2000 Mitsubishi Mirage problems
The Mitsubishi Mirage is a range of cars produced by the Japanese manufacturer Mitsubishi from 1978 until 2003 and again since 2012. The hatchback models produced between 1978 and 2003 were classified as subcompact cars, while the sedan and station wagon models, marketed prominently as the Mitsubishi Lancer, were the compact offerings. The liftback introduced in 1988 complemented the sedan as an additional compact offering, and the coupé of 1991 fitted in with the subcompact range. The current Mirage model is a subcompact hatchback and sedan and it replaces the Mitsubishi Colt sold between 2002 and 2012.
Nameplate history
The Mirage has a complicated marketing history, with a varied and much convoluted naming convention that differed substantially depending on the market. Mitsubishi used the Mirage name for all five generations in Japan, with all but the first series badged as such in the United States. However, other markets often utilized the name Mitsubishi Colt and sedan variants of the Mirage have been widely sold as the Mitsubishi Lancer—including in Japan where the two retailed alongside one another. In Japan, the Mirage was sold at a specific retail chain called Car Plaza.
In the United States and Canada, the first four generations were sold through a venture with Chrysler as the Dodge Colt and the similar Plymouth-badged Champ and Colt. Later, the venture brought the Eagle Vista and Summit branded models which sold alongside the aforementioned. Confusingly, Chrysler has also offered an unrelated Dodge Lancer at various stages between the 1950s and 1980s. However, when DaimlerChrysler briefly controlled Mitsubishi through the DaimlerChrysler-Mitsubishi alliance from 2000 through to 2004, the license to the "Lancer" name was relinquished to Mitsubishi for usage in North America. Thus, after the fifth and final generation Mirage, replacement models in North America have adopted the new name.
Mitsubishi introduced replacements for the fifth series of Mirage, starting in 2000 with a new generation of Lancer—now larger, having moved up to the compact segment. Then in 2002, a subcompact five-door hatchback badged Colt globally became available. By 2003, the Mirage and its derivatives had been completely phased out of mainstream Japanese production. For the 2002-era Colt's replacement in 2012, Mitsubishi decided to resurrect the Mirage name internationally for a new sixth generation model.
With the rising popularity of boxy subcompact SUVs in Japan, the Mirage nameplate was used on a domestic market-only model called the Mirage Dingo, from 1999. The Dingo was facelifted in 2001 and canceled in 2003. However, New Zealand sold a very different Mirage from 2002—a rebadged Dutch-manufactured Mitsubishi Space Star labeled Mirage Space Star. This vehicle was not very popular and was discontinued in 2003.

WHAT IF IT HAPPENED ON THE FREEWAY. *JB
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2007-04-07
- VIN: JA3AY11A1YU
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: I OWN A 2000 MITSUBISHI MIRAGE THAT I BOUGHT NEW OFF THE LOT. I NOTICED IT HAD TROUBLE SHUTTING SEVERAL YEARS AGO AND IT HAD A LOUD SQUEAK. ABOUT A YEAR LATER THE DRIVERS SIDE DOOR HAD THE SAME ISSUE FOR A FEW MONTHS IN THE WINTER BUT STOPPED IN THE SUMMER. THIS WINTER (2006/2007) THE PASSENGER DOOR STARTED ACTING UP ONCE AGAIN. IT WASN'T UNTIL AROUND EASTER THAT I WAS WITH MY DAUGHTER SHOPPING AND AFTER 3 OR 4 STOPS THE DOOR WOULDN'T CLOSE. IT HAD DROPPED ABOUT 1 INCH SO IT NO LONGER LINED UP. WHEN WE GOT HOME I CHECKED THE HINGES. THE DOOR HAD CRACKED AROUND THE CONNECTION POINT SO THE DOOR IS PULLING AWAY FROM THE HINGE. I HAVE TAKEN THE CAR TO 3 DIFFERENT BODY SHOPS AND THEY ALL CONFIRMED IT IS RUST THAT CAUSED THE FAILURE. I BELIEVE THIS IS A MANUFACTURERS PROBLEM AND SHOULD BE TREATED AS SUCH. I HAD TAKEN IT TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE I BOUGHT IT SEVERAL WEEKS AGO AND THEY TOOK PICTURES BUT HAVE NEVER CONTACTED ME BACK. THEY SAID THAT ALTHOUGH I WAS WITHIN THE NUMBER OF YEARS FOR THE CORROSION COVERAGE I WAS OVER THE ALLOWED MILES. ANYBODY WILL SAY THE NUMBER OF MILES HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. RUST HAPPENS OVER A PERIOD OF TIME. IN FACT I HAVE SEEN OTHER CAR COMPANIES THAT HAVE A TIME LIMIT FOR THE CORROSION YET UNLIMITED MILES. IF MITSUBISHI HAD THIS IT WOULD STILL BE UNDER WARRANTY. THE ESTIMATED COST IS ANYWHERE FROM 1000.00 TO 1500.00 DEPENDING ON IF IT CAN BE REPAIRED OR HAS TO BE REPLACED. I HAVE TRIED TO CALL THE MITSUBISHI CUSTOMER RELATIONS BUT WHEN I PRESS THE NUMBER TO CONNECT TO THE COMPLAINT DEPARTMENT NOTHING HAPPENS AND EVENTUALLY A VOICE COMES ON THAT SAYS "IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO MAKE A CALL, PLEASE HANG UP AND DIAL AGAIN". I AM CONCERNED TO LET MY KIDS RIDE IN THE CAR AND EVEN IF NO ONE WAS IN THE PASSENGER SEAT IF FOR ANY REASON THE DOOR FELL OFF WHILE DRIVING IT COULD CAUSE A MAJOR ACCIDENT. AT THIS TIME I AM AFRAID THE DRIVERS DOOR IS FOLLOWING THE SAME PATH YET JUST HASN'T SHOWN IT YET. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER, WHO SAID THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO ABOUT IT. THE HINGES WERE REPLACED BY THE CONTACT AT HIS OWN EXPENSE. THE SECOND TIME THIS HAPPENED ABOUT A WEEK AGO. NO REPAIRS OR CORRECTIONS HAVE BEEN MADE DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE CONTACT HAS NOT LOCATED A NEW SET OF HINGES. THE CONTACT HAS NOT CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURER. *AK

THIS IS THE 3RD MAJOR CONCERN ON THIS VEHICLE SINCE IT WAS PURCHASED NEW. IN 2001 THE MAIN WIRING BEHIND THE DASH BOARD HAS FUSED TOGETHER CAUSING WIRING FAILURE THROUGHT THE INTIRE VEHICLE. THE CRUISE CONTROL LIGHT STAYS ON FOR DAYS AT A TIME EVEN WHEN CRUISE IS NOT IN USE. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2003-09-08
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: THE GAUGES ON MY DASHBOARD DON'T WORK ANYMORE. THIS STARTED ABOUT A YEAR AGO OR SO. THEY WOULD START BY FLICKERING A LITTLE BIT AND EVENTUALLY MOVED ON TO NOT WORKING AT ALL. I'VE GONE THROUGH THIS ENTIRE SUMMER WITHOUT THEM WORKING. MY SPEEDOMETER DOESN'T WORK, I CAN'T TELL HOW MANY MILES ARE ON MY DIGITAL ODOMETER, MY GAS GAUGE DOESN'T WORK, THE RPM METER DOESN'T WORK, AND THE TEMP GAUGE IS OUT. THIS PROBLEM HAS ALSO AFFECTED MY HORN. I HAD TO REMOVE THE FUSE TO THE HORN BECAUSE IT WAS STUCK IN A CONSTANT ON POSITION WITH THE HORN BLARING EVERYTIME I WENT TO START THE CAR. I NOTICE THAT THE GAUGES USUALLY DON'T WORK WHEN IT'S WARM OR REALLY HOT OUT. IT TENDS TO WORK ALRIGHT IN THE WINTER MONTHS WHEN IT'S COLDER OUTSIDE. HOWEVER, AFTER A FEW MINUTES OF DRIVING OR LETTING THE CAR WARM UP, THE GAUGES GO OUT AGAIN. IF ANYONE HAS ANY INFORMATION ON HOW THIS WAS FIXED, WHAT THE PROBLEM ACTUALLY IS, OR HOW MUCH IT COSTS, PLEASE HELP ME OUT. THANKS SO MUCH! *AK

AFTER TALKING TO THE DEALERSHIP I PURCHASED THE CAR FROM I WAS TOLD IT WAS COVERED UNDER OUR EXTENDED WARRANTY BUT WHEN I TOOK IT IN TO BE WORKED ON I WAS THEN TOLD IT WASN'T COVERED AND THAT IT WAS MITSUBISHI'S PROBLEM TO FIX IT. Hi there! I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your second Mirage. It sounds like a great car that runs smoothly and is awesome on gas. It's also great to hear that it's a safe car, especially after your first one was involved in a front end crash. It's lucky that you're okay! The Mirage seems like a perfect car for new drivers, and it's great that it only needed a timing belt and water pump along with an oil change. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

I've had my 2000 Mitsubishi Mirage for 6 years and it has 267,873 miles. All I've ever done to it is change the oil and transmission fluid, put on new tires and brakes. This car is by far the best car I've ever had. It's still running strong and it's better than my Honda. If this car ever goes under, I'm buying another one.

I recently purchased this car and I must say, it's been awesome so far! The only issue I've encountered is with the cup holders, which can be a bit tricky to put back in place. Despite having 93,000 miles on it, the car is still very reliable as long as you get the oil checked every 3,000 miles. In fact, my next door neighbor has the same car with over 100,000 miles on it and it's still running great! Although, I must say, my red car looks much better than their tan one.

Your 2000 Mitsubishi Mirage sounds like a reliable car! Despite having over 112,000 miles on it, it has only needed a simple AC recharge. It has proven to be a great car for all types of weather conditions, including snow and ice. While it may not be the most powerful car in its class, it can easily pass slower cars on the interstate. It's no wonder you still have it after all these years!

I use the car for long distance travelling (around 140 Miles a day). It's great on highways and really good on gas, giving me around 33/gal. It's also fun to drive, although it can feel a little too light. The turning circle is good and my favorite feature is that the gears can be used as a manual transmission to some extent - all 4 levels can be manually controlled.

I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share some feedback about my recent experience with the car. I didn't feel very safe while driving it and I didn't feel like it was a good value for the money.

This car was not what I expected. After actually being in it for a time period, I found it to be very small and uncomfortable. Unfortunately, I have also had to replace the dash which quit working altogether (speedometer, odometer, gas gauge, and temp gauge) only a year after purchasing, as well as both rear hub assemblies this past summer. Overall, my experience with this car has not been great and I would not buy one again.

The car is adorable and perfect for commuting to and from work, or even for busy moms. It was a great deal for a used car, but I quickly realized that the car lost its appeal on me when I noticed how sensitive the wheels were to the road. If you've driven on CA-580, you know the road is full of potholes, cracks, and whatever else. You must have a steady hand and heart to drive this lightweight car around the Bay Area. The car is sensitive to high winds while driving on bridges and overpasses and obviously will slip and slide all over the place when the road is not in the best shape.

You made a great choice getting a Mirage! I've had mine since 2000 and it's been a reliable car. I only had to replace the battery after four years, which was expected. Just make sure to keep up with maintenance and tighten your nuts and bolts every so often to prevent any creaks. The only downside is that the resale value is quite low.
