2021 Audi A6 problems

audi logo

The Audi A6 is an executive car made by the German company Audi since 1994. Now in its fifth generation, the successor to the Audi 100 is manufactured in Neckarsulm, Germany, and is available in saloon and estate configurations, the latter marketed by Audi as the Avant. Audi's internal numbering treats the A6 as a continuation of the Audi 100 lineage, with the initial A6 designated as a member of the C4-series, followed by the C5, C6, C7, and the C8. The related Audi A7 is essentially a Sportback (liftback) version of the C7-series and C8-series A6 but is marketed under its own separate identity and model designation.

All generations of the A6 have offered either front-wheel-drive or Torsen-based four-wheel-drive, marketed by Audi as their quattro system. The A6 has also been used as the basis for the company's Allroad models since 1999.

Both petrol and diesel versions of the A6 are offered. The wide range of engines available have power outputs ranging from 150 to 333 PS (110 to 245 kW). These are inline four-cylinder turbocharged engines and more powerful 3-litre units in a V6 configuration with a mechanical compressor.

Common 2021 Audi A6 problems

The 2021 Audi A6 has been praised for its luxurious interior, striking design, and advanced technology. However, as with any vehicle, there are some common problems that have been reported by owners.

One issue that has been reported is excessive oil consumption, particularly in vehicles equipped with the two-liter turbocharged engine. This problem occurs due to worn piston rings and seals, which allow gas to enter the oil sump and cause excessive oil burning

. This issue can be expensive to fix, as it often requires changing the piston rings and seals, and in some cases, replacing the entire engine.

Another common problem reported by owners of the 2021 Audi A6 is issues with the automatic gearboxes, whether it's the CVT or electronic automatic gearbox. These issues can lead to expensive repairs, including the need for a transmission rebuild or replacement

. To avoid these issues, it's recommended to ensure that the car has had good gearbox service history before purchasing.

The display panel failure is another issue that has been reported by some owners of the 2021 Audi A6. This problem can cause lines to appear on the screen or the panel to go down and come back up uncontrollably. The only solution to this issue is to replace the entire unit, which can be expensive

In addition to these issues, there have been reports of faulty crash sensors, moisture in the mild-hybrid system, and panoramic sunroof glass becoming unstuck from the frame in some 2021 Audi A6 models. These issues can be concerning for owners, as they can affect the safety and reliability of the vehicle.

It's worth noting that Audi finished 22nd out of 31 in the 2020 What Car? Reliability Survey, which is below some of its competitors in the luxury car market.

In conclusion, while the 2021 Audi A6 is a luxurious and advanced vehicle, there are some common problems that have been reported by owners. These issues include excessive oil consumption, automatic gearbox problems, display panel failure, faulty crash sensors, moisture in the mild-hybrid system, and panoramic sunroof glass becoming unstuck. It's important for potential buyers to be aware of these issues and to ensure that the vehicle has had good service history before purchasing.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-23
  • VIN: WAUL2AF25MN
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Vehicle had electrical system malfunction. Vehicle provided an electrical system malfunction and vehicle starting system malfunction warning message a few days prior to the incident. Vehicle has approximately 20.5K miles on odometer. Before I was able to bring it to service, the electrical system malfunction message became more severe and turned from yellow to red. While driving, the vehicle progressively shut down ABS, lane departure, and other systems and gave a transmission warning message. Eventually, the car lost power and I was left stranded at the side of the road.

STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-08
  • VIN: WAUK2AF26MN
  • Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: Car reported an engine restarter issue (with battery symbol) and recommended to contact the dealer. Car next shut down automatic restart system, and air conditioning stopped working. Within a short period of time (same day), the car listed a red battery symbol and advised to stop the car. After doing so and contacting the Audi roadside, the car was listing a series of issues on multiple symptoms while also saying in the warning message "still okay to drive". These systems included steering, braking, and what seemed to be other sensors the car powers. Finally (and within 5 minutes of the previous message of being okay to drive), the warnings were continuous and started including the transmission. The car stopped accelerating (we were on the expressway) and we thankfully got to the side of the road. This was an enormously dangerous situation as the car became fully disabled and we were subject to limited options of relief from a major traffic area. Within 30 minutes of being disabled, no electrical charge was present in the car, including emergency flashers, making the situation more dangerous as it was nighttime, so we had to abandon the car and walk down the expressway to find a hotel. Could not even put the car in neutral for the tow. Service is initially reporting a failure of the restart generator. This appears to be an alarmingly common issue with Audis.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-12-29
  • VIN: WAUL2AF27MN
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Multiple warnings indicating to contact dealer (Lane departure, adaptive cruise control, collision avoidance, electrical system, start/stop, etc) then 1 minute later transmission failure and engine failure imminent. After a minute or two my center MMI went blank then my electronic dash went blank, transmission went into neutral and the engine died all within a few seconds. Fortunately I was able to coast to a stop in the center median of an expressway and contacted the dealer. Flatbed towed to dealer who stated most likely the generator between the lithium battery bank and gas engine failed. They have seen several in this year for A6 and A7's with mild hybrid engines. I was lucky to be in low volume traffic as there was no power to indicate to drivers around me that my engine quit and not even turn signals worked. After having car towed to Audi dealer, they proceeded to tell me it was the starter/generator and the part was on back order for two to three months.
2022-09-22

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-09-20
  • VIN: WAUE3AF27MN
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: Sunroof spontaneously shattered while driving. No other cars around when this occurred. Caused a very loud BANG. Was driving on the freeway when this occurred. Dealer would not confirm issue was spontaneous - felt something must have hit the car to cause this. No defined impact location on roof. Also, roof glass was pushed up in the middle instead of down like would be expected if something hit it from the outside. No warning before it occurred.

Negative 2021 Audi A6 car reviews

  1. Morgan Pagac 2024-11-26

My 2020 A6 V6 with 600 miles occasionally makes a loud clunking noise when coming to a stop. Despite what the dealer says about it being normal, I believe that this should not be happening on a car of this caliber. It is a distracting issue that needs to be addressed.

  2. Nathan Gerlach 2024-09-24

I purchased this car used with 28k miles. Unfortunately, after 7 months, the alternator failed and caused all systems to shut down, leaving me stranded with little warning. It turns out that this is a major known issue. Then, at 11 months into my ownership, I heard a ticking noise that got louder. I brought the car in and at 39k miles, the engine failed and needed replacement. Overall, I found this car to be unreliable and decided to get rid of it. Now, I am using our second car, a Toyota, which has 187k miles and has never failed me! I made sure to properly service the Audi, so it's unfortunate that it didn't work out.

  3. Dean Wolff 2024-08-05

The car has some great features, such as being very quiet and having comfortable front seats, which is what you would expect from a luxury car. The ride is smooth and relaxing, making it a pleasure to drive. The styling is also very classy. However, the move to dual touchscreens and the relocation of controls like heated seats and temperature controls to the screens is a bit of a miss for Audi. The interior is a step backwards compared to my A5 or previous Audis, as the dual touchscreen is inferior to the button and dial controls Audi used to use in both feel and function. The touchscreens get unsightly quickly with all the finger prints and the feeling of the haptic feedback on the touchscreens pales in comparison to the satisfying clicks of actual buttons and knobs. You also have to take your eyes off the road to do simple things like adjust temperature or put on a heated seat that you easily could do by feel with a temperature knob or hard button. The car also uses too much gloss black and shiny silver trim in high touch places, which makes it look dirty easily. However, the wood trim is really nice as is the stitching, though there is a surprising amount of hard plastic, for instance on the seatback. The trunk space is fine, it isn’t that tall of a trunk but is deep and well-shaped. Cubic foot wise it is smaller than some competitors but real world it is fine. The 360 parking cameras are really helpful and the Audi virtual cockpit is really good. The leg room is good in the outboard positions but the hump is big and the middle seat isn’t great because of that. You really wouldn’t want to try to cram three adults back there because of that. Something like a Lexus ES (or even an Accord!) has a more usable back seat for three. The powertrain is a mixed bag. Turbo lag isn’t too bad (though noticeable sometimes) and the midrange torque is good. The transmission is top notch. In cruising the engine is quiet but rev it and the four sounds like it could be out of a Corolla or Jetta. The 2022 Acura MDX that we own has a much nicer and smoother sounding 6 cylinder engine, which is comparable in price to the A6. While the A6 has solid handling, it doesn't really encourage you to tear around corners. In comparison, our 2018 A5 or the MDX feels more fun and eager, and encourages more throwing them into corners. However, the A6 is a great car for cruising. Perhaps upgrading to the 6 cylinder engine would change the feel of the car.

  4. Hunter D'Amore 2024-07-11

The interior and exterior appearance of this vehicle are excellent. However, the ride quality is not up to par. It seems that Audi assumes that only Formula One drivers would drive this former luxury car. The suspension is quite firm, which means that once you leave the glassy smooth test ride route, you will feel every road imperfection. Additionally, the transmission is jerky, especially at low speeds, and the turbo lag is the worst I have ever experienced in any car. Although the car can go from 0-60 very quickly, the first second or two with your foot on the gas will be ignored. This car is nothing like the amazing 2013 Audi A6 I traded in. If you were hoping for a refined ride, you may want to consider test driving this vehicle off of routes carefully selected by the dealer.

  5. Immanuel Hegmann 2024-06-01

I purchased my car 5 months ago and unfortunately, I have had to take it to the shop 3 times. Twice for a known infotainment problem, which keeps deleting my favorite destinations, including my home. Currently, it is in the shop after it stopped running and had to be towed about 2 weeks ago. However, I am confident that the fuel level sensor they are waiting for will fix the problem. Although I have heard that my dealer may have a couple of other cars with the same issue, I am sure that this car will be reliable in the future.

Positive 2021 Audi A6 car reviews

  1. Emile Carter 2024-11-20

I drove this car for 180 miles while my A4 was being serviced. The car has some great features such as outstanding power, great grip, smooth engine, and a very quiet interior. The sound system is also top-notch. However, there are some downsides to the car. Even in comfort mode, the ride can be a bit bumpy due to the 20-inch tires. The steering also lacks feedback and feels numb, which can be disappointing for those who enjoy a more engaging driving experience. Additionally, the car's dual-screen interface is not very intuitive and can be difficult to use while driving. The touch screens can also be dangerous and distracting, especially when driving with an open sunroof. Overall, the car is a technical marvel that may appeal to tech enthusiasts, but for those who prefer a more traditional driving experience, the Mercedes E450 may be a better option. The E450 is more comfortable and handles remarkably well, while still resembling a regular car.

  2. Arthur Schaefer 2024-11-16

This vehicle is really quiet, comfortable and fast with the 3.0T. My Prestige was the nicest car I’ve ever owned. The MMI is awesome, and the driver's assistance is great. The interior is beautiful, and the steering and transmission are excellent. Before the A6, I had a Lexus GS350, so I missed the edgy sportiness of the Lexus with the A6. This is the only reason the A6 was not 5 stars for me.

  3. Cary Fahey 2024-11-07

I'm glad to hear that you love the car!

  4. Jaime VonRueden 2024-10-27

    This is a great automobile!

  5. Julio Weber 2024-10-26

You'll have all the instrumentation you need and more!
