The Genesis GV80 (Korean: 제네시스 GV80) is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Genesis, Hyundai's luxury division.
Overview
Internally codenamed JX1, the vehicle was leaked in 3D in October 2019 and officially unveiled in January 2020 as the first SUV for the Genesis brand. It is a collaborative effort between Genesis design teams in Korea, Europe, and the United States. Built on a new rear-wheel-drive architecture, the doors, hood, and tailgate are made of aluminum.
The GV80 is available with three powertrains, a turbocharged 2.5-liter unit with 304 PS (224 kW; 300 hp), a turbocharged 3.5-liter unit with 380 PS (279 kW; 375 hp), and a turbocharged 3.0-liter diesel with 278 PS (204 kW; 274 hp) horsepower, which will only be available in select markets.
It features a navigation-based smart cruise control (ASCC), remote smart parking assist, an NFC digital key, an around view monitor (AVM), 22-inch wheels, Nappa leather seating, a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment display with the 21-speaker Lexicon audio system, electric side curtains, and driver-controlled second- and third-row seating.
The safety system includes ten airbags, forward collision-avoidance assist, reverse parking collision-avoidance assist, driver attention warning, blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, automatic high beam assist, and lane keep assist (LKAS).
Claimed CO2 emissions range from 175 to 202 g/km (9.9 to 11.5 oz/mi) (2.5 L petrol), from 199 to 221 g/km (11.3 to 12.5 oz/mi) (3.5 L petrol) and from 164 to 188 g/km (9.3 to 10.7 oz/mi) (3.0 L diesel). The EU target for the CO2 emissions of new passenger cars is 95 g/km (5.4 oz/mi) in 2020. Combined fuel consumption ranges from 8.5 to 9.7 km/L (11.8 to 10.3 L/100 km; 24 to 27 mpg‑imp; 20 to 23 mpg‑US) (2.5 L petrol), from 7.8 to 8.6 km/L (12.8 to 11.6 L/100 km; 22 to 24 mpg‑imp; 18 to 20 mpg‑US) (2.5 L petrol), and from 10.4 to 11.8 km/L (9.6 to 8.5 L/100 km; 29 to 33 mpg‑imp; 24 to 28 mpg‑US) (diesel).

- Summary: Purchased my 2024 GV80 3.5t in June of 2024 and have been experiencing intermittent issues with the acceleration. Car hesitates when accelerating and can causing accidents while at an intersection making a turn. I have bought the car into the dealership three times, and they are unable to reproduce. Unfortunately, after reading the complaints and symptoms of the fuel pump recall for the 2021-2023 this issue seems identical. I have reach out to Genesis Corporate and they are no help and don't return calls or emails for days.

Experiencing clunking and or jerking while driving no matter if speed acceleration/deceleration. Infotainment system goes out of function without notice - radio, sound, navigation, and safety cameras included. I feel unsafe during driving this vehicle as it does not give any warning when these issues occur. Once in traffic I had to slam on breaks after the truck just shot off after lightly pressing the gas to move forward. Whenever the vehicle is taken in for inspection, no issues are found. I reported the clunking before, the dealer claimed it was a faulty fuel pump. This is a brand-new vehicle and none of these issues should be happening.

- Summary: Total battery system failure to where vehicle would not start/restart, or if started via jumping, would stall out shortly thereafter. Battery problem to point to where jump starting is difficult due to shorted battery lowering availalble power to start/restart engine. This could have caused unexpected removal of power from the vehcile during traveling or in unsafe areas. This appears to be a very common problem with this vehicle as seen on various online forums and lack of part (battery) availability.

- Summary: The electrical wiring harnesses affecting numerous safety systems (forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning) have been chewed through by rodents. Upon further research it was determined that starting in 2016 Asian automotive manufacturers (Nissan, Toyota, Kia, Hyundai) began using soy-based insulation in their wiring harnesses as alternatives to petroleum-based insulation. Rodents (mice, squirrels, etc.) are attracted to the wiring harnesses. The resultant damage and safety concerns led customers to file several lawsuits against the manufacturers. It is not clear whether Hyundai stopped the use of these soy-based wiring harnesses after 2021. Genesis is a spin-off of Hyundai, leveraging common parts. It appears that these soy-based wiring harnesses are being used in some of the 2022 GV80 models. Genesis currently burdens its customers with the cost to troubleshoot and replace these harnesses. Given the previous lawsuits and the continue risks of using these wiring harnesses in key safety systems, it is recommended that Hyundai and Genesis issue manufacturer recalls to ensure these harnesses are replaced with materials that do not attract rodents. We first started experiencing intermittent failures in in the highway driving assist system. Then, forward collision warning and lane departure warning systems. These became more pronounced until we brought the vehicle into Pearson Genesis of Richmond on 06/28/2024. After troubleshooting and inspecting the automobile, the technician showed us pictures of where rodents had eaten through wiring harnesses (attached). The cost to repair this over two visits totaled $957.42. I contacted Genesis headquarters suggesting they investigate this further, given the lawsuits. They agreed to offset my cost by $672, but did not agree to address the underlying problem.

- Summary: The contact owns a 2022 Genesis GV80. The contact stated that in November of 2023 while driving at 80 MPH with cruise control engaged and approaching another vehicle, the contact changed lanes and the vehicle automatically slowed down. The contact stated that while returning to the set speed, the warning lights except for the check engine warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the vehicle was diagnosed, and it was determined that the battery was not maintaining enough voltage for the ECU and that the battery needed to be replaced. The battery was not replaced because the dealer did not have the battery in stock. The contact was informed that he could go to any Genesis dealer, and the battery would be replaced if it was in stock. The contact drove the vehicle to Houston, TX in December of 2023 and the failure reoccurred with the check engine warning light and other unknown warning lights illuminated. The dealer, Genesis of Spring (20440 Interstate 45 N, Spring, TX 77373) informed the contact that the battery did not need to be replaced but the ECU needed to be replaced. The contact stated that the ECU was replaced. The contact stated that on [XXX], while his wife was driving and had stopped the vehicle in the driveway, without warning all the side air bags and seat air bags deployed. The seat air bags located in the front driver side and passenger seats as well as the seat air bags in the rear driver seat and passenger seat. The frontal driver’s side and passenger’s side air bags had not deploy. The contact stated that the air bags warning light was not illuminated before or after the failure. The Insurance provider was contacted and had the vehicle towed to a USAA repair facility. The vehicle was inspected by a Genesis engineer at the repair facility. The manufacturer sent an email stating that no assistance would be offered as the air bags had not deployed due to a manufacturing defect. A case was opened with the manufacturer. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 24,000. The VIN was not available.

- Summary: UNINTENDED ACCELERATION!! 2022 GENESIS GV80 2.5T Prestige model. 60 miles after I had the fuel pump replaced due to a recall on the fuel pump, car was totaled. It was complete luck that I or others WERE NOT KILLED. The vehicle was sitting still with engine running and all of a sudden just accelerated up to about 40+ mph. I had to steer into parked car to stop my vehicle. The gear shift would not go into neutral or reverse. entire experience took 6-8 seconds. Air bag saved me. The car had just come from the Genesis service center 60 miles prior to incident. Was in excellent condition with only 6190 on it. VERY SCARY..If I had been on the highway or going through an intersection people would have been killed, as car kept gaining speed. My insurance company has sent out an independent investigator to read data from the car-have not heard back yet. Police report was filed. NO warning light or any thing unusual prior to incident

The next day, car door opened without issue and the car was fine to drive. The 3rd day, the car went dead with no response to the key. The 4th day it came back to live again. However, the car went completely stalled during driving. The engine stopped and no lights or electricity can be turned on. After 15 seconds, the car restarted by itself. I sent the car to dealership but they cannot find any issue.

The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, where it was test-driven, and the contact was informed that the odor was no longer present. The contact stated that upon picking up the vehicle, the failure persisted. The dealer was contacted but no assistance was provided. Additionally, the contact stated that the vehicle was experiencing hesitation while driving. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

- Summary: Safety Issues: • Battery runs out of charge within one day without any rational reason (i.e., no lights, no alarm, no equipment in use) which put me at risk since the car would stop at any time without any warning. • Then, the Genesis Connected Services will sent alert messages every three (3) minutes for minor events (e.g., washer fluid low, window open, door unlocked…). Those same two problems were reproduced at HYUNDAI RICK CASE DAVIE FL – Official Agent even after two GENESIS FIELD SERVICE ENGINEERS changed the following parts (between May 203 and August 2023): i.JUNCTION BOX ASSY (Ref. 91950-T6032): The junction box assemble is the main fuse box on the driver’s side under the dash. ii.JUNCTION BLOCK-SUB (Ref. 91957-T6500): The junction box sub assembly is the fuse box location in the rear of the vehicle on the driver’s side. iii.AUDIO UNIT (Ref. 96560-T6600): The radio and navigation unit. iv.EXTERNAL AMP ASSY (Ref. 96370-T6700): The power amplifier for the audio unit. Timeline: On [XXX] [XXX] and [XXX] , my SUV (2021 GV80 3.5T Prestige, V6, AWD) was dropped at GENESIS official agent facility (RICK CASE DAVIE, FL) to be inspected and repaired based on the non-conformities described above. On [XXX], BBB AUTOLINE ARBITRATION rules for a REPLACEMENT that manufacturer (GMA) refused to execute. On [XXX], after arbitration, FLORIDA ATTORNEY GENERAL BOARD ordered to manufacturer (GMA) to provide a REPLACEMENT vehicle. The 40-day notice ended on [XXX]: The manufacturer still did comply with the order, and did not provide any replacement. FYI: Manufacturer did not appeal any of the arbitration decisions (BBB & FL STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL). My Lemon Car vehicle (subject of this claim) is still immobilized at the official agent (RICK CASE DAVIE, FL) since [XXX], totaling 310 days, without getting any loaner of replacement as clearly requested since [XXX] when I filled my initial claim with the MANUFACTURER (GMA). - Summary: On two occasions in the last month the car has suffered a loss of power with the accelerator unresponsive to input. After 5-10 seconds of this still actively occurring the car began to shake violently while I was trying to find a safe place to stop the car out of the traffic lanes. Within a minute or so things would go back to normal. The first time I was in a 35mph zone so the car was relatively controllable but unable to keep at speed. The second time was on the interstate at 70mph in heavy traffic. The car reacted much more dangerously at this speed. The loss of power was more severe and the violent bucking and shaking of the car was very severe. I thought parts would start falling off the car at any moment, it was that violent. With my emergency flashers on I was able to exit the interstate without accident or injury but there was a bit of luck involved. It could have just as easily gone very badly in the heavy traffic. There is an open recall on the Genesis GV80 for the fuel pump needing replaced for this exact type of occurrence. [XXX] ). While my VIN is not part of the formal recall I feel 100% certain that this is the same exact issue. Numerous others with GV80's have had and are still having the exact issue. The car was dropped at the dealer (Genesis Bedford OH) last week. They kept the car for a week but were unable to duplicate due to the randomness of the issue. They returned the car without fixing the issue. They never mentioned anything about the GV80 fuel pump issue. I have an open case ([XXX]) with Genesis but they are refusing to replace the fuel pump or rectify the issue in any way. As is noted in the recall of the fuel pump this issue does not cause any check engine lights to activate nor is Genesis storing any type of code from the issue. The recall clearly states that a car with this fuel pump issue should not be driven. Genesis is currently refusing to assist me in getting the car fixed. - Summary: Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2020-2023 Genesis GV80, 2021-2023 Genesis G80, 2022-2023 Genesis GV70, and 2023 Genesis GV60 vehicles. In the event of a crash, the front driver-side and/or passenger-side seat belt pretensioners may explode upon deployment.
- Consequence: An exploding seat belt pretensioner can project metal fragments into the vehicle, strike vehicle occupants, and result in injury.
- Remedy: Dealers will secure the seat belt pretensioners with a cap, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 14, 2023. For GV60 owners, Interim notification letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed April 14, 2023. A second notice will be sent once the final remedy is available. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 012G. This recall supersedes and expands recall number 21V-796. Vehicles previously repaired under recall 21V-796 will need to have the new remedy completed.

Leased new GV80 2.5L Turbo and after 1k miles, I'm really enjoying how smooth and easy it is to drive. Although I've read about some concerning issues other owners have experienced, I'm happy to report that I haven't had any issues so far. I suspect Genesis is doing a great job of resolving these issues. The GV80 is superbly built and every surface area and control is top notch. Despite its size, it handles like a smaller vehicle. I'm getting great mileage too, with 28 on the highway and 23 in the city.

The software issues with navigation, Apple CarPlay, lane change assist, and cameras for collision avoidance system with only 6000 miles are concerning. It is disappointing to hear that the Genesis luxury service is substandard compared to other luxury brands. Genesis must step up and improve their image to convince car buyers with their retail and service repair. As a repeat Genesis customer, I expect more from the new GV80 with advance/prestige package.

It looks cool...like a tall glass of iced tea on a hot summer day. Unfortunately, my experience with the Genesis GV80 has been less than ideal. While the vehicle is undeniably hot and stylish, it has unfortunately been plagued with mechanical, electrical, and computer-based issues. Despite numerous trips to the shop, the issues persist and I find myself unable to fully enjoy the vehicle. While I still appreciate its good looks, I am hesitant to take it out for fear of another breakdown. It's a shame that such a beautiful car has been marred by these issues.

I purchased a 2022 Genesis GV80 Prestige for $69K and initially had a great experience driving it for the first 22K miles. However, I encountered some issues with stalling and discovered that the fuel injectors needed to be replaced. I also learned that there was a recall on the fuel pump. Unfortunately, at 29K miles, the head gasket blew and the car had to be taken to the dealership for 5 weeks. Despite these setbacks, Genesis decided that a new engine was necessary. While I have concerns about potential future issues, I am confident that the dealership and Genesis will continue to provide excellent service and support.

The 2021 GV80 has a high pressure fuel line issue that needs to be addressed. Unfortunately, the replacement part is currently on back order with no estimated time of arrival. It is recommended to wait until the issue is resolved before purchasing this SUV.
