The Chevrolet S-10 is a compact pickup truck produced by Chevrolet. It was the first domestically-built compact pickup of the big three American automakers. When it was first introduced as a "quarter-ton pickup" in 1981 for the 1982 model year, the GMC version was known as the S-15 and later renamed the GMC Sonoma. A high-performance version of the latter was released in 1991, called "Syclone." The pickup was also sold by Isuzu as the Hombre from 1996 through 2000, but only in North America. There was also an SUV version, the Chevrolet S-10 Blazer/GMC S-15 Jimmy. An electric version was leased as a fleet vehicle in 1997 and 1998. These models are sometimes internally referred to as the S/T series to denote two and four wheel drive models respectively (similar to the full size Chevrolet C/K trucks) despite all versions being badged with 'S' nomenclature.

In North America, the S-series was replaced by the Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, and Isuzu i-Series in 2004.

The S-Series ended production in Brazil in 2012, being replaced by the Chevrolet Colorado, but still with the name S-10.

Common Gmc S15 problems

The GMC S15, also known as the Jimmy, is a compact pickup truck that has been praised for its durability and versatility. However, like any vehicle, it is not without its issues. Here are some of the most common problems with the GMC S15, based on complaints from owners:

  1. Power Window Motors May Fail From Overheating: The power window motors in the GMC S15 are prone to overheating, which can cause them to fail. This is a common issue that many owners have reported, and it can be a frustrating problem to deal with, especially if it happens frequently. The best way to prevent this issue is to avoid using the power windows excessively, especially in hot weather.
  2. Distributor Shaft O-Ring Seal May Leak Oil: The distributor shaft O-ring seal in the GMC S15 can leak oil, which can cause a variety of problems. This is a relatively common issue, and it can be caused by a number of factors, including wear and tear on the seal or damage to the seal. If you notice oil leaking from your distributor shaft, it's important to have it inspected and repaired as soon as possible.
  3. Timing Gears Can Cause Knocking Sound: The timing gears in the GMC S15 can cause a knocking sound, which can be a sign of a serious problem. This issue is often caused by wear and tear on the gears or damage to the timing chain. If you notice a knocking sound coming from your engine, it's important to have it inspected and repaired as soon as possible.
  4. Check Engine Light Due to Oxygen Sensor Failure: The oxygen sensor in the GMC S15 can fail, which can cause the check engine light to come on. This is a relatively common issue, and it can be caused by a number of factors, including wear and tear on the sensor or damage to the sensor. If you notice the check engine light coming on, it's important to have it inspected and repaired as soon as possible.
  5. Firing Order Problems: The firing order in the GMC S15 can be a source of confusion for some owners. The firing order for a 1989 GMC S15 with a 4.3 V6 engine is 1-6-5-4-3-2. It's important to replace spark plug wires one at a time to avoid confusion and to ensure that the engine is running properly.
  6. Rip in the Passenger Seat: Some owners of the GMC S15 have reported a rip in the passenger seat near the stitching. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including wear and tear on the seat or damage to the seat. If you notice a rip in your passenger seat, it's important to have it repaired as soon as possible to prevent further damage.
  7. Drivers Side Door Won't Open: Some owners of the GMC S15 have reported that the drivers side door won't open in cold weather. This issue is often caused by the seal coming out, which can prevent the door from opening properly. If you notice that your drivers side door won't open in cold weather, it's important to have it inspected and repaired as soon as possible.
  8. Battery Issue: Some owners of the GMC S15 have reported a battery issue, which can be caused by crossed wires or corrosion. If you notice that your battery is not charging properly or that your vehicle is not starting, it's important to have it inspected and repaired as soon as possible.
  9. Leak: Some owners of the GMC S15 have reported a leak, which can be caused by a variety of factors, including wear and tear on the engine or damage to the engine. If you notice a leak in your vehicle, it's important to have it inspected and repaired as soon as possible.

In conclusion, while the GMC S15 is a reliable and versatile vehicle, it is not without its issues. By being aware of these common problems and taking steps to prevent them, you can help ensure that your vehicle stays in good condition and runs smoothly.

  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 1GKCT18Z8N0
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
  • Summary: ABS SYSTEM ACTIVATES PREMATURLY CAUSING ABS MOTOR ENGAGEMENT. THIS LEADS TO BRAKE PEDAL PULSATIONS AND CONSEQUENTLY COMPLETE PEDAL EXCURSION. THE VEHICLE AT THIS POINT REACTS AS IF IT WILL NOT STOP! THERE ARE NO WARNING INDICATIONS WHEN THE INCIDENT OCCURS NOR ARE THARE ANY HARD OR SOFT CODES SET STORED IN THE COMPUTER. THE VEHICLE RETURNS TO NORMAL STOPPING OPERATION UNTILL THIS BAZAR OCCURANCE HAPPENS AGAIN. IT IS HIGHLY INTERMITTANT AND SEEMS TO FOLLOW A TEMPERATURE RELATIONSHIP. THE LONGER THE VEHICLE IS DRIVEN,THE FREQUENCY OF EVENTS INCREASES.WHEN THIS HAPPENS,IT LEADS ONE TO BELIEVE THAT THE VEHICLE WILL "NOT STOP" BECAUSE STOPPING DISTANCE INCREASES DRAMATICALLY. THIS DOES NOT HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH AN ABS RECALL THAT HAS BEEN PERFORMED EFFECTLY BY MY DEALER. THE PROBLEM EXISTED PRIOR TO THE MANUFACTURERS RECALL AND CONTINUES TO EXIST TODAY. I FEAR THAT THIS WILL HAVE SEVERE CONSEQUENCES AND WILL ULTIMATELY LEAD TO CATASTROPHIC BRAKE FAILURE. ALL BRAKE RELATED HARDWARE AND PERIPHERALS CHECK OUT FINE AS PER MY EXPERT TECHMICIANS. MY CONCLUSION IS THAT THE ABS HYDRALIC CONTROL IS FAULTY IN MY VEHICLE AND MANY OTHERS. PLEASE HELP AS I WOULD NOT WANT TO SEE THIS TURN INTO A FIRESTONE/FORD DISASTER.
