2005 Dodge Ram 1500 problems
The Ram pickup (marketed as the Dodge Ram until 2010) is a full-size pickup truck manufactured by Stellantis North America (formerly Chrysler Group LLC and FCA US LLC) and marketed from 2010 onwards under the Ram Trucks brand. The current fifth-generation Ram debuted at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan, in January of that year.
Previously, Ram was part of the Dodge line of light trucks. The name Ram was first used in 1981 model year Dodge Trucks in October 1980, following the retiring and rebadging of the Dodge D series pickup trucks as well as B-series vans, though the company had used a ram's-head hood ornament on some trucks as early as 1933.
Ram trucks have been named Motor Trend magazine's Truck of the Year eight times; the second-generation Ram won the award in 1994, the third-generation Ram heavy-duty won the award in 2003, the fourth-generation Ram Heavy Duty won in 2010 and the fourth-generation Ram 1500 won in 2013 and 2014, and the current fifth-generation Ram pickup became the first truck in history to win the award three times, winning in 2019, 2020, and 2021.

Common 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 problems
The Dodge Ram 1500, produced in 2005, has its own set of problems that may affect its performance and safety. Some of the most common issues include stalling engines, separated drive shafts, and warped brake rotors.
Stalling engines are the most common complaint, occurring around 75,000 miles. The sources of these stalling issues include EGR valves, throttle bodies, and cylinder head failures. EGR valves can cost up to $380 to replace, throttle bodies can cost around $700, and cylinder head failures can exceed $2,000. These problems can lead to inconvenient and potentially dangerous situations, especially if they occur while driving.
Drive shaft failures are another common problem, affecting many models around 90,000 miles. The drive shaft can separate from the differential, requiring replacement of the entire assembly, which costs over $2,600. A recall related to this issue does not always cover the problem, leaving owners responsible for the repair costs.
Warped brake rotors are a third issue, occurring every 20,000 miles. The rotors tend to get damaged easier than other cars, and a new set is around $400. This problem can affect the truck's braking performance and safety, especially during high-speed driving or in emergency situations.
In addition to these issues, the 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 has received 12 recalls, with the most serious being for the rear axle pinion nut, which can cause the driveshaft to detach, increasing the risk of an accident. Many of the other recalls are for air bags and lighting issues.
While the Dodge Ram 1500 can last around 250,000 miles with proper maintenance, these common problems can lead to expensive repairs and decreased safety. It is essential to address these issues promptly to ensure the truck's longevity and reliability.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-29
- VIN: 1D7HU18N55J
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Rear differential locked up while driving at approximately 30 mph, causing the vehicle to come to a stop and unable to move. Luckily the failure happened on a road with little traffic so no accident occurred and other drivers were not put at risk. There were no warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms prior to failure. Inspection revealed broken gears and pins in the rear differential. There was a recall (P77) for this model year truck for what appears to be the same problem. The recall repair work was performed in 2019 and the truck has been driven approximately 20,000 miles since the repair. The FCA recall line told me to have the truck towed to a dealer to get a diagnosis and repair estimate, but after the tow was complete the recall line said since more than 2 years had passed since the recall repair work, the repair warranty had expired and nothing would be covered, regardless of diagnosis. The broken parts are still available for review if needed.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-18
- VIN: 1D7HU18DX5S
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Vehicle brought in for recall repairs on March 18, 2024. Recalls R25 and N43 were completed. Recall P77 failed inspection. Dealer parts not available. Was asked by service advisor if ok to use aftermarket parts. I agreed. Service advisor needed approval from district rep before continuing. I was then told by service advisor that vehicle was safe to drive as long as I drove it easy. His comment, “Its lasted this long, you will be ok. Just dont pull any trailers.” Was asked to wait a week for district rep to return from vacation. I took the truck home and did not drive it after reading the P77 recall info. The truck is not safe to drive with a loose rear axle pinion nut. I returned the truck on 4/8/2024 for repairs to be completed. The dealer will not communicate with me unless I initiate communication. There is no information on parts being ordered or work being scheduled. It is now 4/29/2024 and no action from the dealer. I have asked to speak with the Service Manager and no reply.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-29
- VIN: 1D7HU18D85S
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: Significantly rusted out truck bed framing. I purchased the truck from a private seller a couple of years ago, and the bed had a rubber mat and plastic side panels in the bed. I was unaware of what was underneath at that time. On 06/28/2023, I removed the rubber mat, and side plastic panels to reveal major rusting with the truck bed. The bed is at major risk of separating from the frame. If this issue is not resolved, the truck bed will experience separation from the truck frame; causing the bed to separate at highway speeds, causing property damage, injuries, or even death. Upon searching for a good used bed from salvage yards, none exist that are in good condition in a 500 mile search radius and/or they are $800.00 to multiple thousands in cost to obtain. Multiple beds on the search have major rusting/wasting of the bed frame as well. This should constitute a major safety defect with poor rust proofing.

The contact stated that the fuel tank straps were severely rusted. The contact stated that the fuel tank was filled with gasoline during the failure. The vehicle was towed to the local mechanic. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer and local dealer were not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 158,000.

AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-02-20
- VIN: 1D7HA18D25J
- Components: AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: On Feb. 20, 2023 my 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 was worked to have a repair for the AirBag Recall. I spoke with someone at JT's Dodge to set up the appointment PRIOR to 2-20-23 and was NEVER verbally informed that there was a posed risk of my dash being cracked and so I set up the appointment. I tried to update my information BUT the young lady on the other end REFUSED to update it stating I've been there before in the past. MY TWO listed phone numbers are correct (over 10 years) and my address reflected was not updated to my new home address. On the day of Feb. 20, 2023 I sent my son-in-law to take my truck to have the recalled air bag repaired, which he did. He reports being told in a non urgent, very vague manner that there's a possibility of the dash cracking and per the Service Manager "it doesn't happen very often but we have to tell you". My son-in-law signed the paperwork to have the airbag repaired. I was gravely ill and unable to take it myself or I would have. He signed the form; the service manager took photos showing there was NOT any cracks prior to the work being done and other photos showing a crack after the work had been done. I WAS NEVER CONTACTED at either working phone number listed on file. When I finally reached someone several days later they showed no concern. I now have an 8.5 inch crack in my dash putting myself and passengers at SAFTY RISK. POTENTIAL RISKS: My airbag is NOT properly pressurized, a delay with or the airbag not deploying at all if involved in a MVC/MVA, possibility of the airbag deploying WITHOUT being involved in a MVC/MVA and over time the crack could become larger/longer allowing dirt particles to get into the crack causing electrical problems or a malfunctioning airbag sensor. WHICH places myself and passengers in great danger at any moment. Apparently this is a known (uncared about) issue as reported by Dodge who has DISCONTINUED the dash saying it is "OBSOLETE", refusing to offer repairs or replacement, resolution.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-03-27
- VIN: 3D7HA18H95G
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
- Summary: This aftermarket throttle body was on the truck when I purchased it 4 months ago. I live in Georgia and bought the car in Florida. In driving it home 400 miles, I noticed in stop and go traffic, the throttle was sticking. It would stick between 1500-2500 RPM with the clutch engaged (vehicle not in gear). I also noticed when I let off the throttle, I would continue my speed or even accelerate versus slowing down. I contacted BBK and they told me to ship it to them to be repaired, but that means I would be without my vehicle for weeks. Then I ask about this in a Facebook group and it appears this is a common, known issue. Even people who have bought a "reconditioned" throttle body from BBK have this same issue. I notice no where have you asked for the manufacturer's info so here it is: BBK PERFORMANCE 3060 Performance Circle, DeLand, FL 32724 Also here is the product on their website: https://www.bbkperformance.com/dodge-srt-10-throttle-body-04-06.html
