Ford Explorer sport trac problems

ford logo

The Ford Explorer Sport Trac (also shortened to Ford Sport Trac) is a pickup truck that was manufactured and marketed by Ford Motor Company for the North American market. The first mid-sized pickup truck produced by Ford, the Sport Trac was marketed from the 2001 to the 2010 model years (skipping the 2006 model year). Sized between the Ranger (whose crew cab variants were sold outside of North America) and the F-150, the Sport Trac largely competed against crew-cab variants of the midsize Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon, Dodge Dakota, Nissan Frontier, and Toyota Tacoma.

Produced over two generations, the Ford Explorer Sport Trac shared its chassis and much of its body from the Ford Explorer SUV (with the pickup truck bed designed specifically for the model line). All production was sourced from the Louisville Assembly Plant in Louisville, Kentucky (taking the place of the Ford Ranger).

As Ford developed the fifth-generation Ford Explorer as a unibody crossover for the 2011 model year, the Sport Trac was phased out of the model line, with production ending in October 2010. Closely matching the Sport Trac in size, the fourth-generation Ford Ranger serves the same market function in its SuperCrew four-door crew cab configuration.

Common Ford Explorer sport trac problems

The Ford Explorer Sport Trac is a popular pickup truck that has been on the market for many years. However, like any vehicle, it has its fair share of common problems that have been reported by owners.

One of the most common issues with the Ford Explorer Sport Trac is engine troubles. These problems were most prevalent in the 2001, 2005, and 2007 models. Specific engine problems include broken timing chain adjusters, a constant check engine light on, and chirping/rubber belt noise. These issues can be dangerous and costly to repair, so it is best to avoid these models if you want a reliable used car.

Another common problem with the Ford Explorer Sport Trac is transmission failure. This issue was most commonly reported in the 2002 and 2007 models. Transmission failure can be a significant inconvenience and can lead to expensive bills. Some of the symptoms of transmission failure include difficult shifting, transmission failure, and slipping transmission. If you want to avoid transmission issues, it is best to steer clear of the 2002 and 2007 models.

Electrical troubles are also a common problem with the Ford Explorer Sport Trac. These issues were most prevalent in the 2004 model. Some of the most common electrical troubles include haywire gauges, inaccurate fuel gauges, and a car that dies while driving. While these issues are not as expensive to repair as engine or transmission problems, they can still be an inconvenience.

In addition to these common problems, there are a few other potential issues with the Explorer Sport Trac that are worth knowing about. For example, some owners have reported that the head restraints were moving backward during a crash. This is a safety issue that can be addressed by fully adjusting the head restraint before operating the vehicle and ensuring that it is as high as the driver's head. The 2001 to 2005 models were most riddled with a leaking coolant problem due to the thermostat housing. Drivers reported that the coolant leaked into the ground, giving off a sweet smell. If you are buying a Sport Trac equipped with a 4.0-liter engine, you have to be on your guard as they are also prone to having coolant leaks.

Based on complaints and reports, the worst Ford Explorer Sport Trac years are 2001 and 2007. These models had the most complaints and were rated the least reliable. The 2001 model had 337 complaints, most of which were centered on engine and transmission issues. The 2007 model had 205 complaints and issues with coolant leakage, overheating caused by a radiator leak, a broken heater blend door, wheel bearing failure, rough idling, stalling, and a cracked intake manifold, among others.

In conclusion, if you are considering purchasing a Ford Explorer Sport Trac, it is essential to be aware of these common problems. While the vehicle has many positive attributes, it is crucial to choose a good model year to ensure that you get the most value for your money. Avoiding the 2001 and 2007 models, as well as being aware of potential engine, transmission, and electrical issues, can help you make an informed decision and avoid costly repairs down the line.

  • Summary: My vehicle's engine has on a number of occasions simply quit running. The engine has died while underway, and also when resuming from a stop. It will or has to this point cranked without problems each time this has happened. I've just been fortunate it hasn't quit while I'm in a driving situation that involves another vehicle in the position to crash into me as I'm restarting the engine. There is not a particular situation I can point to where it does this more. The engine has less than 120K miles and maintence is routine. OBD by certified mechanics has not shown any defective readings. I've also check on-line and found it's not just my vehicle, but others in different years are doing the same thing. There's nothing on the Ford website that addresses this issue.

Latest negative Ford Explorer sport trac car reviews

  1. Devin Barrows 2025-06-14

    Vehicle year: 2001

The brakes and rotors require regular maintenance, just like oil changes. Unfortunately, the gas mileage is not very good and the steering and handling could use some improvement. Additionally, we have noticed that the black paint tends to crack after only one year, and the manufacturer does not notify consumers of this defect. A friend of our family who works at a body shop informed us of this issue. If your truck is black, we recommend having it painted before the end of the warranty period.

  2. Jerome Runte 2025-06-09

    Vehicle year: 2002

Hello! I've been driving this vehicle since September, when I moved to a mountain town with high roads that my previous car couldn't handle. I'm happy to say that this truck has been a lifesaver during the winter months, thanks to its four by four capabilities. It handled the snow like a champ! I did have to replace the brakes at 42,000 miles, which seems to be a common issue according to what I've read. Despite some creaks and weird noises that have popped up (which is a bit concerning for a vehicle with only 50,000 miles), I absolutely love the back of the truck. I have the full cover, which keeps my dog safe and happy during our travels. Plus, it's super easy to let him visit - all I have to do is lower the window!

  3. Tyson Dare 2025-06-07

    Vehicle year: 2002

Your SportTrac is cute, but it seems like it's been giving you some trouble. It doesn't handle as well as you'd like, and it's a bit loud and rough-running. You mentioned that it creaks when you turn the wheel too far, which can be frustrating, especially when going through a drive-through restaurant. It's great that you got the extended warranty, as it sounds like the engine light has been coming on quite frequently. Additionally, you mentioned that the driver's seat won't go close enough for your comfort. That can definitely be a pain, but hopefully, you're still able to enjoy your SportTrac despite these issues.

  4. Brain Rosenbaum 2025-05-25

    Vehicle year: 2002

I chose this truck for its functionality - to transport my family and cargo at the same time. I preferred it over the Dakota because it drives like a car - which it is. While it may not be as durable as a traditional truck, it is perfect for suburbanites like me. Although it has had some issues, I am grateful for the warranty. Unfortunately, the dealership has not been very supportive. It is a fantastic alternative to a wagon, but not to a pick-up truck. If treated with care, it will perform well. It has great speed, but poor mileage (18-20 mpg).

  5. Monserrate Haley 2025-05-24

    Vehicle year: 2001

The 3rd Explorer is nothing like the first one (1991). However, it did save me when a 3/4 ton Chevy turned into me at 60mph. While it took a beating, I am grateful for its safety features. Unfortunately, this vehicle did not meet my expectations. It has trouble on wet roads with traction and wind noise around the front windows that makes it difficult to have a conversation with passengers unless you both shout (occurs at 35mph or higher). Additionally, the gas mileage is terrible, with only 11mpg in town and about 14+mpg on the highway. There are also many engine noises under the hood. Overall, the car seems very poorly assembled. In comparison, my '91 was the best followed by '96 Eddie B. and this one is a distant 3rd, very distant!!

    Vehicle year: 2010

It's becoming increasingly difficult to find vehicles with low mileage these days. However, we were fortunate enough to find one with just 24,000 miles on the odometer, located about 200 miles east of us in the Houston area. It was in excellent condition, with the paint, undercarriage, and interior looking like new. Negotiating the price was a bit challenging due to the high demand for this type of vehicle, but after a couple of days, we were able to reach a reasonable agreement. We were thrilled to discover that the Sport Trac comes standard-equipped with a tow package, including a 3.73 rear end, sway control, auxiliary transmission cooler, and class IV hitch rated at 5,250 lbs capacity. In May 2016, we purchased a Winnebago Drop 170S Travel trailer, which weighs just under 3,000 lbs. We installed a weight control hitch and were pleased to find that the truck handles the combined load of just under 4,000 lbs with ease. The towing MPG is around 11.5 with overdrive off. I heard a rumor last week that Ford will reintroduce the Ranger and a new Bronco in 2020. I hope the Ranger is also equipped for light towing. In my opinion, the Sport Trac is one of the best-engineered products that Ford has ever designed. I wish they would reintroduce it instead of the Ranger, but I guess they know what they're doing...

I've purchased three of these vehicles, and they have proven to be very reliable and sturdy. After putting Michelin tires on, they get better mileage and ride tremendously better. The rear seating arrangement is better than all the other 4-door pickup trucks, comfortably accommodating four people and their belongings. The vehicle is always stable and very well-mannered on the road. While it may not be a sports car or hot rod, it gets good mileage. It's always over 20 highway miles per gallon and very capable, even in 2-wheel drive in snow and ice. Additionally, it's a flex fuel vehicle and easy to maintain for the owner. It's the best SUV buy out there!

This vehicle has all the refinements and upgrades of the 2006 Explorer and more. The V-6 is smooth, and the torque-rise is perfectly fitted to the 5-speed automatic transmission. The seats are supportive and provide ample room in the front-row, even for a large-framed person like me. All controls are clearly identifiable and not distracting while driving. Fuel economy is excellent, despite being an SUV with 4X4 capability. With the intelligent 4 wheel drive system, I had no problems on slippery surfaces. With the optional safety system(s), including the side impact and airbag canopy, I feel secure. It's a great vehicle!

I purchased my Island blue Ford truck brand new from the dealer in 2002. It's the 2001 model and has been a reliable vehicle with only minor repairs needed. With 165,000 miles on it, I have definitely gotten my money's worth and plan to keep it for another 100,000 miles. I have taken good care of it with regular maintenance, including using high-quality gas, regular oil changes, and flushing the radiator. I even hand wax it twice a year to keep it looking as good as it runs. My 2002 Ford Ranger is also running strong, and I highly recommend both vehicles. Even after a two-car garage collapsed on my Sport Track, it still took the punishment and looks brand new after repairs. I have been a loyal Ford owner for years and have never had a vehicle give out before reaching 200,000 miles. I plan to keep driving my truck until the engine dies or until electric cars make gas obsolete. Thanks for reading!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my Sport Trac. I've had it since 2002 and it's been such a reliable vehicle for me. Even with 158,000 miles on it, it still runs really well. I've been able to keep it in great shape with some routine maintenance and I'm confident I'll be able to get at least 200,000 miles out of it. I highly recommend checking your manual and keeping up with maintenance if you want your car to last. It's saved me thousands on repairs and I've had similar success with other Fords I've owned. Thanks for listening!
