2008 Honda Civic hybrid problems
The Honda Civic (Japanese: ホンダ・シビック, Hepburn: Honda Shibikku) is a series of automobiles manufactured by Honda since 1972. As of 2023, the Civic is positioned between the Honda Fit/City and Honda Accord in Honda's global car line-up.
The first-generation Civic was introduced in July 1972 as a two-door fastback sedan, followed by a three-door hatchback that September. With a 1,169 cc transverse engine and front-wheel drive like the British Mini, the car provided good interior space despite overall small dimensions. Initially gaining a reputation for being fuel-efficient, reliable and environmentally friendly, later iterations have become known for performance and sportiness, especially the Civic Type R, Civic VTi, Civic GTi and Civic SiR/Si.
The Civic has been repeatedly rebadged for international markets, and served as the basis for the Honda CR-X, the Honda CR-X del Sol, the Concerto, the first generation Prelude, the Civic Shuttle (later to become the Orthia) and the CR-V (which, by extension, was used as the basis for the Honda FR-V).
The Civic is one of the all-time best-selling automobiles in the world, with over 27 million units sold since 1972 as of 2021.

Common 2008 Honda Civic hybrid problems
Based on complaints from owners of the Honda Civic Hybrid 2008, several common problems have been reported:
- Software Flaw: Honda issued a technical service bulletin in 2008 to address a software flaw affecting Civic Hybrids from 2006 to 2008. The software reprogramming limited the battery's charge and discharge levels, impacting the vehicle's electric assist and overall performance. This fix led to complaints of reduced acceleration and fuel economy, with owners describing the "fixed" Civic Hybrid as underpowered and lacking in performance.
- Transmission Problems: Early models of the Civic Hybrid, particularly those from 2001 to 2005, faced issues with their continuously variable transmission (CVT). Transmission problems could manifest as delays in acceleration/deceleration, slipping in and out of gear, unusual noises, or vibrations. These issues could pose safety risks and require costly repairs.
- Engine Not Turning Off: Some owners of Civic Hybrids from 2006 to 2010 reported instances where the engine did not turn off even when the car had stopped. This problem, along with battery failure and power loss issues, affected the hybrid system's functionality and overall performance.
- Poor Fuel Efficiency: Despite being a hybrid vehicle, some owners have expressed dissatisfaction with the Civic Hybrid's fuel efficiency, reporting MPG figures lower than expected for a hybrid car. Factors such as battery health, software updates, and component replacements can influence the vehicle's overall fuel economy.
These problems highlight various challenges faced by owners of the Honda Civic Hybrid 2008, ranging from battery and software issues to transmission and fuel efficiency concerns. Addressing these issues may require battery replacements, software updates, transmission repairs, and regular maintenance to ensure optimal performance and reliability of the vehicle.
