1993 Honda Civic problems
The Honda Civic (Japanese: ホンダ・シビック, Hepburn: Honda Shibikku) is a series of automobiles manufactured by Honda since 1972. As of 2023, the Civic is positioned between the Honda Fit/City and Honda Accord in Honda's global car line-up.
The first-generation Civic was introduced in July 1972 as a two-door fastback sedan, followed by a three-door hatchback that September. With a 1,169 cc transverse engine and front-wheel drive like the British Mini, the car provided good interior space despite overall small dimensions. Initially gaining a reputation for being fuel-efficient, reliable and environmentally friendly, later iterations have become known for performance and sportiness, especially the Civic Type R, Civic VTi, Civic GTi and Civic SiR/Si.
The Civic has been repeatedly rebadged for international markets, and served as the basis for the Honda CR-X, the Honda CR-X del Sol, the Concerto, the first generation Prelude, the Civic Shuttle (later to become the Orthia) and the CR-V (which, by extension, was used as the basis for the Honda FR-V).
The Civic is one of the all-time best-selling automobiles in the world, with over 27 million units sold since 1972 as of 2021.

Common 1993 Honda Civic problems
Based on complaints from owners of the 1993 Honda Civic, several common problems have been reported:
- Transmission Failure: One of the most significant issues reported for the 1993 Honda Civic is transmission failure. This problem can be costly to fix, with an average cost of around $2,300. Owners have experienced this issue at an average mileage of 105,000 miles. Transmission problems can lead to difficulties in shifting gears, slipping gears, or complete transmission failure, impacting the car's drivability and safety.
- Clear Coat Peeling: Another common problem reported for the 2009 Honda Civic is clear coat peeling. This issue can affect the car's appearance, leading to a deteriorated paint finish. The average cost to fix this problem is around $3,100, and it typically occurs at an average mileage of 63,000 miles. Clear coat peeling can make the car look older and less well-maintained, affecting its overall aesthetic appeal.
- Other Issues: While transmission failure and clear coat peeling are among the most reported problems, owners of the 1993 Honda Civic have also mentioned issues like rust, engine idling problems, alternator issues, and oil leaks. These additional problems can impact the car's performance, reliability, and overall maintenance costs.
Addressing these common problems requires timely maintenance, regular inspections, and prompt repairs. Owners of the 1993 Honda Civic should be vigilant about monitoring their car's transmission performance, addressing any signs of clear coat peeling early on, and conducting routine checks for rust and other potential issues. Regular servicing, including oil changes, fluid checks, and inspections by a qualified mechanic, can help prevent these common problems and ensure the longevity of the vehicle.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my first new car, a Honda Civic EX Coupe back in 1993. I absolutely loved owning and driving it! The Civic EX Coupe had so many great power features, like power windows, a moonroof, power steering, great brakes, power mirrors, and amazing gas mileage. While it can be a bit light weight and noisy on hills and mountain roads, the four cylinder V-Tec engine with 125hp can handle most situations. My favorite feature of this car is definitely the power moonroof, which is something rarely offered on cars of this class. And of course, you can't go wrong with Honda's reliability. All I needed to do was keep up with normal maintenance and it was good to go! Thanks for listening to my story.
-
This has been an amazing car! I love telling people about how great the fuel economy is, how reliable it has been, and how low the maintenance costs are. Even though it's sixteen years old, it still looks and runs like a dream. I can't bring myself to sell it, even though we now have two newer Civics!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share a little bit about my Civic with you. I actually bought it in Texas, but the original owner took it all the way up to Toronto before eventually settling in Montreal. I ended up purchasing it in 2005 for a steal at $2200! I've taken it on some amazing adventures, including a cross-country trip from Montreal all the way to Banff. The best part? It only cost me $310 in gas! Since I've owned it, I've put about $1100 into repairs and maintenance, but nothing too major - just things like the brake cylinder, radiator, thermo, and bushings. All in all, it's been a great car and I'm so glad I bought it.
-
This is my third Honda out of five, and it's my absolute favorite! It even outlasted my 2002 Civic. I drove it for almost 200k miles before upgrading to the 2002 model. After that, I lent it to a friend who needed a car for two years, then again for a year, and then to my niece and her boyfriend for a few months. Now, it's going to be my daughter's car with over 250k miles on it! It still gets 40mpg with mixed highway and mountain driving, and it has had no engine issues and only two clutches. There's no rust or alignment issues, and it's fast, smooth, comfortable, and even makes a great pickup truck. We plan to keep it until it dies!
-
I bought this car at an auction in February 2002 for $775. Unfortunately, it had been in an accident and was left to deteriorate. However, I was able to replace the front passenger side suspension with ease, thanks to Honda's user-friendly design. Since then, I have driven the car for 20,000 miles and have only had to replace the axles. The car handles well, even with a liberal suspension setup, and can easily take corners at 90 degrees. The brakes are acceptable, but not great due to the rear drum configuration. The trunk is well-sized for the car, but the tank is a bit too small. The blower motor could use some improvement, and the car could benefit from an extra 30 horsepower.

Hi there! I recently purchased a Civic with 97,000 miles on it and have had it for about 2 months now. However, I've noticed that it doesn't have as much power as I was hoping for and the gas mileage is poor, only about 20 miles in mixed driving. Additionally, the tank is quite small so I have to fill it up every week. Have you experienced anything similar with your Civic?
