2007 Honda Civic problems

honda logo

The Honda Civic (Japanese: ホンダ・シビック, Hepburn: Honda Shibikku) is a series of automobiles manufactured by Honda since 1972. As of 2023, the Civic is positioned between the Honda Fit/City and Honda Accord in Honda's global car line-up.

The first-generation Civic was introduced in July 1972 as a two-door fastback sedan, followed by a three-door hatchback that September. With a 1,169 cc transverse engine and front-wheel drive like the British Mini, the car provided good interior space despite overall small dimensions. Initially gaining a reputation for being fuel-efficient, reliable and environmentally friendly, later iterations have become known for performance and sportiness, especially the Civic Type R, Civic VTi, Civic GTi and Civic SiR/Si.

The Civic has been repeatedly rebadged for international markets, and served as the basis for the Honda CR-X, the Honda CR-X del Sol, the Concerto, the first generation Prelude, the Civic Shuttle (later to become the Orthia) and the CR-V (which, by extension, was used as the basis for the Honda FR-V).

The Civic is one of the all-time best-selling automobiles in the world, with over 27 million units sold since 1972 as of 2021.

Common 2007 Honda Civic problems

The Honda Civic 2007 is known for several common problems, which are discussed in detail below.

  • Airbag Light Problems: Many Honda Civic drivers have reported the airbag light repeatedly coming on and off, depending on the presence of a passenger. This problem often develops after bringing the car in for a recall associated with the airbags. While the issue is minor, diagnosing and fixing the problem can be expensive and may not be worth it for some Civic owners.
  • Vibration and Rattle Issues: Honda Civic owners have reported strong vibrations or a rattle when driving their vehicles or switching gears. Replacing an engine mount can cost between $250 and $500, depending on the parts needed and cost of labor.
  • Engine and Transmission Problems: While engine and transmission problems are more common among older model Honda Civics, the 2007 model year is not immune to these issues. Transmission failures or engine block cracks can occur, both of which are extremely costly to repair. If a serious mechanical or electrical problem develops with the Honda Civic, the cost of repairing it may outweigh the cost of selling and replacing it.
  • Minor Issues: Other minor issues reported by Honda Civic owners include a failed battery, fading clearcoat, bad wheel bearings, sway bar links and ball joints, minor oil leaks, and A/C issues. While these issues are not as costly as the ones mentioned above, they can still be frustrating for Civic owners.

In summary, the Honda Civic 2007 is known for several common problems, including AC system issues, airbag light problems, vibration and rattle issues, engine and transmission problems, and minor issues. While some of these problems can be expensive to fix, regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent them from becoming serious issues.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-14
  • VIN: 2HGFG11837H
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Cracked engine block to the front, lower passenger sideof the engine block behind of the catalytic converter. Issue unknowingly began when commuting on the freeway until car was left parked for an hour. Coolant had puddled under the car in that time and upon inspection noted dried blue coolant sprayed all across the under side of the car originating from the cracked area indicating I was still driving when the leak started without any warnings. Given how much coolant leaked over that hour, this could cause rapid engine overheat while driving if the leak remains unknown. After some research, Honda knew about this manufacturing defect for a number of years and issued an extended warranty but those have all since expired, while engines are continuing to crack and fail.

Of course people start to get upset due to the car doesn’t run as expected on the road. Mechanic changed the 3rd clutch for the transmission but after one week I h am having the same issue again. Transmission issues are very expensive and needs a very experienced mechanic to take care of it. The issue was confirmed by mechanic and certified mechanic place. I had to tow my car and costed my a lot of money. I will attach the communication with the insurance company.

SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-01-01
  • VIN: 1HGFA16857L
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: UNKNOWN. This has been an ongoing problem for years. I finally retired and had enough time to trace it down Water was getting on the floor of my car on passenger side after substantial rainfall. Extended shoulder harness webbing as far as it would go and found webbing soaking wet from water on last 2 feet of webbing that could be exposed and assume webbing still wet hidden within sidewall panel. (Nobody used the shoulder harness on passenger side of car) Taped off sunroof and doors on that side and found when using a water hose, water was getting into the passenger shoulder harness area and also dripping out of shoulder harness sidewall height adjuster. Removed the roof moulding trim strip on right side of roof, inspected, found no body seam sealant had been applied at the factory in the area where roof and side panel of car was spot welded when manufactured. Welds are still ok but an exposed gap was missing body seam-sealant along the area starting about 18 inches aft of windshield. I purchased seam sealant at body shop and applied seam sealant myself. Rechecked for leakage after sealant cure. Was ok. Re-installed roof moulding trim strip. Not sure if any water damage has occurred to shoulder harness mechanism. No apparent binding of mechanism at this time.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-12-17
  • VIN: 2HGFG12647H
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Honda put out a warranty extension of ten years for certain Civic models for a known casting issue that led to a cracked engine block. Rather than issuing a recall, they settled some law suits and did a warranty extension. I recently purchased a 2007 Civic from a relative who was unaware of the warranty extension. The car is five years passed the warranty expiration and Honda will do nothing to assist with this very well known issue! I find it completely unfair and unprofessional of Honda to offer no assistance for an issue they admitted full fault to! I now have a cracked engine block and no help from the once reliable auto dealer. I would be more understanding if this wasn't an issue that causes catastrophic failure, but this is unacceptable. I firmly believe that Honda should issue a recall for the known issues and resolve them in a responsible manner.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-11-23
  • VIN: 1HGFA16897L
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: Both sun visors (driver and passenger) fail to stay in their position, resulting in them rotating down, CREATING A SAFETY HAZARD; OBSTRUCTING VISIBILITY THRU FRONT WINDSHIELD. Additionally because the visors don't stay in their position, they hang down creating AN IMMEDIATE SAFETY HAZARD to any unsuspecting occupant getting into or out of the vehicle because you STRIKE YOUR HEAD ON THE MISPOSITIONED VISORS. The driver side visor on our vehicle has been replaced twice (10-21-2010, mileage 21188 and 7-3-2012, mileage 27839 under TSB). It is well over due needing to be replaced a third time. It appears only after a class action lawsuit Cooper v. American Honda Motor Co., Inc., did Honda issue TSB 11-031 to replace driver side (ds) visors. THE ROOT CAUSE OF THE FAILURE AND THE CONSEQUENCE, OBSTRUCTED VISIBILITY AND IMMEDIATE STRIKING HAZARDS HAVE NOT BEEN ADDRESSED AND CONTINUES TO OCCUR. I have contacted, 8-1-2022, Honda's Customer Service and reported this reoccurring issue to them and they said they have no obligation to address the visor issue due to the age and mileage limitations established in THEIR service bulletin. Our vehicle has only 97591 miles on it. Well below the mileage limit. What gives them the right to establish the duration of liability for their defective product? SAFETY SHOULD BE THEIR NUMBER ONE CONCERN. Please give me some guidance as to how to proceed to address this immediate safety issue with my vehicle. This inherent problem revealed itself 4 years after purchase. Honda has NOT CORRECTED THE PROBLEM. Please send me a response you received this submission. Thank you. PS How do I attach a video of visors rotating unassisted?

STEERING,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-06-27
  • VIN: 1HGFA16887L
  • Components: STEERING,ENGINE
  • Summary: I have a 2007 Honda Civic with 129K miles. 5/27/2022: First, we had a leak on drivers side and had to replace the steering rack, tie rod ends, hoses which cost $3K. Exactly a month later, my car started leaking from the passenger side. They stated the engine block is cracked and need a new engine. There was a recall but since it is past the 10 year mark, they will not fix it. It wasn't even a true recall bc we got absolutely NO communication about this! I am not spending another $4K to get a new engine. This is completely ridiculous and irresponsible of Honda!!!

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-03-01
  • VIN: 1HGFA16837L

  • Summary: I purchased this Honda Civic In February 2022. I immediately had to have a O2 Sensor replaced. A few days later the car starting running hot and all the antifreeze leaked out. I replaced the antifreeze and had several mechanics look at it. Now the Honda dealer tells me the Engine block is cracked. I know Honda settled a class action lawsuit for this exact reason (engine block cracked) in Honda Civics 2006-2009. Now I can't use my car. I need your assistance in getting my car repaired by Honda due to the nature of the history of the Engine Crack recalls. Thank you

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-12-19
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • VIN: 1HGFA16827L
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: My engine block has cracked. I own an 07 Honda Civic. It overheated on the road and the only way to get it home was drive 15-20 mph even on highways. Honda knows there was a manufacturing defect from 06-2010 and all they did was extend the warranty from ten years of date of purchase. Meaning all of us who bought ours from another owner aren’t covered anymore. This keeps happening time and time again with countless Honda owners. It’s time something is done about this.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-11-04
  • VIN: 1HGFA16857L
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: My Civic was diagnosed with a cracked engine block, an issue known by Honda to be problematic, as they issued an extended warranty on the engines that ended in 2018. However, the extension has expired despite the fact that many Honda owners continue to experience this problem (see https://www.8thcivic.com/threads/documenting-cracked-engine-block-for-those-out-of-the-warranty-coverage.609546/page-7). This issue should be considered more serious than just an extended warranty, as an engine leaking coolant could easily overheat and cause serious problems on a road trip, especially in the part of the country I live in (Montana), where summers are hot and dry and wildfires are easily ignited. The Carfax report for the vehicle I own--which I purchased used in September 2021--suggested that this would be the perfect vehicle to buy, with a regular maintenance history and lower-than-usual mileage. No indication at all of an extended warranty or potential issues that I should be aware of. Fortunately a friend discovered the issue when he noticed coolant leaking when he changed a tire for me rather than me discovering it while driving to Colorado or Michigan to visit family, when the engine may have indeed leaked enough coolant without me noticing to cause serious problems. I am attaching the report from the mechanic who diagnosed the issue, which I sent to Honda to open a case for assistance with a repair (which they declined, citing the expiration of the extended warranty).

I had my 2007 EX coupe for 80,000 miles and 6 years. Throughout my ownership, I learned that Honda is a reliable brand that stands behind their products. Whenever there was a recall, Honda was quick to address the issue. For example, I received a recall notice for a bolt failure on the water pump pulley. Unfortunately, the bolt broke and the pulley fell out of the engine bay, causing damage to a belt. However, Honda fixed the issue for free and I was back on the road in no time. I also received a recall notice for a visor failure, which was promptly replaced free of charge. Although I had to replace a motor mount at my own expense due to a TSB, Honda was quick to address the issue and provide a solution. In the fifth year of ownership, I noticed that the paint on the roof had rapidly oxidized under the clearcoat, which was disappointing. However, Honda recognized the issue and repainted my Civic for free. Finally, I learned of a TSB for engine block failure, which could cause the block to crack and leak coolant. Honda extended the warranty to 10 years to cover this issue, which gave me peace of mind. Overall, I enjoyed owning my Civic and appreciated Honda's commitment to addressing any issues that arose. The potential engine block problem was concerning, but I was able to sell the car while the warranty was still in effect.

Hello! I wanted to share my experience with my Honda car. I bought it brand new and have taken good care of it, but unfortunately, I've had some issues. I've had to replace the tires twice and even though I have them rotated regularly, the guys at the shop say they have uneven wear. The rear tires are also quite noisy. Additionally, my sun visor broke. I'm hoping that Honda will consider doing a recall on this model year, as I believe it may be a factory defect. I'm a bit disappointed, but I'm hopeful that Honda will stand behind their product. Thank you for listening to my concerns.

I purchased this car used with 32,000 miles and have since driven it for 64,000 miles. While it is a great looking car and enjoyable to drive, I have experienced some issues with its build quality and reliability. Unfortunately, the rear control arms caused damage to two sets of tires, but I am currently working with Honda to resolve this issue. On one road trip, a sensor failed and I was unable to exceed 50 miles per hour, which was concerning for safety reasons. Additionally, the dome lights and third brake light have been intermittent. Recently, I had to replace the motor mount due to excessive vibrations and noise when shifting from park to reverse. The road noise can also be quite loud. Overall, my experience with Honda has been disappointing.

Hello! I have a 2007 Honda Civic EX coupe with only 99k miles. Unfortunately, due to a manufacturing defect, the engine block has cracked. I found out that Honda has a service bulletin #10-048 which states that the 2007 Civic and other years have a manufacturing defect. On Dec. 25th, 2017, while on my way to my family's house for Christmas, my Civic started overheating and I had to pull over to the side of the road due to the overheating and smoke coming from the engine. After looking under the hood, I saw that there was no coolant in the reservoir and I couldn't detect a coolant leak. The next day, Dec. 26th, 2017, I replaced the thermostat on my Civic presuming that the thermostat was sticking and coolant was not circulating. Unfortunately, that was not the case because yet again the next day, Dec. 27th, 2017, it overheated and I had to pull over to the side of the road and noticed a severe coolant leak coming from the engine block. When I got the car home, I did some research and noticed a Honda service bulletin (above) and saw that we were not the only ones having this issue. We called American Honda and they started a case for us and recommended that we take it to our local Honda to be inspected further. We made an appointment for the inspection and after Honda inspected it, they diagnosed it with a cracked engine block. This is due to their faulty, defective product. I believe that Honda should stand behind their product and fix the issue. This car was meticulously maintained by my local Honda and has been in the family. We were never notified of this bulletin, or else we would have brought our Civic in sooner before the supposed extra 10-year warranty expired. It shouldn't matter how many years have passed; Honda knows that this is an ongoing issue and it will continue to happen if it doesn't get taken care of the right way. This could potentially be a dangerous situation, and I believe Honda needs to step up and take responsibility.

Honda has acknowledged that engines in 2006-2009 Civics have a tendency to develop engine block cracks as they age, and extended the warranty to 10 years. Although we experienced this problem when we were stranded many miles from home, we have confidence in the quality of our well-maintained Civic. While we have had other maintenance issues with this and other Hondas, we believe that these are isolated incidents. Although we are past the extended warranty period, we appreciate Honda's acknowledgement of the issue and their efforts to address it. We remain loyal to the Honda brand and look forward to continued reliability and performance from our vehicles.

I waited for almost four months for my hybrid, but it was definitely worth the wait. I've been driving it for two months now, and I have no complaints. I really appreciate the gauge layout, and I don't mind the emergency brake handle. I've had a few cars in the past that I couldn't see the front of from inside, but this one is just fine. I was a little worried about the acceleration at first, but I had no problem passing someone on my first day with the car. I wasn't sure how it would handle the Minnesota cold, but it did great. This car really teaches you to drive efficiently. I was getting around 50mpg when it was warmer, but it dropped a bit in the cold. I'm not sure if global warming is real, but just in case it is, I'm trying to do my part to pollute as little as possible.

Just like the other 4 Hondas we have had in the family, this one has reached 150,000 miles and is just getting broken in. We have only needed to perform routine maintenance over the years. Now it's time for one of the kids to inherit it as we upgrade to the 2016 model. We couldn't ask for a better or more reliable car. It gets 42 MPG on the highway and 35 around town. Even in Socal driving, it still gets 35 MPG. This car is great and we won't be trading it in!

  3. Tomas Nitzsche 2024-09-19

This car is so much fun! The ergonomic design is almost perfect, and the handling is tight. The acceleration is surprisingly good too. I bought this car for my wife, but now I'm thinking of getting one for myself.

  4. Hillard Rempel 2024-09-12

The car is incredible! The handling and performance of that vehicle would leave you speechless. The sound of the I-Vtec motor is more than great. Honda should be proud of this beauty.

  5. Garrison Cormier 2024-08-15

This car is definitely worth the investment! As someone who has been driving BMWs for over two decades, I was hesitant to switch to a commuter car for work and shopping. However, the new 07 Civic EX Sedan caught my eye with its affordable price and great features. While it may not have the same solid build quality as a BMW, I still believe it deserves high praise. It's the perfect car for day-to-day driving and running errands!
