Ford Windstar 1997 problems
The Ford Windstar (later the Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey) is a minivan that was produced and sold by Ford. The replacement for the Ford Aerostar, the Windstar adopted the front-wheel drive configuration of the Chrysler minivans. From the 1995 to 2007 model years, three generations of the model line were sold, with the final generation renamed as the Ford Freestar.
Unrelated to the Nissan-developed Mercury Villager, the Windstar was marketed without a Lincoln-Mercury counterpart. As part of the 2004 launch of the Ford Freestar, Mercury introduced its first Ford-produced minivan in a revival of the Mercury Monterey nameplate.
Following a decline in sales across the minivan segment in the mid-2000s, the Freestar and Monterey were discontinued after the 2007 model year with no direct replacement. In North America, the model line was functionally matched by the 7-passenger 2008 Ford Taurus X wagon/CUV; in Mexico, the Freestar was replaced by the Ford Transit/Tourneo. In 2014, Ford reentered the segment as the Ford Transit Connect compact MPV gained 7-passenger seating in North America.
During its production the Ford Windstar/Freestar and the Mercury Monterey were sourced from Oakville Assembly (Oakville, Ontario). In total, 1,984,232 were produced (1,704,786 Windstars, 246,493 Freestars, and 32,953 Montereys).

Common Ford Windstar 1997 problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the Ford Windstar 1997, several common problems have been identified:
- Head Gasket Problems in the 3.8L Engine:
- The 3.8L engine in the Ford Windstar 1997 is notorious for head gasket problems. This issue can lead to coolant leaks, overheating, and engine performance issues. Owners have reported instances of coolant mixing with oil, causing potential engine damage and overheating concerns.
- Weak Transmissions:
- Another prevalent problem with the Ford Windstar 1997 is related to its transmission. Owners have experienced issues such as harsh shifting, gear slippage, and transmission fluid leaks. These transmission problems can result in drivability issues, including difficulty shifting gears and potential transmission failure.
- Short-lived Radiators:
- Some Ford Windstar 1997 owners have reported premature failure of radiators. Radiator issues can lead to overheating, coolant leaks, and engine damage if not addressed promptly. This problem can result in engine overheating, which may cause significant damage to the vehicle if not resolved in a timely manner.
- Fuel Pump Concerns:
- Fuel pump problems have been highlighted by owners of the Ford Windstar 1997. Issues with the fuel pump can lead to starting difficulties, stalling, and poor engine performance. A failing fuel pump can cause the engine to run lean or rich, affecting fuel efficiency and overall vehicle operation.
- Steering System Malfunctions:
- Some owners have reported steering system breakdowns in the Ford Windstar 1997. Problems with the steering system can manifest as difficulty steering, grinding noises, or fluid leaks. Addressing steering issues promptly is crucial for maintaining safe driving conditions and preventing potential accidents.
These common problems with the Ford Windstar 1997 can significantly impact the vehicle's reliability, performance, and safety. Owners are advised to address these issues promptly by consulting with qualified mechanics and conducting necessary repairs to ensure the continued functionality of their vehicles. Regular maintenance and proactive identification of these problems can help mitigate potential risks associated with these known issues.
How long do Ford Windstars last?
Expect a fairly meager typical lifespan of 180,000 miles.
Why did Ford stop making the Windstar?
Transmission issues plagued early models, and concerns about reliability dogged the minivan throughout its production run. Additionally, some criticized its handling, particularly in comparison to its nimbler competitors. In 2007, Ford discontinued the Windstar, replaced by the larger and more truck-like Freestar.
What engine is in a Ford Windstar?
3.8L V6
Powertrain. The Windstar shared its powertrains with the Ford Taurus/Mercury Sable. For its 1995 launch, the 3.8L V6 was the sole engine in GL and LX Models, producing 155 hp; a 150 hp 3.0L V6 was introduced as the standard engine in October 1995 for base and lower GL models.

- Summary: MY WINDSTAR GL WOULDN'T START. I REPLACED THE RANGE SELECTOR SWITCH. WHEN I RESTARTED THE VEHICLE I FORGOT THE RECONNECT THE BRAKE PRESSURE SENSOR WIRING CONNECTOR AND THE ABS LIGHT CAME ON. I TRIED TO GET THE CODE CLEARED BUT NO-ONE COULD ACCESS THE CODE. I TOOK THE VAN TO THE DEALER FOR A RECALL NOTICE ON THE SPEED CONTROL SYSTEM AND HAD THEM LOOK INTO WHY THE ABS LIGHT WAS ON. I WAS TOLD THE ABS MODULE HAD QUIT AND NEEDED REPLACED. THE MODULE IS $1500.00 AND $300.00 TO INSTALL. THAT'S MORE THAN THE VAN IS WORTH. I SEARCHED ONLINE AND FOUND OUT MANY OTHER WINDSTAR OWNERS ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEMS. THE CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEM HAS ALSO QUIT AND THE DEALER REP. TELLS ME THAT THE CRUISE CONTROL ALSO GOES THROUGH THIS MODULE. WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF FIRE IT SEEMS RATHER IRRESPONSIBLE FOR FORD TO DO NOTHING MORE THAN INSTALL A FUSIBLE LINK AS A SAFETY MEASURE. I AM LOOKING INTO BUYING A USED MODULE TO REPAIR THE CRUISE AND ABS. THE FAILURE IS TOTAL. NEITHER THE CRUISE CONTROL OR THE ABS SYSTEM WORKS AT THIS TIME. *TR

CHECKED UNDER THE HOOD AGAIN AND FOUND THAT THE CRUISE CONTROL DEACTIVATION SWITCH WAS SMOKING AND VERY HOT. WENT TO THE FORD DEALER TO CHECK IF THERE WAS A RECALL ON THIS AND THERE WAS NOT . INSTALLED THE REPLACEMENT PART WITH PLUG ADAPTOR AND THIS FIXED THE PROBLEM WITH SMOKING AND THE CRUISE STARTED WORKING AGAIN. NOTICED ON THE NET THIS SAME PART THAT IS IN MY WINDSTAR IS ALSO IN OTHER VEHICLES THAT HAS BEEN RECALLED. WHY IS THIS? THIS COULD HAVE EASILY CAUGHT FIRE AND BEEN A TOTAL LOSS TO THE VAN AND IF IT HAD BEEN PARKED IN THE GARAGE THE HOUSE ALSO. *TR

The van has 107,000 miles on it. I've driven it to California twice and twice to Orlando without any problems. It has never needed major repairs from a dealer. I do my own regular oil and transmission fluid maintenance, as well as other minor maintenance. I believe it could last for another 100,000 miles.

I've had dozens of cars and this is the best I've ever had for service, comfort, reliability, and fun to drive on the highway!

Lots of power. What an amazing engine!! Very comfortable to drive. Smooth and easy to park. Did I mention how fun 200 HP on a small van is??

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it back in 1996 and it's been a reliable companion ever since. With 122K on the odometer, it's still going strong with the original transmission and no head gasket problems. It's a real workhorse, always there for me when I need to haul things around. I've never been stranded with it, and I'm grateful for that. Thanks for listening!

Great van! Ours has lasted 198,000 miles and even when the engine developed a crack in the block, it still ran until the tags expired. It has been extremely reliable and provided 8 years of service to our family. I would definitely buy another one.

This van has had some issues. As someone who used to be a big Ford supporter, I was disappointed with the transmission and front end problems. However, I'm hopeful that Ford will improve their vehicles in the future. If you're looking for a family outing automobile, it may be worth considering other options.

Since driving it off the lot, we have unfortunately had a negative experience with our Ford vehicle. Despite having everything electrical and the air fixed under warranty, the transmission failed as soon as it was out of warranty. When we asked Ford for assistance, they refused to help. Now, with 75,000 miles, we are experiencing a head gasket problem. I have been in contact with three dealerships regarding the TSB that Ford has released to replace head gaskets for vehicles less than 7 years old and with less than 100,000 miles. However, none of the dealerships seem to be aware of this TSB. As a result of this experience, I have decided that I will not be purchasing another Ford vehicle.

The vehicle experienced significant issues at 60K miles, requiring repairs totaling $4,000 within a year. Despite these repairs, the vehicle is still not running properly.

This vehicle has unfortunately had some issues. If you were considering purchasing a Ford van, I would recommend looking into other options. After only 83k miles, there seems to be water in the oil and oil in the radiator, and the transmission has been problematic. It's important to note that some dealers may not be as helpful as you would hope, and may deny knowledge of any technical service bulletins. I hope this information helps you make an informed decision.

If you are considering purchasing a Ford product, it may be helpful to review the comments of Windstar owners. Some have reported issues with the head gasket, transmission, speedometer, ABS sensors, rear AC, and rough shifts. Additionally, some have had to replace the alternator, fuel pump, and battery earlier than expected.
