The Chevrolet Express (also known as the GMC Savana) is a series of full-size vans produced by General Motors since 1996. The successor to the Chevrolet G-series van, the Express is produced in passenger and cargo variants. Alongside the standard van body, the line is offered as a cutaway van chassis; the latter vehicle is a chassis cab variant developed for commercial-grade applications, including ambulances, buses, motorhomes, and small trucks.

In production for a single generation since 1995, over 2.5 million examples of the Express and the Savana have been produced. One of the longest-produced designs in American automotive history, the Express/Savana are rivaled only by the Jeep Wagoneer and Dodge Ram Van for longevity.

Since 1995, General Motors has assembled the Express and Savana at its Wentzville Assembly facility (Wentzville, Missouri). Also, since 2017, GM has sourced commercial cutaway-chassis production from Navistar through its Springfield Assembly Plant (Springfield, Ohio).

Common Gmc Savana problems

The GMC Savana 2500, a hard-working van that has been giving its competitors a run for their money, has been subject to a few engine problems. One common issue is the transmission getting stuck in the third gear, which is a problem with the 4L60E and 4L65E types of transmission. This issue may be caused by a malfunction with the instrument cluster, with DTC set at P0753, P0740, P1860, and P0785. The most likely culprit is an open circuit between the transmission and fuse panel or a blown fuse. If the fuse has no battery voltage, the ignition switch may need to be replaced.

Another common problem with the 4L60E Transmission RPO M30 is an abnormally harsh 1-2 shift, which may indicate excessive bore wear that holds the regulator valves and TCC isolator. This results in extreme line pressure, and the only solution is the replacement of the 4L60E valve body with isolator valves and a revised TCC regulator.

When there is no movement when shifting to the third gear or Drive position, it indicates that the GMC Savana 2500 has problems. This issue can be resolved by replacing the forward sprag assembly. Additionally, there is a common problem with the 4L60E Transmission and 4L65E Transmission, where the first and third gears seem to function correctly, but there are problems with the 2nd, 3rd, and reverse gears. The solution is to replace the heat-treated 4L60E/4L65 sun gear, which is a failure of the reaction sun gear.

The most common problem reported by GMC Savana owners is a delayed starting problem, which is a problem with the 2000 GMC Savana. The average cost to fix this problem is $3,500, and it occurs at an average mileage of 44,000 mi.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Office of Defects Investigation is looking into a complaint that alleges an issue with the 6L90 transmission used by 2016-2018 and 2021-2022 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana cutaway models in the U.S. A complaint filed with the NHTSA claims that impacted vehicles could experience a loss of power when shifting into drive or reverse. The complaint notes that many of the Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana models impacted are used as school buses and ambulances and says that a loss of motive power could prevent ambulances from transporting patients and could force students to leave a school bus mid-route.

In conclusion, the GMC Savana 2500 has been subject to a few engine problems, including transmission issues, delayed starting problems, and leaking coolant from a cracked intake manifold gasket. It is important for GMC Savana owners to be aware of these issues and to seek professional help when needed.

  • VIN: 1GJHG39U151
  • Components: VISIBILITY
  • Summary: I had a new front windshield sold by PGW installed by Coughlin Auto Glass in Deer Lodge Montana in November - December 2022. I immediately noticed that the windshield did not allow RED LIGHT to pass through the tinted area. This is most likely due to a manufacturing defect and is dangerous. Unfortunately I did not have time to argue with the installer about a replacement until now, as I have been out of the state until yesterday. The installer confirmed that the glass was defective. He states that he contacted PGW today and that they will not replace the window. He and Pittsburg Glass Works state that they have had no other complaints and that it is too late to do anything about it. I suspect there is an entire batch of glass windshields that have this manufacturing defect. The consumer representative for PGW admitted that they had problems with supplies and manufacturing during COVID. I suspect this happened due to COVID related manufacturing problems.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my Exployer conversion. While the interior looks great, I did notice that the ride quality is only fair. Additionally, at highway speeds, there is quite a bit of wind noise which can make it difficult to hold a conversation.

Although I have always been a GM guy, this particular van has been a disappointment. The windshield cracked on the first day off the lot due to small stones, which is indicative of poor quality glass. Additionally, the AC failed within 6 months. The fuel efficiency is also subpar, with only 10mpg in the city or on the highway, and only 12mpg on the highway on one occasion. When towing my trailer, I was only able to achieve 6mpg. Overall, I would not consider purchasing this van again.

Great vehicle for past 4 years! The AWD has worked flawlessly and is just as good as my previous 4WD vehicle with a transfer case, but much more convenient. However, I have experienced two issues. Firstly, the AC will not hold a charge for more than one season. Secondly, the side swinging door hits the front passenger door when both are open, which dents the rear door on the edge of the front door. This is a really poor design (where were the engineers???).

I hope you're doing well! I noticed that you mentioned using your van to pull your fishing boat to the ocean. That sounds like a lot of fun! I was thinking that it might be helpful to have side mirrors that extend out for better visibility when backing up in tight spaces. I've seen some really nice ones on Ford pickups that might work well for your van. Some of them even retract and fold against the truck when not in use. I know you love your van, and it sounds like you have a great system for storing all your fishing gear in holders. Just lock up the van and you're ready for your next trip!

Great for hauling kids and camping! It's also easy to haul 4x8 sheets of ply. The rear bench has plenty of room for all my stuff, even when pulling a camper trailer. However, over time, there have been some odd brake issues and all the brake lines have become rusty, resulting in a huge expense. Additionally, I've had a few electrical issues and corroded grounds that are hard to trace.

We have really enjoyed driving this vehicle for the last 14000 miles. It was a conversion by Cobra, nothing too fancy, but it has the best seats available. We didn't opt for a TV or mood lights, but that hasn't detracted from our experience. The fuel economy has ranged from 12.5 mpg in sub-zero city driving to 20.2 mpg on 55 mph rural roads, which we're really happy with. The only issue we've had so far is with the windshield weather stripping, which came loose while on the interstate. Thankfully, the dealer was able to make the repair, eventually. Unfortunately, GM treats the option list like all Savanna's will be plumbing trucks, so we didn't get an MP3 cd player, XM satellite controller, or trip computer. However, all of these items are available on the Yukon/Suburban, which this van is based on. It has a 5.3 V8 engine and was the same price as the Toyota Sienna, but the extra space was the deciding factor for us.

In November 2021, I purchased a 1998 GMC 2500 Savana with the 5.7 motor. The seller mentioned that a company had taken care of it and that the motor had been rebuilt with only 90,000 miles on it. Although I wasn't given any information about what was done to the motor, it runs great and has power. The van was previously used as a cargo van/food truck and has no major dents, but the sliding side door handle and lock were missing and the back driver's side door needs to be lifted up a touch to latch properly. Despite these minor issues, it starts up every time and goes down the highway great. The gas gauge works and there is no 'Service Engine Soon' light. I did notice a slight play in the steering when going down the highway, but it stays straight and doesn't pull from side to side. Currently, the biggest issue is a ticking sound every revolution of the engine, which is hard to locate. However, I've driven the van around 1,300 miles with the ticking sound and it hasn't gotten better or worse. I've been trying to find the culprit and have checked the flywheel for cracks, the tightness of the flywheel bolts, and even removed the left valve cover to inspect the rockers. I made a YouTube video to show the process: see this: https://youtu.be/GUGiHv2Fk3U. The rockers on the left side looked really clean and there was no gunk around the cover and on the bottom.First, I will adjust my rocker bolts and then change the oil again to check for metal shavings. While the oil pan is off, I will use a small ball peen and tap the bottom of each rod to listen for any unusual sounds. This will help me identify any problems with the bearings. In the worst-case scenario, I may have to pull the engine and check everything or replace it altogether. However, sometimes it's best to leave things as they are if they're not causing any issues. I have read about some owners who have a tick/knock and continue to drive their vehicle without any problems. If you have a 1998 GMC with a ticking noise, please let me know your situation. All in all, I love the way the van drives and it's worth it to me to repair it. The body and suspension seem to still be in great shape, as well as the brakes. I hope my review has been helpful. Take care!

Very good in snow and provides smooth acceleration. The 4 speed auto is a little whiny. If you drive up a lot of hills, get the 6.0 v8 because it is a tad stronger off the line. My family loves this van. I'm planning my vacation in Catskills and all wheel drive will be helpful

I bought this van used from the previous owner who had a Cadillac Escalade. When I bought it, it had only 90,000 original miles and some aftermarket parts. It has no rust, no engine or transmission issues, and rides great!
