Ford Fiesta problems

The Ford Fiesta is a supermini car that was marketed by Ford from 1976 to 2023 over seven generations. Over the years, the Fiesta has mainly been developed and manufactured by Ford's European operations, and had been positioned below the Escort (later the Focus).
Ford had sold over 15 million Fiestas from 1976 to July 2011, making it one of the best-selling Ford nameplates behind the Escort and the F-Series. It has been manufactured in the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela, Mexico, Taiwan, China, India, Thailand, and South Africa.
The Fiesta was discontinued in 2023, after over 22 million units had been made. The final Ford Fiesta rolled off the production line on 7 July 2023.

Common Ford Fiesta problems
The Ford Fiesta, a popular car model known for its fun-to-drive nature and compact size, has faced several common problems over the years. Here are some of the issues reported by owners, based on the search results:
- Rear axle problem (2002-2008 cars): There have been issues reported with the rear axles of some cars built between 2002 and 2008. The weld seam that secures the brake unit mounting plate to the rear axle might not be to specification, potentially leading to brake failure.
- Fuel pipe problem (2004-2005 cars): Some Fiestas built between 2004 and 2005 had problems with their fuel pipes. Some cars had pipes that weren't made to specification and could degrade, leading to seepage of fuel and a possible fire.
- Steering column problem (2006 cars): Some cars built between August and September 2006 have problems with their steering columns. It appears that the columns might not have been handled properly before fitment and could have been damaged as a result. In some cases, this could lead to a loss of steering control.
- Power steering problem (2007 cars): Belts that drive the power steering pump could de-laminate and fail, leading to the loss of power-assisted steering in some cars built between September and November 2007.
- Water pump problem (2008-present cars): Some fifth-generation Fiestas had issues with their water pumps. Listen for grumbles and groans from the engine while it idles. It's an 85 bill, so be on the lookout. Check for damp patches in all cars of this generation.
- Faulty pollen filters (2008-present cars): Faulty pollen filters can allow water to enter the cabin and cause dampness. It's a 50 bill for new filters.
- Faulty exhausts (2011-present cars): In rare cases, the blanking plug on the exhaust might not maintain the correct tightness, leaving an open hole in the system. The hot gases can melt the engine cooling fan moulding and cause fire and fumes in the cabin.
- Suspension problem (2008-present cars): Some cars built during September 2011 had faulty rear suspension. Their rear axle mounting bolts did not meet the required specification and it's possible the bolt could break.
- Steering column problem (2019 cars): Some Fiestas built from 15 May 2019 to 17 June 2019 were fitted with steering columns that weren't up to specification, so speak to your Ford dealer to find out if yours is affected. If it is, the whole column will need to be replaced to prevent potential future issues.
- Rear seatbelt latches problem (2019 cars): The bolts on the rear seatbelt retractors on a small number of examples made between 18 - 25 September 2019 might not have been tightened down correctly at the factory. Speak to your local dealer to find out if your car is affected by this; it'll need to be inspected by a technician if so.
- Brake servo failure (2017 cars): This recall applies to Fiestas that were manufactured between 5 December 2017 and 20 December 2017, on which you may notice that more brake pedal effort is required to slow the car down. Contact your Ford dealer for further information because a technician will need to check the manufacture date on the servo itself to identify if your car is affected. They will then be able to arrange to have the servo replaced if it is found to be one of those affected.
- Faulty clutch (2009-2017 cars): The average price of a Ford Fiesta clutch repair when booked through WhoCanFixMyCar is £576.70; the average cost of a replacement is £588.37, which shows that booking a repair isn’t necessarily the cheapest option.
- Turbo failure (various cars): Turbo failure can be caused by excessive carbon build-up in the engine or an overboost problem, which makes the bearings overheat and various components become worn or loose. Turbo cleaning may solve the problem if the failure is caused by carbon deposits. Otherwise, you’ll need to book a turbo repair or replacement, which is likely expensive.
- Bad fuel injectors (various cars): Cleaning your fuel injectors will likely solve the problem. Knowing how to locate, remove and clean them correctly isn’t straightforward, so unless you’ve got decent mechanical know-how, we’d recommend contacting a mechanic to do it for you.
- Water leaks (various cars): Water leaks are usually caused by faulty door and window seals. It’s reasonably easy to fix this problem yourself using weatherproof sealing strips. You can get these for between £5-10.
These issues highlight the need for regular maintenance and inspections to ensure the safety and longevity of the Ford Fiesta.
What is the common fault on the Ford Fiesta?
There have been reports of coolant leaks, which could be caused by issues with hoses, radiators, or water pumps. Faulty Door Latches: Door latch issues, leading to difficulty in closing or securing doors, have been reported in some Ford Fiesta models.

Ford Fiesta 2019
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-04
- Date Complaint: 2024-09-05
- VIN: 3FADP4GX2KM
- Components: POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: My clutch slave cylinder failed with approximately 64000 mi on the vehicle. This is a hydraulic system sharing the same reservoir as the brakes. The clutch pedal stuck to the floor leaving me unable to change gear while driving on the highway. Had to pull off on the side of the road and manually pull up the clutch with my hand. After that it functioned seemingly fine. I took the car to a local garage who diagnosed the issue and said it was fairly common on these cars. Part has not been replaced yet so it cannot be inspected but it is scheduled to go in to have the transmission dropped and slave cylinder replaced. There were no lamps messages or other warning signs prior to the incident on the highway aside from a slight softening of the clutch feel which occured during the months proceeding the failure. The clutch in this vehicle is notoriously soft to begin with so it did not feel much different. Thank you
Ford Fiesta 2014
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-14
- Date Complaint: 2024-08-31
- VIN: 3FADP4BJ3EM
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I started to notice a bit of resistance when pressing on the brakes. Minor initially, but then if you had to apply slightly more pressure the car would jerk/pull hard to the right. The harder and faster you had to press, the more intense the jerk. I took her in to the dealership and they noticed something with the reservoir into the hydraulics unit that feeds fluid into the brakes. The fluids are not circulating back into it and the caliper is not building enough pressure to close. They said it's the ABS Hydraulic Control Unit: D2BZ-2C405-E and the part is on national backorder with no ETA. The car is unsafe to drive without the part. She's a 2014 with only 28k miles and it seems strange to have this failure with such low mileage. I just have texts with the dealership right now. I spoke with Ford directly today and they guesstimated 5-6 months for the part. I ordered a used part and will take her to another mechanic to get it replaced in the interim since the dealership won't work with a used part. At that point I will have invoices. Thanks.

What a lovely little go cart! It was so much fun to drive and I never had a single issue with it, especially with the 5-speed manual transmission. It always put a smile on my face, especially on back roads. Compared to other cars at this price point, it had a wonderful interior and a very nice, smooth ride. Unfortunately, someone hit me head on while going 35-40 miles per hour, but thanks to all the air bags that deployed, I was left completely unharmed other than a couple of tense muscles. It did such a great job protecting me when I needed it most that I decided to buy another brand new one! Overall, I am absolutely thrilled with this car!

Vehicle year: 2015
I've had my Fiesta for about a year now and I absolutely love the MPG that I get. I average about 35 combined, mostly highway driving with some city driving. The highest I ever got was 42 MPG on the highway, and 30 MPG in the city. On a good week, I can get up to 36 or 37 MPG combined. The car may seem small, but it feels big behind the wheel. I run full synthetic oil rather than the blend that Ford was using, and it runs much better on synthetic. I also use a K&N Oil Filter, which seems to be working just fine with no problems. I added a K&N Air Filter, which gave the car a little more power. The transmission is really great, and I only had to replace the Transmission Control Module around 6,000 miles, but the warranty covered it in full. Other than that, I haven't had any problems. I'm 6'2, so there is no room in the back seat for passengers, but I am the only one that uses it, so that's fine. The car has great visibility in all directions, and I love the blind spot mirrors. They are great on crowded roads, and if set right, you don't need to look over your shoulder. The steering wheel controls are placed nicely, as well as the radio controls. I love the Bluetooth feature. The only thing I wish was different is that the 12-volt outlet had more consistent power after turning the car completely off. The trunk space is great, with enough space for medium-sized objects. Overall, it is a great car, and I would recommend it for teen drivers because it is small, easy on gas, and has Bluetooth for hands-free communication.

Vehicle year: 2015
I only drive fun cars. I used to drive an '06 Audi S4, my wife drives a BMW 335i with the sports package, and after reading so many glowing reviews of the Fiesta ST, I decided to give one a spin. I was pleasantly surprised and easily decided to replace my Subaru WRX STi with it. The Fiesta ST is not only better than all those cars but also far cheaper. It's amazing how you can replace something more expensive with something less expensive and still end up with a better product. The Fiesta ST actually lives up to its hype - it's that good. If you enjoy driving and love fun-to-drive cars, there's no other car that can provide more fun - no matter the price.

Vehicle year: 2016
The Ford Fiesta ST, despite its ridiculous name, is one of the best-designed vehicles for the dollar that I have ever driven. The car's designers went in on Day 1 and said, 'OK, how much do we have? Alright! Let's put it all in the handling, transmission, and engine, and whatever's left we will add into the interior.' Although the ST has some flaws, such as the shittiest door handles you'll ever see, missing dead pedal, and cup holders that are too close to the handbrake, it still deserves 5 stars. The controls are all fully purposed and perfectly designed, and the nav is amazing! I would even say it is better than Google maps in some respects. The handling is both fully responsive and light, and the car just pulls forever with that clean running turbo. The transmission pulls you towards the next gear but doesn't fight you when you try and force it down one. All this handling, power, and responsiveness, and still has a really good Sony Stereo. The optional Recaro seats are a complete must as they hug and comfort you every turn you take. If you're looking for a fun commuter that doesn't compromise on sports car fun, I highly recommend the ST.

The Fiesta is a great car for both city driving and road trips. As someone who lives in the desert Southwest, having a car with a strong A/C is crucial, and the Fiesta did not disappoint. In fact, it had the coldest A/C out of all the cars I test drove. The ride is also noticeably quieter and more comfortable compared to similar models from other companies. While the back seat may be a bit cramped for adults, the car has plenty of space and storage to meet my needs. This is actually my second Fiesta, and I must say that the 2018 model is a significant improvement over my 2012 in terms of both mechanical performance and interior design/features.

I bought a 2011 Ford Fiesta in August 2010 with an automatic transmission. Unfortunately, I experienced some transmission issues within the first month of purchase. Despite taking it to the Ford Shop at least 10 times, the problems persisted. The Ford Engineer suggested that it might be due to my driving style, but I am confident that I was not braking with my left foot while my foot was still on the gas. After going through the New Car Lemon Law process and being denied, I decided to voluntarily repossess the car as I did not want to sell it to someone else. When I offered to have the dealer resell it, I was laughed at for being upside down when asked to trade it in.

I am confident in my assessment that this car is excellent in all aspects except for the transmission gear whine in 5th gear (manual transmission), which is not suitable for highway travel. The dealer has offered to rebuild the transmission, but I believe that the potential drawbacks outweigh the benefits. As a long-awaited new Ford owner, I am disappointed by this issue. However, I plan to continue driving the car for a year before trading it in.

We purchased a Ford Fiesta 2014 in March. Unfortunately, we experienced some issues with the sound system. Despite visiting the Ford dealership twice to complain about loud popping from the radio, they were unable to find anything wrong with it. However, the problem persisted and eventually the radio stopped working altogether, emitting high-pitched and scratchy noises. We consulted a car mechanic who informed us that this is a common issue with this model and that it is caused by a faulty chip, which would cost $500 to fix. Additionally, we would like to note that there are no physical locks on the doors, which could potentially be a safety hazard. We have only had this car for 10 months and it has been more problematic than we anticipated.

From the very beginning, we noticed some problems with this car. The brakes were squeaking due to film on rotors, and we had major transmission problems that the dealership kept telling us were 'normal'. The hill assist would not work, and we also experienced electrical failure. These are just a few of the issues we have had over the last 2 years. After all of the craziness with this car, we finally wrapped up our lemon law case. It was a yearlong process, but we are glad we did it. Ford is buying back our Fiesta, and I now have a wonderful and reliable Subaru. If any of you are thinking about going the lemon law route, I highly encourage you. You should not have to be stuck with a car that is dangerous.

My girlfriend owns this vehicle and unfortunately, it has been plagued with problems at just 35,000 miles. There are issues with the weather stripping coming off the windshield, door jams, window seals, and interior panels falling apart on both the driver and passenger side. Additionally, there are faulty window switches, a faulty transmission that Ford will not replace (there is currently a class action lawsuit against them for this), and the rear hatch compartment cover broke off. These are all common problems which is very disappointing. Despite being driven by a careful young woman, the car is falling apart due to the poor quality of Ford. As an educated consumer, I would advise doing thorough research before purchasing this car. Originally, the vehicle was gifted while in college, but we are now looking forward to selling it because of the issues we have experienced.
