1990 Ford F150 problems
The Ford F-Series is a series of light-duty trucks marketed and manufactured by Ford Motor Company since the 1948 model year. The F-Series is marketed as a range of full-sized pickup trucks positioned above the midsize Ranger but below the larger Super Duty in the Ford truck lineup. Alongside the F-150 (introduced in 1975), the F-Series also includes the Super Duty series (introduced in 1999), which includes the heavier-duty F-250 through F-450 pickups, F-450/F-550 chassis cabs, and F-600/F-650/F-750 Class 6–8 commercial trucks.
History
The F-Series was first introduced in 1948 as a replacement for a previous pickup model line based on car platforms.
The most popular version of the model line is the F-150 pickup truck, currently in its fourteenth generation (introduced for the 2021 model year). From 1953 to 1983, the entry-level F-Series pickup was the 1⁄2 ton F-100. Starting in 1984, the F-150 became the entry-level. The F-150 has a long-running high-performance off-road trim level introduced for 2010, the (SVT) Raptor currently consisting of three generations. Production of the F-150 SVT Raptor ended in 2014 and it was planned to be succeeded by a new F-150 Raptor, which is based on the thirteenth and fourteenth generation F-150.
The F-Series trucks have been developed into a wide range of design configurations. Alongside medium-duty trucks and "Big Job" conventional trucks (the forerunners of the Ford L-series), the model line has been marketed as a chassis-cab truck and a panel van (a predecessor of the Ford E-Series). The F-Series has served as the platform for various full-sized Ford SUVs, including the Ford Bronco, Ford Expedition/Lincoln Navigator, and Ford Excursion. The F-Series has been marketed by its three North American brands: by Mercury as the M-Series (in Canada from 1948 to 1968), and by Lincoln in the 2000s, as the Blackwood and the later Mark LT (2010s for the latter in Mexico only).
Since 1977, the F-Series has remained the best-selling pickup truck line in the United States; it has been the best-selling vehicle overall since 1981. The F-Series has been the best-selling truck in Canada for over fifty years. As of the 2018 model year, the F-Series generated $41 billion (~$49 billion in 2023) in annual revenue for Ford. By January 2022, the F-Series models have sold over 40 million units. Currently, Ford manufactures the F-Series in four facilities in the United States.

Common 1990 Ford F150 problems
The 1990 Ford F-150 is a popular pickup truck, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues with the 1990 Ford F-150:
- Automatic Transmission: If the TR/MLP sensor is faulty, the transmission may fall out of alignment, causing the engine to flare as you shift the truck into fourth gear. Drivers have reported this problem most commonly in 1994-1995 model F-150s. On 1990-1993 models, flare-up issues with the transmission have also been reported, often when drivers shift the truck between the second and third gears. Ford has attributed this issue to distorted valve plates.
- Ball Joints: On 1990-1996 Ford F-150s, the ball joints have been particularly vulnerable to water exposure. If exposed, the ball joints are liable to expire prematurely, requiring replacement.
- Hard Starting: Drivers have reported complaints of hard-starting on 1990-1996 model F-150s. Ford has attributed this issue to faulty harness wiring in the power control module, which can cause symptoms such as vehicular stalling, hesitation, and failure to start. On 1995 and 1996 Ford trucks, hard-starting has also been linked to a stuck idle air control valve.
- Suspension Problems: Owners of 1991 to 1994 Ford trucks have reported problems with the front suspension system due to weak leaf springs along the front of the vehicle. To fix the issue, newer, stronger leaf springs are recommended.
- Engine Problems: Some 1990 F150 owners have reported issues with the 5.0 engine, such as idling high and stuttering under load at low RPMs. These problems could be due to vacuum leaks, faulty throttle position sensors, or other engine components.
- Ignition Control Module: The ignition control module on the distributor has been known to fail, causing the engine to die while driving and making it difficult to start. Replacing the module can often solve this problem.
These are just a few of the most common problems reported by owners of the 1990 Ford F-150. If you're experiencing any of these issues, it's important to consult with a qualified mechanic to diagnose and repair the problem.

Other than the gas mileage being low at 6-8 mpg, this truck is great! The 4wd is phenomenal and it really makes a difference in the winter. As it's an older vehicle, it will need maintenance and more, but it's perfect for what I need.
-
I actually have wrecked this truck and totaled it. A S-10 going 60mph T-boned me, but I was left unharmed. Thank you for producing this truck, Ford!
-
I drive my Ford to and from work every day, covering a distance of 13 miles. Occasionally, I drive during the day. I have to fill up every four days, which I do when the fuel gauge reaches 1/4. However, I absolutely love the fun of the ride. The acceleration is great and I enjoy it when I drive and people think they can beat that guy in the old Ford. I got the 5.0 and E4OD, which makes it great at the line and good at puddle hopping. There is a three-foot puddle I hit every week and this truck can go down, up, and through the puddle.
-
Overall, it's an excellent truck, but unfortunately, the rear quarter panels are prone to rusting. Perhaps better materials would have made a difference. The only mechanical issues are a sticking starter and a need to replace the idle sensor.
-
What an amazing truck! I bought it after it had sat for almost 3 years and had 133K miles. After dropping in a new battery, she fired right up like she had never sat a day! The truck is built like a tank but drives, rides, and looks fantastic! The interior is very comfortable and made well. The 4.9 v6 is a great engine that can compete with any v8 truck you throw its way. It's fairly fast and has a ton of torque on tap. The truck has low road noise and hugs the road very well. This is the best truck I've ever had the pleasure of owning! *update* It has been 6 months since I bought the truck. It has had its good days and bad days. Unfortunately, I have paid for 3 tow bills and nearly $1,000 in parts. Despite this, I still love this old truck, but it's not suitable for daily use.

It's great to hear about your truck and how well it has served you over the years! After moving to Georgia from Florida in 1993, I needed to purchase a vehicle and ended up buying a truck with 30,000 miles on it. Since then, I've put 110,000 miles on it and have had to do some maintenance work, such as replacing the power window gears, the alternator earlier this year, and the front brakes three times and the rear brakes once. However, I've never had to do any major mechanical work on the engine or transmission. Before I bought it, the truck was used as a tow vehicle and I've also used it to tow a car hauler. Overall, it's been a reliable and trustworthy truck for almost 10 years now!
