2021 Mazda Mazda3 problems
The Mazda3 (known as the Mazda Axela in Japan (first three generations), a combination of "accelerate" and "excellent") is a compact car manufactured by Mazda. It was first introduced in 2003 as a 2004 model, replacing the Familia/323/Protegé in the C-segment.
The second-generation Mazda3 for the 2009 model year was unveiled in late 2008, with the sedan premiering at the Los Angeles Auto Show and the hatchback at the Bologna Motor Show. For the 2012 model year, Mazda began offering the Mazda3 with their newly developed Skyactiv technology, including a more rigid body, a new direct-injection engine, and a new 6-speed transmission.
The third generation was introduced in mid-2013 as a 2014 model year. The third-generation model is the first Mazda3 to adopt the "Kodo" design language and a more complete Skyactiv range of technologies.
The fourth-generation Mazda3 for the 2019 model year was unveiled in November 2018 at the Los Angeles Auto Show. For the 2019 model, the all-new Mazda3 is equipped with the updated Skyactiv technologies, including a spark-controlled compression ignition engine marketed as the Skyactiv-X.
A performance-oriented version of the Mazda3 was marketed until 2013 as the Mazdaspeed3 in North America, Mazdaspeed Axela in Japan, and the Mazda3 MPS in Europe and Australia.
The Mazda3 became one of Mazda's fastest-selling vehicles, with cumulative sales in January 2019 of over 6 million units.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-20
- VIN: JM1BPBJY6M1
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Low oil light - car is burning oil and only has 11,400 miles. Approx 3/4 to 1 quart missing...
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-06
- VIN: JM1BPAML8M1
- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: At red light, close behind car in front of the mazda. After light turns green, start driving the mazda after car in front moves forward. Although the car in front is moving forward at a higher rate of speed, increasing the distance between it and the mazda, the automatic emergency brake kicks on and stops the vehicle abruptly. Luckily the cars behind the mazda reacted in time and did not rear end it.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-21
- VIN: JM1BPBEYXM1
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: While driving at a normal speed on a clear, sunny day with no other vehicles close by, I heard a loud crash sound and my car's sunroof unexpectedly shattered. The inside glass panel looks like it's shattered and it caused tiny glass shards to fall inside the vehicle onto my right arm and the surrounding area. I closed the cover to prevent more from falling. This occurred without any prior warning, signs, or symptoms such as unusual noises or warning lights from the car. This incident posed a significant safety risk, not only due to the distraction, shock of the sudden noise, glass falling, injury in a potential accident, but also the potential for physical harm from the glass shards. Thankfully, no injuries occurred, but the potential for serious harm was evident. This problem has not yet been inspected by the dealer or confirmed by an independent service center, and there has been no opportunity for an inspection by any manufacturer, police, or insurance representatives. However, I've reached out to Mazda, both locally and corporate and am receiving a run-around, no surprise. I will attach photos of the inside and the outside of the glass. The outside photo was taken after the cover was closed. However, the broken sunroof is available for inspection upon request.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-03
- VIN: JM1BPBNY7M1
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Brakes are underpowered especially when hot. Drove 20-30 minutes in traffic and when decelerating from 60 mph highway in turn lane to turn into neighborhood the brakes felt very soft . Car only has 28k miles on it and pads have plenty of life left. Have seen similar complaints on online forums.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-06-15
- VIN: JM1BPBNY7M1
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Driving on a remote highway in northern WI and low oil light illuminated, 1000 miles before oil change was due with less than 10k miles on the vehicle. Made it to a gas station and oil was a quart low. Vehicle burns over a quart every oil change interval, since this has been occurring since day 1 it is likely going to cause premature engine failure which would be a safety issue.
WHEELS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-30
- VIN: JM1BPBML1M1
- Components: WHEELS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: For the past 7 months (since July 2023) the passenger rear tire keeps loosing air pressure about every two weeks requiring more air. It always drops to 10 points below the other tires. The tires have been rotated twice so it is not a problem with the tire. I believe there is a recall for the same or similar issue on Mazda 3s just not including my VIN#. I brought my car to good year a few times unable to stop this from happening.
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-15
- VIN: 3MZBPBBM8MM
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: A bolt head underneath the car snapped for the steering mechanism. The problem was indicated by a clanking noise I heard for many 1000s of miles. It's been as long as I remember, but I had no idea what it really meant. It's 2.7 years old with 30,653 miles right now. There were no warnings. The wheel could have come off at any moment I was driving it. The bolt was likely over-torqued or had a manufacturing defect causing it to snap. I have pictures for when the car was propped up at a technician. One side is completely non rusted. The other side is showing rust ONLY from where the bolt was covering, so rust is an unlikely cause.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-30
- VIN: JM1BPACL5M1
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Part easily break away during washing. Fuel door cover lid panel (BDYT-42-411) broke in automatic car wash.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-04-05
- VIN: JM1BPBNY0M1
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Received Low Oil Level warning ... checked engine oil and it is under the minimum level on the dip stick. Car has only 11,725 miles
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-01-07
- VIN: 3MZBPBEY1MM
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: Experiencing a known excessive oil consumption issue. Low engine oil warning light came on and upon checking, oil was low. This occured at 4000 to 4200 miles. It occured again about 4000 miles later and again at a similar interval. I notified the dealer and scheduled a repair date but I am concerned of other possible damage that may have already occured due to this issue. An oxygen sensor needs to be replaced and is most likely due to the engine malfunction. The cause of the consumption is said to be damage to the valve seals on the exhaust side.
SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-01-30
- VIN: JM1BPBJY4M1
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: During a night drive, travelling approx. 40mph, car warning system audio blared a warning and suddenly braked causing car to skid (was raining) and causing driver to also jolt forward with momentum. There was very little time between beginning of audio warning and car slamming on brakes.
SEAT BELTS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-01-06
- VIN: JM1BPAML6M1
- Components: SEAT BELTS
- Summary: The latches inside the driver's seatbelt receptacle feel like they wear out over time. The only reason I can tell is because there is a really noticeable creaking that develops from inside the receptacle while the seatbelt is connected. This is worse for drivers with bigger waists and as the driver's waist continues to tug on the seatbelt during operation, the creaking gets worse over time. There are no electronic warnings. The seatbelt still properly connects and there are no electronic messages saying that anything is wrong with the seatbelt. My driver's original seatbelt receptacle has already been replaced once under warranty at a Mazda dealership. Now the second seatbelt receptacle is starting to do the same thing again after about 6 months of use. I fear that even if I get it replaced a second time, this will just continue to happen. Perhaps there is a manufacturing defect. As this issue continues to get worse, I fear that this creaking will develop into a major failure with the seatbelt connection itself.
STRUCTURE,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-01-02
- VIN: 3MZBPBBMXMM
- Components: STRUCTURE,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Car emits a very audible squeak when shifting right above 30mph and 40mph, car surges at lower and constant speeds, tach will slowly drop when applying throttle, surge slightly, then function as normal again
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-02-29
- VIN: JM1BPBNY6M1
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Purchased car in January 2020 and within a month/few thousand miles the low engine oil light came on. Almost two years later car continues to burn excessive oil triggering low engine oil light. Dealer doesn’t acknowledge an issue, Mazda still doesn’t have a repair. Owners required to pay for excess servicing until a repair is issued. This is a widespread problem impacting the engine.
ENGINE PROBLEM

SERVICE BRAKES,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-09-19
- VIN: JM1BPBJY2M1
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Strong unburnt fuel smell had just started at 6700 miles. Mazda Dealership stated that they would not be looking at my car and that gas smells are normal... After this encounter, I had 2 mechanics look at my car. Both had concluded that the smell predominantly comes from near the rear driver wheel, under the body, and that it is an extremely dangerous situation. I am a full time student and do not feel safe driving this car to class but I have no choice since Mazda is neglecting this issue. I also reported to the dealer that my brakes seem to be defective since they are causing excessive shaking when applied. Dealer informed me that they do not warranty the OEM brakes that came on my car, however Mazda Corporate informed me that they do. I do not feel safe driving this car knowing the car may combust and harm me and others on the road. The brakes also do not inspire confidence. A complaint has been filed with Mazda Corporate.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-06-17
- VIN: JM1BPBEY2M1
- Components: ENGINE

AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-08-31
- VIN: JM1BPBNY2M1
- Components: AIR BAGS

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-07-01
- VIN: JM1BPBAY6M1
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The engine is burning oil. Oil and filter were changed at 5000 miles. At about 9000 miles, the engine oil level light came on. Topped off with oil and took to dealer, they confirmed no oil leaks and changed the oil.
WHEELS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-08-14
- VIN: JM1BPBML9M1
- Components: WHEELS
- Summary: This new car has less than 8000 miles on it and suddenly 3 of 4 BRIDGESTONE TIRES Turanza el440 215/45R18 89 have sidewall bubbles. Interesting that there are a ton of issues w sidewall Bridgestone tires on line yet the dealership keeps claiming the car must have been run over a median? Without any damage anywhere on the car? Come on.. it is clearly a manufacturer defect. They have history with sidewall bubbling. Consumers getting shafted at best and maimed at worst. Do something please!
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-08-08
- VIN: JM1BPAML6M1

- VIN: JM1BPBNY7M1
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: At around 3600 Miles my Mazda which I had for only a couple of months displayed a low engine oil light which required a visit to the dealership. This was under normal driving conditions.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-06-14
- VIN: JM1BPBJY1M1
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: My Mazda 3 2.5T has been burning oil in excess. The car has a total of 24,000 miles and has been serviced 3 times. I have had to add oil in between every service. The oil has been completely burned off by 4,000-5,000 miles. I have noticed that other people have been posting about the same issues online. When talking to the dealership they state that they have noticed this issue with the 2.5T’s but offer no fix and seem to overfill the engine oil to try and compensate.

I have been driving my Mazda 3 since June 2021. The car boasts a number of impressive features, including a well-designed ergonomic interior, a sleek finish, responsive steering, and a sporty feel. The handling is also top-notch, and the car has plenty of power. However, there are a few areas where the car falls short. The location and radio controls could be improved, and the Mazda navigation system is very difficult to use. Additionally, the parking brake button can be quite annoying. Despite these drawbacks, the car's fuel consumption has been lower than expected, averaging around 20.0 mpg even with mostly city driving and only 20% on highways.

I had a tough time saying goodbye to my 2011 Mazda 6, which I had for 11 years and loved dearly. Naturally, I went straight to Mazda for my next car and didn't even consider another dealership. The Mazda 3 is a fantastic car, even though I wish they still made the 6 model. It has a 2.5L inline 4 engine, Bose speakers, 18-inch wheels, lumbar support for the seats, and a lovely leather interior. The ride is incredibly smooth, and it accelerates beautifully (I don't think the turbo is necessary, to be honest). The premium trim level even has a heads-up display that shows the speed limit and directions on the windshield. It's a great choice, and you can't go wrong with it. I initially wanted the carbon edition because it looks amazing, but after sitting in both the carbon edition and the premium trim level, I could tell that the latter was more comfortable, which is crucial for me because I have a bad back. Once you download the Mazda app, you can even remote start the car, which is fantastic. I could go on and on, but I suggest you visit your nearest Mazda dealership and see for yourself!

I purchased a 2021 Mazda 3 Turbo Premium Plus Hatchback almost a month ago and I am absolutely in love with it! After searching for the right vehicle for almost a year, I decided to go with Mazda because of its rave reviews by both consumers and critics. Nothing drives and feels like a Mazda. The materials feel superb and the car takes curbs more smoothly than any vehicle I have ever driven. Even my mom was impressed with how the car takes curbs. I also went with Mazda after having a great experience with my 2007 Mazda 3 Hatchback. It has been a good car and only has 120,000 miles on it. Although the paint on that model did not hold up as long as I thought it should have, every brand has its own particular issues. I am hoping the paint on this one lasts much longer (this one is also white where the 2007 is purple). Regardless, the quality of Mazda is up there with Lexus. I joke with my mom and tell her I feel like I am driving a Lexus. Right now, I have almost 900 miles on it and have had no issues (e.g., technical, electrical, quality, safety, etc.). The only downside I would list is that the back is tight. I would not recommend it as a family car (unless it was for a small family). However, if it is mostly you and say a spouse, and you love to drive a car for the experience, then this is definitely the vehicle for you. I will try to give an update around 3000-5000 miles.

That sounds great! I'm so glad to hear that you had the best driving experience ever!

The car experienced an issue with the airbag system shortly after purchase, which was initially thought to be a faulty sensor. However, upon bringing it to the dealer, it was determined that a new driver side airbag was needed. Despite the inconvenience, I chose to wait for the repair rather than accept a loaner car. Unfortunately, the repair took longer than expected, but the issue was eventually resolved after 5 weeks. Although there was a subsequent issue with the airbag sensor, it was addressed in a timely manner. Overall, I remain confident in the quality of my new car.

I was really looking forward to test driving and potentially buying this car. However, after test driving the base model, I was underwhelmed. The engine lacked acceleration and torque, which was disappointing. While the turbo option may be appealing, it comes at a significant price increase. Additionally, the cabin felt quite cramped, especially in the rear where it was difficult to fit a car seat. Even the front seat felt cramped, similar to driving a Miata without the fun. Overall, I was disappointed with my experience.

So I really wanted to love this car, I mean I did buy it. Problem is... I really don't. I have three Mazda 3's The 2021 AWD turbo and two 2010 Mazda 3 GT that I bought for my kids. One I handed down and drove for years. I really liked it. Thus the 2021 purchase. The car is nice inside. It's minimal, but tastefully done with a nice feel and finish. that's where it ends for me. I find the motor laggy. I hit it and wait. Wait for it... no seriously it's fast, trust me, here it comes... yawn* anytime now. When it goes, it goes. but I'm not blown away. I had a 2010 cobalt SS and it was way faster.Handling. Dry conditions. It does NOT feel like the handling matches the engine, even with the lag. The breaks do not feel like they will stop you. The suspension feels... light? fluffy almost.dont get me wrong, I'm not saying a "smooth" ride. It's not "tight" and "sharp".Snow... i'm from Ontario. I dont have experience with AWD. but this thing is scary in snow. I drove a mustang GT back ion the 90s in the snow. If I am saying its scary... it's scary! It feels the same as the Mustang. It responds just like a rear wheel Mustang. I can fish tail around corners if I give it a little throttle. Where is the front wheel pull? Why is the back end breaking free? Does this thing not have traction control? I dont get it. Im actually thinking of taking it back and getting an SUV
Zion Satterfield 2024-08-28
What a disappointment!! Yes, I bought one. The suspension is a joke. You feel every bump. I can't believe all the positive reviews. The zoom zoom is all gone!!!
Jarrett Aufderhar 2024-04-09
I love almost everything about this car, but unfortunately the seats are not very comfortable for me. Coming from a Toyota Matrix, I never had any issues with car seats in the past, so I didn't even consider it during the test drive. However, after driving it for two months, I still can't find a comfortable position to drive in for longer than 30 minutes. The bolstering is quite narrow and hits me in an uncomfortable spot, making long drives difficult. I wish the seats were less 'huggy' and more accommodating for different preferences. Unfortunately, I will have to trade it in for something else. Thank you for your understanding.
