The Chevrolet Silverado is a range of trucks manufactured by General Motors under the Chevrolet brand. Introduced for the 1999 model year, the Silverado is the successor to the long-running Chevrolet C/K model line. Taking its name from the top trim level from the Chevrolet C/K series, the Silverado is offered as a series of full-size pickup trucks, chassis cab trucks, and medium-duty trucks. The fourth generation of the model line was introduced for the 2019 model year.

The Chevrolet Silverado shares mechanical commonality with the identically related GMC Sierra; GMC ended the use of the C/K nomenclature a model generation prior to Chevrolet. In Mexico, high-trim level versions of the Silverado use the Chevrolet Cheyenne name (not to be confused with the 2003 concept). Competing against the Ford F-Series, Ram Pickup, Toyota Tundra, and Nissan Titan, the Silverado is among the best-selling vehicles in the United States, having sold over 12 million trucks since its introduction in 1998 as a 1999 model year.

History

The Silverado nameplate made its debut for the 1975 model year, becoming the top trim level on all Chevrolet C/K trucks, slotted above Custom Deluxe, Scottsdale, and Cheyenne. For the 1968 model year (seven years before the Silverado), GMC C/K trucks used variations of the Sierra name (Sierra, Sierra Classic, Sierra Grande, and High Sierra). Even after the C/K series officially ended, GM still uses the CK and the CC in their current model codes, to denote a two-wheel drive (CC), and four-wheel drive (CK).

For the 1988 GMT400 model architecture, Chevrolet retained the C/K model nomenclature, with GMC branding its full-size line as Sierras. While sharing the same body and chassis, the model chronology of the Silverado and Sierra are different, with five generations of the Sierra, while four of the Silverado.

In 2018, at the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, Indiana, Chevrolet unveiled the first medium-duty Silverado, expanding the model line to a 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD chassis cab. Largely the successor to the 2003–2009 GMT560 chassis, the medium-duty trucks are exclusive to Chevrolet, with no plans for an equivalent GMC version. Instead, Navistar International (now partnering with GM) would sell the medium-duty trucks as a rebadged counterpart, called the CV. This is in fact a very similar nod to how the Avalanche did not have a GMC Yukon–based equivalent, but instead, Cadillac would take its place as the former's rebadged counterpart, the Escalade EXT.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with this truck. While I initially thought it would be a great choice for the long haul, I've unfortunately run into some issues recently. Over the past year, I've had to replace the radiator, A/C condenser, heater core, and even the transmission. As a result, my reliability score has taken a bit of a hit. That being said, it's still a nice drive overall - just some problems with integrity. Thanks for listening!

  2. Fernando Pollich 2024-05-10

Hi there! I'm the original owner of this truck and it's actually the first one I've ever owned. It currently has 155,XXX miles on it and I'm happy to say that it still runs great! If I had to nitpick, my biggest complaint would probably be the brakes. They seem a bit soft and don't grab like other vehicles I've owned. However, repairs have been pretty nominal. I've had to replace the anti-lock brake system, intake manifold, 2 fuel pumps, alternator, front brake pads and rotors, but overall it's been a good vehicle and one that I would definitely purchase again.

The Air fan Switch control requires improvement. The LED indicating light for air recirculation and A/C went out prematurely, and the starter failed too soon.

I absolutely adore my '95 GMC Sierra 1500 Z71, even though she's currently out of commission. With 195,xxx miles on her, the engine, transmission, and everything else are still in great condition. Unfortunately, the transfer case gave out while I was pulling a Dodge out of the sand (but I did manage to get it out!). I'm taking this setback as an opportunity to fix her up. I just ordered some fantastic upgrades, including Halo projector headlights/LED turn signals, a new grille assembly, and a performance chip. I'm also planning to order smoked LED tail lights and 3rd brake light, new tires, seat covers, door panels, chrome handles all around, 5in fender flares, 3-5 in body lift, and more. I'm so excited for all the improvements to come!

If you ever come across a 95 GMC 1500 6.5TD, make sure to include it in your family photos. It's a vehicle you'll never forget. From the GM-8 Borg Warner turbo to the 4.11 limited slip rear w/ locking front differential, this is the perfect vehicle to drive over the Porsche or Camaro if you're running late. I've had mine for 5 years now, and while it has some rust, it still outperforms the PowerStroke 6.0/6.4/7.3 or whatever else they haven't kept up with well over a decade later. Do you live in an area with protests? No worries, just slap a grill on the front and once they hear the deafening lifters dancing to the 24:1 compression, people will run.

Firstly, it's important to note that this is a 20-year-old truck, so it may not have all the bells and whistles of modern vehicles. However, this truck is incredibly sturdy and reliable. This is actually my second K1500, and my first one lasted for an impressive 300k miles! The Vortec engines are very well made, and with regular maintenance, they can last as long as you own your truck. Towing with this truck has been a breeze. I have the 305ci 5.0L with the 5-speed manual transmission, and I love having control over the shifting. If you ever need to make repairs, the maintenance is very straightforward. The engine bay is spacious, making it easy to swap out parts like the alternator, water pump, and spark plugs. The only issue I've had is with the AC compressor, which developed a leak after 20 years - not bad at all! One of the best things about this truck is the price. You can find them in excellent condition for around $5000, and they'll last you for years. In my opinion, this is the best variety of pickups that GM has ever put out.

  5. Candido Zulauf 2025-03-01

95 Sierra Z-71 Extended cab. Owned it since day 1. Now has 263,000 miles on her. Has been in the shop 4 times in 14 years. No real major issues. If you take care of her, she will take care of you. I love this truck. Thought about trading her during cash for clunkers and test drove the F-150, Chevy Silverado and the Ram. They still didn't compare to her. My old gal still rode better and had the same or more power. Furthermore, the cost of a new truck is insane. I can buy half a house for the cost of a new truck. The Tundra was nice but 42k about killed me. They don't make them as solid as this one anymore. If you want a good dependable work horse, this is it. I think I'd cry if I sold her:(
