2005 Honda Civic hybrid problems
The Honda Civic (Japanese: ホンダ・シビック, Hepburn: Honda Shibikku) is a series of automobiles manufactured by Honda since 1972. As of 2023, the Civic is positioned between the Honda Fit/City and Honda Accord in Honda's global car line-up.
The first-generation Civic was introduced in July 1972 as a two-door fastback sedan, followed by a three-door hatchback that September. With a 1,169 cc transverse engine and front-wheel drive like the British Mini, the car provided good interior space despite overall small dimensions. Initially gaining a reputation for being fuel-efficient, reliable and environmentally friendly, later iterations have become known for performance and sportiness, especially the Civic Type R, Civic VTi, Civic GTi and Civic SiR/Si.
The Civic has been repeatedly rebadged for international markets, and served as the basis for the Honda CR-X, the Honda CR-X del Sol, the Concerto, the first generation Prelude, the Civic Shuttle (later to become the Orthia) and the CR-V (which, by extension, was used as the basis for the Honda FR-V).
The Civic is one of the all-time best-selling automobiles in the world, with over 27 million units sold since 1972 as of 2021.

Common 2005 Honda Civic hybrid problems
The Honda Civic Hybrid, produced between 2001 and 2015, has been known for certain problems, particularly in its early years. The 2005 model, in particular, has been identified as the worst model year due to transmission problems, which were a common issue in the early models of the Civic Hybrid.
Transmission issues in the 2005 Honda Civic Hybrid can manifest as delays in car deceleration or acceleration, slipping out of gear, and shakes or vibrations. These problems can be caused by a faulty continuously variable transmission (CVT), which can lead to unpredictable acceleration or deceleration, slipping in and out of gear, and even dangerous situations where the car may speed up or slow down unexpectedly while driving.
Another significant issue with the 2005 Honda Civic Hybrid is the unreliable batteries that were a recurring problem from 2006 onwards. The hybrid battery lifespan is variable and depends on the car's usage, but cars from this era notoriously have a shorter-than-expected battery life. This can lead to issues such as the engine not turning off when the car has stopped, battery failure, and problems with vehicle power dropping off. Signs of a failing battery include a rapidly changing vehicle charge, warning lights appearing, loss of power during acceleration, and poor fuel efficiency.
In addition to transmission and battery problems, the 2005 Honda Civic Hybrid has also been known to have issues with the 12-volt battery and alternator. These problems can cause issues with the car's electrical systems, such as the air conditioner not staying on, power steering stopping, and the EPS light coming on and off. To diagnose these issues, it is recommended to take a voltage reading with a multimeter on the battery, both when the car is off and when it is running. If the voltage is under 12 volts when the car is off or not reaching 13+ volts when the car is running, it may indicate an issue with the battery or alternator.
In summary, the 2005 Honda Civic Hybrid has been known for transmission problems, unreliable batteries, and issues with the 12-volt battery and alternator. These issues can lead to a variety of problems with the car's performance and electrical systems, and can be expensive to fix. Regular servicing and monitoring of the car's battery and electrical systems can help prolong the life of the car and prevent unexpected breakdowns.
How long will a 2005 Honda Civic hybrid battery last?
Your Honda hybrid battery life expectancy is between 6 to 10 years or up to 100,000 miles. Other Honda hybrid battery options can last a little bit longer on Woodinville roads for about 10 years or even closer to 150,000 miles.

THE PARTS HAD TO BE ORDERED. AS OF TODAY, SATURDAY APRIL 11 WE HAVE NOT HEARD ANYTHING FROM THE DEALER ABOUT RECEIVING THESE PARTS AND BEING ABLE TO MAKE THE REPAIRS. I WENT ONLINE TO HONDA AND FOUND THAT THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS RECALL AND THE PART MALFUNCTION HAS CAUSED SOME DEATHS. HONDA'S INFORMATION ONLINE ALSO STATED WE COULD GET A REPLACEMENT VEHICLE IF THE PARTS NEEDED TO BE ORDERED. WE WERE NEVER OFFERED THIS. WE NEED THIS VEHICLE AND CANNOT GO WITHOUT A CAR. *TR
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-03-21
- VIN: JHMES96675S
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: THE VEHICLE SHUTTERS DURING INITIAL TAKEOFF FROM A STOP. IT FEELS LIKE THE CAR WANTS TO START FROM SECOND OR THIRD GEAR. I HAVE CHECKED ALL THE FLUIDS AND THEY APPEAR TO BE AT NORMAL AND ACCEPTABLE OPERATING LEVELS. THE LACK OF ACCELERATION AND THE HESITATION FROM THE CAR MAKE IT DIFFICULT TO MERGE INTO TRAFFIC. THIS IS TRULY A SAFETY CONCERN WHEN TURNING FROM 2-WAY STOP SIGNS OR TURNING RIGHT AT A STOP LIGHT. ONCOMING TRAFFIC COULD BE COMING AT EXCESSIVE SPEEDS AND WITH THE SLOW ACCELERATION AND SHUTTER, I FEAR THIS VEHICLE'S CVT WILL FAIL. *TR

- Summary: THIS CAR HAS AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION. WHEN IN REVERSE IT STRUGGLES TO MOVE AND HONDA SAYS THE TRANSMISSION NEEDS TO BE REPLACED BUT IT ONLY HAS 55,900 MILES ON IT. HONDA STATES THAT ONLY THEY CAN WORK ON THE CVT TRANSMISSION AND OF COURSE CAN CONTROL PARTS AND LABOR COST AND THEY WILL NOT SELL PARTS TO OUTSIDE MECHANICS. IT SEEMS LIKE A SCHEME TO MAKE MONEY OFF OF CUSTOMERS OFF OF A UNRELIABLE PART. CHECKING THE INTERNET THERE SEEMS TO BE A LOT OF COMPLAINTS. A NORMAL AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENT CHARGE PARTS AND LABOR IS AROUND $1800 BUT HONDA WANTS $4200 TO $4900. *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2012-08-01
- VIN: JHMES96685S
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: I HAVE HAD MY HCH 2005 AT THE DEALERSHIP SEVERAL TIMES SINCE I BOUGHT IT IN 2011. IT HAS HAD THE RECALL UPDATES AS THEY WERE RECEIVED. MY MIL (CHECK ENGINE LIGHT) IS ON CONSTANT. I HAVE REPLACED ALL 3 OXYGEN SENSORS AND THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER EVEN AFTER HAVING THE RECALL DONE FOR THE SECONDARY AND THIRD OXYGEN SENSORS. THE LIGHT WILL NOT GO OFF. WHEN TAKEN TO THE DEALER THEY SAID IT WAS THE OXYGEN SENSORS AND WANTED $1,100 TO REPLACE THEM. BUT THEY ARE NEW SO I KNOW THAT'S NOT THE PROBLEM. NOW I HAVE LEARNED THERE WAS SOME KIND OF RECALL THAT THEY FAILED TO INFORM ME OF THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO UPDATE THE ECM AND KEEP THE PROBLEM I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO FIX FROM HAPPENING. ALSO HAD THE JUDDERING ISSUE AND 5 MONTHS AFTER THE DEALER FIXED THE PROBLEM IT STARTED AGAIN. THEY SAID THAT IT HAD TO BE SOMETHING ELSE AND THE RECALL WOULD NOT COVER A SECOND REPAIR. SO NOW I HAVE A CAR THAT HAS A JUDDER AT TAKEOFF AND CANNOT BE INSPECTED BECAUSE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON. I CANNOT TAKE IT TO HAVE THE NEWEST RECALL FIXED WITH THE AIRBAGS. I HAVE PUT OVER $500 IN IT TO GET THE LIGHT OFF SO IT COULD PASS THE EMISSIONS TEST BUT STILL NOT OFF. AND I THINK THAT HONDA SHOULD HAVE RECALLED ALL OF THESE CARS AND JUNKED THEM. I AM A VERY UPSET CONSUMER AND FEEL THAT SOMETHING SHOULD BE DONE ABOUT ALL THESE ISSUES. I WILL BE SUBMITTING MY REPAIR COSTS LABOR AND PARTS FOR REIMBURSEMENT BECAUSE I FEEL LIKE HONDA SHOULD HAVE DONE A BETTER JOB. *TR
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-06-28
- VIN: JHMES96615S
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: CERTIFIED HONDA SERVICE LOCATIONS WOULD SUGGEST REPLACING THE ENTIRE TRANSMISSION AT A SUBSTANTIAL COST THIS ISSUE HAS NOTABLE SAFETY HAZARDS AS IT LIMITS DRIVERS' ABILITIES TO ACCELERATE AT LOW SPEEDS, PARTICULARLY TO AVOID A COLLISION. THIS ISSUE SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED AS IT STILL IMPACTS MANY VEHICLES ON THE ROAD IN THE US. I TRIED TO TRADE THIS CAR IN FOR A NEWER HONDA CIVIC AND THEY DEGRADED MY CARS VALUE DUE TO THE TRANSMISSION ISSUES. I DID NOT MAKE THE DEFECTIVE PART THEY DID AND WANT ME TO PAY FOR IT. THIS IS WRONG FOR HONDA DO CONSUMERS THIS WAY. *TR

- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver frontal air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began on July 1, 2015. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Owners may contact Acura customer service at 1-800-382-2238, select option 4. Note: Vehicles that have had their driver frontal air bag replaced previously as part of a recall remedy prior to September 12, 2014 need to have their air bag replaced under this recall as well. Vehicles that, on or after September 12, 2014, received a remedy for a prior driver frontal air bag inflator recall already received an inflator of a different design, and therefore are not included in this recall and do not require additional servicing. Note: This recall fully supersedes recalls 08V-593, 09V-259, 10V-041, 11V-260, 14V-351 and 15V-153. Honda's numbers for this recall are JQ9, JR0, JR1, JR2, JR3, JR4, JR5, JR6, JR7, and JR8.
