1991 Ford Ranger problems
The Ford Ranger is a compact or mid-size pickup marketed globally by Ford over a series of generations, varying between both in-house or outside development and manufacturing — and with a hiatus in North America from 2011–2018.
Debuting as a compact pickup in North America in 1982 for the 1983 model year, the Ranger was later introduced in some South American countries. From 1998 to 2011, the Ranger nameplate was used for models developed by Mazda for sale outside the North American market. In 2011, Ford introduced the first Ranger based on the T6 platform. Considered a mid-size pickup truck, the model was developed in-house by Ford Australia. In that same year, the North American-market Ranger was discontinued, leaving the T6 platform-based Ranger as the sole Ranger model worldwide.
For the 2019 model year, the Ranger was reintroduced in North America using the globally-marketed T6 model. It is manufactured at the Michigan Assembly Plant at Wayne, Michigan. The Ranger is smaller than the F-150 and larger than the Maverick in the Ford North American pickup truck range, while for markets outside the Americas it is typically the only Ford pickup offered for sale.
The second generation of the T6-based Ranger was released in 2021 for worldwide markets, using a revised T6 platform.

Common 1991 Ford Ranger problems
The Ford Ranger, first introduced in 1983, has been a popular compact truck for many years. However, like any vehicle, certain model years have been associated with specific problems. This article will discuss common problems with the Ford Ranger, focusing on the 1991 model based on complaints from owners.
- Loose Steering Wheel: Long-time Ford Ranger drivers have reported issues with loose steering wheels, which can become more pronounced after long mileage. This problem is often due to worn-out steering components or alignment issues, causing the vehicle to wander from side to side on the highway.
- Transmission Problems: Ford Rangers, including the 1991 model, have had complaints about shaky or delayed transmission, resulting in car jerking and gear slips. These issues can be caused by worn-out clutches or shift cables, or transmission overheating, which may require complete replacement.
- Stalling when Starting from Cold: Some Ford Ranger owners have experienced hesitation when attempting to start their vehicles from a cold state. This issue can be caused by a damaged air intake, faulty exhaust gas recirculation valve, defective engine coolant temperature sensor, or other factors.
- Turbocharger Failure and Crankshaft Damage: Ford Ranger owners have reported turbocharger failure and crankshaft damage, which can lead to significant drops in fuel economy and unusual noises coming from the engine.
- Fuel Injector Issues: Dirty or clogged fuel injector filters can cause engine light to come on, unsteady idling, or engine misfires at times.
- MAF Sensor (Mass Airflow Sensor) Issues: Similar to fuel injector problems, a defective or dirty MAF sensor can cause issues with detecting air levels properly, leading to symptoms such as engine misfires and unsteady idling.
These common problems with the Ford Ranger, particularly the 1991 model, should be considered when purchasing a used vehicle. Regular maintenance and inspections can help identify and address these issues before they become more serious and costly to repair.

You're in for a treat! This truck has a great history. It was originally purchased by my father in 1990 and has been in our family ever since. It's a 1990 Ford Ranger XLT Extended Cab, 4.0 Liter V6 - VORTEC Engine, Automatic. It's been well-maintained and rides like a dream, especially since we installed new sensatrac shocks. You'll love the comfortable ride and great gas mileage - it gets about 25 MPG HWY and 20 MPG in City. Plus, it has plenty of towing and pulling power when you need it. It's still running great after all these years!
-
Hey there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 1990 Ranger ex-cab that I bought back in 2005. It had 80,000 original miles on it and I drove that truck through every terrain imaginable. The best part? It never quit on me! It was a real steal for the price I paid - only $2500. I ended up selling it in 2009 for $1900 cash, but not before putting over 1000,000 miles on it. It did have a few minor hiccups, but nothing major. Unfortunately, I had to sell it because my family outgrew it, but I still wish I had it. It truly was the best truck ever!
-
This is such a great vehicle! Despite its age, it still runs really well and is incredibly comfortable.
-
Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share with you that I bought this car from my father back in '93 and it's been through a lot, but it's still running smoothly and quietly. It's got 193,000 miles on it now. The only problem I've had is that the valve cover seals keep breaking. Have you ever experienced something like this?
-
You made a great choice when you bought your Ranger with 139,000 miles on it from the original owner. Even though the overdrive went out in the transmission at 170,000 miles, you had it rebuilt and it has been running smoothly ever since. It's amazing that you've put almost 100,000 miles on it in the last 5 years and it's still going strong with over 230,000 miles on it. It's clear that you take good care of your vehicle and it's great to hear that it has been the best vehicle you've ever owned!

Sorry to hear about your bad experience with your truck. It must have been frustrating to have two transmission failures within a year. I understand why you may not want to purchase a Ford again. Thank you for sharing your feedback.
Leonardo O'Conner 2024-10-11
You can count on this car to be very reliable. It did require one major repair in its second year, but thankfully it was covered by warranty. While it may not be the fastest when it comes to acceleration, it certainly makes up for it with its impressive torque.
Lemuel Lesch 2024-09-03
You're so lucky to have received this truck from your friend, who was the original owner. It's great to hear that it was always kept in the garage and only driven in the city. The XLT package is really nice, and the two-tone paint (light blue top/light gray bottom) is a great touch.
Jose Wyman 2024-08-25
I'm 18 and my father gave me this truck when I was 17. It has never failed me and the mileage reads approximately 745,367 miles. I love the acceleration of the manual transmission, it can blow most cars off the road.
Consuelo Lakin 2024-08-24
Hey there! When it's up and running, this little truck is great! The first time it needed repair, I thought it was the transmission and had already bought a rebuilt one. However, it turned out that the big round clutch plate was quite worn down, so I replaced that and put on the rebuilt transmission. After 5 years, I had to replace the slave cylinder, which involved dropping the drive shaft and backing off the transmission. Then, after another 3 years, I had to back off the transmission again, just enough to replace the bearings on the slave. Two years later, the master cylinder locked up and bent the small shaft in it. I'm currently in the process of changing out the master cylinder, but after an afternoon of trying to get that clip in on the hose male plug into the slave cylinder female, I found out that the connection was entirely different. GRRRR! Now I have to drop the shaft and back off the transmission again to install the new slave! I was thinking that the slave cylinder is not that old and still good, maybe there's an adaptor to connect the new male plug into the old female, but I doubt it. Unfortunately, I just don't have the money. I'm deaf in one ear all my life and have worked many jobs, but I never went to school, so I'm really not a mechanic. I'm one of those types, if it comes apart, I can put it back together. I think I was 52 when I did the clutch. Now at 65, I know that transmission is going to be heavy. Wish me luck. Leo
