The Genesis GV80 (Korean: 제네시스 GV80) is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Genesis, Hyundai's luxury division.
Overview
Internally codenamed JX1, the vehicle was leaked in 3D in October 2019 and officially unveiled in January 2020 as the first SUV for the Genesis brand. It is a collaborative effort between Genesis design teams in Korea, Europe, and the United States. Built on a new rear-wheel-drive architecture, the doors, hood, and tailgate are made of aluminum.
The GV80 is available with three powertrains, a turbocharged 2.5-liter unit with 304 PS (224 kW; 300 hp), a turbocharged 3.5-liter unit with 380 PS (279 kW; 375 hp), and a turbocharged 3.0-liter diesel with 278 PS (204 kW; 274 hp) horsepower, which will only be available in select markets.
It features a navigation-based smart cruise control (ASCC), remote smart parking assist, an NFC digital key, an around view monitor (AVM), 22-inch wheels, Nappa leather seating, a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment display with the 21-speaker Lexicon audio system, electric side curtains, and driver-controlled second- and third-row seating.
The safety system includes ten airbags, forward collision-avoidance assist, reverse parking collision-avoidance assist, driver attention warning, blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, automatic high beam assist, and lane keep assist (LKAS).
Claimed CO2 emissions range from 175 to 202 g/km (9.9 to 11.5 oz/mi) (2.5 L petrol), from 199 to 221 g/km (11.3 to 12.5 oz/mi) (3.5 L petrol) and from 164 to 188 g/km (9.3 to 10.7 oz/mi) (3.0 L diesel). The EU target for the CO2 emissions of new passenger cars is 95 g/km (5.4 oz/mi) in 2020. Combined fuel consumption ranges from 8.5 to 9.7 km/L (11.8 to 10.3 L/100 km; 24 to 27 mpg‑imp; 20 to 23 mpg‑US) (2.5 L petrol), from 7.8 to 8.6 km/L (12.8 to 11.6 L/100 km; 22 to 24 mpg‑imp; 18 to 20 mpg‑US) (2.5 L petrol), and from 10.4 to 11.8 km/L (9.6 to 8.5 L/100 km; 29 to 33 mpg‑imp; 24 to 28 mpg‑US) (diesel).

- Summary: The electrical wiring harnesses affecting numerous safety systems (forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning) have been chewed through by rodents. Upon further research it was determined that starting in 2016 Asian automotive manufacturers (Nissan, Toyota, Kia, Hyundai) began using soy-based insulation in their wiring harnesses as alternatives to petroleum-based insulation. Rodents (mice, squirrels, etc.) are attracted to the wiring harnesses. The resultant damage and safety concerns led customers to file several lawsuits against the manufacturers. It is not clear whether Hyundai stopped the use of these soy-based wiring harnesses after 2021. Genesis is a spin-off of Hyundai, leveraging common parts. It appears that these soy-based wiring harnesses are being used in some of the 2022 GV80 models. Genesis currently burdens its customers with the cost to troubleshoot and replace these harnesses. Given the previous lawsuits and the continue risks of using these wiring harnesses in key safety systems, it is recommended that Hyundai and Genesis issue manufacturer recalls to ensure these harnesses are replaced with materials that do not attract rodents. We first started experiencing intermittent failures in in the highway driving assist system. Then, forward collision warning and lane departure warning systems. These became more pronounced until we brought the vehicle into Pearson Genesis of Richmond on 06/28/2024. After troubleshooting and inspecting the automobile, the technician showed us pictures of where rodents had eaten through wiring harnesses (attached). The cost to repair this over two visits totaled $957.42. I contacted Genesis headquarters suggesting they investigate this further, given the lawsuits. They agreed to offset my cost by $672, but did not agree to address the underlying problem.

The contact stated that in November of 2023 while driving at 80 MPH with cruise control engaged and approaching another vehicle, the contact changed lanes and the vehicle automatically slowed down. The contact stated that while returning to the set speed, the warning lights except for the check engine warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the vehicle was diagnosed, and it was determined that the battery was not maintaining enough voltage for the ECU and that the battery needed to be replaced. The battery was not replaced because the dealer did not have the battery in stock. The contact was informed that he could go to any Genesis dealer, and the battery would be replaced if it was in stock. The contact drove the vehicle to Houston, TX in December of 2023 and the failure reoccurred with the check engine warning light and other unknown warning lights illuminated. The dealer, Genesis of Spring (20440 Interstate 45 N, Spring, TX 77373) informed the contact that the battery did not need to be replaced but the ECU needed to be replaced. The contact stated that the ECU was replaced. The contact stated that on [XXX], while his wife was driving and had stopped the vehicle in the driveway, without warning all the side air bags and seat air bags deployed. The seat air bags located in the front driver side and passenger seats as well as the seat air bags in the rear driver seat and passenger seat. The frontal driver’s side and passenger’s side air bags had not deploy. The contact stated that the air bags warning light was not illuminated before or after the failure. The Insurance provider was contacted and had the vehicle towed to a USAA repair facility. The vehicle was inspected by a Genesis engineer at the repair facility. The manufacturer sent an email stating that no assistance would be offered as the air bags had not deployed due to a manufacturing defect. A case was opened with the manufacturer. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 24,000. The VIN was not available.

- Summary: UNINTENDED ACCELERATION!! 2022 GENESIS GV80 2.5T Prestige model. 60 miles after I had the fuel pump replaced due to a recall on the fuel pump, car was totaled. It was complete luck that I or others WERE NOT KILLED. The vehicle was sitting still with engine running and all of a sudden just accelerated up to about 40+ mph. I had to steer into parked car to stop my vehicle. The gear shift would not go into neutral or reverse. entire experience took 6-8 seconds. Air bag saved me. The car had just come from the Genesis service center 60 miles prior to incident. Was in excellent condition with only 6190 on it. VERY SCARY..If I had been on the highway or going through an intersection people would have been killed, as car kept gaining speed. My insurance company has sent out an independent investigator to read data from the car-have not heard back yet. Police report was filed. NO warning light or any thing unusual prior to incident

- Summary: My Genesis is going to get me killed! The dealership has informed me that since it doesn't give them a code, they can't fix the issue. Here is a brief summary of my issue. On 8/2/23, while in the process of a lane change, my vehicle goes into limp mode, and I am almost rear-ended by a large Ford truck! I immediately look at the dash and see it is displaying "Park" and I switch it to "Drive". My vehicle picks up speed, and accident has been avoided. On 8/8, I left my home and went approximately 10 minutes away. I was in the store for about 15 minutes. When I walked up to the vehicle, I noticed that I had to use my key to unlock the door, which wasn't common nor did the side mirrors automatically unfold. Once inside the vehicle, every time I attempted to start the vehicle it would hesitate and turn-off immediately. Eventually I was able to get it started, so I put it in reverse. After moving 2-3 feet, it completely shut down while blocking several parking spots. My vehicle started, but by this time, the vehicle has been inoperable for approximately 45 minutes in 95-degree weather! I then contacted Genesis Roadside Assistance and arranged for the vehicle to be towed to Dick Smith Hyundai in Greenville, SC. 8/26 - My son was approximately an hour away in the vehicle, and it broke down. Since the dealership informed me that it was a battery issue, my son attempted to jump the vehicle off. The vehicle had to be towed. 9/6, I was taking a right out of the parking lot, once I got midway in the road (not completing my turn), I heard a grinding noise, the dash switched to park, and speed rapidly decreased. At the same time, the traffic that was halted by a red light is now rapidly approaching. I informed my daughter to brace herself, as I slowly prayed and rolled to the medium. The technicians has informed me that the vehicle is unsafe to drive. They kept the vehicle a month. I get it this week and it breaks down 4 times. I was almost hit when it broke down between 2 lanes.

My family’s safety was constantly at risk, so we immediately brought the vehicle to a Genesis dealership in Houston Tuesday August 8, 2023. It is now 9/21/23, and the fuel pump has not arrived yet because it is on back order.

- Summary: I have been driving my car and it will automatically flip to neutral and start blinking all sorts of engine lights. I can sometimes stop the car and restart it, and it will be okay, but it typically takes a few tries. It has happened after I start my car and am in the driveway, when I'm going ~40MPH and when I'm on the interstate going >70MPH. I have an infant and have been in the car with him when this has happened. This is obviously anxiety inducing anytime I get in the car, but even more so when I need to transport him. I have requested a loaner car from multiple Genesis dealerships until they can diagnose and fix it, but most do not have appointments until September and expect me to drive my car until then.

- Summary: While driving 45 mph on a straight stretch of a state road, I hit the brakes multiple times and decelerated so I could take the hard right exit and then make an immediate sharp left in a residential area. As I moved to the exiting lane, I turned on the right turn signal and eased off the brake. The car revved HARD, accelerated immediately and the cruise control icon + 58 mph began flashing on the display above the speedometer. I slammed the brakes to stop the car. I had not intentionally nor even accidentally turned on the cruise control (adaptive or otherwise) at any point during this trip or in any days leading up to it. I had been driving for just shy of 4 miles when this happened and had hit the brakes multiple times on this trip due to multiple sharp turns prior to the straight stretch. I was the lead car at various points in this trip, so if adaptive cruise had been on, I would’ve accelerated prior to this incident. Additionally, hitting the brake multiple times when I was traveling would’ve turned off cruise control had it been on already. We reported this to Genesis immediately and have awaited some closure, but they have been dismissive and unconcerned despite multiple points of outreach from us. We stopped driving the GV80 after a trip to the Genesis service center failed to provide any resolution. We are uncertain if the car is safe to drive and do not wish to chance it and would like some resolution.

- Summary: 1) This vehicle was taken in for the seatbelt pretensioner issue and was turned away due to 'no replacement parts on hand'. To be clear an appointment was made indicating this is the service needed and the dealer could not complete the work. 2) Additionally this vehicle suffers from a sudden loss of power on the highway. If vehicles are following too closely there could be a serious accident. The failure mode of this condition is triggered by high temperatures 105 to 107 F there is a persistent DTC code P0087000 which indicates inadequate fuel pressure and maybe caused by fuel pump, pressure regulator, or sensor. At least once, when the car cools off the main computer (referred to 'the head unit' by Genesis customer care) can be 'reset', and all DTCs are cleared and Check Engine Light is cleared. Several owners of G70, GV70, and GV80 owners are reporting similar "sudden loss of engine power" on the owners forum.

Cylinder chamber not creating enough pressure therefore staling the engine. now since april still waiting for a new engine to be installed.

- Summary: Engine had first incident not turning in one morning and check engine light showing up. Vehicle had to be towed to neares dealer for repair. They stated there was a dirty coil and that problem was resolved. Two days later check engine e light again came back on and vehicle engine would rattle and stall. Dealer stated it was bad fuel to wait a few days. Took back to retailer this time the states there was a malfunctioning fuel injector that was replaced. 1 week later engine stalled in middle of busy main avenue in town and once again had to be towed to dealer for repair: vehicle has been at dealer since October 28 ,2022. They have replicated the problem and still can’t fix the problem have been without a vehicle for 3 months now. No loaner or rental car provided. Ci tasted manufacturer and still no remedy. Please investigate.

Upon inspection, the contact discovered fuel leaking from under the engine cover. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer for repair and the contact was given a loaner vehicle of the same year make and model. Days later, the same failure occurred with the loaner vehicle. While in for service, the dealer diagnosed that the low-pressure fuel line had been chew and damaged by rodents. The low-pressure fuel line was replaced and the vehicle was retrieved. The contact stated that days later the failure reoccurred. The manufacturer was also notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 4,000.

- Summary: My GV80 has been randomly shutting down at low RPMs for the past 8 weeks this happens WHEN I AM DRIVING and this is happening to other GV80 owners per my service manager I spoke to yesterday. I need a new fuel pump to fix the issue but they are on back order so I am left to drive a VERY UNSAFE VEHICLE until they get this part in. This issue does not show up with any diagnostic tools (autel, global, etc) no check engine lights ever come on and my connected car health always show healthy but my car has literally shutdown on the interstate and in the middle of many roads it is horrifying and the service manager told me ONE of his customers told him he only drives in the right lane now so he can pull off quickly when his GV80 dies. This is a much bigger and more dangerous issue please look into it!

- Summary: The vehicle has an issue stalling while in operation. The vehicle is not safe, especially when the vehicle stalls while operating in traffic. The issue puts many drivers and passengers at risk while operating on a roadway. The vehicle stalled in the following scenarios: entering a freeway, vehicle became unresponsive, but resumed power; entering traffic on an arterial roadway, but resumed power; turning at an intersection on an arterial roadway, vehicle lost power, vehicle became unresponsive and had to coast to a stop to be restarted; driving on a freeway at 70mph, vehicle became unresponsive and had to coast to a stop to be restarted; driving on an arterial roadway at 40mph, where vehicle became unresponsive and had to coast to a stop on a side street to be restarted. Retailer dealership was able to replicate the issue "three times", per the dealership, but did not get an error code or trouble code to fix the issue. On two occasions, dealership refused to address the issue further until a trouble or error code could be found. Dealership refused to keep the vehicle and to provide a loaner vehicle, despite validating that an issue existed with this vehicle and at least four other Genesis GV80 vehicles in Arizona. On August 22, 2022, dealership indicated that they would replace the high pressure fuel pump, which was an issue in the 2021 GV80 that resulted in a recall.

- Summary: The engine stalls as if it's not receiving fuel. It has stalled on the open highway and when pulling off from a stop. The vehicle has completely shutoff several times in the middle of traffic at the stop light or entering the highway.
SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

- Summary: Seat belt does not retract properly. Often has slack and has to be tugged multiple times or pulled all the way out and then tugged with harder pressure to fully retract properly. This is not safe to drive around as the additional slack does not protect me in the event of a crash or accident. I took my car to the dealership to be repaired but was told I needed to book an appointment. The Service Manager simply tugged on the seatbelt until it retracted and told me I was good to go for the time being, which did not satisfy my safety concern. I have not had the seatbelt inspected by any government safety bodies just yet and no warning lights or sounds unless I unclick the seatbelt latch.

IT FEELS UNSAFE TO DRIVE THE THIS VEHICLE AS I AM WORRIED WHAT IF THE ENGINE FULLY BREAKS DOWN MID DRIVE OR SOMEWHERE PARKED LEAVING ME STRANDED

- Summary: Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2022-2023 Genesis GV70, GV80, G80, and G90 vehicles. The fuel pump may fail, which can result in a loss of drive power.
- Consequence: A loss of drive power can increase the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Dealers will inspect and replace the fuel pump assembly, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 7, 2024. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 022G. This recall is an expansion of recall number 23V-630.

- Summary: Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2020-2023 Genesis GV80, 2021-2023 Genesis G80, 2022-2023 Genesis GV70, and 2023 Genesis GV60 vehicles. In the event of a crash, the front driver-side and/or passenger-side seat belt pretensioners may explode upon deployment.
- Consequence: An exploding seat belt pretensioner can project metal fragments into the vehicle, strike vehicle occupants, and result in injury.
- Remedy: Dealers will secure the seat belt pretensioners with a cap, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 14, 2023. For GV60 owners, Interim notification letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed April 14, 2023. A second notice will be sent once the final remedy is available. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 012G. This recall supersedes and expands recall number 21V-796. Vehicles previously repaired under recall 21V-796 will need to have the new remedy completed.

I have the 2.5 AWD Prestige model and I must say, it is very comfortable. I love the look of the car, especially the 22” wheels and the massaging driver seat. The valet service with loaner car is also a great feature. Overall, I believe that you get a lot of value for your money with this car. However, there are two downsides to consider. Firstly, there is no spare tire and secondly, the gas mileage is not great when driving in town. Despite these minor issues, I have had the car for 8 months and have not experienced a single problem.

This is a great truck with unlimited features. I have never bought a truck that has everything in it like this one does. If you want a truck that stands out from the rest, this is the one for you.

Leased new GV80 2.5L Turbo and after 1k miles, I'm really enjoying how smooth and easy it is to drive. Although I've read about some concerning issues other owners have experienced, I'm happy to report that I haven't had any issues so far. I suspect Genesis is doing a great job of resolving these issues. The GV80 is superbly built and every surface area and control is top notch. Despite its size, it handles like a smaller vehicle. I'm getting great mileage too, with 28 on the highway and 23 in the city.

I would rate the ride a '4+'! However, I must admit that it can be a bit scary when the car veers slightly out of lane and pulls you back. For a split second, you may feel like you're out of control. As a 67-year-old who spent 20 years in software, I find the advanced technology inside a bit frustrating at times. For instance, I received a text message saying my window was open, but when I checked, none of them were! I contacted Connected Services five times for five separate issues, but unfortunately, no one was able to provide me with any answers. Despite this, I still believe that the ride is great!

Handles well and rides comfortably. I loved it until I had to upgrade the GPS system. Unfortunately, since the upgrade, the weather system has become inoperable and the voice commands are not working. I have been to the dealership four times to reload the system with the same results. The Connected Services department can only recommend reloading and they have no idea how to fix the issue. I understand how frustrating this can be. I suggest contacting the dealership to see if they can offer any further assistance. As of now, I would not recommend buying this car until they figure out how to fix their system.

I am confident in giving this car a one-star rating due to the issues I have experienced within the first week of purchase. Despite being unsure if the RPM issue was normal, I continued to experience warning notifications while driving in regards to the park/drive dial. Currently, the car will not start and is unable to detect both key fobs. As a brand new car, this level of unreliability is unacceptable. I am hopeful that Genesis will replace the car and provide a more dependable vehicle.

The vehicle is experiencing some cosmetic issues, such as paint falling off around the wheel wells and rust appearing behind the chrome trim on all doors. These issues can be addressed with proper maintenance and care.

I have owned my GV80 Advance+V6T-AWD since 6/2021, but unfortunately, it has spent most of its time in the dealership for repairs, ranging from 1 week to 3+ months intervals. I have experienced several issues with the GV80, including lane departure, front sensing, frontal collision, engine light on, and other system errors, all while it has less than 4,000 miles. As of 3/2022, the Genesis Navigation fails to route to anywhere, unless it’s offline! It is disappointing that the dealership experience has not been up to par, especially since Genesis is a fairly new luxury brand. I feel like they treat us like we have a $25k Hyundai, even though it costs almost $75k (included markup on chip shortage). It is surprising that even my daily driver, Honda, and the Honda dealership has better services. I hope that Genesis will take customer experiences and reliability seriously and invest in a separate dealership, not the current Hyundai/Genesis setup. By the way, I have fewer issues with my 20-30+ weekend classic cars in terms of reliability! Additionally, the advertised Genesis Valet Service (sales gimmick) is not as great as it seems. Their schedule is always several weeks away, and they mostly show up with a lower model vehicle as a loaner if you use it. Hence, they always recommend us to drop the vehicle ourselves to the dealership.
