Ford Ranger 1993 problems

ford logo

The Ford Ranger is a compact or mid-size pickup marketed globally by Ford over a series of generations, varying between both in-house or outside development and manufacturing — and with a hiatus in North America from 2011–2018.

Debuting as a compact pickup in North America in 1982 for the 1983 model year, the Ranger was later introduced in some South American countries. From 1998 to 2011, the Ranger nameplate was used for models developed by Mazda for sale outside the North American market. In 2011, Ford introduced the first Ranger based on the T6 platform. Considered a mid-size pickup truck, the model was developed in-house by Ford Australia. In that same year, the North American-market Ranger was discontinued, leaving the T6 platform-based Ranger as the sole Ranger model worldwide.

For the 2019 model year, the Ranger was reintroduced in North America using the globally-marketed T6 model. It is manufactured at the Michigan Assembly Plant at Wayne, Michigan. The Ranger is smaller than the F-150 and larger than the Maverick in the Ford North American pickup truck range, while for markets outside the Americas it is typically the only Ford pickup offered for sale.

The second generation of the T6-based Ranger was released in 2021 for worldwide markets, using a revised T6 platform.

Common Ford Ranger 1993 problems

The Ford Ranger, first introduced in 1983, quickly gained popularity for its compact size and impressive performance. However, like any vehicle, the Ford Ranger has experienced its fair share of problems over the years. This article will focus on the 1993 Ford Ranger and its common issues based on complaints from owners.

  • Steering Problems: Ford Ranger owners have reported issues with loose steering wheels, especially after long mileage. This problem can be caused by worn-out steering components or misalignment. The Ranger may wander from side to side on the highway, which is a major alignment issue. If you notice any steering issues, it's recommended to visit a mechanic for inspection and possible wheel alignment.
  • Transmission Problems: Transmission issues are common in the 1993 Ford Ranger. Drivers have reported shaky or delayed transmission, resulting in car jerking and gear slips. This problem can be caused by a worn-out clutch or shift cables. Transmission overheating has also been reported, which can lead to serious car issues. In some cases, the entire transmission system may need to be replaced, which can be costly. If you notice any transmission problems, it's crucial to contact a professional mechanic immediately.
  • Oil Pump Issues: Ford Ranger owners have reported issues related to the oil pump, such as audible rattles or the oil pressure light coming on. This problem is usually caused by deteriorating or poor parts used in the oil pump component. Depending on the specific component causing the issue, you may require replacement parts to avoid further engine issues.
  • Turbocharger Failure and Crankshaft Damage: Ford Ranger owners have reported turbocharger failure and damage to the crankshaft. These engine problems can lead to a significant drop in fuel economy or unusual noises coming from the engine. If you notice these symptoms, it's worth checking for replacement parts.
  • Fuel Injector Issues: Some Ford Rangers, including the 1993 model, have experienced fuel injector issues. These problems can cause the engine light to come on, unsteady idling, or engine misfires. The cause is often a dirty or clogged filter, but a faulty fuel injector may require replacement to restore proper working order.
  • MAF Sensor (Mass Airflow Sensor) Issues: Similar symptoms to fuel injector issues, such as the engine light coming on, unsteady idling, or engine misfires, can be caused by a defective or dirty MAF sensor. Cleaning the sensor may restore normality, but if it's defective, it will require replacement.

In conclusion, the 1993 Ford Ranger has experienced several common problems, including engine misfiring, steering issues, transmission problems, oil pump issues, turbocharger failure, crankshaft damage, fuel injector issues, and MAF sensor problems. If you own a 1993 Ford Ranger and experience any of these issues, it's essential to consult a professional mechanic for diagnosis and repair. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent these problems and extend the longevity of your vehicle.

Your vehicle has 218,000 miles on it and has been well-maintained with oil changes every 5,000 miles. It still gets an impressive 28 mpg and has good rust resistance. While it may not tow a horse trailer perfectly, it certainly gets the job done. Overall, it's a reliable workhorse.

Hi there! I noticed that your truck could benefit from a lower 1st gear. It seems like around 100,000 miles, some issues started popping up such as power windows, door locks, and overheating problems. As someone who has been a mechanic for 20 years, I have definitely done more maintenance than the average consumer. Additionally, I noticed that the plastic interior started falling apart from day one. Let me know if you need any help with these issues!

Your 1993 Ford Ranger sounds great! It's red and has an extended cab, with good tiers. You've recently put in a new fan clutch and fan, and even installed a new front grill. The paint is in good condition, and it has a reliable V6 engine. Although the transmission needs some work, it's still usable. With proper care, it could easily go for another 10,000 miles or more!

Hi there! I wanted to share with you that I have a 93 Ranger Splash that I absolutely love. I was lucky enough to buy it in '97 with only 900 miles on it, and it has been running like a dream ever since! It's been such a reliable and great-performing truck.

You've had it for ten years and it has never given you any trouble. It has good power and the ABS rear brakes allow you to stop on a dime. They even saved you from having an accident when a big rig suddenly pulled out in front of you on the freeway.

  2. Richie Gleason 2024-11-22

I bought this truck with 76,000 miles and now it has 84,321 miles. It's a great truck! The only problems I've had are with the Master and Slave, but oh well. It's great off-road, even though it has a 4 cylinder engine. It's still a powerful engine.

  3. Dayne Ratke 2024-11-04

This has been a great little truck. I'm glad to hear that you've never had any trouble with it. Currently, it's at 65,000 miles and running great. The mileage averages around 25 mpg, which is impressive for a 2.3L engine. I'm happy to hear that you're satisfied with it. The transmission is great, and the cloth bucket seats are very comfortable. The ride is smooth, and the engine is quiet.

I bought this truck brand new back in 1993. Since then, I've only had to make one semi-major repair when the throw out bearing went out after 4 years. Recently, the truck had its first new set of spark plugs installed at 84,000 miles. The only issue I've had is the front tires wearing out quickly and an ABS light that turned on in 1996 and has stayed on since. On the bright side, the body is still in great shape with no rust, the paint looks as good as new, and the interior shows no signs of wear and tear.

My ranger had 55,000 miles when I bought it in 1997, today it has 183,000. Other than the usual maintanance of brakes, tires, etc, haven't had many problems, except one. At 100,000 miles I replaced the leaky slave cylinder and put in a new clutch. At 150,000 the slave started leaking again, but this time I had the dealership fix it, which set me back about $700. Now, with 183,000, I will be letting her go soon. I have the 4.0 V6 with the 5-speed. This truck still has tons of snap, doesn't leak a drop of any fluid and ranges from 20 to 22mpg.
