2024 Gmc Sierra 2500 problems
The Chevrolet Silverado is a range of trucks manufactured by General Motors under the Chevrolet brand. Introduced for the 1999 model year, the Silverado is the successor to the long-running Chevrolet C/K model line. Taking its name from the top trim level from the Chevrolet C/K series, the Silverado is offered as a series of full-size pickup trucks, chassis cab trucks, and medium-duty trucks. The fourth generation of the model line was introduced for the 2019 model year.
The Chevrolet Silverado shares mechanical commonality with the identically related GMC Sierra; GMC ended the use of the C/K nomenclature a model generation prior to Chevrolet. In Mexico, high-trim level versions of the Silverado use the Chevrolet Cheyenne name (not to be confused with the 2003 concept). Competing against the Ford F-Series, Ram Pickup, Toyota Tundra, and Nissan Titan, the Silverado is among the best-selling vehicles in the United States, having sold over 12 million trucks since its introduction in 1998 as a 1999 model year.
History
The Silverado nameplate made its debut for the 1975 model year, becoming the top trim level on all Chevrolet C/K trucks, slotted above Custom Deluxe, Scottsdale, and Cheyenne. For the 1968 model year (seven years before the Silverado), GMC C/K trucks used variations of the Sierra name (Sierra, Sierra Classic, Sierra Grande, and High Sierra). Even after the C/K series officially ended, GM still uses the CK and the CC in their current model codes, to denote a two-wheel drive (CC), and four-wheel drive (CK).
For the 1988 GMT400 model architecture, Chevrolet retained the C/K model nomenclature, with GMC branding its full-size line as Sierras. While sharing the same body and chassis, the model chronology of the Silverado and Sierra are different, with five generations of the Sierra, while four of the Silverado.
In 2018, at the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, Indiana, Chevrolet unveiled the first medium-duty Silverado, expanding the model line to a 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD chassis cab. Largely the successor to the 2003–2009 GMT560 chassis, the medium-duty trucks are exclusive to Chevrolet, with no plans for an equivalent GMC version. Instead, Navistar International (now partnering with GM) would sell the medium-duty trucks as a rebadged counterpart, called the CV. This is in fact a very similar nod to how the Avalanche did not have a GMC Yukon–based equivalent, but instead, Cadillac would take its place as the former's rebadged counterpart, the Escalade EXT.

POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-23
- VIN: 1GT49PEY8RF
- Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: First date was 04/23/2024 my truck went into limp mode with an alert reading engine and transmission control module problem. Brought it in and they reset the sensors. Shortly after the alert warning goes off again and I turn the engine off and start it back up. It cleared the alert, I brought it back in on 06/15/2024. They reset sensor and fixed a recall on tailgate. I picked up truck, drove it for 2 months and TCM warning came up and threw truck into limp mode while pulling a 2 horse trailer. It turned a 3 hr drive into a 6 hr drive. I brought back to dealer on 8/19/2024 they had it for 4 days and they notified me that this is an on going problem. It is a transmission solenoid valve stuck open and they ordered the part and told me it could be months before the part gets here due to the ongoing backorder from all the other trucks that have the same problem. I use this truck for work and leisure to pull my boat and 2 horse trailer and now I have a vehicle payment to make and no vehicle to use. I cannot use it to work or anything else because it is at the dealer for an unspecified amount of time. I have read online that this is a major problem with this truck and GMC as well as the dealerships know about this problem and they still sold it to me. There are so many complaints online about this GMC 2500 AT4 truck problem that GMC should stop selling this truck.

The incident happened again once I was back in ohio when I had my trailor hooked up and it cause the tailgate to collide with the trailor tongue and dented the whole top of the tailgate.3
POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-06
- VIN: 1GT49PE70RF
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I purchased a 2024 GMC 2500 HD truck to pull a 2021 8,000 lb gvw camping trailer that is equipped with electric trailer brakes. My trailer has functioned perfectly related to the trailer brakes with my previous vehicle (2011 Toyota Tundra). With the GMC 2500, at approximately 3000 miles on the vehicle, a “trailer brake disconnected or disabled” and “check trailer wiring” warning began popping up on my information center of the truck. The trailer braking system would not function, though all other functions of the lighting and camera systems to the trailer worked indicating that the wiring and grounding were not an issue with the trailer. The brake system would intermittently return to normal. And then this warning and disconnected condition (i.e. no functioning trailer brakes) would return. This occurred rapidly, and very frequently. GMC has acknowledged a problem with some vehicles with this problem by publishing a TSB that purports to correct this issue (23-NA-149) that recommends replacement of the trailer brake control module (part no. 212327200000019B). I had this repair performed while on a trip in South Dakota away from my home state in Arkansas and the truck and trailer functioned as normal for approximately 3000 miles of towing. However, the issue has returned and my local GMC dealer repair shop (Little Rock, AR) places the blame on the trailer and not the truck. Towing with this 2024 GMC 2500 HD is very unsafe to the occupants and any others on the road due to loss of braking while towing a heavy load or navigating steep grades with a trailer equipped as described. This problem is now all over GMC/Chevy truck forums and is not just me or my combination. This issue is gonna get people killed.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-04
- VIN: 1GT49PEY7RF
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: The contact owns a 2024 GMC Sierra 2500. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle briefly hesitated before returning to normal functionality. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the transfer case seals. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure reoccurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, who again diagnosed a failure with the transfer case seals. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 6,000.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-26
- VIN: 1GT49REY5RF
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Brake control module disconnects trailer brakes while towing. Apparently a known issue with trailers equipped with solar battery chargers which have higher charge than vehicle battery. It feeds back into the trailer brake power module causing it to shut down. The vehicle has an integrated trailer brake controller as it is specifically designed with primary function as a tow vehicle. Shutting down the integrated trailer brake controller results in loss of trailer brakes. Not having trailer brakes is critically dangerous. GM has issued a TSB #23-NA-149 specifically addressing this known defect. Unfortunately, GM refuses to authorize its service technicians to replace the defective brake controller unless they experience the defect personally - the policy is to disbelieve the customer with the defective vehicle. Effectively, this requires providing the trailer to the service tech to drive around until the brakes fail, thus creating another dangerous situation for a tech who may or may not have experience driving vehicles over 50’ in length. Thus, it would appear the best remedy is to enforce a recall to replace the defective brake controller before someone is harm by loss of brakes, since GM requires its techs to encounter a loss of brakes before authorization of replacement of the known defective unit. This happened over 25 times during a trip last week. This fact situation reveals why your Administration actually exists - to protect the public from harm.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-20
- VIN: 1GT49PEY2RF
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The tailgate was automatically dropped while trailer was connected. Destroyed my tailgate. This should never happen.
LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-16
- VIN: 1GT49REY6RF
- Components: LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES
- Summary: The contact owns a 2024 GMC Sierra 2500. The contact stated while driving approximately 45–50 MPH in the rain, the tail gate opened unintendedly. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact stated that cargo in the bed of the truck fell out onto the roadway. The contact stated that the failure was like NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V060000 (Latches/Locks/Linkages) however, the VIN was not included. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 2,900.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-06
- VIN: 1GT49NE73RF
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: The contact owns a 2024 GMC Sierra 2500. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the sun struck the solar panel used to charge the battery, and the surge from the battery entered the pigtail going through the truck, and disconnected the brake module, causing it to become disengaged from the vehicle. The contact took the vehicle to the camper and vehicle dealer who both stated there was no issue for concern. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer of the camper and the vehicle were made aware of the issue. The vehicle failure mileage was 8,000.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-07
- VIN: 1GT49XEY4RF
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: water intrusion resulted in the tailgate inadvertently unlatching while the vehicle is in park multiple times while being washed. This apparently happened throughout the night, assuming voltage was being used to send open signal, which resulted in drained battery. In my case my vin is not on the recall that is out on GMC for tailgate issue. And dealership determined there is a pinch in tailgate speaker harness that is causing the issue. Which I’m sure that harness is tied into tailgate latch harness. What needs to be addressed in this recall is for the two drain holes on top of tailgate to be somehow sealed. Drain holes are directly above tailgate latch and harnesses which is the main concern in this problem.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-05-04
- VIN: 1GT49RE73RF
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The contact owns a 2024 GMC Sierra 2500. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the trailer brakes deactivated independently. The contact stated that the failure occurred while the contact was towing a trailer. The contact stated that the failure was persistent. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The vehicle was not diagnosed; however, the trailer brake control module was replaced. The failure reoccurred. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 1,001.
EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-07
- VIN: 1GT49ZE70RF
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: When snowing the headlights freeze over. Have to stop on the side. Of the road and clean them off. They do not get hot enough to melt snow to be able to drive safe at night.
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-25
- VIN: 1GT49RE73RF
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: The contact owns a 2024 GMC Sierra 2500. The contact stated while stopped at an intersection, the vehicle moved forward while the brake pedal was fully depressed. The contact also stated on a level surface, the vehicle accelerated about 4 MPH without the accelerator pedal being depressed. The failure occurred on several occasions. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the failure was duplicated; however, the dealer stated that the vehicle operated as designed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 100.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-15
- VIN: 1GT58LE7XRF
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: GMC has a problem with the electronic brake controller on their 2024 Sierra 2500HD and 3500Hd trucks. All trailers are required to have trailer brakes. In addition the trailer must be equipped with an auxillary battery to activate the emergency breakaway brakes. If the voltage on this battery is higher than the towing vehicle battery, the vehicle controller can display a trailer wiring fault display. When this happens there are no brakes on the trailer. This fault happens intermittantly and can last between 10 seconds to 30 seconds. We constantly have this problem with our vehicle. On two occasions we were in an emergency situation towing a12,500 lb load and had no brakes. This is A SEVERE SAFETY CONCERN. The GMC dealer stated that the problem is because our trailer uses a regular car battery to work the hydraulics and the brakes. They stated that the controller pings the trailer to see is anything is connected and that the car battery can interfear with this signal. When this signal does not return the controller senses that no trailer is connected and disables the trailer brakes. The trailer that we have is new and it is wired according to industry standards. Thre are thousands of trailers on the road that have this configuratiion. We have inspected the trailer and cannot find wiring problems. We have towed the same tyrailer with two different trucks and do not have this problem. A quick search on the internet will reveal that many other people are experiencing the same problem.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE,BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-12
- VIN: 1GT49PEY7RF
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE,BACK OVER PREVENTION
- Summary: While driving both drivers and passenger side blind spot warning lights flash on and off when no cars are near. The problem is worse at night when pulling a trailer. The lights sometimes stay on or starting flashing on both side causing a significant distraction.
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-03
- VIN: 1GT49PE76RF
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: Tailgate opening on its own when vehicle is in park. Has done this when engine is running in park and with engine shut off in park.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-21
- VIN: 1GT49XEY6RF
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: [XXX] has a trailer brake control module issue that causes the trailer brake to periodically disengage and reengage. Unfortunately, I had to drive across the country on a military PCS move with this intermittent failure. GMC has provided numerous surveys to ask about my experience with my new GMC. Overall, the vehicle adequate, and in each survey I have annotated this issue. However, it does not appear the issue is being taken seriously as I have not seen a recall. A trailer brake that intermittently fails is extremely dangerous. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-13
- VIN: 1GT49PEY7RF
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The contact owns a 2024 GMC Sierra 2500. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, another vehicle drove by on the driver's side of the vehicle, and the blind spot alert light illuminated on the passenger's side of the vehicle, even though the vehicle was present on the driver's side. The contact also stated that the failure only occurred when the Adaptive Cruise Control was activated. The vehicle returned to normal functionality, but the failure became a regular occurrence. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who was able to duplicate the failure but was unable to provide a fix. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but did not assist. The failure mileage was 3.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-12
- VIN: 1GT49REY2RF
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Towing an RV with solar panels. When the trailer battery becomes fully charged and has a higher charge than the vehicle battery, the trailer brake control module becomes disabled. When this occurs, you have no trailer brakes. Combined weight of truck and RV exceeds 20,000 pounds. Trying to stop with only truck brakes is dangerous, especially if you are on a decent. I not only believe this to be a safety issues, but somebody is going to get killed.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-15
- VIN: 1GT49REY1RF
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: The contact owns a 2024 GMC Sierra 2500. The contact stated while towing a trailer and driving down a hill at approximately 40 MPH, the integrated trailer braking system error message was displayed, and the trailer braking system failed to activate. The vehicle was later taken to the local dealer who was unable to replicate the failure and failure was found. The dealer later informed the contact that the solar panel system on the trailer might have caused the integrated trailer braking system to malfunction. The contact stated that after turning off the solar panel system the failure persisted. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 800.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-15
- VIN: 1GT58LE73RF
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: When I connect my 2024 GMC Sierra 2500HD to my camping trailer that has a solar panel and solar charge controller, it causes the factory-installed brake controller inside the truck to malfunction. The trailer brakes connect and disconnect 4 times a minute sending alerts to my dashboard. This is dangerous. My trailer weighs up to 14,000 pounds and would have to rely solely on the truck brakes to slow to a stop. GM put out a Document ID: 6379278 / #23-NA-113 "Information on Trailer Brake Disabled or DTC Stored". However, there is no fix. The GMC dealer said they can't find the service bulletin?! Please make this issue a RECALL. I bought this truck to exclusively tow a trailer and now I can't.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-25
- VIN: 1GT49PE75RF
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Upon starting our 2024 GMC Sierra 2500HD after towing a camping trailer for approximately 200 miles, the following error notifications would cycle every 20 seconds to 5 minutes: "Check Trailer Wiring" "Service Trailer Brake System" The trailer brake would become disabled after these errors, and sometimes would connect with a "trailer brake connected" message, only to repeat every 20 seconds to a few minutes later. During the 60 minutes in which I drove to an RV dealership to have the problem looked at, on multiple occasions, I had no trailer brakes when braking, or had no trailer brakes until the trailer brakes suddenly connected at below the speed of 35 - 25 MPH. GM has acknowledged document ID: 6420021 and bulletin #23-NA-149 that this could happen when pulling a trailer with a battery, generator, or solar charger that has a higher state of charge than the vehicle battery. This is an extremely unsafe condition that could easily cause a rear-end accident or a jackknife condition of the vehicle/trailer combination. GM has known about this issue since at least June of 2023, and as of September, they have an updated trailer brake controller that is supposed to correct this issue. There should be an immediate recall of the vehicles involved to have the trailer brake module replaced with the updated part.
