Hyundai Sonata 2014 problems
The Hyundai Sonata (Korean: 현대 쏘나타) is a mid-size car that has been manufactured by Hyundai since 1985. The first generation Sonata, which was introduced in 1985, was a facelifted version of the Hyundai Stellar with an engine upgrade, and was withdrawn from the market in two years due to poor customer reaction. While the nameplate was originally only sold in South Korea, the second generation of 1988 was widely exported.
The Sonata is currently manufactured in South Korea where their headquarters are located, China and Pakistan. It was named after the musical term, sonata.
First generation (Y1; 1985)
The first Sonata was introduced to compete with the Daewoo Royale series and was a more luxurious version of the Stellar. It included cruise control, power seats, head lamp washers, power brakes, electric operated adjustable side mirrors and chrome bumper trims. The Sonata was available with two trim options in Korea: Luxury and Super (the latter only available with a 2.0-liter engine). In the domestic market Hyundai attempted to sell the Sonata as an executive car using catchphrases like "Luxury car for VIP"; however, as the Sonata was based on the Stellar without any major changes, it was seen by the public as no more than a luxury version of the Stellar. In 1987 Hyundai added two tone color schemes and a trip computer option, but sales soon went down and the car was discontinued in December of that year. The Sonata was sold only in the South Korean domestic market. The vehicle was unveiled in South Korea on 4 November 1985.
Engine choices included 1.6-liter Mitsubishi Saturn (only available outside the domestic market), 1.8- and 2.0-liter Mitsubishi Sirius inline-fours. The latter unit also found its way into the 1987 and later Stellar, and in MPI form the 1986 Hyundai Grandeur. The body was a largely unchanged Hyundai Stellar.
It was sold in New Zealand (right hand drive) with the 1.6-liter Mitsubishi engine with the five-speed manual gearbox; an automatic transmission was an optional extra. The original importer was a unit of the Auckland-based Giltrap Motor Group.
The final version of the Stellar was known as the Stellar 88 and was launched to celebrate the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Afterwards, Hyundai discontinued the Stellar and replaced it with the all-new Sonata.

Common Hyundai Sonata 2014 problems
The 2014 Hyundai Sonata has been reported to have several common issues, including engine problems, electrical issues, and steering difficulties.
Engine problems are a significant concern for the 2014 Hyundai Sonata, with many owners reporting engine fires, seatbelt failures, and a risk of engine seizure. In 2017, Hyundai issued a recall for certain Sonata models due to a seatbelt linkage that was not properly connected to the pretensioner, which could result in the passenger not being properly restrained during a collision, increasing the risk of injury or death.
Electrical issues are another common problem for the 2014 Hyundai Sonata, with many owners reporting faulty exterior lighting, such as headlights that burn out frequently, arc, or short-circuit almost inexplicably.
Steering difficulties are also a concern for the 2014 Hyundai Sonata, with many owners reporting that the steering wheel will sometimes stop turning, aiming the car in a straight line, and refusing to budge. Other times, the wheel will get so loose that it leads a serpentine path down the road. Both issues are due to a coupling linkage on the steering column that is made of plastic, which rubs against metal components around it and eventually wears down and breaks, leading to steering difficulties.
In summary, the 2014 Hyundai Sonata has several common issues, including engine problems, electrical issues, and steering difficulties. These problems can be severe and potentially life-threatening, and Hyundai has been criticized for its slow response to addressing these issues. Consumers should approach the Sonata generation from 2011-2014 with caution and get it inspected by a mechanic prior to purchasing.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-01
- VIN: 5NPEB4ACXEH
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: My passenger side rear door will not open from the outside or the inside. You pull the handle on the outside and nothing happens. You push the door from the inside and nothing even budges (the door lock still works not that there's a use for it right now). This seems to me to be a safety risk for anyone that has to sit in the backseat behind the front passenger seat. If there were an emergency, they would not be able to open the door to get out. I have Googled this and it seems to happen quite frequently in Hyundai cars. It's the door actuator. If this happens a lot, then I think Hyundai needs to take a deeper look into their door actuators. Thank goodness I do not have kids in a car seat because I would be unable to get them in or out on that side of the car. I've never had this happen on any of the Toyotas I've owned.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-09-22
- VIN: 5NPEC4ACXEH

I hope the dealership and Hyundai rot. !
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-12
- VIN: KMHEC4A47EA
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I was driving at approx 30mph and all of a sudden I get a warning on my dashboard that says "Hybrid System Warning - Check brakes- safely stop and do not drive". My car slowed down and the brakes went to the floor. I was able to coast it to the side and turn off my car. I waited a few minutes, turned it back on and it was fine. The same thing happened 3 months ago. I took it to the dealer the first time it happened and they replaced the 12v battery and cleared all the codes. They couldn't find out exactly what was wrong. Suggestion was if it continues, then replace the hydraulic module for over $5k. It did happen again, but didn't take it to the dealer, but to a local mechanic. They checked the brakes and are fine. The codes were the same and said it might be the Hydraulic Booster High Pressure Accumulator (HPA). I was reading the Hyundai forum and this seems to happen to many Hyundai hybrids. I'm concerned for my safety and the safety of others if I was driving on the freeway and the same thing happens. There's no advance warning. I could cause an accident because of it. Seems that Hyundai needs to issue a recall on the hydraulic module and replace it.

Had to wait HOURS for a tow, triple A couldn’t help, had to pay $70 out of pocket. Now they are denying me for an engine replacement, each time I submit the documentation they request, they find some reason to turn it down, and when I ask what they specifically needed me to do, they just gave me a phone number to call for Hyundai customer affairs, even though I have already gone through all of this with them, and they directed me back to the dealership as far as communication goes. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-10
- VIN: 5NPEC4AC2EH
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The brake lights fail with no warning. Bulb replacement used to work. Since ownership at +70,000 miles, I have had to replace one or both of the tail light sections as they melted. The lighting harness has been changed multiple times. In January 2024 Hyundai issued a warranty extension to 15years/200,000miles. There is no date on the letter. When I tried to get my car serviced there were charges for testing to ensure that this was the problem and it was difficult to find someone to service the car in a timely manner. The police continue to issue me tickets for no rear brake lights. The Dealer who finally serviced the car indicated that the Warranty was Void as the replacement parts were not Hyundai parts. Servicing the car was well after the original warranty was already over, so why would you worry about warranty claims for original parts. They claim that they cannot diagnosis the problem without original parts. Hyundai Corporate Customer Service was no help in this matter, but they did apologize for the problem. Can't drive a car without tail lights and paying 850 for the repair is one month of my disability check.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-07
- VIN: KMHEC4A45EA
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Received recall notice on 4-16-24 and immediately called for an appt to repair ABS problem. After waiting for over an hour, I was told that, yes indeed, my car needed repair but could not be done at that time as this was only an inspection to determine that a repair was needed and someone would call when the part is available but they don't know when. I feel like I was given a run around.

The car is great, although the front seat could benefit from a bit more cushioning.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2014 Hyundai Sonata 2.0T Limited. I've put 145K miles on it and overall, it's been a reliable car. I did have to have the engine replaced at 120K miles, but the good news is that Hyundai covered the cost due to a class action lawsuit. If you're considering buying a used Sonata, I recommend Googling this issue to learn more. The engine replacement is available to all owners, regardless of mileage or time. Hyundai even provided me with a free loaner car during the 2-week repair. The only downside I've experienced is that the FM radio reception can be weak at times, which is odd since I live in a major metropolitan area. However, the car has many great features, such as a quiet cabin at high speeds, comfortable ride, good acceleration, Bluetooth capability, and a shiftable automatic. The backup camera screen is a bit small at 4.3 inches, and there's no sport mode, but overall, I'm very happy with my Sonata.

Runs well!

The car has only 46,xxx miles on it and the engine is running fine. However, the roof makes a horrible creaking noise when going over speed bumps and even worse on gravel roads. In hindsight, a Civic EX-L would have been a better choice. Despite everything else being well, the car doesn't feel like it did less than 9 months ago.

If you're looking for a car that you can rely on to start every time, you may want to consider other options besides the Hyundai Sonata. Unfortunately, our experience with our brand new 2014 Sonata has been less than satisfactory. We've had multiple instances where the car wouldn't start, leaving us stranded far from home. Despite seeking assistance from Hyundai, we haven't received any help. We've had to take the car in for repairs multiple times due to engine and push button start problems. While we're disappointed with our experience, we understand that every car has its own unique issues. We'll be exploring other options in the future, but we appreciate the time we had with our Sonata.

The gas mileage may not meet the advertised standards and the transmission may shift into higher gears at unexpected times. Despite bringing the issue to the dealer's attention, I was informed that the vehicle is running as designed. While I expressed my concerns to Hyundai, it did not yield any results. It is important to be aware of the advertised fuel mileage, as it may not reflect the actual performance of the vehicle.

Reliable and less expensive than Toyota or Nissan!

The brakes failed three times within four seconds while attempting to stop the car from 25mph on a slightly wet road after a minor drizzle.
