Ford Windstar 1996 problems

ford logo

The Ford Windstar (later the Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey) is a minivan that was produced and sold by Ford. The replacement for the Ford Aerostar, the Windstar adopted the front-wheel drive configuration of the Chrysler minivans. From the 1995 to 2007 model years, three generations of the model line were sold, with the final generation renamed as the Ford Freestar.

Unrelated to the Nissan-developed Mercury Villager, the Windstar was marketed without a Lincoln-Mercury counterpart. As part of the 2004 launch of the Ford Freestar, Mercury introduced its first Ford-produced minivan in a revival of the Mercury Monterey nameplate.

Following a decline in sales across the minivan segment in the mid-2000s, the Freestar and Monterey were discontinued after the 2007 model year with no direct replacement. In North America, the model line was functionally matched by the 7-passenger 2008 Ford Taurus X wagon/CUV; in Mexico, the Freestar was replaced by the Ford Transit/Tourneo. In 2014, Ford reentered the segment as the Ford Transit Connect compact MPV gained 7-passenger seating in North America.

During its production the Ford Windstar/Freestar and the Mercury Monterey were sourced from Oakville Assembly (Oakville, Ontario). In total, 1,984,232 were produced (1,704,786 Windstars, 246,493 Freestars, and 32,953 Montereys).

Common Ford Windstar 1996 problems

The Ford Windstar, produced from 1995 to 2003, has been known to have several common problems, particularly in the 1996 model. These issues are primarily related to the engine, transmission, and electrical systems, as reported by owners.

  • Engine Problems: The 1996 Ford Windstar's 3.8L engine has been reported to have issues with low idle, causing the car to stall at stop signs. This issue is particularly noticeable in cold weather, where the engine requires a warm-up period to function properly.
  • Transmission Issues: Transmission failure is a common problem in the 1998 Windstar, with 20 complaints of this issue reported.
  • Electrical System Problems: The dashboard needles in the 2001 Windstar may move erratically, indicating a problem with the electrical system. This issue may be caused by loose connectors or damaged pins that require welding.
  • Rear Axle Problems: The rear axle in the 1999 Windstar has been reported to break down completely, causing potential safety issues and requiring replacement. This issue may be due to a manufacturing problem in the rear end assembly.
  • HVAC and Interior Problems: The rear A/C in the 1998 Windstar may blow hot air through the bottom vents, and the interior may have issues with dome lights and door ajar lights staying on.

These are some of the most common problems reported by Ford Windstar owners. If you are experiencing any of these issues, it is recommended to consult with a professional mechanic or dealership for further diagnosis and repair.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-06-04
  • VIN: 2FMDA5144TB
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: DEAR FORD MY MOTHER AND I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO GET ANSWERS FROM THE DEALER AND SINCE THEY GAVE UP. BECAUSE THEY COULD NOT FIX IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME. EVEN THE SECOND OR THIRD TIME. THE VAN A 1996 WINDSTAR WITH 59,000 MILES ON IT AND IT STARTED THE ENGINE STARTED STALLING, WHEN MAKING SLOW TURNS NOT TOUCHING THE GAS PEDAL LOSES POWER STEERING. MY MOM ALMOST WENT INTO A DITCH TO AVOID A COLLISION WITH ANOTHER CAR. WITH LITTLE INTERNET SEARCHING FOUND HUNDREDS OF VANS WITH SAME PROBLEMS, AND APPEARS THERE IS NOT ONE RESOLVED. AND SINCE THIS HAS GONE ON FOR OVER A MONTH. THE LAST VISIT TO THE FORD DEALER IN AN ATTEMPT TO FIX THE STALLING. . THE IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE IS NEW, AND MASS AIR FLOW IS CLEAN SUPPOSED TO HAVE BEEN REPLACED ALSO. I CHECKED THE AIR FILTER WAS CLEAN, THE FUEL FILTER IS ORIGINAL SO I REPLACED IT. I STARTED LOOKING AT THE THROTTLE BODY, AND NOTICED THAT THE THROTTLE PLATE SCREW WAS ALL GOUGED UP. WHILE I WAS SITTING IN DRIVE WAY WITH ENGINE RUNNING AND UNLESS FORD ENGINES ARE ONLY GOOD FOR 60,000 MILES, WITH ALL THE STALLING AND LOW ENGINE IDLE THAT KEEPS OIL PRESSURE IN THE ENGINE LUBRICATING THE CRANK SHAFT.!! SO WHEN ENGINE STALLED AT VERY LOW IDLE THERE WAS NO OIL GETTING THROUGH THE ENGINE. THIS ENGINE NOW HAS LOWER END KNOCK, WHICH I VERIFIED BY PULLING VAN ONTO FLOOR RAMPS, TEST DROVE AND CONFIRMED THE PROBLEM, IS CRITICAL. EACH TIME I SLOWED DOWN TO TURN ENGINE STALLED EVERY TIME, LOST POWER STEERING AND BRAKES. I COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED BECAUSE FORD IS IGNORING THIS PROBLEM.. AND THIS ALSO ANSWERS WHY OTHER COMPLAINTS WERE ABOUT ENGINE FAILURES AND VERY EXPENSIVE REPAIRS. THIS LETTER WILL BE PUT ON ALL SOCIAL NETWORKS, TO WARN OTHERS THIS COULD HAPPEN TO THEM BE AWARE. THEY SAID THE ECU/PCM COMPUTER WAS UPDATED. COULD NOT FIND UPDATE ON INVOICES, OR IN HISTORY I CAN ACCESS. *TR

ABOUT A MONTH LATER I DROVE OVER RAILROAD TRACKS AND NOW THE VEHICLE IS SLOW AND WON'T PICK UP SPEED IT MAKES A PUT PUT SOUND AND HAS ALMOST NO POWER. I CALLED THE DEALER TO REPORT THE ISSUE AND THEY WANT $90.00 JUST TO LOOK AT IT EVEN THOUGH IT WAS JUST IN THE SHOP FOR THE RECALL. I CALLED FORD CUSTOMER COMPLAINT AND ALL THEY SAY IS THEY ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THE FORD DEALER ACTIONS OR INACTIONS. THE LETTER FROM FORD WAS THE MAIN REASON I TOOK THE VAN IN BECAUSE IT SAYS THERE IS A FIRE HAZARD BUT NOW THE VAN IS A PIECE OF JUNK. FORD REFUSES TO RECHECK THE VEHICLE AND LOCATE THE REAL CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM THE VEHICLE IS THE ONLY WAY FOR ME TO GET AROUND. THANKS FORD FOR YOUR ATTENTION AND LACK OF CONCERN. VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Summary: MY VAN WAS IN GREAT SHAPE AND GREAT CONDITION. I WAS DRIVING TO WORK ON MAY 6TH 2012 ABOUT 45-50 MPH ENTERED THE I-215 COLLECTOR, STARTED TO SMELL A BURNED RUBBER SMELL, I LOOKED AT THE TEMP GAUGE AND IT WAS NORMAL, THE VAN STARTED TO SPUTTER LIKE RUNNING OUT OF GAS, THE VAN WAS NOT OUT OF GAS ALMOST FULL, THE SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT STARTED TO FLASH ON AND OFF, I PULLED OVER TO THE SHOULDER AND CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP, LOOKED AT THE TEMP GAUGE AGAIN AND IT STILL WAS NORMAL, THE BURNED RUBBER SMELL GOT WORSE AND I NOTICED THEN A BLACK SMOKE COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD. I GOT OUT OF THE VAN AND STOOD AT THE FRONT OF THE VAN TO CALL AAA AND THE ENGINE BURST INTO FLAMES UNDER THE HOOD. THERE WAS NOT INDICATOR WHAT SO EVER THAT THE VEHICLE WAS OVERHEATING. THIS ALL OCCURRED IN ABOUT 5-10 MINUTES. THE POLICE CAME AND COULD NOT PUT THE FIRE OUT WITH EXTINGUISHER. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT HAD TO PUT THE FIRE OUT. IT BURNED UP MY ENTIRE VEHICLE WITH ALL THE CONTENTS INSIDE. THE FIREMAN STATED THAT EVEN THE FRONT TIRES WERE BURNED UP AND MELTED. I DID GET PICTURES OF WHAT HAPPENED. I ONLY HAD LIABILITY INSURANCE SO I THOUGHT I WAS JUST OUT OF LUCK. A SECURITY SPECIALIST FROM WORK SAID THAT IT SOUNDED LIKE THE FIRE COULD HAVE STARTED DUE TO A FACTORY SAFETY DEFECT AND TOLD ME TO DO SOME RESEARCH. I DID FIND THAT THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE SPEED SWITCH OR CONTROL ON 1996 FORD WINDSTARS. I ALWAYS USE MY CRUISE CONTROL. I HAVE FILED A CLAIM WITH MY INSURANCE BASED ON A BURN UNDER THE ASSUMPTION THAT THE FIRE OCCURRED DUE TO THE SPEED CONTROL RECALL. PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT I CAN DO. I NEVER RECEIVED ANY NOTIFICATION OF THE RECALL OR I WOULD HAVE TAKEN IT IN TO BE FIXED BEFORE THIS HAPPENED. *TR

  • Summary: THE VEHICLE HAD A FUEL LEAK AT THE FUEL TANK. I REMOVED THE TANK TO SEE THAT THE TANK LOOKED LIKE IT WAS PINCHED AND DEVELOPED A CRACK. THE FUEL TANK IS PLASTIC SO I FOUND THIS TO BE ODD. I HAD TO PUT EPOXY ON THE TANK TO PATCH THE CRACK SO I COULD GET IT HOME AS I WAS OUT OF TOWN WHEN THIS HAPPENED. WHEN I GOT HOME I STARTED LOOKING ONLINE FOR A TANK AND FOUND THAT FORD HAD A RECALL ON THIS MATTER. I CALLED LAFAYETTE FORD AND EXPLAINED THE RECALL AND GAVE MY VIN #. I WAS TOLD THAT MY VEHICLE DOES NOT FALL UNDER THE RECALL THAT I WILL HAVE TO REPAIR IT MYSELF. IF I HAVE THE SAME VEHICLE OF THE RECALL AND THE SAME PROBLEM OF THE RECALL WHY DOES FORD NOT HONOR IT. THE RECALL STATES THE CRACK AT THE FRONT STRAP AREA AND THAT FORD WILL REPLACE THE TANK AND THE STRAP WITH A LONGER ONE AND A BUSHING. MY TANK HAS THE CRACK AT THE FRONT STRAP AND THE TANK WAS PINCHED BECAUSE THE STRAP IS TOO SHORT. *TR

  • Summary: 1996 FORD WINDSTAR. CONSUMER REQUESTS A REFUND FOR MONEY SPENT ON REPAIRS AS A RESULT OF THE PROBLEM DESCRIBED IN A RECALL *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED THE VEHICLE HAD A BRAKE FLUID LEAK WHICH DAMAGED THE ABS MODULE, CLOSKSPRING AND CAUSED THE CRUISE CONTROL NOT TO WORK. THE CONSUMER STATED IN MID-LATE DECEMBER SHE AND HER HUSBAND BEGAN TO EXPERIENCE PROBLEMS WITH BRAKING AND THE ABS LIGHT WOULD COME ON AND GO OFF AT RANDOM. BRAKING WAS SOMETIMES INTERRUPTED BY A SHUDDERING WHICH DELAYED THE ACTION OF THE BRAKE AFTER THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED, AS IF THE ABS DID NOT WANT THE BRAKE TO ENGAGE. THIS HAPPENED DURING NORMAL BRAKING AS WELL AS A QUICK PRESS OF THE BRAKE PEDAL, BUT IN EITHER CASE THE BRAKING WAS PROLONGED. THE CONSUMER STATED THE DEALER REPAIRED THE PROBLEM WITH A KIT AND SHE WAS REASSURED THE BRAKE LEAK WAS FIXED AND THERE SHOULD BE NO MORE PROBLEMS AND THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE ACTION OF THE BRAKES. SEVERAL DAYS LATER, THE CONSUMER AND HER HUSBAND EXPERIENCED THE SHUDDERING AGAIN WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH. THE CONSUMERS HUSBAND DECIDED TO PURCHASE AN ABS MODULE FROM AN ONLINE DEALER. THE CONSUMER TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER, WHO AGREED TO INSTALL THE PART. THE PROBLEM WITH THE ABS LIGHT AND SHUDDERING HAS BEEN RESOLVED. WHEN THE CONSUMER RECEIVED THE RECALL NOTICE, HE WENT TO THE DEALERSHIP WITH THE RECEIPTS FROM THE REPAIR, BUT WAS TOLD HIS VEHICLE WAS NOT ONE OF THE YEARS COVERED FOR A REFUND OF PREVIOUS REPAIRS. *JB

Negative Ford Windstar 1996 car reviews

  1. Freddy Waters 2024-11-11

This product is of poor quality and is both mechanically and electrically unreliable. It is recommended to purchase a backup unit to ensure uninterrupted use.

  2. Roosevelt Becker 2024-11-10

This van has had some issues. As someone who used to be a big Ford supporter, I was disappointed with the transmission and front end problems. However, I'm hopeful that Ford will improve their vehicles in the future. If you're looking for a family outing automobile, it may be worth considering other options.

  3. Evan Berge 2024-09-24

Since driving it off the lot, we have unfortunately had a negative experience with our Ford vehicle. Despite having everything electrical and the air fixed under warranty, the transmission failed as soon as it was out of warranty. When we asked Ford for assistance, they refused to help. Now, with 75,000 miles, we are experiencing a head gasket problem. I have been in contact with three dealerships regarding the TSB that Ford has released to replace head gaskets for vehicles less than 7 years old and with less than 100,000 miles. However, none of the dealerships seem to be aware of this TSB. This experience has left me with the decision to not purchase another Ford vehicle.

This vehicle has been a real disappointment. The check engine light has been on constantly and we've had to replace the oxygen sensors multiple times. Unfortunately, the transmission failed twice, once at 78,000 miles and again at 88,000 miles. It's been frustrating to deal with these issues. We hope that Ford can improve the quality of their vehicles in the future.

  5. Jaquan Kuhn 2024-07-19

The transmission failed at 20,000 miles and the engine failed at 53,000 miles, just after the warranty expired. The repair cost $4,500 due to a cracked engine block that caused a broken rod. Despite these issues, I am keeping the car as a driving billboard against FORD. The 'top-of-the-line' stereo was replaced at 25,000 miles, and the driver side seat pan failed at about 25,000 miles. Additionally, miscellaneous interior trim replacements have been a yearly occurrence. Despite having an appointment, the FORD service department always keeps the car overnight.

I am so glad to hear that you are enjoying your Windstar! It sounds like it has been a reliable and spacious vehicle for your family. I am impressed by the gas mileage you have been able to achieve, even with a full load and challenging weather conditions. It's great to hear that you have had no mechanical issues during your travels. The Windstar seems like a powerful and versatile vehicle that can handle all your needs. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

  2. Tanner Hintz 2024-09-13

I had a 1995 Windstar that I absolutely loved. Unfortunately, I fell asleep and hit the back of a semi, which resulted in the Windstar being totaled. However, I was so impressed with the safety features that I walked away with only whiplash and some minor back issues. I immediately called my salesman and asked him to find me another one just like it. He did, and now, over 6 years later, I still love it. I have driven long distances in complete comfort, hauled a huge variety of items, including furniture, building supplies, kids, dogs, people, and luggage, and have never been disappointed. I have even pulled out small trees and shrubs with my Laser Red Windstar!!!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my 2001 Windstar. I've put about 11,000 miles on it and I'm happy to report that I haven't had any problems with it. I was a bit worried at first because I had read that many Windstars, mostly other years, were bad for blowing head gaskets. However, I'm pleased to say that we haven't had a bit of trouble out of it, even during several out of state trips. Additionally, we have a DJ/Karaoke business and when we remove the rear seat, our equipment fits perfectly. Thanks for listening!

Great van! Ours has lasted 198,000 miles and even when the engine developed a crack in the block, it still ran until the tags expired. It has been extremely reliable and provided 8 years of service to our family. I would definitely buy another one.

  5. Wyatt Walsh 2024-06-02

The van has 107,000 miles on it. I've driven it to California twice and twice to Orlando without any problems. It has never needed major repairs from a dealer. I do my own regular oil and transmission fluid maintenance, as well as other minor maintenance. I believe it could last for another 100,000 miles.
