The Ford Super Duty (also known as the Ford F-Series Super Duty) is a series of heavy-duty pickup trucks produced by the Ford Motor Company since the 1999 model year. Slotted above the consumer-oriented Ford F-150, the Super Duty trucks are an expansion of the Ford F-Series range, from F-250 to the F-600. The F-250 through F-450 are offered as pickup trucks, while the F-350 through F-600 are offered as chassis cabs.

Rather than adapting the lighter-duty F-150 truck for heavier use, Super Duty trucks have been designed as a dedicated variant of the Ford F-Series. The heavier-duty chassis components allow for heavier payloads and towing capabilities. With a GVWR over 8,500 lb (3,900 kg), Super Duty pickups are Class 2 and 3 trucks, while chassis-cab trucks are offered in Classes 3, 4, 5, and 6. The model line also offers Ford Power Stroke V8 diesel engines as an option.

Ford also offers a medium-duty version of the F-Series (F-650 and F-750), which is sometimes branded as the Super Duty, but is another chassis variant. The Super Duty pickup truck also served as the basis for the Ford Excursion full-sized SUV.

The Super Duty trucks and chassis-cabs are assembled at the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky, and at Ohio Assembly in Avon Lake, Ohio. Prior to 2016, medium-duty trucks were assembled in Mexico under the Blue Diamond Truck joint venture with Navistar International.

Common 1979 Ford F-250 problems

The 1979 Ford F-250 has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to the engine, transmission, and electrical system.

One of the most common issues with the 1979 Ford F-250 is related to the engine. The engine is prone to oil leaks, misfires, and poor fuel efficiency. To avoid these issues, it is important to stay up to date on routine maintenance, such as oil changes and tune-ups.

Another common problem with the 1979 Ford F-250 is related to the transmission. Transmission problems can manifest as difficulty shifting gears, slipping gears, or even complete failure. Regular maintenance, including fluid changes and inspections, can help prevent transmission issues.

The electrical system is also a common area of concern for 1979 Ford F-250 owners. Batteries and alternators can fail over time, causing issues such as dead batteries and electrical system malfunctions. Proper maintenance and regular inspections can help prevent these issues from occurring.

In addition to these common issues, there have been reports of specific problems with the 1979 Ford F-250. For example, some owners have reported issues with the brakes, which can fail or become less responsive over time. This issue is often caused by exposure to road salt and other environmental factors, which can cause brake lines and other components to deteriorate over time.

Another specific problem with the 1979 Ford F-250 is related to the steering system. Some owners have reported that the steering system can cause the truck to veer to one side or the other when driving at high speeds. This issue is often caused by worn or damaged steering components, such as tie rods or ball joints.

Overall, the 1979 Ford F-250 is a reliable and capable heavy-duty pickup truck, but like any vehicle, it is not immune to problems and issues that can arise over time. By staying up to date on routine maintenance and addressing issues as they arise, 1979 Ford F-250 owners can keep their trucks running smoothly for years to come.
