITH RUNNING BACK AND FORTH TO THE SHOP EVERY TIME IT GOES OFF. *LA

Negative 2001 Mazda Protege car reviews

The Protege outperformed its competition (Corolla, Civic, Sentra) in terms of handling, brakes, and overall tightness. With almost 40k on the car, it has proven to be incredibly reliable. Recently, I replaced the front and back pads and upgraded to 205/55/16 Fulda's due to the difficulty in finding the original 16

The new Mazda Proteges are decent, but some may find them underpowered. I have a 1994 DX with a 1.8L SOHC 4 cylinder engine that performs well. During my test drive of the 1.6L DOHC engine in the new Proteges, I found it to be lacking in power. Perhaps the 'Zoom Zoom' talk doesn't quite match the performance of the new models. However, some may still prefer the First Generation Proteges over the new ones.

Positive 2001 Mazda Protege car reviews

I'm so glad I kept this car for 130K! I did have to replace the struts to improve the ride, but it was definitely worth the investment. If you're in the market for one, I highly recommend looking for an ES model because it comes with ABS and side airbags. The ABS actually saved me from a collision once, so I feel much safer driving this little car with those modern safety features. Keep in mind that the ES requires more expensive tires, but I've had good luck with Kumho tires that fit the ES rim. Unfortunately, this car doesn't perform well in the snow with the factory rims and tires, but I solved that problem by buying snow tires on steel rims to use during Wisconsin winters.

Great mileage, at times getting 36+ on the interstate. Other than routine maintenance, I've never had a problem with almost 85,000 on the odometer. I highly recommend this car.

After my daughter hit a curb and got a flat tire, she called roadside assistance and had it changed. However, since she was 150 miles away from home, she needed to get a replacement tire. Despite being told by a Mazda dealer that the tire would take five days to arrive, she was not willing to wait that long. Instead of being forced to buy two new tires, she decided to look for other options.

Congratulations on your recent purchase of a 2001 Protege ES via private sale with only 24k miles! Mazdas are known for their reliability and longevity, and it's great to hear that you have had positive experiences with them in the past. The styling of the '01 Protege ES is definitely a standout feature, and it's wonderful to hear that you enjoy looking at it in your driveway. The interior styling and roominess of the ES are also impressive, as evidenced by the ample leg room in the back seat that your co-workers noticed. The spoiler is a nice touch that adds both style and functionality. Overall, it sounds like you made a fantastic choice in terms of quality and price. Enjoy your new ride!

This car drives beautifully. Your friend just got a new Accord and still prefers to drive your car because of the smooth transmission. The sound system is great and the design is nice both inside and out. While it drives smoothly, when you need to move quickly, pushing down on the pedal can be a pleasant surprise. It's good for driving comfortably or tearing through traffic like a nut. This car is even better than you expected!
