The Chevrolet Express (also known as the GMC Savana) is a series of full-size vans produced by General Motors since 1996. The successor to the Chevrolet G-series van, the Express is produced in passenger and cargo variants. Alongside the standard van body, the line is offered as a cutaway van chassis; the latter vehicle is a chassis cab variant developed for commercial-grade applications, including ambulances, buses, motorhomes, and small trucks.

In production for a single generation since 1995, over 2.5 million examples of the Express and the Savana have been produced. One of the longest-produced designs in American automotive history, the Express/Savana are rivaled only by the Jeep Wagoneer and Dodge Ram Van for longevity.

Since 1995, General Motors has assembled the Express and Savana at its Wentzville Assembly facility (Wentzville, Missouri). Also, since 2017, GM has sourced commercial cutaway-chassis production from Navistar through its Springfield Assembly Plant (Springfield, Ohio).

Common 1996 Gmc Savana problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the GMC Savana 1996, several common problems have been reported. Here is a detailed list of these issues:

  1. Windshield Wiper Motor Component Failure:
    • Owners of the GMC Savana 1996 have experienced intermittent issues with the windshield wipers due to a defective wiper motor. This problem can lead to the wipers stopping intermittently, failing to turn on, or running continuously after being turned off. A buzzing sound from the motor control box is an indicator of this issue. A temporary fix involves lightly tapping the control box to get the wipers working again, but a permanent solution requires replacing the wiper motor control board.
  2. Coolant Leaks or Oil Leaks From Intake Manifold Gaskets:
    • Another common problem reported by GMC Savana 1996 owners is coolant or oil leaks from the intake manifold gaskets. These leaks can lead to engine overheating, loss of coolant or oil, and potential engine damage. Addressing this issue promptly is crucial to prevent further complications and maintain the engine's performance.
  3. Broken Door Handles:
    • The door handles on the GMC Savana 1996 are prone to breaking, affecting both indoor and outdoor handles. This issue typically arises after around 140,000 miles of use. Symptoms include difficulty in opening or unlocking the door, or physical breakage of the handle itself. Unfortunately, repairing these broken handles is often not feasible, necessitating their replacement.
  4. Idling Problems:
    • Some GMC Savana 1996 owners have reported idling problems, including a higher-than-normal engine idle. This issue can result in fuel wastage and even engine shutdown during idling. The likely cause of this problem is a vacuum leak in the throttle body gasket. Replacing any faulty gaskets is essential to resolve this issue, which tends to occur around 160,000 miles.
  5. Abnormal Noise From the Front or Rear Differential:
    • At approximately 165,000 miles, owners of the GMC Savana 1996 may start hearing abnormal noises from the front or rear differential. These noises can manifest as clunking, banging, or grinding sounds, accompanied by vibrations under the driver's seat. Worn bearings are often the culprit, necessitating the replacement of axle bearings or a full rebuild of the affected differential.
  6. Alternator Failure:
    • Another common issue reported by owners of the GMC Savana 1996 is alternator failure. This can lead to battery drainage, abnormal noises, and potential dash warning lights. Replacing the alternator, which typically costs around $300 to $400, is necessary to address this problem, which tends to occur around 125,000 miles.
  7. Internal Distributor Faults:
    • While less common, some drivers have experienced internal faults in the distributor of the GMC Savana 1996. Symptoms may include squealing noises, rough engine running, or stalling. Overhauling or replacing the internal distributor is required to rectify this issue.

These common problems with the GMC Savana 1996 highlight the importance of regular maintenance and prompt attention to any emerging issues to ensure the vehicle's optimal performance and longevity.

It's great to hear that you and your family have had such a positive experience with your van! While there have been some minor issues with the brakes and driver's side window, it's clear that your family has made many happy memories in the van. In fact, your family loves the van so much that you just purchased a new one! Here's to another 10+ years of happy travels!

  2. Oscar Zulauf 2024-08-15

An excellent conversion van-- Trailmaster conversion. After 10 years and 160,000 miles it is still reliable and comfortable. This van has spoiled me for driving distances in anything else.

  3. Kellen Harber 2024-04-10

Your car sounds like a great investment! It's amazing that you've had it for so long and it still runs like new with over 100K miles on it. It's perfect for hauling people and things, and it's great that you can even fit a 4x8 sheet of plywood in the back. The only minor issues you've had with it are the fuel pump and air conditioning hoses, but those were easily fixed. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!
